As a result of situations in previous summers, during the busy Christmas/January period as well as Easter, Falls Creek village was advised by the CFA and Victoria Police that there were problems with too many vehicles in the village. Therefore, the village will be closed to parking this Easter from 5pm Thursday 1st April to 8am Tuesday 6th April. A half hour period will enable visitors to drive to their accommodation, unload and then remove their vehicle to the car-parking below the village.
The irony is that while we have promoted the village for summer trade – and this summer trade is growing – it produces its own set of different circumstances. As a snow resort, the concept of the ski through

The rise in summer trade – and the fact there is no snow on the village roads has meant the visitors, as well as staff and residents could always drive into the village. But, experience has shown that during the busy times the number of vehicles in the village creates problems.
From the simple ‘blocking in of other vehicles’ to the biggest problem - the inability of our major fire-fighting appliance - the tracked vehicle ‘pumper’ – not being able to get to a fire!
The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
The ‘Pumper’ (its colloquial name) is a track vehicle designed to be used during snow season as well as during the rest of the year. It is capable of pushing water up to a height of four or five floors – very necessary in a resort on the side of a hill. It is also a little bit wider than your average ‘fire truck’ and the tracks make it slightly less manoeuvrable than a normal vehicle of this size.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
God forbid – should a fire start anywhere in the village and the ‘pumper’ not be able to reach the site, one does not need a lot of imagination to know that it would be ‘good night nurse’ for pretty well the whole village …and it’s too bloody late afterwards!
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
On the positive side, feedback from the community (residents and visitors alike) has been extremely positive. We are a family resort and the lack of vehicles in the village has produced a nicer ambience – with folk happy to wander most places, kids playing

Then we have the mountain bike fraternitytaking advantage of our fabulous trails. One of the secrets to the success of our mountain biking program development is that the majority of the trails all hook up with the village. You can start from the village and return to the village by any number of routes – and a quick pedal through uncluttered streets is so much better for everyone.
Special needs visitors are able to call in to the Resort Management Office/Visitor Information Centre to obtain a special access pass.

Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

“A little rain never hurt anyone” is what, I am certain, approximately 400 hikers were telling themselves as the rain started falling in Slalom Plaza at 6:30am last Saturday morning before we set out for the inaugural Australian Grand Traverse. Heading out from Falls Creek in the early morning we all knew it was going to be a challenging day, no matter the weather.
We warmed up our legs and got the heart going for the first gentle climb up Wombat’s Ramble. Fair to say the easiest climb of the day. A gentle rain followed us on and off throughout the day making the puddles from Pole 333 across the high plains that little bit deeper and the muddy decent from Mt Jim to the Cobunga River was a lot slicker and slower to navigate than my knees and quads would have liked but I wouldn’t have changed anything.
Well perhaps the last 1km up the Skeleton trail into Hotham Heights might have been worth changing. When my teammate and I were 30kms in, knowing the finish line is at the top of the trail and the rain started to pour we just had to laugh. When the flash of lightning struck off to our left in the valley followed by an almighty crack of thunder overhead we knew we had to keep on moving - we hadn’t beaten the thunderstorm but it was not going to stop us!
After 9.5 hours my teammate and I made it across the line with a couple of amazing ladies we’d met in the last 500m, swearing, laughing and just bloody glad to have made it to the end! To say that teams out on the trail were anything but encouraging to each other would be an understatement. The feeling of ‘we’re all in this together’ seemed to be the motto whether you were the first team over the line in a cracking 5 hours 20 minutes (for the Coffin Dodgers) or 9 hours

What a weekend for the inaugural Australian Grand Traverse! Apparent temperatures below zero, 13mm of rain, strong winds with gusts up to 50km/hr at times. Despite the challenging conditions, our field of athletes pushed themselves physically and mentally, perhaps beyond what they thought possible, and crossed the line with smiles on their faces.

The Alpine National Park Discovery Days are located at the historically significant Wallace’s and Cope Hut precinct on the magnificent Bogong High Plains.

Volunteer Park Guides are at Wallace’s Hut between 10am and 2pm over the four days of this Easter. Drop by at any point and our volunteers will be available for a chat.
It's a big Saturday of kids activities to keep our littler visitors happy and occupied. Join us from 10am - 2pm for Kids activities in Slalom Plaza with fun games and activities for the whole family. For another little sweet treat, pop up to Snonuts to see the freshly-made donuts being created from the viewing platform. So fresh, and delicious!
At 2pm, the Pump Track Derby kicks off in the Village Bowl. It's a great event for the kids to do big zooms around the pump track.
Make sure you get up to the Village Bowl on Easter Sunday, the Falls Creek Tennis and Social Club will have the Breakfast BBQ running from 8:30 with food available to purchase. The Frying Pan Coffee Van will be pumping out coffees from 9am.
At 9:30am we'll commence the Easter Egg hunt, an obvious crowd favourite with the kids, and it's a hoot for the adults to watch.
From 10:30am the infamous Falls Creek Egg Toss starts. A regular feature in our Easter celebrations, this competitive battle of the eggs is sure to scramble a few eggs (and egos) as the googies start flying.
Important notice about Easter visitation this year: Anyone who has entered Victoria from the City of Brisbane and Moreton Bay Region since 12 March 2021 must immediately self-isolate, get a coronavirus test within 72 hours, and stay isolated until they receive a negative result. If this applies to you, please get tested as soon as possible and follow the relevant advice issued by Queensland Health.
Breathe in the Victorian Alps. Utilising the ease of an e-bike, Falls Creek Guides access ideal hiking locations around Falls Creek. In winter they ski tour to the hidden valleys that are just beyond the resort. Their private group tours start and end at Nelse Alpine Lodge, Falls Creek.

