In February 2023, Kiewa Valley Sports & Spinal Physiotherapy ticked over 20 years of practice in Mount Beauty. Run by Greg and Fiona McLennan, KVSSP started off in very modest circumstances, sharing rooms with Nevin, Lenne and Gross at 34 Hollonds Street. Greg was near the end of a post-grad and had final exams (in Rome, Italy of all places) late in 2003 and needed to be seeing patients clinically to ‘keep his eye in’ and so started the practice with that in mind.
“I didn’t have great ambitions for KVSSP at that time” says Greg. “I had a skiing bug that I had to get out of my system which is why we moved to Mount Beauty. We had

had a meeting with Drs Mark Robinson and Mark Zagorski a couple of months earlier and they were very supportive of our plans to open a practice here. With my post grad exams looming and support from MBMC it made sense to start a part-time practice while I was training and studying but I had some doubts about how it would all work out. I figured we would give it a couple of years then probably move back to Melbourne.

“In August 2004, our current premises became available and we made the move which raised our profile and it was becoming evident by then that KVSSP might survive. We developed good relationships with a number of local businesses, the Alpine Shire and Alpine Health and things snowballed from there.
In 2008, Fiona formally joined the practice and started our Clinical Pilates program which exploded out of the gate and we had a waiting list that took five years to get through. More recently, the PACE program in partnership with Alpine Health has been a great success and has filled a great need for the local community.

“Without a doubt, we’ve been lucky. We have frequently been in the right place at the right time when various programs and opportunities have come up. We’ve had great support from the Mount Beauty Medical Centre which has helped us ride out the inevitable ups and downs of our type of business. Most of all, we chose the right town to come to. The upper Kiewa Valley has an active and motivated community and our approach which aims to promote independence and give patients control over their injuries seems to resonate. We are very grateful to the people of our community who have supported us for the last 20 years.”
Congratulations to Fiona and Greg for establishing a very important business in our town which is serving the community well and we look forward to another 20 years of great service. Ed. •

Mount Beauty Dragon Boat Club and West Peak Hotel will be hosting the inaugural Mount Beauty Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday 4th March, 2023 from 9am – 12:30pm. Presentations will be at West Peak Hotel from 1:30pm. This will be the first time such an event has been staged on the magnificent Mount Beauty Pondage – the most beautiful paddling venue in regional Victoria. Our event is proudly supported the Alpine shire and AGL.
Crews from across regional Victoria will be competing over three racing categories that will test teams’ endurance, speed and out right strength. Racing will include:
• 1.4km time trial around the lake –Endurance.
• A 100m splash and dash sprint – Speed.
• A team tug of war – Strength. Points accumulated from the results from each category will determine the outright winner of the Mount Beauty Dragon Boat Festival perpetual trophy. Featured teams include Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club, Mount Beauty Dragon Boat Club, Beechworth Golden Serpents Dragon Boat Club and the Victorian State Junior Dragon Boat racing team. The State Junior team are racing as part of their preparation for the upcoming Australian Dragon Boat championships which will be held in April at Gateway Lakes Albury Wodonga.
Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing paddle sports in Australia.
Suitable for all ages – juniors can start dragon boating at 10 and stay in the sport throughout their lives. Dragon boat racing events are held all over Australia (and the

world), allowing participants to race in a huge variety of event types, from Dragon Boat Victoria Lunar New Year regatta, to the 50km Ord River Marathon in the Kimberly, and the wonderful Vogalonga festival in Venice Italy. Did you know that some of our own Mount Beauty Dragon Boat paddlers have raced internationally in festivals in China, at Club Crew World Championships in Hungary, and represented Australia at the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships?
What you will see on the day?
Visitors will see the Mount Beauty Pondage come alive with colourful marquees filled with paddlers from a variety of teams, preparing to race. The dragon boats will be fully dressed with their heads and tails glittering. There will also be a traditional Chinese dragon dance in between the racing program at 11.30am to entertain visitors and inspire the paddlers. The volunteers will direct you to parking and

facilities near the football ground, and then a short stroll through the playground will bring you to the event. A commemorative T-Shirt will be on sale. Bring a camp chair and picnic rug, and enjoy a morning of racing. An after-party following the event will be hosted by West Peak Hotel, where the presentation of trophies will be held. Endurance, Speed and Strength – who will be the Mount Beauty Dragon Boat Festival Champion. Let the racing begin! •

