MOUNT BEAUTY RUNNING FESTIVAL

New Courses This Year

The 43rd Mount Beauty Running Festival is scheduled to take place this Saturday the 18th of May. And late entries will be available on the day from 9am. While it is one of the smaller running events in Victoria, the setting in the Kiewa Valley overlooked by Mount Bogong makes it one of the most scenic and the range of distances on offer gives participants of all ages and abilities the opportunity to be part of the action.

A little bit of history is needed here as the event started life in the 1970’s as the Mount Beauty Marathon, with a half marathon added in. The trophy for the 80’s lists marathon winners Danny Flynn, G Beissbarth, N Hooper, T More, W Donald and J van der Ploeg.

The 80’s also saw a quarter marathon added and shortly after the full marathon was dropped and the event became the Mt Beauty Half Marathon. After Covid the half marathon was dropped and the event became the Mt Beauty Running Festival with a 14km trail run added to the offering. This year the committee has put a great deal of effort into improving course routes, by taking them off road onto sealed walking tracks making them more user friendly and even more scenic, as well as reintroducing the 21km half marathon distance to the festival. The 21.1km and 10.6km running

events follow the pristine Kiewa River and feature panoramic views of the surrounding mountains that hug the upper Kiewa Valley, while the shorter ‘pram and child friendly’ 3km event involves a circuit of the Mount Beauty pondage.

Meanwhile the 18km trail run makes use of the extensive network of forest trails that surround the town, taking athletes into the bush and pushing them to new limits with steep climbs, descents and two river crossings.

Organisers have also added an Ekiden Team Marathon Challenge & School Challenge Competition. The Ekiden challenge lets

teams cover the 42.2km marathon distance by combining team member’s results across the 3, 10.6 or 21.1km events. Points are awarded for the positions in which team members cross the line overall in their respective events, for example, if an athlete comes 5th overall but is the 1st female in the half marathon, this athlete will score 5 points for their team. Total combined points are then divided by the number of team members. The team with the lowest points wins.

This event would not be possible without the support of the Mount Beauty & District Community Bank, Alpine Shire and Mount Beauty Foodworks - plus, of course, a large team of volunteers from the local community.

Organisers are set to go and looking forward to a brilliant day of running. More information and the online entry form can be found at www.hoppet.com.au. •

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Autumn 2024 Edition TWELVE 2

Winter Starts with a Splash!

There’s only one way to kick off a Falls Creek winter, and that’s with the Annual Ice Plunge. On June 1st for the past 17 years, loads of enthusiastic (and very brave) locals and visitors fearlessly plunge into the chilly sub 3-degree waters of Rocky Valley Lake.

The event is part of the Big Freeze 10 campaign, which sees communities, clubs and workplaces all over Australia getting dunked and splashed by freezing cold water for a fantastic cause. All proceeds are donated to the vital work of Fight MND, an extraordinary organisation dedicated to finding a cure for Motor Neuron Disease. We’re counting on our local community to help us raise over $5000 for this great cause!

The plunge has become an iconic tradition that not only unites the community but also serves as our version of the age-old ‘snow dance’, a heartfelt offering to the snow gods, in return for a bountiful snow season ahead. Legend has it there is a tight correlation between a large number of plungers and a bumper season! So, if you’re into big snowfalls, you better pull out the swimmers one last time before winter. Thanks to our generous local business, there’s over $2000 worth of prizes up for grabs for the brave swimmers who catch a duck! Prizes include dining, lesson, lift ticket and retail vouchers, Bright Brewery beers and even a Season Vehicle Resort Entry Permit.

This year, we’re turning up the post event festivities with saunas, coffee and hot toddies! That’s right, after the plunge, you can treat yourself to a sauna by the lake thanks to local mobile sauna business Haut Hutt! We’ll be serving barista made coffee, BBQ and hot toddies by Bright Brewery. Come for the plunge and stay for the fun.

Mount Beauty locals Ken and Kim Edmondson from ‘Bumblebee for

Come along and help them reach their goal of 50K by the end of the year! You’ll be able to get your Bumblebee-nies,

BUILDING RESILIENCE FOR A BETTER LIFE

Wonderful Community Initiative

The 2024 autumn Community Resilience Picnic held on Saturday May 4 highlighted the broader definition of community resilience now being promoted by the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre.

All previous bi-annual Community Resilience Picnics have focused largely on natural disaster resilience – being prepared for bushfires, floods and landslides. This focus has been supported by demonstrations and presentations by the CFA, SES, VicAmbulance and Red Cross.

This year the picnic also included an AGL

customer service team giving advice on the most economic electricity plans, as well as the Hume Riverina Legal Services team giving advice on issues such as dealing with Services Australia. This broadening of ‘resilience’ reflects the economic challenges being faced by many Upper Kiewa Valley citizens.

The CFA highlight of the May 04 Community Resilience Picnic was demonstrations of dealing with gas fires using the CFA gas fire training module.

The CFA training modules are hard to access by regional CFA fire services and the date for the last Community Resilience Picnic was determined by Mount Beauty CFA’s ability to get the CFA gas fire training module on site.

Another important CFA safety demonstration was correct use of fire blankets if you have a stove fire, such as flipping the fire blanket over your hands to protect them from flames before you place the blanket on the burning pan.

