Round One - Falls Creek
T2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES
In 2018, Falls Creek enters its 71st year as a recognised ski resort and celebrates the time passed since the first lodge – ‘Skyline’ - was built. The history of skiing on the high plains and clubs that participated in the sport predates this. However, with this initial development came many more, and the foundations of the resort were cemented.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
From those formative and pioneering developments, Falls Creek’s destiny as a resort was set. Today, with ongoing investment, the resort continues to renew, refurbish and evolve its offer for the many hundreds of thousands of people who visit and use the resort all year-round and, our local community who also call it home.
On opening weekend and throughout the season, take a walk, or a ski or board through the village streets and the tremendous work undertaken by stakeholders can be seen everywhere. On the slopes, ambitious and world class venues are evolving in stages. These developments will be iconic and showcase the resort, representing the best there is to offer on the slopes, anywhere!
Rarely do I single out stakeholders; however I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the Traverse Alpine Group for their commitment to this project and Falls Creek Ski Lifts for recognising the importance of offering the opportunity externally.
Falls Creek has a bold history. Surrounded by the Bogong High Plains, rich with its indigenous significance as a meeting and gathering place, to the boldness of the hydro scheme that underwrote its development. Add to this the effort and toil invested by many out of a passion for Snowsports over the decades and now that legacy is being carried forward in an ever bolder and determined way.

The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
The visual impact of this investment is selfevident throughout the village and on the ski slopes. To describe these developments as transformational in the revitalisation and rebuilding of many of the resorts physical

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig
Looking at the winter events schedule, it is again packed with plenty of options for everyone. Activities available both on the snow and in terms of the resort’s après offering, continues to be the envy of all other mountains. Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

2018 – A Big Season Ahead
When you are involved in snowsports the lead-up to winter and the opening weekend of the season is always one filled with anticipation and excitement. For the DWA Crew, 2018 is this and more, with everything dialled up that little bit higher as we prepare to celebrate our 40th birthday and the official opening on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend of our Alpine Accessible Accommodation Building at the Howman’s Gap Alpine Centre.
Disabled Wintersport Australia was established in 1978 by Ron Finneran and Bruce Abel as the Australian Disabled Skiers Federation. From the inaugural meeting held in the Piano Bar at Thredbo, DWA has grown over the past 40 years to a point where we now have over 1100 members and operate at all five of the major Australian ski resorts – Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, Thredbo and Perisher. Although the technology of our equipment has advanced significantly and the ski resorts have grown and modernised, the fantastic volunteer base and enthusiasm of our disabled members hasn’t waned.
This weekend will see the official opening of DWA’s Alpine Accessible Accommodation Building at the Howman’s Gap Alpine Centre. This project was born with the announcement back in September 2014 by the Victorian Government of funding for the construction at Howman’s Gap of Australia’s first above snowline fully accessible accommodation facility.
Building this facility in amongst the alpine ash forest and above snowline location of Howman’s Gap has not been without its challenges and inevitable delays have

For a Worthy Cause!
The annual Falls Creek Ice Plunge, now in its 11th year, attracted a record crowd of around 150 brave souls who had the temerity to tackle the chilly waters of Rocky Valley Dam. This proved to be one of the biggest turn-outs yet – all done to achieve several aims.
Firstly, it is almost part of the deal that if you want to work in Falls Creek, then the Ice Plunge is part of the requirement.
Secondly, the event attracts untold media coverage around the country – usually gaining posts on national TV, plus local TV, newspapers and radio.
Thirdly this sacrifice pays homage to the snow gods and we trust that this year they’re listening – and lastly, most importantly we are fitting in with the AFL/MCG Big Freeze at the G where this year, all of the AFL Coaches had agreed to take the plunge on Queen’s Birthday weekend, Monday June 11th – all to raise significant and much needed funds to fight Motor Neuron Disease.
At an altitude of 1600m, Australia’s highest significant body of water provides the setting for what is one of the coolest rituals around. Rocky Valley Dam’s water temperature of 4°C meant it was warmer in the water than out where a chilly -1°C was recorded on its snowy banks.
Falls Creek was awash with colourful costumes and freezing bodies as hordes got into the spirit of the event. Participants were dressed in everything from bikinis to full superhero regalia for the affair. Resort Management CEO, Stuart Smythe, was

Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.
MR: How did you get into riding?
Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,
Taking inspiration from the Ice Bucket Challenge, Falls Creek Resort Management partnered in 2017 with Fight MND to raise funds in the fight to stop Motor Neurone Disease. Last year’s Ice Plunge raised over $3,000 and hopes are for this year’s tally to beat the previous year’s figure.
In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

It’s that time of year again. Opening weekend. Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Another year of the Cross Country News section of the Falls Creek Mount Beauty Newspaper. My name’s Seve de Campo. You might remember me as the XC journo from last year, and I loved working for Ken Bell so much that I’m back again for the season. (he even pays me a little).
What can you expect this year from the XC section? Well I hope this can be a place for a weekly peruse, a chance to read some interesting stuff written by a 19 (almost 20) year old boy trying to glamorise the sport of cross country skiing. Who is your XC Journo?
As I said my name is Seve, named after the golfer ‘Seve Ballesteros’ from the 90s, and I am currently on the Australian Cross Country Ski Team and I am fresh from the World Junior Champs in Goms, Switzerland. As a young’un I grew up skiing at Mount Buller - however after discovering a passion for cross country around the age of 12, Falls Creek became my new home. After finishing school, I spent last year living in Norway for the Northern Hemisphere winter and at Falls Creek for the winter down under.
I can honestly say the quality of skiing I had at Falls Creek last year (as well as the fun I had being part of the Falls Creek seasoners community) was comparable to the best skiing in the world for a lot of

the time. I know that’s a big call but it is true. It is a completely different experience skiing at Falls Creek than to say Sjusjøen in middle Norway or Seefeld in Austria, but it is something I look forward to doing every year. I know probably most people reading this know what I’m talking about when I say I’d almost prefer to be heading out the back of Heathy Spur on a Sunday Morning, fast fresh snow, in a T-shirt, sun shining across the Bogong High Plains, stop, have a drink of water, look around and – well, you get the picture, it’s pretty bloody good. That’s what we can look forward to this winter.
What can we expect for this weekend?
With most resorts managing to find a sprinkling of mother nature’s finest chemically produced snow, one and all will have a chance to have a slushy, sunny slide down wombats ramble before it turns into a Vanilla smoothie on Monday. Don’t worry, even though there won’t be much natural snow on the ground this weekend, if you’re keen to begin your xc season you can sure do that too! All the Xc trails will be well prepped and the Bogon High Plains have ‘hiking trip’ written all over them. You can get the picnic basket out, walk the dog, or go for a little run around before the snow comes. The Windy Corner Café will be fully operating and hiring out bikes as well so be sure to check that out.

We can’t believe how quickly that last six months went! We are all thrilled to see guests and seasonal workers back in Falls Creek and invite you once again to come and visit the Falls Creek Museum. We have a new display, some new items on show, some new volunteers but the same old friendly spirit and enthusiasm to showcase the history of Falls Creek.
This summer has been a fabulously crazy one for the Historical Society with so many wonderful projects from Arts and Culture to Historical Walks and Book Writing. Where do we start?
When you walk around the village this winter please take some time to wander down to Gebi’s and take a look at the newly installed Skyline Steel Cut Sculpture, the final piece in our 70th Anniversary celebrations. If you stand facing the artwork, you should be able to see exactly where Skyline stood in its heyday, right there between pole one and two of The International Poma. The Skyline story is one of friendship and love of snow-sports; two facets of ski village life that still exist today. Over the summer, in partnership with Diana Alpine Lodge and Ken Bell, the Falls Creek Historical Society ran the Historical Alpine Huts Walk and Picnics. It was a pleasure showing off our beautiful Bogong High Plains to so many visitors. History, beautiful scenery and fabulous food. What more could a guest to Falls Creek want? As of the 2018/2019 summer season, the walks will be known as Trails, Tales and Tucker and will be supported by the North East Tourism Kickstart Program.
Skippy St Elmo was a pioneer of Falls Creek. We might even go so far as to say she was ‘The First Lady of Falls Creek’ - in fact

let’s call her memoirs that. With the help of The Holdsworth Trust, the Historical Society is putting her words into a book that will be published before the end of the year. We will let you know more details as they become available.
One major project that is underway is the re-sculpting of Eagle Chair 47, kindly donated to the Historical Society by Ski Lifts in October of last year in recognition of 1947, the year that Falls Creek came to be. We are currently applying to trusts at the moment to have the design work and installation completed by spring 2018. A huge thank you again to Ski Lifts for their generous donation after the Eagle Chair Auction. We look forward to working with them on some public art pieces.

