TThe Victorian Government has invested $32.8 million statewide to proactively reduce the risk of landslips on key tourist routes as part of the $124 million Building Works package. Works on Bogong-High Plains Road commenced in March 2021 and will pause during winter to minimise impact to resort traffic, recommencing at the end of the 2021 winter.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
Works also began in February 2021 at Bright-Tawonga Road, with the drainage upgrades and road reconstruction now completed, with final pavement sealing to occur after winter.
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
Landslip prevention works funded under this package will also be undertaken on key roads in North Eastern Victoria, including Bogong-High Plains Road, Bright-Tawonga Road, Mount Buller Road, Mount Stirling Road and the Great Alpine Road. So far, work in the Falls Creek area has
included more than 20 roadside drainage systems replaced and installing new extensive underground drainage systems at five high-risk sites to improve drainage and help prevent landslips.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage.
This project will help ensure vital north east Victorian roads remain safe and reliable for the thousands of people who travel them every year.

After an extremely tough winter last year, the thought of having a landslip close the road for a week (as has happened) would not be good. Even an 18 hour closure caused by a slip is hugely problematical. The good news is that there will not be any roadworks during winter (unless urgent) and that the surfacing of the Tawonga Gap Road will be done after winter.
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

As I write the first edition of the Weekly for 2021, the clatter of snow chains and the scrape of heavy machinery blades clearing the snow off Bogong High Plains Road is as exciting as welcoming everyone back to Falls Creek… Australia’s premier alpine village.
The resort and all its stakeholders are in readiness to host this year’s snow season, with everyone eager to see the season kick off, lifts start turning and getting people back on snow and into the village venues.
A bonus for the start of this season is a tremendous base of both natural and made man snow that sets up the next 17 weeks of the season. The natural snowfalls have also created the winter wonderland which is so characteristic of the Falls Creek village and makes for an incomparable village experience.
Every season, safety and risk management are priorities. These rank equally with the priority of making sure the experiences and memories our guests have whilst at the resort are indelible, leaving everyone who visits with the desire to return.
The last 15 month have reinforced not just priorities around safety and hygiene, but also the social responsibility we all must exhibit to ensure the collective safety of our snow loving community.
The power to take control and diminish the chances of further restrictions being imposed because of COVID-19 outbreaks means that all resort stakeholders, community members, visitors and guests must abide by the requirements as stipulated by the Chief Health Officer.
By being compliant and undertaking the necessary QR code check-ins, by registering prior to coming to the resort, by apply good
personal hygiene and spatial awareness, and following all the measures to protect ourselves, we collectively suppress the likelihood of negative consequences.
With the anticipation of the season running high, I will reiterate my comments from last season, about the need for the 4 P’s.
• Planning (and preparing).
• Pre booking (everything).
• Print outs (confirmation of resort entry, ATS… this helps contactless transitions through the resort). …And most of all;
• Patience!
This year the resort is operating under its COVIDSafe protocols and there will be compliance and enforcement officers from the Department of Health in resort, along with Victoria Police, checking in on premises and patrons to ensure venues and the patrons are abiding by these protocols.
Just like last year, all these extra measures are being done for your safety, not inconvenience.
The most positive news is that capacity of the resort is not limited this year, with no restrictions applied to the number of people able to visit the resort, the only capacity constraint is the ability of the resort to park vehicles safety.
Tip no. 1 for Season 2021 – get to the resort early to avoid the disappointment of either a long walk to the lift, or in worst case, the resort reaching its safety capacity and having to shut for the day, due to no more parking availability.
Whilst this opening weekend will be tempered by not seeing everyone at resort who wants to be here, we have delayed formally celebrating the season opening (i.e fireworks and fanfare) until we can share that with everyone.
Nonetheless – be safe out there and let Season 2021 begin. •

