fter the opening weekend festivities, often we wonder, “Ok, well what now?” Well as the snow looms in the not too distant horizon (it is probably falling by the time you read this), us cross country skiers wonder what can we do while we wait for the snow?
The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
Many people have set skiing goals for this winter; for example finish the 42km Hoppet, podium on the Vic Junior Champs or maybe win your age group at in the 7km Joey Hoppet. This week I want to look at what we can do to better our sport if there is no snow around. Don’t worry, I’m not a pessimist or suggesting the snow won’t stay, but just want to talk about the training you can do if stranded back home in town when the kids are at school (kids are like fog at an airport sometimes).

delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage.
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
What can you do? Cross Country is fundamentally a sport about fitness, and the fitter you are the more enjoyable the sport gets. Even as a leisure activity fitness is a key ingredient to having more fun. Start with running, cycling, swimming, rowing etc.
Joining a football club is also a great idea if

Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig
you need inspiration to run. Just whatever you do don’t play cricket, sorry, just saying. The fitness gained from regular exercise like these is really valuable for getting a good healthy baseline for hitting the real stuff. For example, my old man is trying to do

game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. the Hoppet again this year after a few years out, he can’t run because his knees won’t let him anymore, but he has been out there on the road-bike pumping out the K’s in Melbourne.
Thinking a little more specific now, if you want to ‘hit the snow running’ as they say, and you consider yourself a bit of a ‘Go-Getter’ a great recommendation is roller-skiing. Many of you will be familiar with the training method. I am a long time member of the club and if you aren’t familiar with the term ‘roller-skiing’ you might be familiar with ‘roller-skates,’ ‘skiing on the road’ or ‘street skis.’ This is basically cross country skiing for pavement/road type surfaces and goes a long way to preparing the body for skiing.
The weekend’s program sort of goes like this. Saturday: 9am to 16:00 is compulsory practice. 10am to 18:30 is rider registration and Info Tent open. 17:00 to 17:30 is rider briefing. Roller-skiing actually has its own World Cup series performed in the Northern Hemisphere summer - it’s a proper thing. The 100m world record for Roller-skiing is 11.03 seconds. Buy a pair of ‘wheels’ and some tungsten tips to put on your ski poles and find a path or closed off road to practice vital on snow skills. In Melbourne I’ve found well over 50km of roller skiable trials to roller-ski on. Mostly on bike paths and in parks. The next best thing, and something which is very easy, is to go running with poles. Somewhere hilly is good for this.
To put this in context, this kind of training is also what the best skiers in the World are doing right now as they prepare for winter in December. The reigning World Sprint Champion Frederico Pellegrino, an Italian, just finished a summer training camp in Sardinia, with Team Italy where they cycled around the whole island and swam at the beach each day. The World 100m Roller-ski record holder Ludvig Jensen enjoyed a trip to Nice in France where he roller-skied along the many bike paths they have beachside. French Distance Champion Maurice Magnificat has recently just summited the 4000m high Mont Blanche three times in three days, on bike, foot and roller-ski respectively as part of his summer training.
‘Something to get you started?’
If you find yourself needing to do some off-snow training this year, here is a quick starter guide to what a week might look like based on all the ideas which have been discussed. This is a custom plan by your journo, free of charge, no worries.
Monday: Rest day. Tuesday: Easy Run, 30minutes. Wednesday: Gym. Thursday: Bike Ride, 45minutes. Friday: Gym (optional). Saturday: Interval session, Bike/ Run/Swim, 5x2minutes hard. Sunday: Rollerski, 45mins.

It may be a weird time of year but it’s also an exciting time of the year, a time to see if the work will pay off and you’ll hit the snow feeling fresh and strong. There are not many better feelings. So make sure to throw the excuses out the window and give

James “Wongy” Wong is the new Operations Officer at the Falls Creek CFA. I dropped by the Station for a chat.
TW: “Hi James. Tell me about the Falls Creek CFA.”
James: “Falls Creek CFA is a 12-month of the year brigade. There’s a community of people, a core group of about 12 who are passionate about this environment and the Brigade.”
TW: “How did you end up here?”
James: “It’s kind of been 12 years in the planning, to work in the alpine space. This environment has been a passion of mine and it was an opportunity to combine work with this complex environment. There are a lot of challenges up here, which really drives me to build capability for the community, for the CFA, for emergency management, and also for myself.”
TW: “What are the specific challenges for the CFA up here?”
James: “The influx of people is a unique challenge up here. Some people don’t have a lot of knowledge around safety in an alpine environment – whether that’s driving on the roads or clothing. Some of the other complexities are the isolation – there’s one road in and one road out, and there have been landslides and the road gets blocked.”
“Another issue is evacuations - because of the temperature. You throw snow on the ground and at night people aren’t dressed to evacuate. People are up here to enjoy a

