The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
s a result of situations in previous summers, during the busy Christmas and Easter periods, Falls Creek village was advised by the CFA and Victoria Police that there were problems with too many vehicles in the village.
vehicles’ to the biggest problem - the inability of our major fire-fighting appliance- the tracked vehicle ‘pumper’ –not being able to get to a fire!
The irony is that while we have promoted the village for summer trade – and this summer trade is growing – it produces its own set of different circumstances. As a snow resort, the concept of the ski through village is part of the resort’s attractiveness and visitor parking has always been accepted as ‘in the carparks and down along the road!’
The rise in summer trade – and the fact there is no snow on the village roads has meant the visitors, as well as staff and residents could always drive into the village. But, experience has shown that during the busy times the number of vehicles in the village creates problems.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
From the simple ‘blocking in of other

The ‘Pumper’ (its colloquial name) is a track vehicle designed to be used during snow season as well as during the rest of the year. It is capable of pushing water up to a height of four or five floors – very necessary in a resort on the side of a hill. It is also a little bit wider than your average ‘fire truck’ and the tracks make it slightly less manoeuvrable than a normal vehicle of this size.
God forbid – should a fire start anywhere in the village and the ‘pumper’ not be able to reach the site, one does not need a lot of imagination to know that it would be ‘good night nurse’ for pretty well the whole village …and it’s too late afterwards!
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig
On the positive side, feedback from the community (residents and visitors alike) has been extremely positive. We are a family resort and the lack of vehicles in the village has produced a nicer ambience – with folk

The ‘Pumper’ - a vital piece of equipment for our resort – and it must be able to get around the village – because if we have a fire – and it can’t get through!!! Think
happy to wander most places, kids playing in the streets and enjoying riding their bicycles and scooters around the village.
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!
Add to this the mountain bike fraternitytaking advantage of our fabulous new trails. One of the secrets to the success of our mountain biking program development is that the majority of the trails all hook up with the village. You can start from the village and return to the village by any number of routes – and a quick pedal through uncluttered streets is so much better for everyone.

Alpine Summers Exhibition
A very special exhibition will be on show this Easter at Falls Creek – Alpine Summers, featuring the work of a group of artists from the Great Alpine Gallery

in Swifts Creek, created in response to the breathtaking Falls Creek environment.
As guests of the Falls Creek Alpine Resort’s Artist-in-Residence Program, the artists spent a number of weeks over the past two summers roaming the high plains and creating work in oil paints, pastels, photography, printmaking and basketry. They also shared their skills with the local community in a series of drawing and printmaking workshops.
The unique and precious alpine environment was a constant source of delight and discovery for the artists. Their work explores the presence of the monolithic mountains, sweeping vistas and drop-offs in varying light and weather, detailed studies of the minutiae of the moss beds, the profusion of life in the alpine herb fields, the chain of ponds at Pretty Valley, and the sensuous forms of the ancient snow gums.
The exhibition will show the work of Deirdre Jack, Penny Carruthers, Anne Richardson, Tiffany Forster, Tracey Johnson, Lynn Lochrie and Ann Bingham.

The works will be on show at the Falls Creek Board Room, Slalom Plaza, (above Foodworks) Friday 19 April - Monday 22 April, 10am-4pm.

1. Buy Economical Tyres. It’s tempting to go cheap, but that can prove to be a mistake. Tests show they often increase stopping distance, have a negative effect on handling. They may also hit your fuel economy and need replacing more often.
2. Drive gently when the car is cold. Cars are at their least efficient when they are cold. If you drive hard straight from start-up, you are redoubling the wasted fuel, and also wearing out the engine more quickly in the process.
3. Empty your boot. Don’t carry unnecessary weight around with you. On average, every 50kg will increase your fuel consumption by 2%.

Making music can sometimes feel like you’re drifting on the ocean, waiting for inspiration to appear like shore on the horizon. For Australian singer-songwriter Andrew Swift, the sea was the Melbourne music scene.