Falls Creek CFA are ready for the 2021 snow season. With 23 operational firefighters, well versed in structural fire attack, the operation of over-snow firefighting appliances and navigating the many challenges of our Alpine environment.
The relationship our brigade has with the Falls Creek community is key to a fire safe season for all. We are here to support residents, businesses and visitors to Falls Creek to manage their fire risk.
We will continue to visit premises to plan our emergency response. In doing this, we hope to engage with owners, managers and staff about what actions they can take to prevent the occurrence of fire and also plan for what actions they will take in the event of a fire.
Some actions you can take to prevent the occurrence of fire and also limit the impact of fire include:
• Good house-keeping practices,
• Maintaining fire safety systems,
• Developing, communicating and practicing evacuation plans.
Our mission is to protect lives and property. Early detection and notification of fire
will save lives. Fires start small and escalate quickly. It takes approximately eight minutes from the ignition of a fire, for a room to become fully involved in fire. Therefore, the best way to save lives from fire is quick and safe evacuation to a nominated location.
A complexity of evacuating a premise during winter in an Alpine environment is exposure to extreme weather. Evacuation may even be required in the middle of the night, when those evacuated are likely to be clothed in what they have worn to bed - highlighting the importance of the quick, safe evacuation of occupants to an evacuation point in a neighbouring structure - where those evacuated are safe, have shelter and warmth. This also highlights the importance of connecting and co-operating with your neighbours before the event. Having reciprocal arrangements to evacuate into adjacent structures or premises is vital.
When arriving at an incident, if CFA crews are met and provided essential information such as: that all persons are accounted for; the location of the fire; the best access and any known hazards. The crews can quickly take actions to both - limit fire spread, and damage to the property - demonstrating the importance of your local knowledge and assistance.
When arriving at a fire, CFA crews will also need to source a water supply. Another challenge of the Alpine environment is fire hydrants becoming covered in snow. You
can help by routinely clearing the snow from around hydrants - ensuring safe and quick access to hydrants and fire-fighting water supply. Early and effective fire attack is key to limiting fire spread and damage. Watching a firefighter spend crucial time clearing access to a fire hydrant, rather than fighting the fire, is not a lesson anyone wants to learn in hindsight. Your help is needed before the event.

The Mount Beauty and District Community Bank Running Festival was held on 15th May at the Les Peart Oval after a year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions and attracted athletes from as far afield as Canberra, Gippsland and the Surf Coast.
Over 200 runners took part in the 3km, 10km, 21km road runs and new 14km trail run. The event organisers set up the event in the cold rain on Saturday morning, however by the time the events started runners were treated to sunshine and wonderful views of fresh snow on majestic Mt Bogong that stands sentinel over the upper Kiewa Valley.
Competition was tight in many of the events with all participants enjoying the courses and refreshments and atmosphere at the finish. Bernadette Benson (1hr 38mins 53sec) and Simon Bevage (1:11:54) took out the premier 21km that was an out and back course on the hilly Mountain Creek Road. Victory in the 10km event went to Rosie Donegan (37:50) and local running prodigy Alec Franzke (35:10). Alec followed up his amazing 3rd place in the Nail Can Hill Run on May 2nd with a runaway performance in Mount Beauty. He, and his younger brother Eddy, create a lot of excitement amongst everyone who sees them run! The 3km event was won by Morgan Blake (11:54) and local runner Hannah Gray (14:36). Hannah is one of the top young cross-country skiers in Australia and will be looking forward to a season of skiing after a strong showing.
This year a new 14km trail run was a new offering and was keenly anticipated by regional runners. The course was a true trail run with two river crossings to keep runners on their toes, even if they ended up very wet
toes. Victory in the muddy event went to local all-round-super athlete Tory Thomas (1:06:43) and Michael Moore (1:04:22), only a few seconds ahead of young Albury runner Jonathon Gillard who is showing that he is following in the footsteps of his father, Damian!
The event was sponsored by the Mount Beauty and District Community Bank and the event organisers and all participants are really grateful that a local business can get behind a local event to ensure that it is staged in a safe and professional manner. The support for the event extends well beyond just staging the event with the health and social benefits of events like this providing a vital link in our recovery from the recent disruptions. The event was also supported by the Alpine Shire Council with a grant to assist with the traffic management on the course, which is very much appreciated as there are so many costs to making sure events are successful.
The Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, Mount Beauty Men’s Shed and Mount Beauty Secondary College also provided much needed support for the event. And, providing a delicious array of cakes at the finish line was the Mount Beauty Playgroup who always gets behind our local event.
It was wonderful to see so many people together after the year of separation in 2020. The atmosphere and local and running communities are a great way to connect with active people in our area.
The Mount Beauty Running Festival event is part of the Alpine Valleys Trifecta of half marathons. The next event in the series is the spectacular Harrietville Half Marathon in early October.

