Round One - Falls Creek
Tin the article with Ben McIlroy. Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.

However, I hope the snow Gods are reading, as I think we’d all like a little top up of the natural stuff to allow the snowmakers a night off… or two. With such sunny days and crisp nights, a word of warning… watch where you step. Black ice is lethal. Yours truly, a decades rich and experienced snow person, did the equivalent of a ‘dub cork 1080’ landing on my ‘too well insulated’ posterior this week. So be careful out there – ‘if its shiny, you’ll slip.’ A pair of boot chains are a worthwhile investment, certainly cheaper than the alternative (and a little less embarrassing too).
Another tip on these delightfully (if somewhat over done) sunny days, is don’t forget to slap on the sunblock, but also don’t be fooled into thinking it’s warm. Make sure you rug up and layer up. The windchill is as deceptive as the black ice… it can be bitingly cold and penetrates the best gear if you don’t layer appropriately. A close fitting, tight, but not suffocatingly so base layer to keep your core warm, followed by another lighter garment,
preferably wool… remember the French call cotton ‘the fabric of death.’ Cotton can absorb up to 27 times it weight in water and transfer heat away from the body 25 times faster than air…’so ditch the cotton (save it for the beach). Add on top of that an insulating layer…’down, synthetic, poly fleece - it doesn’t really matter. Finally, the shell - something that has a rating to keep out water and wind (look for 5k-10k up to 20K on the labelling or make it GoreTex – the latter is much more expensive). If possible, make sure that final layer has ‘venting.’ Pit zips or the like that give you the ability to regulate your body heat when you expend plenty of energy, but it doesn’t completely expose you, so that the core stays warm and your body well regulated. Many ski/boarding pants offer venting on the legs. I find these the most effective way to offload heat… especially when sitting on a chair lift or taking a break. Follow
the above and then no matter what the weather does, you’re set for an awesome day regardless.
Foodie Tip of the Week: Elk… for breakfast (lunch or dinner too really). Earn your turns before you go in, catch an early lift, do a few laps then ski (or board) on down. That way, the amply proportioned brekkie goes down a treat. Eggs Benedict (sub in Salmon for that Vitamin D) or the Savoury French Toast are my picks, though my boys say the Big Breakfast or the mega toastie are the go. Bon Appetit.
Now, get out there, burn off that breakfast and have some fun in the best conditions we’ve had for a start to the season in twenty plus years! •

The Secret of Snow…
Did you know that Falls Creek’s high alpine location brings significant natural snowfalls and our snowhugging, largely south-facing slopes help to retain that snow longer? Did you also know that our snow doesn’t stay great all by itself?
Falls Creek’s massive snowmaking system (almost 20km of underground pipes) is able to generate quality man-made snow at the flick of a switch. We draw water in a virtuous, closed loop cycle from the largest alpine lake in Australia ensuring almost endless snow-making capabilities.
Mixing water and highly pressurised air under the right combination of temperature (below -2°C) and humidity is crucial to the amount and quality of the snow that’s produced. This is where art and science collide to make snow without a single cloud in the sky. Clear nights, low humidity and master snowmakers offer the best snowmaking conditions!
Like mad scientists (or more aptly, mad meteorologists) our team constantly watch local and international weather patterns to work out the ideal snow-making windows; the colder the surface on which a snow flake falls, the longer it will stay there.
At the start of the ski season we try to
make a lot of snow to create a frozen base, meaning all the snow that falls naturally, lasts longer. Typically, 20% of the season’s snowmaking will occur in the weeks prior to the season opening to help create that frozen base. 40-50% is produced by the end of June and the remaining amount during July. After this time, temperatures are generally too warm for snowmaking.
So while you’re blissfully sleeping, dreaming of tomorrow’s perfect ski day, our team of master magic makers are manning the web of snow guns that criss-cross the resort, concentrating their snowmaking and slope maintenance efforts in our most popular ski areas and home trails to stretch every inch of natural and man-made snow further.