With a passion for ‘all things bikes’, the team of certified coaches at The Fastline Bikademy (TFB) showcase the regions spectacular mountain bike parks by hosting a series of weekend courses throughout the year. After bike set up and skills coaching, coaches will provide guided riding through picturesque settings putting learnt skills into practice.

Forgotten to pack your warm coat or need a hot water bottle whilst camping these holidays? Are you tired of drinking your wine from plastic picnic cups? Maybe an old pair of runners for the river would be just the thing to protect your feet. Then the Mount Beauty Op Shop is the place to go. Operated by a group of enthusiastic volunteers the Op Shop provides a great service to tourists and locals alike.
Not everyone is aware that donated items from the community are diverted into several channels. The higher quality items appear on the racks and shelves for sale to the public at bargain prices, whilst the rest is sent onto other charities or businesses. In 2018 over a tonne of clean cotton items were sold to Jacks Rags, and this year we will beat that mark. This is a great recycling service for items that are not saleable. We collect and distribute to disaster relief, animal refuge, family services, the homeless; and to local people who request help for worthy causes - a win, win situation!
With the weather change we begin to think about all the great things we can do in the snow, and about checking our last year’s ski gear. The Op Shop has a massive Ski Clothing sale happening again this year beginning on Easter Saturday. We are selling good quality second hand jackets, pants, après boots, goggles, helmets, hats, gloves, mittens and incidentals for both adults and children. A few high quality items have marked prices, but most are under $20.
This is a bargain sale not to be missed! Spread the word, and we’ll see you at the Op Shop in Hollonds Street on Easter Saturday from 9:30. •

Approximately 10 or 15 extra soaring aircraft will be visiting Mount Beauty for Easter with several coming from the Melbourne Gliding club. The popularity of this area for flying is borne out by the fact that pilots, their families and their aircraft are coming from places like Melbourne, Temora and Sydney.

Again this year, Mount Beauty Car Club is hosting its’ major two day race meeting on Easter Saturday and Sunday.
Cars are coming from as far as Swan Hill and Ballarat to compete, with racing starting from 11:30 am on both days. One of the feature events is the $1,000 Dash for Cash. This sudden death shootout sees cars competing in two lap sprints; with the winner proceeding to take on the next challenger. This event is always a real crowd pleaser and for this meeting it is planned to be held as the last event on the Saturday so the cars (and their drivers) have a chance to recover for the finals on Sunday afternoon.

The sighting of Jesus - The proof of the resurrection.
There is no way we can get an easy handle on what happened at Easter. What took place is outside all our normal ways of understanding things. It transcends all attempts, ancient and modern, to define it. There was neither preexisting language, nor subsequent religious or philosophical concepts adequate for that Easter happening.
Those people of two thousand years ago were in exactly the same position as we are today. They had no way of getting a handle on the resurrection. Nor can we - not even with our advanced scientific method and technological know-how. There is no adequate explanation for what took place.
The fact is that on Easter Day God did something radically new. It was the same Jesus, yet not the same Jesus. He was no mere immortal spirit (as some Greeks might believe), nor was he an earth-trapped ghost destined to spook people over the centuries. Those first believers, from Mary, to Peter and John, to Thomas, to Paul, all encountered a real person with some radically new kind of body which defied explanations based on their normal experience in time and space.
This Easter event was unheard of. Utterly fresh. God’s new age was here. Easter says: Get ready to stretch your minds. Prepare to stretch your understanding to the limits and then still some more! For on this day God has done a thing unseen before; a new era has begun. You cannot explain the resurrection. Yet it happened. The disciples changed from timid followers to dynamic outspoken witnesses. Many people believed, beyond a shadow of doubt, that Jesus had risen from the dead and He was God’s Son. It is the reason for the sudden emergence of that vibrant community which was the dynamic young church in action, and of the continuing church of today. So, expand your mind, and welcome the risen Jesus into your realm of activity. • Modified from a sermon by Bruce Prewer