Mount Beauty Toy Library has some new toys including a fire truck trike bike, a Hape wooden rocket ship and some musical wooden puzzles! Justin comes to the Frying Pan with a wealth of experience both overseas at Ski Resorts in Canada and Japan, as well as back in Australia at some of the top restaurants in Sydney including Icebergs Bondi, Adriana Zumbo Patisserie and Peter Doyle’s Est.
It was during his school years Justin
truly recognised his love of cooking, and in particular his love of pastries and slow cooked meats. After completing his apprenticeship as a pastry chef and sourdough baker, he had the opportunity to work under some of the best Australian and International chefs. It was during this time that Justin expanded his skills moving into Fine Dining Restaurants.
This year at the Frying Pan, Justin is excited to experiment with the Frying Pan’s fire grill. His tip for the New 2021 winter menu is “anything and everything from the grill!”

• Replace your wiper blades and keep your washer bottle full. Trying to rid your windscreen of ice with your wipers will only damage the blades.

Alpine Shire Council has welcomed the Victorian Government’s $32.2 million Regional Tourism Support Package, which includes regional travel vouchers and financial assistance for tourism businesses.
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.
Aimed at boosting tourism recovery across regional Victoria, the package will provide accommodation, attraction and experience providers with grant top-ups worth up to $4,500 per business, while alpine businesses will receive up to $15,000 to help them provide a COVIDSafe ski season.
Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.
80,000 travel vouchers valued at $200 each will be available for Victorians to spend regionally – 10,000 new vouchers and 70,000 vouchers allocated through previous rounds but not claimed.

Alpine Shire Mayor John Forsyth said many local businesses rely on visitors as their main source of income, and have been hard hit by the current COVID-19 restrictions.
“A snap seven-day lockdown is difficult for everyone, but even more so for those businesses who had to close their doors completely,” he said.
“With Melbourne is still in lockdown we are keen to welcome more regional visitors who may not have travelled to the Alpine Shire at this time of year before.”
The Regional Tourism Support Package will support eligible Victorian tourism businesses with grant top-ups for the current Business Costs Assistance Program, which means eligible tourism businesses will receive a payment of $7,000.
A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. Friends are welcome to pass this invite on and it is understood that members of Lyn’s family will be in attendance. •

This publication has run similar articles before. And we will probably continue to run them each year. Your editor would hate to think that someone working or visiting this fabulous resort of ours ends up with a three or four thousand dollar bill for transport to hospital. It can and does happen – and it can be prevented. Read on.
Previously we have quoted figures for this article. But, even without them, the common sense aspect of ambulance insurance is a ‘no-brainer.’
As an example of costs, just from your editor’s experience, is like this. Thirty five years ago, the cost per hour of a simple Lama Helicopter to swing lift towers in to place was $1000 per hour – without the fuel component. To run a modern, fully equipped, fully fitted out Augusta Westland AW 139, complete with highly trained pilots and paramedics around the countryside is not a cheap exercise. Think about it!!

A clever and innovative local lodge manager, as part of his employment contract would include an Ambulance Membership Form – which (unless they could show they were already covered) the employees had to sign – and the payment came out of their first wage cheque. This would be regarded in most circles as excellent management/staff relations.
The following is an excellent example of the benefits of membership – as quoted by Angus.
“I got ambulance cover just before heading off with my mates on a snowboarding trip to Mt Buller. I had been thinking about cover and thought I’d be unlikely to need it but had a few minutes free so opened my laptop and joined online in the car park of the campsite. It took me five minutes and was really easy and really cheap - especially compared to the other ski field costs. We had a great weekend but my trip ended abruptly when I ran out of talent, came off a jump and broke three ribs and collapsed a lung.
I ended up in an Air Ambulance to the Royal Melbourne. The trip in the air ambulance would have cost me $7,500 but I didn’t even see a bill. I could have had two lifetimes worth of cover and still been ahead.
A copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Environment, Land Use and Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was left for this community in the care of Mr Bill Sutton. Bill was happy to lend the book and until now it was always returned – until this last 18 months. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt someone’s memory.
