hey don’t wear capes, bat suits, their underwear on the outside or work for Marvel or DC… because the Falls Creek Ski Patrol don’t need gimmicks. They are the real deal (and they’ll tell you, it’s the best job in the world).
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
Snowsports, no matter what the discipline - be it: skiing, snowboarding, cross country, snow shoeing, back country touring etc, all are an amazing way to enjoy the great outdoors. However, occasionally you may need the assistance of the men and women in black and red.
Aside from the many other roles they perform, it’s also what you don’t see and what they do when you’re still asleep that is just as important and vital to ensuring your safety when on the mountain.
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
Falls Creek is extremely fortunate to have a dedicated and highly experienced core team of patrollers, many of whom have

a long association with Falls Creek and a tremendous knowledge of not just the resort, but the high plains that surrounds it. The team are regularly called upon by emergency services to assist in search and rescue call outs, not just for their manpower, but because of their unmatched expertise and intimate knowledge of the terrain in resort and across the expanse of mountain ranges that surround us.
The teams’ expertise, gained from years of experience, also benefits the volunteer program, where aspiring crew learn the essentials, hoping to eventually meet the stringent requirements to attain professional accreditation.
Contributing to the teams’ broad experience has been an active exchange program with resorts across the world – USA, Canada, Italy, and Japan. Due to COVID-19, this year’s program has been suspended. Whilst the general job description is the same, the experiences aren’t. Terrain, the broad scale topography, and snowpack vary markedly in all resorts, presenting opportunities to learn new
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

skills. Whilst the Australian patrol team members are highly regarded for their intense training and qualifications regime and being much more hands on in terms of patient care and first responder aid, in many other jurisdictions, because of the terrain, ski patrol are much more concerned with avalanche control and extreme terrain management, obviously not something very common in our resorts!
In Falls Creek, the resort forms part of the Alpine National Park, as such is accessible to the public 365 days of the year. Which means, in winter, lifts don’t need to be turning for the team to be out ensuring the in-bounds terrain is safe. There are 450ha of lift accessible terrain, but over 1500ha of total terrain within the resort boundary. This is why, whilst in ‘lockdown’, as observed by all those skiers “earning their turns” patrol continued to monitor and maintain runs to ensure the safety of all who used the resort for their two hours of exercise. As you can imagine, without lifts turning, the challenge of securing run safety is made much greater, hence patrollers
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

utilise snowmobiles, often towing teams to parts of the resort that would normally be serviceable by using first lifts. With every snowmobile tagged with GPS modules, resort management can monitor, in real time, where ski patrol is and how much terrain has been checked. It’s the same technology we use for the XC groomer that enables us to know how much terrain has been groomed and when (check it out here: https://www.fallscreek.com.au/snowreport).
It is also an OH&S tool too, in the event of a mishap or equipment failure, particularly for the grooming team, who every night are well outside the resort boundary, ensuring the 65kms of XC trail are attended to.
In any event, hopefully, you’ll never need the patrollers, but when you do…they’ll be there.
Remember too…patrol can not only patch you up and transport you to the Falls Creek Medical Centre (stacked with expert awardwinning doctors), but patrol may cancel your pass… so be safe out there… Respect gets respect - from the lift line, to the slopes, through the park and in resort.

Food Stands – Munchski’s (Slalom Plaza), Easy Eats (Village Bowl), Snonuts (Slalom Plaza), Jerry’s Stall (Parallel Street)… these little pop-ups provide the resort with quick, accessible and delicious food options. Each stall is different, they offer a deliberately varied menu to provide ‘options’ to guests who just want ‘fast food’, so they can satisfy their hunger and then get back out on the slopes as quickly as possible. Don’t just try one, try them all.

A REASON TO CELEBRATE
The 2021 Hoppet Dozen
The Hoppet Dozen, available only from the Kangaroo Hoppet Race Office in Mount Beauty provides a unique chance to sample wines from four of our local wineries. Spare a thought for the two hard working members of the Hoppet committee charged with selecting the Hoppet Dozen. The first part is easy, Ceccanti Kiewa Valley Wines is just a few km down the road in the Kiewa Valley, but they then have to cross the Tawonga Gap into the Ovens and King Valleys to check out what is on offer at Feathertop Wines just outside Porepunkah, and then further down the Ovens Valley through Myrtleford to Gapsted Wines and finally that long drive down the Snow Road to Oxley to finish up at Sam Miranda Wines for lunch. Fortunately they take along a trusty designated driver to get them back home after a hard day’s tasting.
A quick glance the list selected for this year’s selection throws up a few names that need a bit of an explanation – Rosso, Rosato and Prosato from Sam Miranda Wines at Oxley. The Rosso is easy – rosso is Italian for red. The Rosato is a dry rosé style wine with a name made up to go with Sam’s Rosso (red) and Bianco (white) wines from the Ballerina range with their distinctive ballet dancer label. Which leads us on to the Prosato. With the King Valley famous for its Prosecco, and dry rosé wines increasingly in popularity, why not combine them to produce a dry sparkling rosé wine.

