CHERRY FEST The Return of Music Festivals

M

usic Festivals have always been an integral part of Mount Beauty’s community spirit. Festivals like the town-taking-over Mount Beauty Music Festival, which celebrates not only music, but art, craftmanship, community, and much more. The bouncing, boisterous Sweet Valley Sounds, which repeatedly brought crowds far and wide, brought extraordinary music from everywhere. From classic local acts such as Spooky Ukies, to ARIA AwardWinning artist Nicky Bomba, to Triple J conquerors Caravana Sun, to even international tourers Dallas Frasca and Her Gentlemen… It had the lot. It was revamped in 2020 as Gather Festival, which not only showcased the likes of musicians Mitch King and The Voice finalist Tanya George, but also craft beer, wine, mountain biking, and everything else our valley is known and loved for. And now, on November 12th, there comes another. Cherry Fest will be the first big music festival held in Mount Beauty in three years, and we cannot be more excited for it! Held on par with Al’s Skate Co NorthEast Skatepark Series, the festival will not only embody Mount Beauty’s beloved community spirit with local food and beverages, but will showcase only the best BMX, Scooter and Skating talents from Albury, Wodonga and surroundings in the tour’s 14th round, kicking off at 11am. Get ready for skills, spills, and way, WAY too many thrills. And, of course, the music itself. The Cherry Fest line-up shows the bright future of music stemming from our regions, with only the finest musicians tantalising you with their art and performance.

Bright’s Mieke Bosland will be the first to hit the stage at 12:30pm, with her unforgettable, neo-indie acoustic anthems. Up next, prepare to be charmed by the jazz guitar of Mount Beauty’s own Tawhiti Pahina, who may or may not sneak some Flight Of The Conchords into his set (shhh!). Finally, headlining the event from 2:30pm onwards will be Melbourne’s Dylan Cosgriff And The Omens, who will tear up the stage with their high-energy blend of originals and classic covers, and their eccentric, explosive live show – including Cosgriff’s new single ‘Cherry Socks’! Three unforgettable acts to make your Sunday perfect. From the bottom of our hearts, we cannot thank everyone who helped put this together enough. From the committee at Mount Beauty Music Festival to the Alpine Shire Youth council, from the community master chefs to the incredible musicians, we are super excited to be presenting Cherry Fest on November 12th… It’s time to make it loud - VERY loud.

Festival will be held at Mount Beauty Skatepark, next to the netball courts, in collaboration with Al's Skate Co Tour Comp. For more information, contact the Music Festival on this number: Mb: 0404 674 854. •

75th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Mount Beauty Primary

O

ur Primary School has had three identities in its 75 year history. Mount Beauty Primary No 4644/ Higher Elementary/High School. To celebrate this history and 75th Birthday Re-union will be held at the Primary School on the 4th November 2023 starting at 11am – 4pm with BBQ lunch available. 1948: The Mount Beauty Primary School No 4644, was proclaimed by the Victorian Education Department at the request of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria for the children of its growing workforce on the Kiewa Hydro-electric Scheme. It was temporarily housed in the newly built Recreation Hall, now known as the Tennis Club, and had 28 pupils. 1950: The first stage of the present school was opened with 170 pupils from Prep to Year Seven.

Construction of the new Mount Beauty State School winter 1949 being viewed by many of the students with their teacher, Miss J Bell. From the SEC Magazine June - October 1949.

1951: Four new rooms were built with enrolment increasing to 303 pupils. 1953: With the number of pupils increasing to 403 pupils from Prep to year 10, the school was declared a Higher Elementary School. 1955: A new wing of four rooms was added. 1958: The enrolment of the school rose to 617 - 436 Primary and 181 Secondarystudents. It was at this point that the School Committee lobbied the Education Department for a separate High School. 1963: The Education Department decided that a High School was required and the Higher Elementary School was officially divided into two schools - Mount Beauty High School and Mount Beauty Primary School. 1964: Two principals were appointed, one for each school. Later in the year the students carried their furniture across the oval to the brand new Mount Beauty High School building. Since then both schools have had individual identities. Mount Beauty Primary School has a wonderful history and is a very special place for many of us. Please join us at 11am on Saturday 4th November to help celebrate this significant milestone. • 4

On November 11 the Brigade will celebrate their 75 years of service. That day will be attended by current and past members as well as Regional CFA officers and invited guests. Lunch and speeches and Service Awards as well as the toast to the Brigade’s future will be held in the marquee. The day will conclude with a Barbeque and lots of reminiscing.