LThe leaves are starting to turn. The air is clear and sweet – with just a hint of coolness. And yes, we are on our way to another of our beautiful winters. But, we still have Easter, the annual Mount Beauty Music Festival and the rest of Autumn to enjoy – and so we shall!
ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?
Knowledge is the key to your enjoyment, and if it ain’t in this paper, the answers will be at the Mount Beauty Visitor Information Centre, Bogong High Plains Road, Mount Beauty. Open 9am – 5pm daily, including Good Friday. Ph: 03 5755 0596.

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.
MR: How many national events have you raced?
On Easter Saturday morning until around 2pm, the Mount Beauty Community Market will be held around Kiewa Crescent and at the top end of Hollonds Street. This market features lots of locally made and grown produce, plants, wood raffles and lots more. For further information or to book a site, phone 0419 289 672. •
Creative Workshops
Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
This Art group meets every Thursday to paint, draw, mould, carve or indeed engage in any form of Art that members of this friendly group become inclined to put their hand and minds to.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.
MR: How did you get into riding?
Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

Each Easter the group of around 36 artists hold their annual art show, and this year it looks like being the biggest Art Show ever held in Mount Beauty. With 250 works to be exhibited, there is certainly going to be some organising behind the scenes. Many of the artists are known to the community and all live locally - in and around Mount Beauty and surrounding areas. Their work is enjoyable and to be appreciated. If you would like to show your appreciation, or simply enjoy some wonderful art, make a point of visiting the show at the Mount Beauty Community Centre, top end of Hollonds Street, each day of Easter, from 10am to 4pm. •

Soap Making. Sunday 21st April. 12:30pm – 3:30pm. Ages: 16yrs+. Cost: $85.
Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.
MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer?
LBen: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side.

the Mount Beauty Op Shop is the place to go. Operated by a group of enthusiastic volunteers the Op Shop provides a great service to tourists and locals alike. Not everyone is aware that donated items from the community are diverted into several channels. The higher quality items appear on the racks and shelves for sale to the public at bargain prices, whilst the rest is sent onto other charities or businesses. In 2018 over a tonne of clean cotton items were sold to Jacks Rags, and this year we will beat that mark. This is a great recycling service for items that are not saleable. We collect and distribute to disaster relief, animal refuge, family services, the homeless; and to local people who request help for worthy causes - a win, win situation! With the weather change we begin to think about all the great things we can do in the snow, and about checking our last year’s ski gear. The Op Shop has a massive Ski Clothing sale happening again this year beginning on Easter Saturday. We are selling good quality second hand jackets, pants, après boots, goggles, helmets, hats, gloves, mittens and incidentals for both adults and children. A few high quality items have marked prices, but most are under $20.

Glorious Gliding
Approximately 10 or 15 extra soaring aircraft will be visiting Mount Beauty for Easter with several coming from the Melbourne Gliding club. The popularity of this area for flying is borne out by the fact that pilots, their families and their aircraft are coming from places like Melbourne, Temora and Sydney.
With the weather forecast to continue in the same warm vein, the gliding should be extremely good. If you fancy a breathtaking experience and exotic views over the valley, call down to the airfield and book a trial introductory flight. For further details, call Peter Deane 0418 591 351 or Bernie O'Donnell 0431 529 633. •

Again this year, Mount Beauty Car Club is hosting its’ major two day race meeting on Easter Saturday and Sunday.
Cars are coming from as far as Swan Hill and Ballarat to compete, with racing starting from 11:30 am on both days.
One of the feature events is the $1,000 Dash for Cash. This sudden death shootout sees cars competing in two lap sprints; with the winner proceeding to take on the next challenger. This event is always a real crowd pleaser and for this meeting it is planned to be held as the last event on the Saturday so the cars (and their drivers) have a chance to recover for the finals on Sunday afternoon.
If you are interested in helping as a volunteer at the Club please either contact

us on Facebook or come to one of our meetings at the Dederang Hotel on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm. •
Yet another well-loved popular past-time. Kath and Steve Baird, now with sons, Lin and Clay, have garnered many years of knowledge providing horse riding experiences for thousands of visitors from all round the world. The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes – and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.
ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.