The Kangaroo Hoppet Planning Committee met earlier this week and made the decision not to proceed with the on-snow event on 28th August this year.

‘The combination of international and interstate travel bans with the uncertainty around the level of Victorian COVID-19 restrictions that would apply over the next fortnight meant that we felt that we were unable to offer a safe event for our participants and volunteers in the alpine environment,” said Race Director Ben Derrick. “Not to overlook providing a high quality event and the limits on participant numbers for events such as ours.” (Tough call but definitely the right one. Ed).
With the virtual event already on offer for those unable to get to Falls Creek organisers are planning to offer an 'open track' style event from Monday 23rd to Saturday 28th August for skiers that can make it up to Falls during Hoppet Week. With support from Parks Victoria and Falls Creek Resort Management our volunteers will be putting out course signage and km markers and setting up a few bells and whistles in the Nordic Bowl to give skiers a sense of
involvement. Skiers will be able to come and go as they please and take a selfie on the traditional Hoppet podium.
The Organising Committee are keen to provide some normal Hoppet social activities even with the event not going ahead. The Hoppet shop will be open daily during Hoppet week from 2pm-4pm with the usual array of memorabilia and merchandise. Of particular note is the great Hoppet Dozen from local vineyards in our valleys. The perfect companion for any meal or any occasion. Also, the collector's item Hoppet 30th year anniversary t-shirts when it's not actually going to be the 30th year celebration. Who knows, they might be as tantalizingly popular as an upside-down penny terrible for a philatelist… unlikely, but in a couple of great colours they are sure to stand out!

It is with great disappointment that we announce that the 2021 Ski de Femme, hosted by the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, will not be running this weekend. Unfortunately, due to the current COVID restrictions, the club is unable to hold the event. We are all looking forward to seeing all of the ladies out skiing in 2022.

Trail Conditions:
It’s been a bit of a whirlwind week of weather, lockdowns and all of the rest. While some rain and warmer weather has transformed the fresh snow from earlier in the week into our typical Australian conditions, there is full coverage across all XC trails. With the reopening of Regional Victoria, grooming operations are full steam ahead and Heathy Spur, Langford’s Gap and Sun Valley trails are now open. Get out and enjoy! Oh, and don’t forget to get those Hoppet training km’s in – to do it your way at our place!
Meet the National Team:
This week we caught up with Mark Pollock. Mark is one of the longest serving members of the current National Team, with a résumé that extends across 10 years. When out of the green lycra, you may also recognise Mark as the breakfast chief extraordinaire from Howman’s Gap.
1. When did you start xc skiing, how did you get involved?
Mark: I have been skiing since I was around 2yrs old. As members of the Wangaratta Ski Club (Mt Hotham), my parents regularly skied cross country.
2. What is your favourite XC event or place to race?
Mark: My favourite event is the 15km skate. I really enjoying racing in Falun, Sweden. I have had the opportunity to race there a number of times, including the 2015 World Championships and last northern winter on the World Cup Circuit.
3. Where is your favourite place to ski at Falls Creek?
Mark: It’s hard to beat crust cruising out towards Hotham.
4. What is your go-to training snack when on the trails?
Mark: Muesli bar or baby food squeezy thing.
5. What do you do when you’re not skiing?
Mark: During the winter I work at Howman’s Gap. Throughout the rest of year, I am an engineer/computer scientist for a solar company. I tend to do a lot of IT support.
6. Did you pick up any new hobbies/skills during lockdown?
Mark: Luckily, I’ve been in the country’s COVID free oasis (AKA: Canberra) for most of my time in Australia. As such, I haven’t had many lockdowns.
7. What are your goals for the up and coming race season?
Mark: I am currently aiming to qualify for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, which will be held in February next year.
8. If you could ski anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Mark: Skiing a sick line down Everest.
9. Three things you pack in your bag on race day?
Mark: Spare socks, emergency snacks, and visor (you never know when it might start raining/snowing) [Take a leaf from Mark’s book. Visors are available at Windy Corner].
10. If you weren’t a skier what sport would you do?

CONCUSSION
Being Aware!
While we’re all adjusting to the stop/start snow season that we’ve been presented with, it’s worth remembering that there are many sports that kids and adults alike participate in that can lead to a head injury and concussion.
If you search Snow Australia’s website for concussion, you’ll find the following statement (amongst lots of other details). “All concussions are serious and may be caused by a direct blow to the head, face or neck, or by impact elsewhere on the body, with force transmitted to the head. It is a brain injury that can occur without a loss of consciousness that causes a disturbances of brain function with resolutions usually proceeding smoothly over days to weeks, but in some cases, symptoms are prolonged,” coupled with the handy hint to “Remember: If in doubt, sit them out.”