holiday and don’t expect that type of thing to happen.”
TW: “Apart from fire call outs, what else does Falls Creek CFA deal with?”
James: “Fire Brigade is more than just fire. We deal with hazardous materials, chemical spills or gas leaks. There’s responding to car accidents. We also support Ski Patrol, SES and Victoria Police in cases of landslides or even chairlift evacuations, and potentially any search and rescues that may occur. Particularly up here, the emergency management approach is all hands on deck.”
TW: “Where have you come from?”
James: “I grew up in Templestowe, but I live in Chadstone with my wife Freya and two kids Jasper and Ruby. They’re coming up here at the end of June. Jasper is 8 and Ruby is 5, turning 6 in August.”
TW: “Why did you join the CFA?”
James: “I always wanted to be in the emergency services. I initially applied to become a police officer, then I saw advertisements for Fire Brigade, and I thought, well, everyone likes a fire-fighter. So I changed course and got in. I haven’t looked back since.”
TW: “What’s been your motivation to come to Falls Creek?”
James: “The motivation is to work in a complex environment, and to be part of an alpine community. I’ve done it overseas in Colorado, but never here at home. I’m also a telemark skier, and enjoy backcountry skiing and snow camping.”
TW: “What are your first impressions of Falls Creek and the Valley?”

James: “I love the landscape. The Victorian Alps have always been a passion. I really enjoy how community-minded everyone is, and how passionate everyone is about Falls Creek and seeing it succeed.”
TW: “And if someone wants to get involved in the CFA?”
James: “Come and knock on the door. CFA is always looking for committed, passionate people. If someone’s going to be here consistently, season in, season out, or even a new resident - that’s the type of people we’re looking for. We train on a Wednesday night.”
“The Brigade is only successful because of its dedicated volunteers, and I acknowledge their support.”
TW: “Thanks, James. Good luck for the season.” • Struan Jones

Falls Creek officially opened the winter season on Saturday, 9th June. Despite the lack of natural snow, (the homage to the snow gods may have got lost), there was still plenty to celebrate.
Return visitors make their annual pilgrimage to the resort to catch up with old and new friends alike or to just be part of the alpine community Falls Creek is so well known for.
Over the summer months, the resort has been abuzz with construction work. Ranging from Falls Creek Ski Lifts huge investment in replacing the Eagle Chairlift, the substantial upgrades and improved amenity from substantial developments at Mini Flats, Kona Yuki, BSM, Pretty Valley, Les Chalet & Riverina Ski Lodge through to the transformation developments at the new look Cloud 9 and Frying Pan and the changes underway at Dicky Knees and Maggies. The visual impact is stunning and supports the resorts ongoing adaptation and it’s all-seasons alpine village reputation for the many hundreds of thousands of visitors per year.
Resort Board Chairman Jo Shannon says “It really is a wonderful time for Falls Creek. The summer season saw year on year increased visitation, and with the significant investment, visitors will be delighted when they visit this winter season.”
2018 also sees Falls Creek enters its 71st year as a recognised ski resort and time passed since the first lodge – ‘Skyline’ - was built. The history of skiing on the high plains and clubs that participated in the sport predates this. However, with this initial development came many more, and the foundations of the resort were cemented.
The weekend was also an opportunity to officially welcome and acknowledge the work of three artists whose stunning pieces are on display within the resort as part of the resort’s Arts & Culture strategy.
LOne at Windy Corner, ‘The Throne of Skis,’ the Accommodation Transfer Terminal shelters ‘Snow Wizard’ and the commemorative installation and innovative three-dimensional installation recognising ‘Skyline Lodge.’ Highly accomplished artist Michael Laubli was commissioned to create the ‘Throne of Skis’ using old Snowsports equipment and Falls Creek long term visitor, Trevor Ware, kindly donated the crafted ‘Snow Wizard’ to the resort by way of thanks for the memories Falls Creek has created to him and his family.
ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016.
On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?
Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.
A busy schedule of events including the official opening of the Eagle Chair - by Falls Creek Ski Lifts, the celebration of the new Disabled Winter sports Australia facility at Howman’s Gap, attending the Falls Creek Alpine Association “Muster” and the Falls Creek Meeting with various stakeholders, then the culmination of season opening with fireworks in the Village Bowl. Once winter is well underway the events schedule is again packed with plenty of options for everyone. Activities available both on the snow and in terms of the resorts après offering, continues to be the envy of all other mountains. You can access information on all of this at www.fallscreek. com.au, or visit the information centre to load up on what’s happening around the resort this season. •
MR: How did you get into riding?
Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series. MR: raced?
Ben: three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

