PUMP TRACK OPENING Additional Assets

T

he Mount Beauty Pump Track is the latest addition to the Mount Beauty recreation reserve and Saturday October 28th saw the official opening ceremony with rider demos, ribbon cutting, a host of dignitaries and a BBQ provided by Team Mount Beauty. This further development means that the precinct now contains a BMX track, skatepark and bowl and a pump track. We are lucky to be able to have such a fantastic facility servicing the needs of our kids (of all ages) to be active, to congregate and to further their skills. And, all of these facilities are located right next to the footy/cricket oval, the tennis courts, the netball court, the lake, the playground and the BBQ area – all within a short walk to the airfield. Pump tracks were originally designed as a means for BMX riders and mountain bikers to develop their bike handling and confidence. They are suitable for all wheeled sports including skateboards, scooters and balance bikes.

Visitor Information Centre - OPEN FOR BUSINESS -

Mondays to Fridays 9am – 5pm Weekends & Public Holidays 9am – 3pm

Pump tracks are very much like a mini roller coaster and encourage innovative play and are enormously fun. The pump track in Mount Beauty was built by ‘Trailscapes’ who are an industry leader in this space. Team Mount Beauty would like to express our gratitude for their efforts and to say how pleased we are with the outcome.

Major projects like this don't happen without financial backing and Team Mount Beauty would like to acknowledge the Federal Government Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grant scheme for providing $364,000 in funding.

As our local federal representative Helen Haines was invited, but unfortunately couldn't attend due to prior commitments. A brief note of congratulations was read out on her behalf by the Team Mount Beauty club president Carly Emond. AGL continued their support of Team Mount Beauty by providing $25000 through their Community Support Funding. The timing of this funding was invaluable in getting the project off the ground. AGL was represented by Erik Harvey (Civil Team Support) who, being local, gets to see the benefits of the pump track often.

The Alpine Shire has committed $30,000 for landscaping and finishing works. The shire has also committed to take responsibility for maintaining the area with ongoing maintenance. Councillor Tony Keeble spoke on behalf of the Alpine Shire Council and knocked out a few laps around the pump track. Helen Havercroft (Director Customer and Community) was also on hand representing the council. These projects can be quite complex and Team Mount Beauty would like to acknowledge and express appreciation for the excellent project management of Callum Brown from BCX Projects. Jamie Armitage took the opportunity to express the club's gratitude to the Pump Track working group, our funding providers and the enthusiasm the general community has had for this project. Team Mount Beauty is enormously proud of all our volunteers and to see the fruition of their ideas and efforts is wonderful. Jamie and the Pump Track working group have put countless hours into the pump track and Team Mount Beauty believes this will be a treasured community asset for years to come. • Scooter for TMB

TMB NEWS Subsidised Female Skills Clinics

T

eam Mount Beauty is partnering with All Terrain Cycles in Bright to bring two of their fabulous female coaches to Mount Beauty on Tuesday, November 7th, 2023 to run a couple of chicks only skills clinics. The clinics will be open to both Members and Non-Members with Team Mount Beauty offering subsidised spots (50% discount) to TMB Members. We will run a beginner and an intermediate clinic with eight spots available in each (depending on interest and rider skill level). The clinics will run for a duration of three hours at Big Hill Mountain Bike Park starting at 9am. The beginner session would suit riders who know how to ride a bike and have ridden off-road before but who are learning the skills of mountain biking or riders who have been off the bike in recent times and are looking to get back into the sport or more comfortable riding in their ‘own’ backyard. This is not an intro to mountain-biking course. Riders must be comfortable on green trails (ie Survey Track or Shady Gully). The intermediate session will focus on fine tuning those basic skills that lead to us being more competent and confident riders on the trails including cornering (we all know we do one side better than the other), braking and body position. Intermediate riders will feel comfortable riding blue trails for example riding up to Cattleyards and down Bananarama.

Bistro open Tues to Sat from 5:30pm Bar open 7 days from 2pm DRIVE IN BOTTLESHOP

Open:Sunday to Thursday: 10am - 9pm Friday & Saturday: 1 0am - 10pm

Member Cost: $50. Non-Member Cost: $100 (Payment not required at registration. TMB will invoice you directly for the course) All participants will need to have Recreational AusCycling Insurance and show proof of this when registering for the course. Any questions please email: info@ tmb.org.au or text/call Carly Emond on 0497 961 153. •

Great Support Big Hill recently saw an influx of hi-vis working hard on the new kids track, 'Hydroflow!’ Hydroflow will be a new riding area in the bottom paddock of Big Hill MTB Park close to the trailhead. There will be a variety of trails that are designed to encourage skill development and inspire our kids to explore their love of mountain biking. As part of AGL's Staff Volunteer days, Team Mount Beauty supervised a hard working crew to tackle the tough task of building these trails. Team Mount Beauty (and, of course, the rest of the mountain biking community) are very grateful for the funding AGL has provided to enable this

AGL TO SUBLEASE BOGONG VILLAGE A Positive Move

O

n Wednesday 1st November AGL announced that it will sublease Bogong Village to Worker HQ (a Grollo Group entity). For the un-initiated, Bogong Village is a mountain village located approximately halfway between Mount Beauty and Falls Creek in Northeast Victoria. Under the sublease agreement, the Grollo Group will take over the ownership and operation of Bogong Village and redevelop it over the next three years. This will include investing in renovating village facilities including the 27 buildings and tavern, with a view to providing key worker accommodation for Falls Creek. Grollo aims to deliver 200 beds for Falls Creek workers starting in winter 2024. AGL Head of Hydro, Simon Kelley, said the sublease to the Grollo Group is a great outcome for the region. “We are thrilled that the Grollo Group will take over the operation of Bogong Village. Our core business is providing reliable renewable hydroelectricity to the Victorian grid and providing critical flexibility support for the electricity system during peak demand periods,” he said. “This is a fantastic outcome for the local community and tourism in the region with plans to redevelop the village, provide key worker accommodation for Falls Creek, and open the tavern once more for visitors to the area.”