Guide Trainer Training
One of the keys to the success of Disabled Wintersport Australia programs, both Facilitated Camps and Resort Services, is having a pool of well skilled and trained volunteer Adaptive Snowsport Guides. These guides are the fantastic crew of people in black DWA guide jackets that are seen out on the Falls Creek slopes ensuring that our members with various disabilities can safely and capably participate in snowsports.
Our volunteer guides do not gain their skills and knowledge by trial and error, and a key part of being able to ensure we keep building this pool of talented individuals took place at Falls Creek over the past weekend. A small group of experienced Adaptive Guides undertook Guide Trainer Training to provide them with the skills and qualifications to be able to train future DWA Adaptive Guides at each of our Victorian resorts.
Under the instruction of members of the DWA Training and Education Committee, experienced DWA Guide Trainers and Pyeongchang Paralympian Mark Soyer, the candidates worked their way through an extensive curriculum including mountain safety, disability awareness, stand-up adaptive skiing, sit ski lift loading and unloading and sit ski bucketing. The skills and knowledge that they learnt to deliver will enable DWA members with a range of disabilities, including physical, sensory, developmental and cognitive, be safely and capably supported on snow.
This coming weekend will see the early season focus on training continue as these newly trained trainers assist a small team

of already qualified experienced trainers to deliver Level 1 Guide Training to a new bunch of eager volunteers.
As the Falls Creek Resort Services Coordinator, I completed the guide trainer training this past weekend with the aim to be able to deliver more, and more flexible, guide training sessions to locals who would like to become DWA Adaptive Guides. With significant year on year growth in members participating in snowsports through our Resort Services Program there is a greater demand for locally based guides who have flexibility to guide midweek as well as weekends. More information with be communicated about these training sessions over the coming weeks. •

were sent to compete in the Cross Country Disciplines which is two better than previous years. Among the results Barbra Jezersek, Australia’s Leading female skier places 33rd in a field of 90 competitors in the 10km Freestyle which was an Australian Record for Cross Country Skiing at the Olympics. The Lads and Ladies were hotly fancied for the Team Sprint Event as well, coming off a record 10th and 12th place showing at the
World Cup in Germany a few weeks before the Games. The ladies team, consisting of Barbara and Jessica Yeaton, performed well with 12th place ahead of countries like Italy, Austria and Canada. The lads (Cal Watson and Phil Bellingham) finished with 25th place and were up against it with the pace being pushed right from the start (I was watching it and remember seeing some ning-nong Chinese racer set off guns blazing and all for nothing as they ended up coming second last anyway!). “We put in as much as we possibly could, but in the end we were expecting to do better but can’t really do much more” said Callum Watson after the race.

The Aussie Team started off with the Davos World Cup like usual with a big team. In a field of over 100 men and 70 women the Aussies did alright, a special mention to Liam Burton (Jindabyne local) who

competed in his first World Cup in Davos as a U20 skier. The team travelled across central Europe following the circuit in hope to stay on the ideal projectile for ‘Olympic form.’ My spectator highlight for the season was watching Mount Beauty local lad Phil Bellingham qualify 27th in the Men’s Skate Sprint Final in Dresden, Germany on the World Cup. I was with the Junior Team at the time in a hotel in Lichtenstein, we all rushed back after having raced ourselves that morning, illegally stream Eurosport on the lappy, about 15 of us junior athletes huddled around a tiny screen just in time to see Phil’s face on the camera as the commentator called his name. Why was this a highlight? Whilst perhaps not so praised in countries like Norway or Russia, a top 30 result on World Cup by an Australian is something that has only happened a handful of times. I remember Phil said to me a few

Trail Report
Well what can I say, the snow has definitely come. The Falls Creek trail network is rarely this good this early in the year. Just coming from an appreciative standpoint, I’ve been out there already quite a bit, lapping up the sun and snow, so I can give a personalised snow report: Whilst by the time you read this the trails may have expanded, but as a minimum, open trails include; the inner trails, Sun Valley, Mount McKay, The Paralyser (the park), and all along the lake. My favourite so far has been going up the paralyser and around the top section of Heathy Spur seeing the fields of open snow and endless possibilities. I also enjoyed
a peaceful glide around Sun Valley and jumping over a couple of uncovered streams of water across the trail (shhh it was only a couple don’t tell the groomer).•