With 11 of the last 25 opening weekends having been celebrated with no snow to be seen, season 2018 at Falls Creek still opened, like all those before it, with rousing celebration - be it catching up with mates, old and new; the excitement of finding out all the changes that had occurred across the resort since last snow season; and of course, getting a first ride on Falls Creek Ski Lifts new Eagle Chair.
In between official engagements, I got to meet up with the Traverse Alpine Group at the freshly renovated Cloud 9 - all I could say was… “WOW”! Of the many upgrades, changes and additions up there, my highlight would have to be, the toilets. YEP… the toilets. All the regular visitors to Falls Creek will know what I mean!
I anticipate my excitement will quickly be overtaken by the first opportunity I get to

For the grownups, the mezzanine bar will become quite the favourite, with its comfy chairs and spectacular views. As we get more snow (it’s falling as I write), exploring the other new offerings on-piste, at Maggies and Dickie Knees’ only adds to new experiences for the season.
The team from Disabled Wintersports Australia were also on hand to open the new Alpine Accessible Accommodation facility at Howman’s Gap. A “first of its kind” above the snowline in Australia, it is the culmination of the vision and passion of the dedicated crew at DWA. Overcoming obstacles or challenges is something DWA and its members know all to well, and this development presented a few more prior to its completion. The result however is a facility that will provide opportunities, experiences and lifelong inspiration and memories. The Chair of DWA, Paul Lamb, shared several stories about the work they do and the opportunities they can provide for their members. With heartfelt emotion he bought a few watery eyes to the conversation and to those around him. The organisation’s purpose and its volunteers are nothing short

of inspirational. Here’s to a tremendous year and an even brighter future.
With the beginning of every season, all the prognosticators proffer up their expectations for the season ahead. Whilst the professionals use science, climate models and powerful computers to make their predictions, some others rely on, let’s say, a more unconventional approach.
From one such alchemist, better known for his famous status as restaurateur extraordinaire, the inimitable Barry Iddles from Elk @ Falls, explained over a glass of the Bannockburn wine region’s finest Pinot Noir (or two), a theory about the crabs at Blairgowrie, in Port Philip Bay.
As such, #crabwatch2018 was borne. The theory being, when the water temperature falls below 14°C, the crabs moult their shells and as quickly as they’ve come, they leave the bay. What does that have to do with snow? Well, allegedly, within six days of this happening, it snows, and the season officially kicks off with biblical proportioned snow falls. #nowivehearditall…
Given the forecast (www.snowsbest.com/ snow-forecast/falls-creek/) for the next week or so, those crabs better get a move on… We have it on very good authority (Barry in his speedos at Blairgowrie), that Port Philip Bay is averaging 13°C.
Now, with snow on the way, get out there and have some fun… •
Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

Every now and again, I need to pinch myself… to take a moment to reflect on what a privilege it is to be a part of the local community living, working and feeling truly connected to this stunning alpine environment. Last weekend’s official opening was no exception and I can’t help but feel that I simply belong.
As a ski lift company, we talk a lot about the importance of creating meaningful connections with our guests, helping them to feel like they too belong. But what does that look like, how can we achieve it and why does it even matter?
Today, as household incomes grow, so too has pressure around how that income is spent, meaning people are more concerned with value-for-money than ever before. Value is quite different to price. Price is all about getting the best deal… but value is about what’s most important to you – and it’s different for everyone. As a result, it’s no surprise that demand for value is leading to a rapidly increasing desire for highly tailored experiences. A tough gig for businesses!

For us, responding to this growing challenge draws upon a deeply centred community purpose which is ‘To share an extraordinary mountain life.’ Success for us is achieved when we have ignited a growing obsession for snow in our guests to ensure they fall in love with and stay connected to Falls Creek for life. It’s why we invest in developing new programs, create exciting new events to inspire and attract and train the best people available. But it’s not just all about new comers to the resort; it’s also about our existing advocates... you know who you are!
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.
Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.
So what’s your snow obsession?
If you have any specific agenda items, please email http://joprothero@fallscreek.com.au.