“There has been growing concern in Australia and internationally about the incidence of sport-related concussion and potential health ramifications for athletes. Concussion affects athletes at all levels of sport, from the part-time recreational athlete to the full-time professional. If managed appropriately most symptoms and signs of concussion resolve spontaneously. Complications can occur, however, including prolonged duration of symptoms and increased susceptibility to further injury. There is also growing concern about potential long-term consequences of multiple concussions. Over recent years there has been elevated public awareness of sport-related concussion and increased focus on the importance of diagnosing and managing the condition promptly, safely and appropriately.
The residents of, and visitors to, Falls Creek are a pretty active lot irrelevant of the season. Mountain biking, ultra-running, normal running, hiking, swimming, walking and road riding are all pretty standard outdoor activities at Falls in the green season. Throw in gymnastics, trampolining, circuit training, martial arts, footy, cricket, basketball, netball, roller blading and roller skiing as a starting
point and we have a fair number of sports where concussive injuries are reasonably common in addition to our skiing and snowboarding.
The Concussion in Sport Australia Positioning Statement tells us that recognising concussion can be difficult. “The symptoms and signs are variable, non-specific and may be subtle. Onlookers should suspect concussion when an injury results in a knock to the head or body that transmits a force to the head. A hard knock is not required, concussion can occur from minor knocks.
There may be obvious signs of concussion such as loss of consciousness, brief convulsions or difficulty balancing or walking. However, the signs of concussion can be more subtle.”
“The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT5) identifies 22 possible symptoms: headache, ‘don’t feel right,’ ‘pressure in the head,’ difficulty concentrating, neck pain, difficulty remembering, nausea or vomiting, fatigue or low energy, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision, drowsiness, balance problems, sensitivity to light, more emotional, sensitivity to noise, irritability, feeling slowed down, sadness, feeling like ‘in a fog,’ nervous or anxious, trouble falling asleep.”
One of the things that I love about Falls Creek is freedom many parents give their kids to roam around and play outdoors, reasonably free from the constraints of traffic, and other factors that parent’s worry about in more built-up metropolitan areas.
A friend jokes that it’s like going back in time to the 1960s and 70s, when kids were pushed outdoors and given a simple set of instructions to not get in trouble and be back in time for meals or when it got dark. However, with freedom comes risk taking. While tasking risks is an important part of children learning to understand boundaries and limitations as they grown up, it can also lead to injuries and consequently the need for recovery.
A consistent and growing body of evidence supports a slower rate of recovery in children and adolescents aged 18 and under. Given a more conservative approach to concussion is recommended the return to learning should take priority over a return to sporting activities. When parents send their children back to school, teachers and parents may need to include more regular breaks, rests and increased time to complete tasks into their child’s daily routines. Additionally, a child’s return to any sport program should be extended so that the child does not return to contact/ collision activities less than 14 days from the resolution of all concussive symptoms. While we’re all adjusting to the ongoing constraints of COVID-19, it’s important to keep in mind that you don’t have to hit your head hard to be concussed. So, please be safe out there people, no matter what you’re sport you’re participating in. You only get one set of brain cells to operate your body with. And they are precious. •

Celebrates Twenty Years
The years 2020 and 2021 have been somewhat traumatic for the majority of the community, both here and around the world. Fortunately there have been quite a few positives (like the success of the virtual Kangaroo Hoppet) that have kept us all going.
Then we can add in a few milestone events that should be recognised and celebrated as appropriate. One of these is the 20th Anniversary of Kim McDonald establishing Alpine Valley Real Estate in Mount Beauty.
Since opening in 2001, the journey can best be described as “a roller-coaster ride” with all of the ups and downs that make the business interesting and rewarding – with 20 years of opportunities and challenges in every aspect of the real estate market.
The business has witnessed the highs and lows of property in the local area and the fluctuations Australia-wide. Kim and here team have also had to adapt to the sweeping changes in legislation, the advances in technology and the way things are done.
They have also watched this beautiful area advance and evolve and have welcomed
many new residents to the area – happily handing them the keys to their new home.
What hasn’t changed over the past two decades is the commitment the business has to the clients – to provide a positive real estate experience for the client based on the 25 years of experience Kim has gained in the industry.
It was 20 year ago that Kim took the big step to follow her heart and to be her own boss in an industry that she is passionate about. After 25 years in real estate she still loves coming to work.
As the team, Brendan, Mark and Kim celebrate and reflect on the 20th anniversary, they would like to express the deepest gratitude to all of the clients, customers and trades people that have made the 20 years in business possible and enjoyable. Thank you all!