Simon Goss has been part of every Conquestathon since inception. Warren ‘Sheepy’ Sanders is part of the team that have taken over the organising of the event for now and in to the future.
Sheepy put some questions to Simon as part of the promotion of this year’s event.
Gossy: I grew up in Mount Beauty, started school in 1968, and finished High School in 1980 when I moved to Melbourne for work and further education. My family was active and I spent a lot of my early/teen age years

MTB de femme, 2023 is coming to Big Hill MTB Park, Mt Beauty for this year only.
The event is all about women riding the mountain bike trails in a friendly, fun, relaxing and safe environment.
You will meet like-minded tiders become a confident rider and have a heap of fun in the process.

cross country skiing and racing in numerous events including State and National titles. I was a member of many sporting clubs and competed in sports like swimming, football, cricket, tennis, golf, orienteering, triathlons, skiing and so much more. Mount Beauty was great for a kid wanting to do outdoor activities and sports. Only now do I realise how lucky I was.
These days I am busy - with not only work, but also running a farm, with my wife in Central Victoria. The last couple of years have curtailed almost all activities, with COVID around - but I still go to the Conquestathon - even when it wasn’t officially on! If there is one event to be part of in the year - then this is it!
Sheepy: What was the first year you entered the Conquestathon and what are your memories of the day?
Gossy: 1974 was the first year. There were 68 contestants, mostly locals. I was only 10 and until then and for some reason I assumed there really was a ‘staircase,’ then I climbed
and found out what it really meant! I walked with my brother and some school friends as my mother wanted to make sure someone was with me, I still remember walking back along the road towards the finish line quite chuffed that I had made it.
Sheepy: To our knowledge you are the only person who has completed them all. Was there a time when you decided ‘I am going to keep doing it every year, until I physically cannot’?
Gossy: Yes, I am the only person to complete all of the Conquestathons. In the first year there were only 68 contestants and I knew almost all of them, so there are not many that would have 30 year medals. There is a few that might have more, but not many. I cannot remember when I decided to keep going, “for as long as I can” but it has always been my intention to continue doing the climb, until I can’t. There are several reasons for this.
Sheepy: Is there a standout year/ Conquestathon you completed and if so, what made it special?
Gossy: There are several years that standout for different reasons and some just for the contrast. I remember about 40 years ago (can’t remember the exact year) it was decided to have an ‘official’ mail box on the summit so you could send a letter/postcard, from the top of Mt Bogong. The day was so cold and wet that the mail box had to be bought to the tree line, as there were howling winds up to 100km’s and snow. A real contrast to latter years, with things like the cancellation of the ‘83 event, due to it being too hot and a total fire ban day. It was only about two weeks before; we had Ash Wednesday fires. But, I still climbed!
Sheepy: Do you think the record time of 1hr 51 minutes will ever be broken?
About the role:
As the Maintenance Planner for the hydro assets you will be responsible for delivering and optimising maintenance planning in line with AGL planning standards to ensure that work orders are planned in a timely manner and ready to execute. You will be responsible for the procurement of materials, resources and services in addition to planning and scheduling of internal/ external resources in conjunction with Maintenance Teams to complete maintenance and project work. You will also and maintain the CMMS (SAP) through master data inclusions, amendments and deletion.