THE FRYING PAN INN
Legendary Remake
Once upon a time there was a bar in the heart of the village bowl called the Frying Pan Inn. Back in the day, from around 1965 and on, this pub was the place to be. It was the favourite watering hole of ski instructors, mountain staff and the snow loving punters. Located at the bottom of some of the best ski runs on the hill, the Frying Pan became a bit of a legend as far as good time pubs were concerned.
Fast-forward to the next century and Falls Creek was booming with several new and diverse venues. The Frying Pan had lost a little of its shine compared to the new kids on the block. In recent years it had retained a degree of popularity at least with locals, workers and mountain staff who lived nearby. The clientele were younger and their budgets smaller and it might be fair to say that the consumption of cheap alcohol was bigger business than the consumption of

into the hands of new managers for this tired old girl to be cleaned and polished and introduced to the 21st century. Who would have thought that inside this building was a sleek, warm, pretty venue waiting to be uncovered?
Enter Traverse Alpine Group who took over managing Astra and Huski several years back. This season the team at TAG have worked their hospitality magic on Cloud 9 and the Frying Pan. Bruno Da Motto is the food and beverage manager for all of TAGs venues in Falls Creek. Bruno has 18 years experience in the hospitality industry including stints working in France and the UK before coming to Australia in 2003. Bruno has a desire to restore the ‘old school cool’ vibe to the Pan and on first visit it seems he is right on track. As far as the new décor goes a combination of wood, stone and metal creates a rustic warm and welcoming atmosphere, not unlike a European alpine hut. no open fireplace. I learn it is all used to fire the action in the kitchen. The main room is airy and spacious filled with wooden tables and chairs. Out the back on the lower level there is a bar and a sunken games room that houses a pool table, a ping-pong table and a fooze ball table. There are guests playing games and having a hoot on every table.
On entering the Pan this week the most noticeable thing now is the open kitchen housing an impressive wood fired grill. A solid bed of coals is used to grill various meats and meals giving off some mouthwatering aromas. Rowan and Nestor man the grill tonight both wearing lovely oldfashioned leather aprons that look great but also offer protection from the radiant heat. The aprons fit in well with the over-all rustic feel of the space.
Head Chef Joel Atherton hails from Adelaide but has lived and worked all over Australia including other ski resorts in Victoria. Joel has created a menu to offer the best you would expect from a groovy BBQ Bar. To accompany the fabulous food the Pan offers a great selection of craft beers and cider with a heavy bias on Australian producers. The wine selection is similar, largely local and good quality selections. We chose a 2016 Shiraz “Bests Bin1” from Great Western to help us relax into our task ahead.

of wings looked pretty daunting but we had no problem polishing them off as they were crisp and juicy and had just the right amount of ‘zing.’ When it came time to try the main meals I chose a Charcoal Grilled Wagyu Burger that really delivered on taste. The luscious smoky BBQ flavour was spiced with crisp tart slabs of pickle - I am an old school fool for pickles on a burger. My companion chose the Pork Fennel Smoked Paprika sausage and we added a side of char roasted vegetables. That wood fired grill works wonders on meat and veges alike. For the first time ever we had no
room to sample the desserts but the team made an executive decision to force-feed us one of their Caramel Apple Pies and many blessings on them - it was divine!

It Just Gets Better!!
The purpose of this paper is to help our visitors maximise their experience of the area. All visitors are vital to our economy and we here at the paper endeavour to show folks that they have chosen a great place in which to holiday.
The pages of this publication have also been used to reinforce that fact that we live in a wonderful community and we like to stress upon our locals just how important our visitors are.
But, in pointing out the above, there are a couple of issues that need to be addressed.
Falls Creek and the Upper Kiewa Valley are surrounded by National Park and State Forest. We like to think of these areas as

pristine, allowing that there is a certain amount of development and around 3000 people live here. The bulk of these people respect the environment – and don’t litter.
During winter we can have as many as many as 6000 people here at any one time. Practical experience has shown that during winter there is more litter. But does it have to be that way?
Respect for yourself, respect for your fellow man and respect for the environment means simply that no-one should throw any
litter out at any time. Put it on your pocket, on the floor in the car or in the boot – but never leave it outside. There are plenty of rubbish bins in this community to use.
There is nothing worse than cleaning up after a family has wiped their kids bum and left the smelly papers on the side of the road! It is not acceptable and should not be happening in this country.
And, on a positive note, you will also feel better when you know you’re doing your little bit to look after the environment.

groomers, will be just about fully open –which is great for the start of the school holidays. OK, it’s not the full resort, but you can still get in a solid eight hours, exercising all the time, breathing in crystal clear air, and when you do stop for a breather, there is some of the best scenery in the world to enjoy.
One of things that can put a ‘dampener’ on a good day is seeing empty chairs going up the hill when the queue is getting bigger. What we ask folks, for everyone’s sake, is that we get ourselves organised in the queue race. Halley’s Comet (Falls Express); Eagle Express, Towers Chair and Drovers are all quad chairs – meaning that there are four seats on each chair. Everything flows better if those in the queue organise themselves into fours –even if it does mean going up with people you’ve never met. Meet them – they’re lovely people just like you.
Another tip. Don’t get into a lift queue and decide to use your phone. There are enough other elements to focus on –without trying to make a phone call. The best idea is to make your call when you get off the lift at the top. There’s space, there’s privacy and there’s time to make the call.

