AMountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
s we head into week three of the 2021 snow season and prepare to welcome school holiday travellers from all over Australia, let me just say, “Welcome!” It’s great to have you back with us at Australia’s premier all seasons resort. Now, it’s still very early in the season and natural snowfall is fickle at this time of year, but this doesn’t stop the banter and guestimates about what’s in store for the season and how much snow we will receive and when.
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
The lengths people go to - the myths, the folklore, the legends and recanting of seasons past, comparisons to the Northern hemisphere winter just gone, or the outlooks from the Frog or the Grasshopper, or just the outright furphy’s told (and drunk) at the bars… all get bandied around at this time of year.
Resort Entry Permits
Facts, well they pretty much get ignored, as they tend to get in the way of a good story. This is why the snowfall reporting is left to the venerable Falls Creek Ski Patrol crew. No spin, no stretching the truth, just the facts based on observations at staked locations across the resort and in the village.
Every morning the Ski Patrols early crew (5:45am) steadfastly make observations and record these. These records stretch back decades and supplement those of the old State Electricity Commission, which go all the way back to 1934 (see the original old charts at the Falls Creek Museum (https:// www.fallscreekmuseum.com.au/) – kindly donated by the Spargo family).
Unlike some mountains, Falls Creek is blessed with an abundance of water, with the largest and highest water resource in Australia. Rocky Valley is a 28,000 megalitre dam (though we like to call it a lake for marketing purposes), established as part of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. This asset along with the investment by Falls Creek Ski Lifts into snow making ensures the
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

resort can make snow when Ullr doesn’t. Falls Creek has 110 hectares of snowmaking infrastructure with ample capacity to cover a quarter of the lift accessed skiing terrain. Noting conditions however, i.e. temperature and humidity, aka wet bulb temps need to cooperate for best results and coverage across all areas. The microclimate within the resort can be quite extreme, with minor variations enough to thwart even the best efforts of the team as they chase the elusive perfect conditions.
As at the time of writing, it is 50/50 with respect to both natural snow falling and conditions being ripe to make snow for the upcoming school holiday period. The outlook suggests pre-frozen snow might fall first, followed by proper flakes to freshen the mountain up.
With this uncertainty, we too have checked up on the status of the giant spider crabs in Port Philip Bay, and they have reportedly left, so this augurs well for snow fall in the near future!
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

My Boots Are Too Big
They say you shouldn’t try so hard to fit in, but with ski boots it can be worth the effort to get them to fit right. It sounds like a ruse, but boots that are too big can lead to more pain in the foot muscles and toes than one that are too tight.
Too big means a size or more too big. This may only be 10mm too big, but it can make a huge difference, given that ski boots are fitted by the millimetre.
People mostly end up in boots that are too large because they have one issue that is difficult to accommodate in the right size, so they’re just shoved into a bucket – it’s the easy way out. Their issue might be a high and bony instep, bunions or big calves.
One of the noticeable signs that a boot is too big is when the skier is able to stand straight up in their boot. Rolling the whole foot around inside the boot is another really clear sign, as is sliding around in the boot and excessive moving at the top of the boot.
A sneakier sign that a boot is too big is when the ankles hurt. This isn’t necessarily from too much constant pressure on the ankle bones, it’s often from the ankle moving around too much in the heel pockets and banging the bones on the side of the boot. It can feel like someone’s taken a hammer to your ankle after a day of sliding.
The same can happen with sore toes – the foot sliding back and forth can cause bruised toes and lost nails all because the foot is hitting the end.
But one of the most painful signs of a boot that’s too big is pain at the top of the shins. Banging back and forth every time you lean forward to start a turn. Shin bang baby, it will stop you in your carving tracks.
Technique issues that arise from a boot that’s too big can be seen in A-framing (where the knees almost touch when
turning), leaning back and difficulty getting clean edges.
Going up a size can be seen as an easy fix to accommodate a difficult or problematic foot and take the “fit it in” approach rather than actually fitting the boot correctly. This leaves the rest of the boot being too big and the above issues ensue. Quite often these big boots are difficult, if not impossible, to modify enough to make the skier comfortable.
Avoiding ending up in the wrong size is as easy as having a full biomechanical assessment done before buying a new boot. This captures any issues and allows for a plan to be made to accommodate issues and the correct boot chosen from the beginning. The correct boot is one which will allow the right modifications to be made.
So next time you’re going skiing, if you’re swimming in your boots, just remember that a bucket is not the answer.