You will be based at Mt. Beauty which offers access to outstanding winter and summer sports such as skiing and mountain biking along with quality educational and health infrastructure. The region surrounded by the picturesque Alpine National Park offers a lifestyle that is appealing to both individuals and families.
About You:
You will be an experienced heavy industry Maintenance Planner with a sound knowledge of SAP, outstanding attention to detail and lateral thinking skills. Your experience working on outage, planned maintenance and forced maintenance within a heavy industrial environment will set you up for success. What you bring to the table:
• Trade or Engineering qualifications in Mechanical, Electrical or a similar discipline
• Previous experience in planning and scheduling heavy industrial maintenance
• Significant experience using CMMS (SAP) systems
• Advanced communication, interpersonal and influencing skills
• The ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders
Applications close: Monday, 6 March 2023. To apply visit
Gossy: Everything is made to be broken, but this time will be extremely hard to beat. I guess one day, but it won’t be me!
Sheepy: There are so many events on these days. Ultramarathons, trail runs, adventure races etc. what makes the Conquestathon appealing?
Gossy: There are several reasons for me. First of all this is the highest mountain in Victoria, so it is something to Conquer and be proud you did it. It’s not easy, it is a challenge and you get a good feeling knowing you ‘conquered’ it. This event is great for everyone, with a general fitness level. So it can be an event for all walks of life, fast and slow, old and young.
It can be a race for those who want to compete. It can be a wonderful walk in the Australian alps/high country for those who want to go slow.
It has some amazing views you just don’t get anywhere. You smell the trees and flora and you get to see the changing environment as you move higher up in altitude.
For me, the Conquestathon says ‘Family…’ sure you can do this as a family, and that does make it reasonably unique for a sporting event, but this is almost like a family Xmas for me. It’s always hard to get a whole family together at Christmas time. We grow up and have our own families and then quite often have other places we need to be, or on holidays away etc. For me, this is the time of the year that I always went home to
see my parents when I was younger (after I left home) and this event would always make sure I go for a ‘walk in the Australian bush’ and see my parents. Two really important things to do and what a great reason to remind you to go do them.
Now with five of my own grown up children and their partners (and now even grandchildren), we get together and do the Conquestathon each year. Not all family members go up the mountain every year, but all have and most go up every year.
Some run, some walk. Some compete against each other and some against their own PB. That’s what is great about it, it’s up to you, as to what the event means to you.
Even when the event was not organised (Covid) my wife, my children and their partners etc, all still went to Mount Beauty and climbed the mountain. In years gone past when the event was cancelled, I still go.

This year is my 49th year in a row, climbing the mountain, but 43rd officially.
This really is a great event and now in its 43rd official year – it’s an institution!

Sheepy: Seems like plenty of reasons to enter and not many excuses left not to give it go - especially with a marshalled course.
Entry is still possible in person between 6am and 6.40am at Mountain Creek Campground tomorrow morning (Saturday 4th). Individuals $40 and Families $100. •

Leigh Botfield started Physie at the age of nine and has been teaching and competing for the past 30 years, running a successful APDA Club in Tamworth including having students place in the Top of their Age Groups at both Junior and Senior National level throughout the years.
After moving to Mount Beauty in March 2022 to work at Falls Creek, Leigh continued to teach remotely for ADT in Tamworth and at the start of 2023 is continuing her love of Physie and teaching with the commencement of classes in Mount Beauty and is excited to be bringing APDA (Australian Physie and Dance Association) Physie and Dance to Victoria and the Kiewa Valley we will be the first APDA in Victoria
APDA Physie is a fusion of fundamental physie and the art of dance. Physie is a
sport for all ages and abilities, from Tiny Tots through to Ladies in their 80's who are still enjoying the fun and friendship that attending classes brings.
Whilst Physie has always been predominantly a girls sport, more boys are starting to join and enjoy physie classes along with their sisters, mothers and friends with APDA encouraging an all-inclusive environment.
Throughout the year, members all over Australia learn four to six choreographed routines. Each routine has its specific skill set and focuses on movement, musicality, technique, performance, flexibility, cardio and strength – all in one class! – and caters to beginners through to Open Elite.
Physie includes elements of Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary, Pilates and Modern Dance. For beginners wanting to join, no experience is necessary at all. Physie is also a great option for those wanting to return to dance for recreation.
All members are encouraged to attend Interclub, Zone and National Competitions but these are not compulsory at all and we give all students the choice as to whether

Providing enjoyment for all ages, this is an opportunity not to miss. Pic – Courtesy APDA
they wish to compete or not. By the end of the year, as confidence builds most members are keen to compete to show off their improvement and hard work.

We want it to be a fun, family day that showcases local, practical approaches to strengthening community resilience when faced with emergencies.
It would be very helpful if you could provide suggestions for displays or presentations you consider to be appropriate on the day and to get the public involved. CRAG/KCC will promote the planned activities to stimulate community interest.
Previously there has been a fire table display by FFMV (Forest Fire Management Victoria) and DEECA (Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action);

Recently, the UKV Uniting Church Op Shop in Mount Beauty donated funds for the purchase of 20 small kick boards for swimming lessons at Mount Beauty Pool. Another donor has provided a dozen new pool noodles.
Beth Smith, secretary of the Op Shop, said the committee was pleased to be able to support local children learning to swim. In an area where we have so many rivers, creeks, dams and lakes, it is important that all children become confident and competent swimmers and have a range of safety and survival water skills.