Posted clearly around the resort – in almost every cubicle – is the Alpine Responsibility Code. Read it, understand it, appreciate it – and then go out and enjoy it all. Skiing/snowboarding is one of the very few activities undertaken on the side of a hill, in all sorts of conditions, with people of all ages and all abilities. Respect yourself and each other!
While we look forward to some more natural snow, (hopefully this week) and the lift company snowmakers work their guns off, there are plenty of activities to keep the family outdoors and active these school holidays at Falls Creek. This week marks the start of school holidays and it looks like being busy. (Hence the rev up to get sorted in queues).

Now is the perfect time for beginners to own the slopes and perfect their skills. With the above mentioned runs open, there are lots of opportunities to learn and enjoy.
The full suite of lessons are available at Snowsports School along with Kid’s Club every day, which gives our mums plenty of time to head off to the Spa for some R&R!
For those new to the snow, take a scenic chairlift ride up Halley’s Comet to the new Cloud 9 and enjoy a hot chocolate or coffee at the café taking in the spectacular views. The Top Shots professional camera people have a shop in Cloud 9 and they can do fantastic whole family portraits in the snow. Sure beats the ‘selfie!’ See the village and surrounding alpine national park from a different perspective with a scenic helicopter flight with Forest Air. They plan on being on the mountain next week. Their number is 1300 731 450.
Whilst school holidays are basically about the kids, the Falls Creek Museum is a great place to spend a few hours. There are fabulous films of the early days and lots of well-presented displays to appreciate. Museum hours are printed in the notice in this publication – or phone 03 5758 1200 to enquire.
The Twilight Tuesdays are also a bit of fun – for everyone. 3:30pm to 5:30pm in the Village Bowl we’ll have fire pits, toasted marshmallows, possibly some boutique beer tasting (for the adults), Pete the Snowdragon and heaps of other ‘fun’ stuff.

Midwinter Snowball 2018
Celebrate Winter with new and old friends at the third annual Midwinter Snowball on July 28th. The Snowball is run by the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley, a charitable association which aims to hold fun events to raise funds to support people and groups in the local area. “The Midwinter Snowball is our major fundraising event for the year and each year it gets bigger and better,” said President Jodi Mann. “We have Melbourne based band Geronimo returning this year – they’ve really got the crowd dancing at both the 2016 Snowball and the New Year’s Eve celebration held by the Cricket Club.”
Tickets are now available on Eventbrite and gorgeous hard copy tickets are also on sale at Sassy Road in Mount Beauty and Wonderland Emporium in Tawonga South. No partner? Upper Kiewa Valley Regional Arts has again secured the award-winning Short Film Programme from this year’s recent St Kilda Film Festival, for showing in the Mount Beauty Community Centre on Friday 6th July. The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission is only $15. The first set of seven films is titled the Director’s Choice, then intermission, followed by the second set of five films, titled Award Winners. All are Australian films, some of which contain themes that require parental guidance, so under 15’s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are animations, dramas, comedies, documentaries and children’s films in the programme.

Thank you to all for supporting TNSC’s first Snow Trek & Travel Mini Series for 2018. It was a day of picture perfect blue skies and an amazing cover of snow!! What a way to kick off the cross country ski racing season at Falls Creek! The day saw 28 kids from under 8’s to under 18 and 9 adults take part in this first event held on Sunday 24th June 2018. New for this year is an adult category, which was trialled in 2017 and requested to be added to the Mini Series programme. The adult category is for any new beginners to XC ski racing, the tour skier, for the parents/family/friends who usually stand on the sidelines and cheer and for the adults wanting to take part in the Hoppet. Literally anyone who is enthusiastic for the sport of XC skiing is welcome. The adults raced after the under 8s and 18s had finished.