This fire blanket demonstration also reminded us that if you have a stove fire, you should contact your local CFA and ask them to check for potential burning embers in your ceiling cavity because most over-stove exhaust fans exhaust into the ceiling cavity. Even exhaust mains that exhaust directly outside a building should be checked because they often include plastic components. This CFA check is made free of charge.

Other presenters at the picnic included Tawonga Red Cross who held a cake stall and distributed fire safety activities to children, TREK (Towards Renewable Energy Kiewa), and UKVCA (Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association). Free coffee and food vouchers were handed out to people who engaged with presenters.

The Alpine FM outside broadcast team interviewed presenters and members of the community.

A special thanks goes to the Mount Beauty Men’s Shed who once again manned the barbecue.

We also heard many congratulatory comments from adults from outside the Kiewa Valley attending the junior soccer event being held on the oval behind the CFA, saying they wished they had resilience picnics in their communities.

It would be fair to say that overall the day was a great success and appreciated by all. A special thanks to everyone involved. •

In The Latest Round of Giving

More than $14,000 has recently been donated to dozens of community groups in the Mount Beauty region as part of an annual giving pledge by our local family-owned FoodWorks business.

The latest round of funding takes the total to half a million donated since the program launched 20 years ago.

Every time a customer shops at FoodWorks Mount Beauty, they earn Spirit of the Community ‘donation points’ and can choose where to allocate them.

Each quarter, the points are tallied up and the pledge fund from the FoodWorks store is shared among the organisations that mean the most to Mount Beauty locals.

Nearly every local group is eligible and the distribution of funds is ultimately determined by where customers allocate their points.

These donations are made possible thanks to the generosity of the store’s owners, and Mount Beauty locals, Nick and Karen Cook.

The program is entirely funded by the store, fulfilling a desire to give back, and has been running since the Cooks took ownership of the store from Karen’s parents more than 20 years ago.

More than $500,000 has now been donated since the program’s inception in 2002.

The program has benefitted people and non-profit organisations from all corners of Mount Beauty and the surrounding areas.

One of the most recent recipients, the Country Fire Authority, has received more than $2,000 in donations this quarter across the Mount Beauty and Tawonga brigades, and has been a long-term recipient of the annual giving pledge by FoodWorks Mount Beauty.

Comments from FoodWorks Mount Beauty owners Nick and Karen Cook:

“FoodWorks Mount Beauty is very much at the heart of our local community and our team is proud of their connections with the customers who shop in our store. The support of people in the Mount Beauty region and the value they place in access to a local grocery store is what allows us to give back. It gives us great pleasure to hear and see the positive benefits local groups have been able to achieve through Spirit of the Community pledge funds.”

“In addition to the Spirit of the Community pledge, FoodWorks Mount Beauty strives to contribute through sponsorships and donations of goods – from major sponsors of the Dederang Mount Beauty Football and Netball Club and Mount Beauty United Cricket Club to plenty of in-kind donations of goods to raffles and sausage sizzles throughout the town.”

Comments from Australian United Retailers national operations manager Robert Markezic:

“FoodWorks Mount Beauty is a wonderful example of the important role regional supermarkets play in supporting and uniting a local community. Owners Nick and Karen Cook, along with their extended team, are hardworking, community-minded and committed to serving the people of Mount Beauty.”

COMMUNITY INPUT INVITED

Draft Sports and Active Recreation Master Plans

Alpine Shire Council's Sports and Active Recreation Master Plans project has reached a significant milestone, with the release of its draft Schematic Drawings for community feedback.

EMERGENCY

Project update

The draft Schematic Drawings include proposals for Pioneer Park in Bright, the Sports and Education Precinct in Mount Beauty, and Myrtleford’s town centre sports and recreation facilities.

Developed as part of ongoing efforts to enhance sports and recreational facilities across the municipality, these drawings reflect input of both key user groups and community members.

Consideration has been given to current and future community use of the identified reserves and parks, ongoing maintenance requirements and costs, user feedback and experience, and key updates that will ensure facilities and infrastructure are safe, accessible, and inclusive.

The Master Plans are supported by a strong evidence base and align closely with the Alpine Shire Sport and Active Recreation Plan 2022-2033.

Alpine Shire Mayor, John Forsyth, emphasised the importance of community engagement in shaping the future of these important community spaces.

"In the development of these draft Schematic Drawings, we consulted with 63 sports and recreation user groups, had discussions with nine state sporting associations, services and schools, and

received almost 400 survey responses from the wider community," he said.

"Feedback now will ensure the final Master Plans successfully address the issues and needs of the community that we've already heard, and any feedback received during the public exhibition period will be taken into consideration."

Cr Forsyth said the draft Schematic Drawings represent a shared vision for vibrant, inclusive, and accessible sports and recreational environments.

"We invite all active users and residents to provide their feedback as we work towards creating spaces that meet the diverse needs of our community," he said.

"Whether you're a regular user of these facilities or an occasional visitor, it's important to have your say so we can hear from as many people as possible and get these plans right."

Community members can view the draft Schematic Drawings and submit their feedback online by visiting engage. alpineshire.vic.gov.au/sport-and-activerecreation-master-plans.

To view printed copies of the draft drawings and fill out a hard copy feedback form, visit our Customer Service Centre in Bright, or libraries in Bright, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford.

The public feedback period is open until Friday, 31 May 2024.
