2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

Resilience in a time of Chaos

Round One - Falls Creek

TCommunity Support

The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.

he closure of season 2020 was extremely challenging, disheartening, demoralising and frankly (insert your own favourite pejorative) devastating with respect to its impact on so many lives, livelihoods and wellbeing.

Which is why, writing this during Lockdown Seven feels so much like ‘Groundhog Day’ and not in a good way.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.

So instead of our usually constructive column, we thought providing some resources to help with assistance that is available both to businesses and to individuals in this time might be a helpful way in working through some options.

The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

Whilst this isn’t exhaustive by any means, there are opportunities to find funding assistance for your business, or seek out help in talking with someone to assist in dealing with the anxiety, frustration and exhaustion.

Resort Entry Permits

More than ever, this is the time that we need to look to one another for support, and please don’t be afraid to ask for help. Help can include calling a friend or checking in on a neighbour or seasonal staff who are away from families, who we know will be isolated. We live in a digital age, yet this often doesn't ease the burden of lockdown. Falls Creek is more than just an alpine resort, it’s a community of incredibly dedicated individuals who care.

Free confidential specialist mental health support is available to you on the mountain at Falls Creek. No referral needed.

We are very lucky to have access to Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) Rural Outreach Service, so please share Darren’s number with your friends, family and colleagues, and also don’t be afraid to give him a call yourself, or access the 24/7 Outreach Triage number.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Business Support

Alpine Resorts Winter Support Program Assists businesses in Victoria's alpine resorts and surrounding towns who have been most impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions between May and August 2021.

Small Business COVID Hardship Fund

An additional allocation of $72 million will boost the Small Business COVID Hardship Fund to $252 million, with grants increasing from $10,000 to $14,000 and available to small and medium sized businesses across the state.

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

The fund opened for applications on 12 August 2021 through the Business Victoria website and will help up to 18,000 businesses that have been ineligible for business support programs and have experienced a reduction in revenue of at least 70 per cent.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS

Mohair or Wax

Not much happening xc wise at Falls Creek this week, new snow on Monday has given the trails a nice refresh.

With no skiing to report I thought I would let you know about the latest tech in cross country ski equipment.

Most top ski brands now offer a “mohair” waxless ski option. Instead of struggling with grip wax in Australia’s notoriously difficult waxing conditions or using underperforming fish scales, mohair has found its way back onto the bases of high performing xc skis.

Similar to the ‘skins’ used in in back country skiing and those used for centuries in Scandinavia, new generation mohair can provide great grip and glide in our variable snow.

Those readers who are old enough will remember when mohair had a short and unsuccessful career as a waxless option, it would ice up, be slow and wore out quickly so was soon discontinued.

A couple of years ago with new technology, mohair was reintroduced, this time with much greater success. The Norwegian ski company Madshus also uses an ‘on the fly’ movable ski binding which expands the performance range of mohair.

In the attached photo you will see the mohair on the base, but the binding has a large red MOVE button that moves the binding forward and back without removing the ski. This allows adjustability to either increase grip for steep uphills or when the snow is slippery or move the binding back for more speed on downhills or when skiing on grippier snow. I have been on this ski all season and been really enjoying it performance. It has the same solid, instant engagement kick as a waxed ski, is fairly fast and only has minimal noise when going downhill. It will never be as good a well waxed ski, but for the 75% of the time when waxing is a challenge or when you are short on time and just want

and the

to get out on the snow these are a fantastic option. The only caveat is to make sure the ski is the proper flex for your weight and skiing style.

Falls Creek Cross Country at Windy Corner has several mohair skis available for demo, so when we reopen why not drop by to check them out or just drop in to say G’day and get a waxing recommendation. • Andrew Hall

• Thanks to the small team of local Birkies on the race committee who are prepared to get a race up and going for those still able to attend. Unfortunately it was not to be and Victorian Covid lockdown was implemented from 1pm on Saturday afternoon, the day before.

• Thanks also to the 33 entrants we had up until Friday night for your support!!

• Thanks to Meg Crebbin who came up with a fantastic poster this year.

• Thanks to Geoff Sorenson for the planning to get the course prepared for the day.

• Also thanks to Michal Trnka of Alpine Timing for all his work on the entry side of things, generating certificates and also for getting information to participants and also for fielding lots of enquires and the occasional criticism.

• Also many thanks to Snow, Trek and Travel who were once again prepared to sponsor the event, even though last year and this year have not been great for snow related businesses.

Maybe we can finally get something going in 2022!! •

‘Twas

the night before Hoppet…

To borrow from the poem by Clement Clarke Moore that was first published in 1823 in a New York newspaper

called The Sentinel… ‘Twas the night before Hoppet and all over the house… everyone was still up eating and drinking and watching TV because there was no need to get up early - to race up the hill and get a good parking spot at Windy Corner for the Hoppet.

But… all is not lost!

Way back in February the organisers decided to again offer a virtual Hoppet so that overseas skiers could keep up their involvement with the event despite being locked out of the country.

Now, with the rest of us either locked down or locked out, the Virtual Hoppet has become the event of last recourse. The rules are pretty simple... go online to www. hoppet.com.au and hand over your $10 and commit to carrying out some form of physical activity over a 42, 21 or 7km route of your choice. Not only will you have your participation recorded for posterity in the online Hoppet results list, but you will also receive a beautiful buff style neckwarmer/ balaclava/beanie/facemask in the mail.

Online entries for the virtual Hoppet do not close until midnight Sunday so there is still time to enter. If you cannot manage the distance in your allotted exercise time, it is acceptable to spread your activity across a day or two or whatever. But please remember to upload your results by the end of next week.

Entries have been received from 26 countries and all Australian states and mainland territories. The oldest is Jiri Baros from Valascke Mezinci in the Czech Republic

After holding our Bogong Village Transition Forums last month, we heard a lot of stories, opinions, and thoughts on the role that Bogong Village will play in the next chapter of its life. It was moving to hear about our community’s connection to this place, and it clearly holds a special place in a lot of our hearts.

We recognise that, and we have heard the community. The feedback was clear, there needs to be a life and soul in Bogong Village throughout the transition period whilst we continue our discussions with potential new operators.

AGL is currently working hard on some near-term and long-terms options to address these very valid concerns. It won’t be in a commercial capacity - we have always maintained that as an energy company, we’re not in the holiday accommodation business – but we hope this goes some way to reintroduce some vibrancy in the village and potentially help relieve the rental market stresses that are having an impact on our community.

FALL LINES

Mount Beauty Raw Water Offtake Project

Due to the latest lockdown, North East Water has postponed its planned community drop-in sessions regarding the Mount Beauty Raw Water Offtake Project.

The Corporation was planning to meet with community member on Monday and Tuesday and is now looking at rescheduling the sessions at a later date or try a different format if the lockdown continues on for a lengthy period.

New water infrastructure is to be built on the east bank of the West Kiewa River, downstream of the Pondage spillway on Embankment Drive.

This new ‘offtake’ will allow water from the Kiewa River to be pumped to the Mount Beauty treatment plant in Tawonga South before it is returned back into the community as drinking water.

More detail on the project can be found at www.newater.com.au/mtbeauty. It includes a link to an online survey, as well as an updated FAQ sheet based on the further questions asked by the community over the past few weeks. •