Rosemary is a photographer whose journey began as a child with a manual film camera and a dark room. With a writer/ photographer as her beloved father, she spent most weekends hunting (with a camera) for Australian wildlife. Together they printed the glossy black and white images that were published, with her father’s articles, in many Australian publications.
The learning curve continues for her with a digital camera (or two) and computers.
Her passion is to create images of beauty from the world around her. Wild places, cold places and huge skies attract her. The night sky, and the challenges of after-dark photography, is Rosemary’s latest fascination. She has had two successful joint exhibitions, and several solo exhibitions, around Victoria, including Hurstbridge, Moonee Ponds, Lake Mountain and two in Echuca.
Rosemary has experienced competition success at Rosanna Photography Club, in magazines, at the Whittlesea Show and in some international photography competitions. She was delighted to achieve 4th and 5th place in the International Loupe Awards in the Amateur Landscape section in 2013. Recently, Rosemary was honoured to have an image included in the Top 101 Landscapes of 2017, in the International Landscape Photographer of The Year Competition.
Rosemary’s images are available for purchase and they are a wonderful way to bring beauty into your home, school or office space.

On a cold weekday morning in the Upper Kiewa Valley I drove up a muddy driveway to meet Liz Herman on the property she is working on with her partner.
Their progress is impressive. The floor is covered with building supplies and tools, and inside Liz and Shaun are walking about carrying handfuls of both.
I’d known of Liz for a while now, but had never really spoken to her. In fact I knew very little about her. Liz sits down on the couch, and I pull out an old office chair set against a bureau covered in tools.
“Tell me about yourself, Liz. You aren’t from Beauty are you?”
“No, not originally. I’m from France. Well, half-French and half-English - born in France to an English mother and French Father, so
they brought us up as bilingual, and then we travelled a bit when I was young.”
Liz starts detailing her life to date, jumping between continents, years, and a range of different professions. She’s only 30. The details are overwhelming. I was looking for a straight path from a childhood in France to the present day in Tawonga. And there was no decent explanation for her perfect Australian accent. I go back to the start to clarify.
“So when did you first come to Beauty, to actually live here?”
Liz thinks for a while. “It must have been seven, or eight years ago.”
When Liz was young her family moved from France to Vanuatu for six years. Then when she was 12 they moved to Sydney where they stayed for three years.
It was during those three years that Liz started visiting Mount Beauty. There is a family connection to the area: Gebi, the

Austrian who set up and ran the wellknown Gebi’s Ski Hire at Falls Creek, is Liz’s uncle.
“So what happened after Sydney?” I asked Liz continues: “When I was 16 we moved back to France. I finished high school, went to university there, and then travelled around in Europe for a few years. I taught French for a year in Scotland, and I went to Spain to teach English. And that’s when I decided I wanted to become an interpreter. I sat two entrance exams to post-graduate schools in London and Paris, but I failed both of them! So then I was thinking -What do I do now?”
“My mum actually suggested I go to Mount Beauty, stay with Gebi and do a season in Falls Creek. That was 2011.”
More recently Liz has been working at the Falls Creek Childcare. I ask her how she got into that.
“When I was teaching languages I was teaching teenagers, which I found hard. I get on well with them, but I found it

challenging, too. I actually wanted to get out of teaching after I did that in Europe. But I must’ve done some work with kids sometime and really enjoyed it. I can’t remember when.”
“I decided to study early childhood education so I applied for the Masters at Deakin University, which was a pretty lengthy process because I had to prove I could speak English and get my degree transcripts translated and approved - but I got in! Then, when the Manager role at Falls Creek Childcare opened up I applied, and somehow I got it.”
She told me about Childcare, and spoke passionately about the Bush Kinder Programme that she initiated. “The whole thing, it was incredible.”
Liz is no longer the Manager at the Falls Creek Childcare, but she’s still working weekends throughout winter.
“My career is over!” She laughs “After only a few short years.”
But there is something else that has taken Liz’s passion and time. I ask her about her company Argent Silversmith.

“Jewellery is now my main focus. Two winters ago a friend taught me how to silversmith, and I absolutely loved it. The night after she taught me how to make a ring I bought tools and some silver! And I started making. And as I made, people wanted to buy what I was making. It’s just progressed from there.”
Liz points out the window to a potting wheel sitting on the wet grass. “I’m also soon to be a master potter,” she laughs “once I learn the skills!”
“Can’t be that hard…” I say sarcastically. “Apparently it is!” She laughs again.
Given Liz’s ability to pick up new talents, I wouldn’t be surprised if I came back a fortnight later to find Liz deftly shaping a spinning clay pot.
I ask her why - of all the places she had lived – she is ‘settling down’ here?
“My mum loved the area before I was born. Perhaps she passed on some of that love to me. When I came back seven years ago it just felt like home.”
