TThe National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy. Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
his annual event, held on the Labour Day Weekend, this year Sunday 10th March, is a well supervised activity for people of all ages with a healthy level of fitness. Young children must be accompanied by an adult. This is a 19km walk/run to the top of Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest peak. The Starting Gate, at the Mountain Creek Picnic Grounds, Mountain Creek Road, Tawonga is open from 6:45am to 8:30am, and on the day entries will be taken from 6am. Participants will receive a medallion at the finish of the event, and fruit and water are included in the entry fee. At the time of writing 75 entries had been received on line, and the interest expressed means that around 250 people are expected to take part. This will be the 41st running of the event and all participants must register prior to
starting. Location: Start/Finish is at the Mountain Creek Picnic Area.
To get there: From Mount Beauty: Take Damms Road north to the intersection with Mountain Creek Road (5km), turn right and follow the bitumen to the picnic area.
Entry Fee: Adults - $25. Juniors (under 16 years) - $10. Family - $60. This event is a fund raiser for the UKV Lions Club.
Safety & Checkpoints: There are manned checkpoints around the course as follows: Picnic area start; start of Staircase Spur; Bivouac Hut (cut-off time 11am); the Summit (cut off time 1pm); top of Eskdale Spur, Camp Creek Gap and finish at the picnic area.
Clothing to wear & take: Normal walking gear, but it could be cold on top so take a water-proof jacket, long pants and warm polar fleece type top, hat, sunglasses,
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

The story of Peaks Challenge began well before the first riders clipped in to the pedals for the first time. Our Event Chief at the time, Vincent Ciardulli, had long dreamed of a loop ride in the Victorian High Country. Then when the dirt road up the back of Falls Creek was sealed in 2009, his dream came true and in 2010 Peaks Challenge Falls Creek was born.
10 years on and this ride has captured the hearts of those looking to find out what’s possible on a bike. Incredibly, in the bunch this year are five riders who’ve conquered all 10 rides. That’s about five Everests of climbing!

The stories of Peaks lives on in all the incredible riders. From year one, when it rained non-stop and the newly sealed back of Falls caused exhausted riders to puncture two or three times, to year four, when it was so hot riders were scrambling into creeks for extra fluid.
Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.
Or year eight, when an amazing team effort meant the ashes of a rider who tragically didn’t make it to the start line made it over the finish line.

The long standing ties between Peaks Challenge and Falls Creek are testament to our years-long dedication to make Falls Creek a beacon for cycle tourism in Victoria’s North East. Together with our partners across the region, we are working hard to cement the North East as the premier cycling destination in Australia. Peaks Challenge is a shining showcase of this vision.
The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

Back in the mid 2000’s AGL decided to dig a 6.5kilometre long tunnel that would be five metres in diameter. By my Handymath. com calculator, that works out to 12,762,716,912 cubic metres of rock –which was rated at about 200mpa (with average concrete rated at 20 to 30 mpa). This incredible amount of rock – which had not been designated for any purpose –would surely be enough to seal the 32km of the Bogong High Plains Road from Falls Creek to Shannonvale. And so the process started and as a result of that sealing – many activities have now been able to take place. One of the first and still the biggest event is what was then called the Bicycle Network
Three Peaks that took place on Sunday 7th March 2010. 1852 riders entered, with some electing to ride from Falls Creek to Dinner Plain and others electing to do the second half – Dinner Plain to Falls Creek.
The weather on Saturday was great – but Sunday – Oh dear! It rained and it was cold – especially climbing Hotham –with many pulling out at Dinner Plain.
Those that came on to Falls Creek had to contend with the hill at WTF corner (After riding around 200km) and then had to deal with the rock splinters that were sticking to tyres and causing flats –many, many flat tyres. But those that did make it had really achieved – and we mean ‘really achieved!’ 2011 wasn’t quite as bad. The rain held off until later in the day and the road had been used for twelve months –meaning the rock splinters were pretty well gone. Since then, we’ve had a pretty good run. The organisation has been great. Signage is clear; volunteers have come on board and,
with entries capped at 2000, it is still a major event to be part of.
Your editor spoke to one chap as he arrived last year, asking how many times – and the reply was “this is my second Peaks” And his ‘significant other’ leaned over from the passenger seat and stated “and when I picked him up at the finish last year, he stated he was never coming back!” The Peaks has that effect on people.
Many years ago Tina Cook was sitting in Gateway having a coffee when a gentleman (Mamil) clip clopped in. Tina greeted him and asked “what are you doing?” “Riding bikes” “Where from” was Tina’s next question. “Mount Beauty’ was the reply and Tina’s concluding statement was “What, is your car broken down?” The follow up was that several years later Tina completed the very first Peaks in 2010 in 13 hours – an excellent effort – and has since ridden it again to support her son Mitchell.
Over the years many locals have ridden the event. Names like Bernie McArdle, Andy Mero, Justin Hanlon and Larry Franklin are just a few that come to mind. Then later we have Brian Peacock from Rocky Valley Bikes and Meredith Iaria; Ron Gallagher; Mandy Bland; Atilla Kerestes; Shaun Power (having done if five or six times) Kevin Bradley and Iain Morrison.
Larry mentioned that when he got to Omeo a couple of years back “he was
cooked!” After a pie and a pint of milk, and a close look at the others who were going on “they look as bad as I feel – so if they can do it, so can I!”
Now called the Peaks Challenge Falls Creek (as opposed to Three Peaks), it attracts around 2000 entrants, most accompanied by their families and friends –making it probably the busiest weekend on our calendar. Make these folk feel welcome and we’ll all have a great weekend. •

Last Friday Falls Creek hosted the 2019 Interschools Mountain Biking Championships. This is the first event of its kind in Victoria. With cycle tourism and cycle participation exploding in the North East, Falls Creek Resort Management, in conjunction with Mount Beauty Secondary College, is proud to spearhead the launch of an innovative mountain biking event that encourages participation in the sport at a junior level.
The snowsports Interschools event each winter is huge on a state-wide and national level and we expect this event has the potential to be just as popular as a nonwinter based activity. (although your marshal did hear one of the little tackers saying “I only entered to get a day off school!”).