If you travel over that bridge and continue on towards Falls Creek without carrying wheel chains that fit your vehicle, you are breaking the law and may be prosecuted. But, the resort entry fee is critical because it pays for services that visitors use, like snow clearing of the road (so that you can get to the resort), our waste management facilities (some of the best for recycling in Australian resorts), Car parking spaces, the supply of good clean water, the provision of Visitor Information Services (and we all need that occasionally) and our very professional Ski Patrol team (with many members with years of national and international ski patrol experience).

Snow Dance
As part of our Queen’s Birthday weekend celebrations, the team at Stingray QT are putting on a Snow Dance starting from 7pm on Saturday evening in Stingray.
The fun will feature a live DJ, (dead DJ’s don’t do much!), Free Pool, JD ‘Fireshot’ Specials and tucker specials like $20 a kilo chicken wings. Special Guest will be Pete the Snow Dragon! Further details from QT on 03 5732 8000.
Lifts and Runs
At the time of going to press conditions were looking good and the forecast for the weekend is not too bad. Local feedback indicates that bookings are good around the village, at Bogong Village and around Mount Beauty.
The current forecast from the BOM tells us there are chances of snow on Friday and Saturday, and some conditions earlier in the week would allow for snowmaking – but let’s just enjoy what we have.
We should all remember that it is the start of the season and conditions may not be quite ideal - but how much exercise have you done to get ready for a full day on the slopes. I’ll be happy to work out which way to point the skis – after struggling through the pain of getting the boots on.
One thing we can be certain of is that our team, our lift company snowmakers, groomers and staff will be busting their little butts and doing everything possible to make sure we can have the best weekend possible.

challenging environment Dr Zagorski put into practice the skills he has learned and now teaches, through the EMST program. This includes ‘on slope’ emergency care, search and rescue and retrieval.
Dr Zagorski is an active trainer to the Falls Creek Ski Patrol and a member of the Medical Advisory Panel for the Australian Ski Patrol Association. He also provides regular education and training sessions to the local hospital nursing staff, and health education to local groups such as the Men’s Shed. And yes, he is a popular presenter within the community.
And where is all this going you ask?
Well at a recent function, Dr Mark was presented with the Gordon Trinca Medal for 2017.
Gordon Trinca was chair of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ influential road trauma committee from 1975 to 1993, and played a key role in gaining the support of politicians and decision-makers to implement measures to reduce the road toll. As a direct result of campaigning by Trinca and a small group of like-minded concerned citizens such as the late police surgeon John Birrell, Victoria led the world with the introduction of random breath testing, 0.5 laws and seatbelt legislation. Dr Zagorki’s commitment to the Early Management of Severe Trauma and his teachings have been recognised and earned his prestigious award. Congratulations Mark and well done to the rest of the team. •