Australia’s first dedicated alpine accommodation for people with a disability and athlete training base has been formally opened at Howman’s Gap, (4km from Falls Creek) by Danielle Green MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Major Events and Regional Victoria. The opening took place last Friday8th June.
YMCA Victoria in partnership with the Victorian Government and Disabled Wintersport Australia opened the $3.79 million Howman’s Gap Alpine Accessible Accommodation Centre which will allow all-abilities winter sports athletes to hone their skills on some of Victoria’s best slopes.
The 36 bed facility opens up new sporting pathways for people of all abilities that love their winter sports. It will be a modern

“You’ve only got one head – put a lid on it!”
“This is more than just beds and recreation in a stunning location; this is an opportunity for us to change our practices and mindset with the whole community and all abilities in mind.” YMCA Victoria CEO Mr Burns said.
“We are incredibly proud to be part of this nationally significant initiative to create more accessible, more inclusive and more innovative services so everyone can hit the slopes.” Burns said.
The new facility will also open more doors for more people with a disability to participate in Disabled Wintersport Australia’s fun snow sports programs.

Disabled Wintersport Australia President, Paul Lamb is excited about what the new facility can offer its members.
“It allows us to serve unmet demand in our disability programs with accessible accommodation,” He said.

At a guess, around 50 people attended the opening – enjoying a round of speeches, a couple of fine videos showing the experience of young and older DWA members before then going outside to enjoy the actions of Danielle Green as she broke the Champagne bottle to ‘launch’ the new Alpine Accessible Accommodation Centre.
Another pleasing part of the weekend was the informal chat and tipple courtesy of Falls Creek Alpine Association, this year hosted by the AAC. The business part was where President David Risby handed over a cheque for $750 to Paul Lamb, President of DWA.
This contribution is greatly appreciation as there are still a couple more issues to sort.
Completing the installation for the workshop and fit-out room ($10,000), fitting out the co-ordinators flat ($40,000) and installing the Elevator ($100,000).

Anyone with a few spare dollars would feel good about contributing to such a worthy operation. Check out the video by Nik Sugden about DWA and made last season.

1. Beware of Bridges– Bridges are the first to freeze and ice over in cold weather. Unlike roads which lose their temperature on their surface, bridges are exposed to the wind and cold from underneath which promotes the perfect environment for black ice. Even if the roads seem okay in mild snow, use extra caution when you get to a bridge.
2. Clean Your Car– Don’t slack off when it comes to cleaning your car. Even if you’re just driving a short distance, that snow of your roof is a hazard. It can fall in front and obstruct your vision, or it can fly off on to the car behind you which is seriously dangerous. Also, always keep cleaning essentials in your car all winter long such a scraper and shovel and make sure your car has enough windshield wiper fluid for the season.

3. Keep Sand or Salt! Getting stuck in the snow is the worst, and the more you try to accelerate out of it, the more you dig yourself deeper. Adding some sand or salt in front of your tyre will provide the traction the tyre needs for you to drive your way out. Keep a bag in your boot if possible.
4. Emergency Kit– While emergency kits are important all year round, they are extra crucial in the winter months.

Now this apartment is in a brilliant location with the new Eagle Quad Chairlift right next door and sits above the Falls Creek Sports hire and gear shop and the fabulous BE Foodstore Restaurant. It is also surrounded by other fine establishments like the new Flying Pan Inn, Easy Eats and the Falls Creek Hotel. Easy access from the Bogong High Plains Road is via the Gully Chair.
This would be one of the best returning properties in the resort, with a very relaxed management agreement and no restriction on owner use. Your agent has sold a couple of these units recently and believes this property would be an excellent purchase
The apartment is fresh and has a lovely spacious feel with good natural light.
All the bedrooms/ bathrooms are upstairs and the lower level features a large open plan living are with balcony overlooking the Summit. This apartment features plenty of storage in the apartment and also in the roof space, plus large drying room.
In the summer months, (we describe as everything not winter), the location can be

easily accessed by car with adequate parking out front or nearby.
While the quality of your enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted, it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds value to a purchase in the village. Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with some being accessed from the Village Bowl. Add to these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your exploring, whether on foot, on a horse or on your bike is endless. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic
Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria.
The afore-mentioned suite of summer activities includes the Alpine Challenge, the Mile High Dragon Boats, the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, the Easter Festival as well as regular mountain bike shuttles.
Apartment 5 has a strong rental history showing good returns in excess of 5% and is truly special. Call today to arrange an inspection. An information pack is available on request.