AGL are currently seeking a local who is interested in a 12 month* contract based at the AGL Hydro Information Centre in Bogong Village.
Duties include:
• Opening/closing the centre.
• Setting up interactive displays.
• Admin work including recording attendance. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the AGL Hydro scheme and Centre displays, along with great communication skills and ability to work well and interact with people. There is something about the Kiewa Valley that, no matter how long you’ve been away for, continues to call you back home.
For Jenny Laidlaw, formerly Jenny Smith, that call was clear and loud - in fact it was so strong that it drew her back to the very property her parents built from scratch in the 1980s, and she called home for many years.
Jenny, along with her husband, Andy, are the proud new owners of Kiewa Country Cottages in Simmonds Creek Road, Tawonga South, but the family’s history goes right back to the very foundations of the business.
Originally from Glen Waverley, the Smith family had strong connections to the Kiewa Valley, spending weekends and school holidays at their holiday house in Braeside

After around a decade of visiting, Keith and Margaret Smith decided to make their stay permanent, and in 1981 began building Kiewa Country Cottages. At the time, it was a blank canvasthere were no trees, a creek you couldn’t see for the blackberries, and nothing but Rob Hollonds’ paddocks for as far as the eye could see; quite the transformation from the sky-high gumtrees and surrounding homes you’ll find now.

The family officially moved into their new home and business in November 1982, with Jenny and her sister becoming weekly boarders at Scots School Albury. The family ran the cottages until 1989, but didn’t move far, building right next door, where they lived until 1997.
Keith and Margaret were active in the community as members of the Lions Club. Keith, a talented artist, still has his work still hanging on the walls of many locals, and Margaret was also busy writing for this very publication.
Jenny said moving back to the North East wasn’t actually on the cards for the Laidlaw family, who had been settled in Jan Juc on the Surf Coast for the past 20 years. That was until March 2020, when their middle daughter returned from Canada and Jenny wasn’t able to be around her while she isolated at home.
“I thought ‘Where can I go for two weeks where I’m going to be happy?’ and I picked Mount Beauty,” Jenny says.
“That was the trigger for us to start making some decisions about moving.”
Andy had never spent a great deal of time in the valley, took over from Jenny when their daughter was cleared for COVID and spent the last three nights of the Air BnB booking in Mount Beauty.

that’s when it got me - somehow we started looking at properties,” Andy says.
“We found a house in Allamar Court. It had only been on the market for five days and we put an offer in, and we got it.”
Eight months later, they were enjoying their new home in Tawonga South when - as fate would have it - Kiewa Country Cottages came on the market.
“Curiosity got the better of us and we said let’s go and look at it anyway. We’d heard that it had sold, so I thought we had nothing to lose, but when we arrived, the agent said the sale had fallen through,” Jenny says.
They went from ‘having a look’ to putting in an offer that night, before taking over the business on 1st March this year - and the rest, you could say, is history.
With the family’s passion for the snowJenny is a cross country skiier and former member of the Australian Ski Team, while Andy has worked with Mount Buller Ski Patrol for the past 40 years - as well as a love for hiking and fly fishing, it’s no surprise they’ve settled into valley life with ease. Busy with bookings from the get-go, there’ll be little down time for the Laidlaw’s with plans to rejuvenate the cottages, adding their own style and replacing some of Keith and Margaret’s original features that have surprisingly survived the past 40 years.
“I would like it to all have been finished yesterday,” Jenny laughs, but says they’re really enjoying being back in the family business.

Victorian State MP Bill Tilley says new regulations allowing campers almost unrestricted access to river frontage, even when that river frontage is part of a farm, need to change.
The Member for Benambra says more than 10,000 landholders will be affected by laws that allow people to camp for up to four weeks on their property.
The laws were passed last year, buried in amendments to National Park boundaries, but the details of its application to river frontages with grazing licences are now open to submissions until April 19.
Mr Tilley said the full extent of the regulations had only recently come to light.
“These laws passed through the Victorian Parliament with next to no detail and only with the help of the upper house cross benches – minor parties and independents looking to gain favour with the State Government,” he said.
“If the regulations remain unchanged then campers can stay for 28 days, camp just 101m from your farmhouse and access unused road reserves, some that have been pasture for more than 100 years.
“There is no clear direction on how this will be patrolled and regulated, no explanation of public liability exposure if the campers meet a bull or if they just have an accident.
“You can’t deny access and can’t even put up a sign to say, ‘Please shut the gate’.”

Mr Tilley said community outrage must drive sensible change to the draft regulations before they come into effect on September 1.
“These farmers and the river frontage they pay to use and have maintained for decades, is already open to hikers, shooters and anglers during the day but camping throws up a whole new set of challenges,” he said.
“The consultation period still has a few weeks to run and it needs as many people to register their concerns at the Engage Victoria website.
“Politicians can bump their gums as much as they like but unless the Labour Government understands the frustration, anger and danger to the community, then I fear it won’t change.
“If you need help with your submission then don’t hesitate to give us a call.”
