Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. After a two-year hiatus due to the dreaded you know what, MTB de Femme is returning to Falls Creek in 2022. Put these dates in your diary: Friday 4th March to Sunday 6th March – the weekend before Peaks Challenge.
The ethos of the event is based on getting women riding the trails at Falls Creek in a friendly and safe environment. Better still, the original event founder Jo Prothero and event co-ordinator Xena Pahina will be running the event.
I wonder how many will remember the very first MTB de Femme back in January of 2016. The organisers hoped for about 35. About fifty ladies advised that they were coming and just on 75 turned up for a fabulous day. So many great comments like:
“I had the best day yesterday! Woke up this morning wanting to come back! Everything was awesome… So well organised. The guides, the coffee makers, the staff at Milch and the bar we finished up at (BE Foodstore), the girls on bikes, the weather, the scenery, the ride, the shuttle guys… absolutely everything (hope I didn't forget anyone ). Thank you so much!” Krishna Castricum.
“Best Day Ever!! Thanks so much FCRM for a super fun event! A big shout out to Rachel Whipps and Jo Prothero for being awesome group leaders and creating a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere. I'm stoked for the next Female MTB Social Ride!” Catherine Robichaud
So many women have had a bad first experience on a mountain bike. We’ve all been there, riding their partner’s ‘old’ bike and following them down a technical trail, scaring the pants off them, (not literally), leaving them never wanting to get back on the bike again! MTB de Femme is all about changing that.

MTB de Femme is all about getting out on the bike, having a laugh, learning a few new skills, and connecting with like-minded women - with coffee, lunch and champagne added to the mix!
Not sure if it’s for you, that’s ok. “There is something for everyone” says founder Jo Prothero.
“You can sign up for the social ride aspect, a full day of activity, all the way through to the entire weekend of learning, riding, bike maintenance, yoga and socialising.” Shuttle passes for your riding can also part of the deal.
There are plenty of accommodation options available on the mountain so you can truly

We here in the Upper Kiewa Valley are still a couple of weeks away from Christmas, but reports coming in from local businesses are that you, our dear readers, are shopping local more than any other year!
After a tough couple of years that have included bushfires, COVID and losing almost all of our tourists thanks to lockdowns, it’s no secret our small businesses have been hurting more than ever.
So it’s fantastic to hear these businesses are now busier than ever, with locals, visitors and holiday home owners all making the switch from giant chain businesses and deciding to keep their hard earned dollars here in the valley this Christmas.
Of course, we also have to commend our businesses for the vast range of goods they have on offer, with them all growing bigger and better year after year. We’re absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to gifts for all ages and interests, whether it’s gear for the outdoor lovers, books, games and toys, clothing for every occasion, sustainable and locally made wares, and more - so it really is

Outdoor Balcony Bar with spectacular views open from 4pm and restaurant from 6pm.

On New Year’s Eve we will be serving a special degustation dinner for $125 per person (excludes beverages).

a no brainer when it comes to choosing where to shop.
We can also see how busy it’s been by our Shop Local Campaign. On the 1st December we distributed books of raffle tickets to the 11 local businesses involved and not even a week later, we were already having to hand out more, with hundreds of tickets already filled out by shoppers.

If you haven’t already heard, our Shop Local campaign is an extra incentive to keep your Christmas shopping in the valley this year. Some of our local businesses have rallied together to offer two amazing prizes to two lucky shoppers - $350 and $200 worth of gift vouchers. All you have to do is spend $30 in store at a participating business during the month of December and you’ll be in the running!
Participating business are (in alphabetical order) Alpine Outfitters, Gather & Harvest, Mount Beauty Hardware & Drapery, Mount Beauty Guardian Pharmacy, North Eastern Home Improvement Co, Rocky Valley Bikes & Snowsports, Sassy Road, SkiPlus, Tawonga South Butchery, Tawonga South Newsagency & Post Office, and Valley N Peaks.
The lucky winners will be drawn on Christmas Eve - 24th December 2021.

While we’re on the topic of shopping locally, we also wanted to give a big shout out to the Mount Beauty Primary School, and its students and their families for the effort put into their recent raffle.
With our local businesses often approached to provide sponsorships and donations for sporting clubs and community organisations, the school recognised how tough things had been and instead asked families to purchase and donate gift vouchers as prizes.

Students were then given incentives to sell tickets and did an incredible job raising money for their school. The whole thing was a huge success - we’ve spoken to multiple businesses who sold multiple gift vouchers as prizes for the raffle, and said they really appreciated the change in approach by the school.
To put it simply - we just love hearing that locals are supporting locals, and it plays a huge part in what keeps this community going. So go out, spend $30, put yourself in the running to win some great prizes and have a fantastic Christmas! •
This paper would like to recognise the fabulous effort and tremendous amount of work that has gone in to producing the very best Christmas Tree to be found anywhere in the area. It is a credit to all involved and will be very much appreciated by residents and visitors alike. The front page photo by Roslyn Ann Photography with all the kids is an example of just how much that Christmas Tree is appreciated. So, on behalf of the community I would like to say thanks team and very well done. Ed •

Each year since 2004 the Mark Robinson Scholarship for Rural Health has been awarded to local people to encourage and support them in taking up studies in health-related disciplines. And then, once qualified, to hopefully return to practice in the Alpine Shire. The award was established by the board of directors at Alpine Health in recognition of the contribution of Dr J Mark Robinson and family to the development of health services in rural Australia in particular the Kiewa Valley. Mark was significantly involved in the Rural Doctors Association for quite a few years.
This year the recipient of the Mark Robinson Scholarship for Rural Health is Paige Dillon.
Paige is a Mount Beauty local with a young family who has taken up study this year to become an Enrolled Nurse through the Alpine Institute in Myrtleford. Paige will complete her Enrolled Nurse studies in June next year with plans to continue her study to become a Registered Nurse. She is particularly interested in specialising in Sexual and Reproductive health and would love to be able to offer those services to the Alpine Shire region in the future.
Falls Creek Resort Management will be collecting hard waste on Wednesday 26th April - the day after ANZAC Day. Please see our Hard Waste Collection guidelines on the website, or if you require any additional information, please contact the FCRM Office on 03 5758 1200. • Summer Debrief
Paige stood out in her application due to her willingness to help her local community through volunteering for local groups and her goals to provide her community with specialised health care previously mentioned.
Congratulations Paige Dillon and good luck with your studies. Ed. •
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.

After much deliberation, and after reviewing the community consultation that AGL included as part of the application to introduce a waterway rule, MSV has published its decision to allow for the waterway’s rule introduction, effective of 9 December 2021.
This means that users of the pondage, including for powered watercraft, will need to stick to the speed limit of 5 Knots on the Pondage from 9 December 2021.
For a lot of people who participated in the community consultation, I know that this may not be the result that some of the Pondage’s users were hoping for. We heard from many people of their fond memories of using the Pondage for speed boating and jet skiing.
As a lot of community members have also voiced to us, safe usage of the Pondage is of paramount importance to us. As waterway manager for the Mount Beauty Regulating Pondage, AGL has a responsibility to manage the foreseeable risks to all users.
Unlike the nearby Hume Weir, the Pondage’s small surface area and variable water levels poses a hazard for high-speed boating. The small surface area also offers little room for multiple leisure participants to use the pondage at the same time.
AGL will soon install new signage at the