Bonfire Bonanza
It was all about fire, fun and friends at the Community Bonfire hosted by the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley on Saturday May 19th. A local feature of the High Country Harvest Festival, this year the event moved to a new location behind Falls Creek Coaches in Tawonga South. More than 60 local residents and visitors enjoyed sitting on the hay bale seats toasting marshmallows on the Whipps Designs firepits.
Around sunset the spectacular and soaring bonfire was lit, and flames leapt into the night sky to the delight of everyone present. People brought picnics to share, or sampled the excellent local takeaway food available just down the road. Glow sticks were a hit with the kids (and adults too), and there was plenty of interest in the wood raffle fundraiser. Those who lingered into the night were treated to the acoustic sounds of Bill and Charlie on guitar which added to the cosy fireside feel.
The Community Bonfire provided a great family atmosphere for people to socialise and enjoy the beautiful autumn evening. The event was run by the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley (CCKV), a not for profit organisation whose catchcry is ‘social, charitable, local’. A special thank you must go to Greg McLennan, who sourced all the wood for the evening and created the towering bonfire. CCKV also appreciates the support of Alpine Shire, Falls Creek Coaches, Whipps Designs, Stockpot, Bill and Charlie, NE Country Wholesale Foods, Duggan and Hanlon, and of course our exceptional volunteers. CCKV President Jodi Mann said “This is our biggest and best bonfire yet and we really love the family atmosphere. We’re preparing for our key fundraiser for 2018, the Midwinter Snowball in July so we can provide more support to local people and groups.” She added “The Champagne Club is now taking applications for assistance and we are looking forward to distributing funds

Vale Joan Price
Joan Price (nee Payne) was born in 1928. She arrived in the valley walking beside a horse-drawn cart with the family, the family cow and all their worldly possessions – and the family eventually built a home near the West Kiewa bordered by the highway on one side and ‘Incubator Alley’ (Simmonds Creek Road) on the other.
As the SEC established the Hydro Scheme, Joan worked at the Co-op store and in 1946 met a young soldier just back from the war. Curly Price courted and eventually married Joan. The couple had three children; Lenny, Roma and Dianne.
When Curly passed away at 88 years Joan started to get out more. She enjoyed visiting the kids in their homes; she renewed and made new friendships. She was proud that in all their lives she and her sister Margot had never lived more than four blocks from each other.
When her own physical health failed her and she could no longer work at the Op Shop, she would only allow the support she needed and nothing else – yet she still continued to give to charities.
They say that in an ideal world it takes a village to raise and nurture children and it takes a community to allow an older person to age with grace and dignity.
That is what the community gave back to Joan. When going to the medical centre, the staff made it an ‘outing’ for Joan. Our Chemists and the staff, the Foodworks
friends, the team in the local cafes who kept an eye on Joan while the kids were doing other things. The doctors who listened intently, who followed her wishes; the home carers all made Joan’s life better. You enriched her life.
Joan also wanted to be at home. So in came the community Nurses and the Palliative Care and the GP’s and they helped Joan achieve that wish. Her view out the window was of the mountains and valley she loved and of the garden she tended.
So, thank you to all who helped and supported Joan Price. Your efforts, kindness and caring are really appreciated. •

The Tawonga Red Cross has a proud history of helping people both locally and abroad. I sat down with the President, Cathy Young.
TW: Cathy, everyone knows of Red Cross, but what does Red Cross do?
Cathy: Red Cross helps people both in Australia and Internationally. There are many appeals that we have for overseas causes, and we have Telecross in Australia. Telecross is where people who live by themselves get a daily or weekly phone call from a volunteer.
They also have things like the Breakfast Club, which helps disadvantaged children at school. They also have emergency services when there’s fire or floods.
TW: How old is Tawonga Red Cross?
Cathy: There was a branch here during World War 2, but Red Cross back then was more about supporting the men and

After the War the branch folded, and I believe it was re-established in 1978. There are still a couple of women well into their 90s who were part of that first group.
TW: How did you get involved?
Cathy: I finished work and I was up the street and I saw Helen McDougall. She asked me if I’d like to be involved in Red Cross. I’ve always thought it was a great organisation, and it’s helping people in need and in crises. It’s also a great group of women that are in the Red Cross. It’s just a community thing to do.
TW: Where did you grow up?
Cathy: I grew up in Coolamon in NSW in a farming family.
We came to Mount Beauty nearly 30 years ago. We had two small children and we wanted to give them a country up-bringing. We were in Sydney and had friends down in Chiltern, and we came down and just looked around the area and we got to Mount Beauty and thought ‘Wow, this is a lovely town.’ And then we moved here.
TW: What did you do in Sydney?
Cathy: I was nursing. I actually worked for the Red Cross Blood Bank in Sydney back
in 1984 for two years. My husband is from Sydney.
TW: What do you love most about the town?
Cathy: The views, the serenity. There are a lot of new people here, but I think everyone’s here for the same reason. I just think that really makes Mount Beauty. People are very community-minded.
I’m also with the Mount Beauty Dragon Boat Club. I’m the events manager, and we train a couple of nights a week on the lake and also paddle socially. It’s an amazing spot, to be out on the middle of the lake.
TW: What’s your favourite place?
Cathy: Swimming in the Kiewa River at Redbank. Absolutely! That’s been our special place to swim.