...and we're proud of it!

ARIEL'S LAUNDRETTE

On SUNDAY 12th November the station will be open to the Community to share in the static displays and memorabilia and perhaps learn a little more about what we do and how we came to be doing it. The Fire Brigade is for the Community, and we would welcome you joining our Celebrations on this day. •

COMMUNITY INPUT SOUGHT Short Stay Rental Accommodation Local Law

T

he Alpine Shire community is being asked to share their stories, experiences and opinions on short stay rental properties to help Alpine Shire Council develop a new local law. General In December 2022, Council resolved to engage with the community to develop a Short Stay Rental Accommodation Local Law - one outcome of Council's Affordable Housing Analysis and Action Plan project. The aim of the Local Law will be to ensure there is an appropriate standard of management of Short Stay Rental Accommodation to help preserve neighbourhood amenity. Alpine Shire Mayor, John Forsyth, said housing affordability and availability has

deteriorated in the Shire over the past five years for a variety of reasons, including the increase in the number of properties being turned from long-term into short-term accommodation. "With the support of the community through engagement and feedback, we are developing a draft Local Law that will help regulate the Short Stay Rental Accommodation industry in the Alpine Shire – an industry that is currently unregulated," he said. "A new Local Law can help minimise the risk of guests staying at short stay accommodation affecting the peace and quiet enjoyment of neighbours, and potentially implement a registration and renewal system to support the regulation of this industry within the Shire." While Cr Forsyth acknowledged that a local law wouldn't be able to limit the number of Short Stay Rental properties within the Shire or necessarily see properties returned to the long-term rental market, but it is important to put some measures in place to help manage the industry. "The impact that housing affordability and availability has on our community is significant, and we need to keep the health and wellbeing of our community at the forefront of what we do," he said. "If this Local Law is able to lessen the impact of holiday accommodation guests on the amenity of those who live around them, we're heading in the right direction - to do this, however, we need to know

exactly what the impacts of Short Stay Rental Accommodation is having on our community. "We encourage all community members and property owners to provide input by filling out our survey, or coming along to one of our market pop-ups or community drop-in sessions to have a chat to one of our Councillors or team members." You can find more information about upcoming community information sessions and the survey online at www.engage. alpineshire.vic.gov.au/ssra-local-law, or pick up a printed copy from our libraries in Bright, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford, or Council's Customer Service Centre in Bright. Community engagement for this project will close on Wednesday, 31 January 2024. •

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2024 Edition ONE

SUMMERTIME …and the Preparing is Easy

A

s spring temperatures heat up and we watch fires breaking out in NSW and Queensland, it’s time for Upper Kiewa Valley residents to start preparing for our local bushfire season. It’s easy to believe that after two years of La Nina and our valley looking so green, that we can put our preparations on the back burner for a while. Unfortunately, this is not true. People attending the next Community Bushfire Resilience Picnic next November 4, will be reminded that preparing early helps not only you, but all the emergency services that turn out when a fire starts. Your summertime preparations will be made so much easier by listening to all the expert advice you can get at the picnic. The picnic will feature first-hand information on how to prepare for the first 72 hours during any emergency provided by Alpine Shire, home fire safety demonstrations by the CFA, an Ambulance Victoria “Push, Shock Demonstration”, and the DEECA always popular fire table. The picnic is, as usual, being organised by the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood House Keep Calm Committee (KCC). The CFA has warned that the predicted El Niño weather pattern means Victorians can expect a hotter and drier summer than recent years, and communities should begin preparing their properties and creating a bushfire survival plan.

It’s important to remember that the CFA’s first Fire Danger Period (FDP) that was announced for Monday, 9 October for the Wellington and East Gippsland Shire Councils was one of the earliest FDPs the CFA has ever announced. When the FDP was announced CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan reminded Victoria that while A photo from a recent Resilience Day picnic and information day gives us a bit of an idea of how many organisations there are in the community to crews are ready to respond help us all stay safe. November 4th is the next day. Local Ambulance Victoria members will give a Call, Push, Shock demonstration which tells us how to best assist family or friends suffering from a heart attack. According to Ambulance Victoria, on average, only 10 per cent of people with an ‘out of hospital’ cardiac arrest will survive. However, when bystanders intervene by calling 000, beginning CPR by using the Call, Push Shock strategy, or using a defibrillator (AED), the chance of survival is increased by 72 per cent.