As a volunteer marshal, your Ed had the chance to talk with several of the visiting teachers in charge of their groups and all seemed really happy with the event, expressing a desire to see it grow and were willing to offer positive feedback to the organising team.
The format of the mountain bike event was XCO – which is Olympic format, cross country course. The kids did small loops, and as the ages went up, the number of laps grew.

There were some fabulous individual performances and on the last lap of the section One event, one of the Cathedral College guys was heard to say “Gee that girl can ride” as Ayla Armitage went past him. And then she was seen riding her road bike home to Mount Beauty.
Well done to all competitors, the atmosphere was really relaxed and rewarding. Also well done to the organising team. It’s been over twelve months in the making – but turned out to be a great event. •

Horse racing is something a little more than a past-time in Australia. It involves business, owners, jockeys, grounds staff, bookies, lots and lots of punters. Almost every town has a track and at least once a year, there is a race meeting. The big city meetings are popular (like the Cup), but some-what overwhelming. That’s why a country Picnic Race Day is so appealing.
As a result of extreme temperatures experienced last January, the meeting has been moved from its traditional first Saturday in January. Therefore, this year’s Mount Beauty & District Community Bank Dederang Races will take place on Saturday March 16th.

The day will feature a six race card, with the feature race being the Milestone Chemicals Dederang Cup. Congratulations to Milestone Chemicals – as this is their 28th year of sponsoring the Dederang Races. The day will also feature a hotly contested ‘Falls Creek Resort Fashions on the Field’ competition, children’s entertainment by Kelly Sports, the famous Madman’s Mile and the Tug-of-War championship. The other ace in the hole at MCBR is Faizal Kasmani who hails from Singapore and has been in Australia for five years. While one side of the menu offers classic Aussie fare such as parmys, steaks, schnitzel, garlic bread, fish and chips and burgers (freshly made beef patties), the other side offers an eclectic mix of Edamame, Gyozas, Teriyaki Chicken, Katsu Curry and Tonkatsu Pork. This is where Faizal steps in, his time served in Melbourne at a Japanese restaurant in Footscray results in a selection of great dishes not found anywhere else in town. There is always a weekly specials board offering some fresh choices as the team at MCBR work hard to source fresh, top quality, local produce. The crew here is also flexible and if you have specific dietary requirements (gluten free, vegan, vegetarian) they are happy to work with you to cater to your needs. The space is large, open and functional and the location means that a short walk around the venue results in great views of the valley and surrounding mountains. The bar has a good selection of wines by the glass or bottle, beers, juice and soft drinks all in the mid-price range. The owners are exceptionally friendly and work hard to make all of their guests feel welcome and well looked after. It is lovely to see this venue open to the public again and it is well worth a visit to sample the fresh meals and the wonderful service. •

lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. This weekend sees a change to our regular Trails Tales & Tucker Schedule. Due to Peaks Challenge in Falls Creek, we will be offering a brunch walk on Sunday the 10th. Starting at 9am from the Visitor Information Centre, we will drive you out to the Wallace’s Hut car park, guide you around a meandering four km circuit to Cope Hut where you will enjoy a delicious morning tea brunch provided by the magnificent Diana Alpine Lodge. During the walk you will hear tales of the wonderful Bogong High Plains and its indigenous beginnings, the antics of the cattlemen, the development of the area due to the SEC and stories of how Falls Creek came to be. From the Cope Hut carpark, we will drive you back to Falls Creek in time for the festivities of Peaks Challenge.

the launch of The Mindful Kind - the first book by Kiewa Valley’s own author and podcaster extraordinaire, Rachael Kable. Rachael kicked off the event by doing a reading of her book, before guiding a short meditation, answering plenty of questions from the audience and signing copies of ‘The Mindful Kind.’
“The support from the incredible community there was palpable,” Rachael said. “I received lots of hugs from people I’ve known for such a long time and kind words from friends, previous colleagues and even a few lovely people I hadn’t met before.”

Falls Creek 2019 Seasonal Operational Staff
4SITE has provided a range of services at Falls Creek Alpine Resort for the Management Board under contract since 2014. 4SITE is looking for a range of experienced and enthusiastic staff to work in Falls Creek for the coming snow season to complement our returning staff.
Experienced and new staff are encouraged to apply. Staff with experience within the Resort, with appropriate skills and willing to work in a range of positions, are encouraged to apply. Training will be provided to all successful applicants.
Positions Available
(full time, part time, casual & contract)
The positions would include a mix of work in the following areas.
• Car parking staff and attendants
• Waste collection staff
• Snow Cat operators
• Customer Services personnel
• Shuttle Drivers (Snow Cat & wheeled vehicles)
• Freight delivery personnel
• Cleaning Staff
Manual Car Licence is essential. Medium Rigid and Forklift Licence is preferred but not essential. First Aid is advantageous, however training can be provided.