The beauty of Bogong Village in autumn can never be doubted – and the rest of the year is equally as attractive. Pic – Courtesy AGL Media

Alpine Resorts Victoria CEO, Amber Gardner, said “There is a significant need for appropriate key worker accommodation across the alpine region, particularly as the resorts continue to grow and greater numbers of staff are required to deliver a high-quality visitor experience,” she said.

recreation facilities, a tavern, and the Outdoor School, Bogong. The outdoor school is owned and operated by the Victorian Department of Education and will continue to provide outdoor learning programs for Years P-12 from government schools across Victoria.

“This new acquisition by Grollo represents an exciting step forward in resolving the accommodation challenges at Falls Creek, so we’re looking forward to working with them to realise this important activation.”

AGL acquired the village as part of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme when it was purchased in 2005.

Bogong Village was built in the 1940s for workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The village is approximately 9 hectares in size, and comprises 27 houses,

In 2009 AGL opened the Bogong Power Station next to Bogong Village – adding to the other power stations in the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme – Mackay Creek, Clover, and West Kiewa Power Stations. AGL will continue to own and operate the Bogong Power Station as part of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. •

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2024 Edition TWO

PREPARING FOR SUMMER Obtain Advice

A

s spring temperatures heat up and we watch fires breaking out in NSW and Queensland, it’s time for Upper Kiewa Valley residents to start preparing for our local bushfire season. It’s easy to believe that after two years of La Nina and our valley looking so green, that we can put our preparations on the back burner for a while. Unfortunately, this is not true. People attending the Community Bushfire Resilience Picnic this Saturday, November 4, will be reminded that preparing early helps not only you, but all the emergency services that turn out when a fire starts. The picnic will feature first-hand information on how to prepare for the first 72 hours during any emergency provided by Alpine Shire, home fire safety demonstrations by the CFA, an Ambulance Victoria “Push, Shock Demonstration”, and the DEECA always popular fire table. The picnic is, as usual, being organised by the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood House Keep Calm Committee (KCC). It’s important to remember that the CFA’s first Fire Danger Period (FDP) that was announced for Monday, 9 October for the Wellington and East Gippsland Shire Councils was one of the earliest FDPs the CFA has ever announced. When the FDP was announced CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan reminded Victoria that while crews are ready to respond and support communities this bushfire season, fire safety is a shared responsibility and he asked Victorians to prepare early and know their local risks. Important information will also be provided by the Alpine Shire emergency recovery

PREPARE FOR SUMMER Pool Chemicals & we can test your pool water! Garden watering gear – drip systems, hoses, sprinklers! Seedling, plants for the garden & vege patch! team members talking about the First 72 Hours Plan which provides easy and quick guidelines on how to manage and reduce stress when confronted by any emergency including fires and floods. Local Ambulance Victoria members will give a Call, Push, Shock demonstration which tells us how to best assist family or friends suffering from a heart attack. According to Ambulance Victoria, on average, only 10 per cent of people with an ‘out of hospital’ cardiac arrest will survive. However, when bystanders intervene by calling 000, beginning CPR by using the Call, Push Shock strategy, or using a defibrillator (AED), the chance of survival is increased by 72 per cent. Older community members who worry about possible heatwaves will also get information about the Heatwave Relief project being organised by three community organisations - the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre, Mount Beauty Men’s Shed and Alpine U3A – to provide cool spaces, entertainment and light refreshments to our senior citizens who struggle to get through hot days. The Resilience Picnic features the Alpine Shire Council; Ambulance Victoria; Australian Red Cross; the CFA; the State Government Energy, Environment & Climate Action Group; The First 72 Hours;

esidents of the Upper Kiewa Valley are now able (from Wednesday 1st November) to ‘cash in’ their eligible drink containers with our team at Settlers Tavern announced as a Container Deposit Scheme (CDS)Victoria refund point. “We are excited to be a part of Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme and help make recycling more convenient and accessible for our community,” said Ange Bell, proprietor of Settlers Tavern. “We believe this is a great way to increase recycling and reward the local community.” The over-the-counter operator will be located in the Thirsty Camel Bottleshop. The community can bring their eligible drink containers to the drive-in bottleshop

and receive a refund of 10 cents per container. The refund can be redeemed in cash, via an electronic transfer or as a donation to a charity. “By working with businesses like Settlers, we’ll be able to reward the Upper Kiewa Valley community for every eligible drink can, carton and bottle they return,” said Tim O’Donnell, Visy General Manager of the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme.

Sales Sizzle in Tawonga Sth

I

n the picturesque town of Tawonga South, real estate is thriving and recent sales have showcased the area's allure for potential buyers. Gemma Lutz, a prominent real estate agent at Mountain Creek Property, has achieved remarkable success with two recent property sales, 283 Simmonds Creek Rd and 8 Allamar Court. What makes these sales truly exceptional is that both properties were not only sold within a week of hitting the market but also fetched prices well above their initial asking price, highlighting the robustness of the local real estate market. Tawonga South has emerged as a popular destination for property purchasers, and these recent sales reflect the area's desirability. Gemma Lutz expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "These two property sales provide compelling evidence that the property market in Tawonga South remains resilient. With effective presentation and a skilled agent, we consistently attract substantial interest from buyers. Achieving such favourable results for all parties involved is truly gratifying."