Junior Birkie Program
Aconversation between Tim Retchford (past National team member) and Kate Duggan was the catalyst for the Birkie Junior Ski Team to be resurrected. Kate’s son Beau has a desire to be an elite cross-country skier but after leaving primary school at Falls Creek did not have a clear pathway to achieve this goal. Tim recognised the fun and development that he had as a young skier training in junior teams. He also has a young son keen on improving his skills in cross country skiing. The idea of forming a junior training group was born and quickly turned into reality with the strong local support of Paul Gray (two time Winter Olympian and key driver to the formation of the team), Esther Bottomly (three time Winter Olympian) and her husband Valerio Leccardi (Current National team coach, Olympian and five time Kangaroo Hoppet winner).
The purpose of the 2021 Birkie Junior Ski Team is to assist intermediate to advanced junior skiers (grade 4 to Year 12) in learning more about cross country ski training and racing. The hope is that some team members will be able to compete in 2021 junior XC ski race competitions, such as Interschools
and State and National-level races (and who knows even the Olympics down the track) but more importantly that they have fun; challenging themselves with their friends.
The response to the program has been much greater than anticipated. Twenty-four athletes have registered from Falls Creek Primary School, Tawonga Primary School, Mount Beauty Primary School, Mount Beauty Secondary Collage and Bright P12 Secondary College.
Training sessions started in term two with a weekly session after school on Mondays at the Mount Beauty SC. The focus of the sessions has been skills development
on roller skis. Although many of the participants hadn’t roller skied before, they picked it up incredibly quickly showing amazing skill, determination and enthusiasm. Activities have included agility courses, specific technique development, relays and ball games on roller skis.
The team is incredibly grateful for the support of the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club. The committee has been very proactive in ensuring the program is a success including funding eight sets of new roller skis when it became apparent that more juniors than expected had signed up.
Team members are eagerly awaiting more snowfall so they can test their new skills out on real skis. •

Cross Country News
Snow is a bit thin on the ground for cross country skiing at the moment, but there is plenty of snow in our future for winter 2021 at Falls Creek.
It is a beautiful clear day today and looking out the window at the expanse of the high plains makes me appreciate once again what a fantastic location Falls Creek is for XC skiing. Those awesome rolling mountains of the high plains make for cross country skiing terrain as good as anywhere in the world, and that is not just the marketing department talking. Where else can you feel like you are skiing on top of the world, with views forever but also be right at the tree line if the weather turns.
It is not just the geography that favours XC skiing, our great freeze thaw cycles create perfect creamy corn snow, ideal for fast offpiste skating adventures. While the rest of the world waits for that narrow window of perfect snow pack consolidation and weather, we get it regularly and throughout the season. No wonder Falls Creek is home to so many off-piste skating enthusiasts, often there are more skate tracks off the trail than on.

Looking Good Early!!
The purpose of this paper is to help our visitors maximise their experience of the area. All visitors are vital to our economy (especially in the current situation) and we here at the paper endeavour to show folks that they have chosen a great place in which to holiday. The pages of this publication have also been used to reinforce that fact that we live in a wonderful community and we like to stress upon our locals just how important our visitors are.
But, in pointing out the above, there are a couple of issues that need to be addressed. Falls Creek and the Upper Kiewa Valley are surrounded by National Park and State Forest. We like to think of these areas as pristine, allowing that there is a certain amount of development and around 150 people call Falls Creek home all year round. And all of these people respect the environment – and don’t litter.
During winter we can have as many as many as 6000 people here at any one time. Practical experience has shown that during winter there is more litter. But does it have to be that way?
Respect for yourself, respect for your fellow man and respect for the environment means simply that no-one should throw any litter out at any time. Put it on your pocket, on the floor in the car or in the boot – but never leave it outside. There are plenty of rubbish bins in this community to use.
And, on a positive note, you will also feel better when you know you’re doing your little bit to look after the environment.

The good news is that, at the time of going to press, the resort, thanks to some fabulous work by the snow-makers and groomers, would have Drovers Dream, Main Street, the Nastar Course, Mouse Trap and Wombats Ramble open at the moment. (These can change and are dependent on conditions).
OK, it’s not the full resort, but you can still get in a quite a few good hours, exercising all the time, breathing in crystal clear air, and when you do stop for a breather, there is some of the best scenery in the world to enjoy.
One of things that can put a ‘dampener’ on a good day is seeing empty chairs going up the hill when the queue is getting bigger. What we ask folks, for everyone’s sake, is that we get ourselves organised in the queue race. Halley’s Comet (Falls Express); Towers Chair and Drovers are all quad chairs –meaning that there are four seats on each chair. Everything flows better if those in the queue organise themselves into fours – even if it does mean going up with people you’ve never met. Meet them – they’re lovely people just like you. But, just be aware that we will need a bit of social, distancing in the queues.
Another tip. Don’t get into a lift queue and decide to use your phone. There are enough other elements to focus on – without trying to make a phone call. The best idea is to make your call when you get off the lift at the top. There’s space, there’s privacy and there’s time to make the call.