While the snow looks beautiful as it falls, it makes driving way more difficult and increases your chances of an accident significantly. While it’s best to avoid driving in bad weather as much as possible, it’s often unavoidable. If you must hit the road during a snowy winter wonderland, keep these tips and tricks in mind to stay as safe as possible.
1. Drive Slowly– This must be the most obvious thing to state when it comes to driving in the snow, but it has to be said. Really though, actually drive slower and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. The snow makes the roads slippery and reduces visibility so you’ll need to give yourself plenty of more time to react to changing conditions. This advice is heavily aimed at those who drive 4WD or All-Wheel Drive cars. While these vehicles do offer some more traction and control, it does not make you invincible. The roads are still significantly less safe and require slow driving.

TIPS FOR SNOW DRIVING
2. Give Yourself Distance– Most people follow the 2 (or 3) second rule of thumb to calculate the minimum distance they should keep behind from the car in front so that there is adequate time to stop. In the snow, you want to at the very least double this distance. Ideally, triple it. If you do slide or skid on the snow, the farther away you are from other vehicles the safer you’ll be.
3. Lights– ALWAYS have your lights on when driving in the snow. With the reduced visibility, you’ll want to make your surroundings as visible as possible. On the side, you’ll want other drivers to be able to see you as well. But, do not use high beam in fog or snow as it reflects back at you and reduces visibility.
4. NEVER Use Cruise Control- You’ll need extra vigilance and extra control when it comes to driving in the snow. Not only do you need to adjust your speed more frequently when driving in the snow, you’ll also need much more control over steering, even if you’re driving on a straight road.

5. Avoid Slamming on the Break– If your tires start to skid, most people’s first instinct is to panic and slam on the break- don’t do this. Instead ease off the accelerator and try to steer the car out of potential collisions. Slamming on the breaks once your tires have already locked up and lost traction won’t help. Skidding out can be frightening, but try to stay as calm as possible in order to safely slow down and come to a stop.

WHY AMBULANCE SUBSCRIPTION
Because It’s Smart
This publication has run similar articles before. And we will probably continue to run them each year. Your editor would hate to think that someone working or visiting this fabulous resort of ours ends up with a three or four thousand dollar bill for transport to hospital. It can and does happen – and it can be prevented. Read on.
Previously we have quoted figures for this article. But, even without them, the common sense aspect of ambulance insurance is a ‘no-brainer.’
The Good News
Fact Number One: Ambulance membership is cheap. A family membership is now $92.05 per year. A single person membership is now $46.00 per year. In my humble opinion, these figures are way too cheap – but no-one can ever say they could not afford Ambulance Membership. A clever and innovative local lodge manager, as part of his employment contract would include an Ambulance Membership Form – which (unless they could show they were already covered) the employees had to sign – and the payment came out of their first wage cheque. This would be regarded in most circles as excellent management/staff relations.
The following is an excellent example of the benefits of membership – as quoted by Angus.
“I got ambulance cover just before heading off with my mates on a snowboarding trip to Mt Buller. I had been thinking about cover and thought I’d be unlikely to need it but had a few minutes free so opened my laptop and joined online in the car park of the campsite. It took me five minutes and was really easy and really cheap - especially compared to the other ski field costs. We had a great weekend but my trip ended abruptly when I ran out of talent, came off a jump and broke three ribs and collapsed a lung.
I ended up in an Air Ambulance to the Royal Melbourne. The trip in the air ambulance would have cost me $7,500 but

I didn’t even see a bill. I could have had two lifetimes worth of cover and still been ahead. The fall certainly caused me a lot of pain but I’m fully recovered now and it’s a great relief that I don’t have to deal with a huge bill on top of everything else.