Posted clearly around the resort – in almost every cubicle – is the Alpine Responsibility Code. Read it, understand it, appreciate it – and then go out and enjoy it all.
Skiing/snowboarding is one of the very few activities undertaken on the side of a hill, in all sorts of conditions, with people of all ages and all abilities. Respect yourself and each other! Refer Page 12.
While we patiently wait for Mother Nature to bless us with some more snow, (hopefully this week) and the lift company snowmakers work their guns off, there are plenty of activities to keep the family outdoors and active these school holidays at Falls Creek. This week marks the start of school holidays and it looks like being busy. (Hence the rev up to get sorted in queues).
Now is the perfect time for beginners to own the slopes and perfect their skills. With the above mentioned runs open, there are lots of opportunities to learn and enjoy.
Snowsports School will be operating but the shortage of overseas instructors means that you may not get exactly what you would like – but we know that the professional team at Snowsports School will do their very best to make sure everyone is looked after. Booking ahead is the best option.

The Mount Beauty and District Community Band is back!! As has been the case for many community organisations, the Mount Beauty and District Community Band has had an interrupted and uncertain 15 months, due to COVID-19. No surprise really!
Thanks to the positive leadership and guidance of Musical Director Glenn Ramage, Band members have continued to practice either alone or, more recently, following strict COVID procedures, in their regular meeting place, the Jesse Hollonds Studio at Mount Beauty Secondary College.
The result… a Mid-Year Concert is to be held on June 26th at 2:30pm in the Tawonga Hall!
The program will feature some wonderful solos on saxophone, flute, trumpet, clarinet and tuba as well as a special unaccompanied solo tuba item. For the rest of the program Glenn has selected some favourites from the Bands’ repertoire.
With Free entry, a heated hall, talented musicians and great music, this sounds like an event not to be missed!

Regardless of how you enjoy your snow sport, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities that common sense, protective equipment and personal awareness can reduce. These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment.
Observe the Code and Share with others the Responsibility for a great experience
1. Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air.
2. Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress.
3. Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury.
4. Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
5. Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs.
6. Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
7. Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above. Look uphill and give way to others when entering/exiting a trail or starting downhill.
8. Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/boarding equipment, even when riding chairlifts.
9. Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol.
10. If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol.

A NOTE FROM SKI PATROL
Take Care!
With the high numbers of skiers and snowboarders expected to be out riding each day from the start of the Victorian school holidays this Saturday, but with only a few runs open, the Falls Creek Ski Patrol is asking everyone to be extra mindful of always riding in control at an appropriately safe speed. In particular, please show extra caution around children and beginners who are often less predictable out there on the slopes. We also remind all riders that Wombats Ramble is a dedicated slow riding area from the top to bottom. (which means it is not a race track)
There are many inherent hazards in skiing and snowboarding, including changes in the weather, visibility and snow conditions, as well as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snow making equipment. The Australian Ski Patrol Association has a video titled “R U Snowsafe” which provides a great overview of ski area safety, and can be found here https://vimeo.com/217594771.
What should you do if someone is injured out in the ski area?
Call the ski patrol on 5758 3502. If you don’t have your phone, you can ask anyone in a uniform (e.g. ski instructor or liftie) to contact the Ski Patrol for you, however ideally have someone stay with the injured person. To assist the Ski Patrol try to provide an accurate description of the location of the injured person. Other details such as the possible injury, whether they’re male or female, whether they’re a skier or snowboarder, and whether they’re an adult or child will also assist the Ski Patrol’s response.

On Saturday 12th June several members of the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty spent a wet morning in the CBD collecting for the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. Rotary members Ken Bell (facilitator), Roger Pyle, Barb Pyle, Rob Spargo and Ian Cohn rattled the cans around town and collected a generous amount of around $900. • Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on all batteries. Make sure yours is in good nick.

• Check your wheel chains and ensure that you know how to fit them correctly. Too many problems are caused by people not knowing how to fit chains correctly!
• Check the amount of coolant/anti-freeze in your radiator. Our Service Centres have a Glycometer which will measure how cold your radiator fluid can get before freezing.
• Carry a few emergency supplies, like a blanket, warm gloves, ice scraper, shovel – in case you get stuck out on the road.

8am I made a snowman.
8:10am A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn't make a snow woman.
8:15am So, I made a snow woman as well.
8:17am My feminist neighbour complained about the snow woman's voluptuous chest saying it objectified snow women everywhere.
8:20am The gay guys living nearby moaned it should have been two snow men instead.
8:22am The transgender person asked why I didn't just make one snow person with detachable parts.
8:25am The vegans at the end of the lane complained about the carrot nose, as vegetables are real food and not to be disrespected.
8:28am I am being called a racist because the snow couple is white!
8:31am The Muslim gent across the road demands the snow woman wear a burqa.
8:42am The feminist neighbour complained again that the broomstick of the snow woman needs to be removed because it depicted women in a domestic role.
8:45am TV news crew from ABC shows up. I am asked if I know the difference between snowmen and snowwomen?
I reply, "Snowballs" and am now called a sexist.
9:00am I'm on the News as a suspected terrorist, racist, homophobic, sensibility offender, bent on stirring up trouble during difficult weather.
9:10am I am asked if I have any accomplices.
9.15am My children are removed and taken to social services.
Moral: There is no moral to this story. It's just a different view of the world in which we live today, and same say it is only getting worse!
