In our own unique and individual ways, the communities of Mount Beauty, Tawonga South and Tawonga – showed just how much we appreciate the efforts of all of our countrymen and women who have gone to war ‘for us!’ It is a sincere mark of respect for all who served and for those that did not make it home.
While last year saw Barry Flynn do his lone piper, this year he was joined by the marchers and a wonderful crowd - all gathered to support and remember our service men and women from many conflicts
Guest speaker was Captain Debra Johnson from ALTV Bandiana and our two secondary school captains, Isaac Pronk and Claire Bowring gave a speech on what ANZAC means to the younger folk.
A great big thanks to everyone who supported and was involved in the day. And to take our minds back to the original ANZACs, a poem by one of Australia’s best.

There are many factors that contribute to a great event. When the event is outside – on the Bogong High Plains – and takes many hours to complete – then the weather is one of the most important – and two weekends back –the weather was superb for the 2020 Alpine Challenge (run in 2021).
Considered one of Australia’s hardest 100 mile runs and a qualifier for the infamous Hardrock 100, The Alpine Challenge created by Running Wild’s race director Paul Ashton has runners accumulating over 7000m/22,965ft of elevation over the 100 miles. The course takes runners up and down some of Victoria’s highest mountains, such as; Mt Bogong, Mt Feathertop, Mt Loch and Mt McKay to name a few. From some easy running along fire trails to some painfully slow shuffling/walking up some technical single track, the course keeps runners on their toes.

Thomas placed 8th out of the 38 100 mile runners in a time of 26:53:01.
The overall winner of the 100 miles was Matthew Crehan (Bib 160 – 14) in a time of 22:26:21.3, breaking the previous course record by some 40 minutes. Second place in the 100 mile was Matthew Dunn (Bib 160 – 20) in a time of 23:38:52.6 followed by Damian Espinase-Nandorfy (Bib 160 – 22) in a time of 24:07:45.7
First Lady home in the 100 mile was Millerine Brikker (Bib 160 – 02) in a time of 31:50:00.6 followed by Pia O’Connor (Bib 160 – 34) on 35:26:12.3.
A couple of locals deserve a heap of credit for getting out and having a red-hot go. Ben McKechnie (Bib 60 – 14) did the 60 km and a time of 12:10:13.7 even after cramping pretty severely late in the event.

Ben is well known for his involvement in Last Hoot and also The Old Factory in Myrtleford.
Margy Jansen (from the finance team at FCRM) took part in the 42km event (Bib 41 – 14) and, after a little detour, finished in a time of 6:40:44.0.
Fred Weir (Maintenance crew at FCRM) also did the 42 km (Bib42 – 34) and finished in a great time of 4:31:02.8.

Another factor that contributes to the success of any event is the number of fabulous volunteers and the efforts they put in over many hours to ensure the safety of the competitors. Not the least among these volunteers are the Alpine Search and Rescue Squad who bring the radios and

gear and camp out on the high plains for the duration of the event. Their efforts are greatly appreciated and the organisers have tipped around $5000 into their coffers to support their purchase of new equipment. For a little while there, it was looking touch and go. The COVID problems seem to have eased enough for this year’s Trade Fair @ Falls Creek to go ahead – this year in the QT complex on the Bogong High Plains Road/Slalom Plaza.
The concept of putting a 600 square metre Hoecker Marquee on the car-park is compromised by cost and the management at QT are being very supportive of the event and co-operative with the staging of this regular feature on the annual Falls Creek calendar. Therefore the Trade Fair @ Falls Creek will go ahead next Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th May at QT. Times are: Tuesday 4th 9:30am – 5:30pm. Wednesday 5th 9:30am – 4pm.
The advent of the internet has changed the way many people do their shopping - much of it impulse buying. Oh sure, it opens up the suppliers’ market – giving many more people a look at the product – but does it really benefit the consumer?

Sure, we can use the internet to research, but then we need to see, feel, touch, smell and/or taste the product. And if it is equipment we are buying it would probably be smart to enjoy a comprehensive demonstration.
Falls Creek has a well-deserved reputation as a ‘foodies’ mountain with quite a few excellent restaurants in the village and in the off-mountain town of Mount BeautyTawonga-Tawonga South. To continue to ‘grow’ this reputation, everything we do needs to be a little bit of an improvement on last year –because if we don’t improve, then the others are going past us!
This ranges from the quality of the staff and how we manage them to the range of products we have available and how well we present that product.
Then there is the presentation and cleanliness of the premises - from the entrance to the amenities. New guests are casting a discerning eye over everything as they cruise in – and if the joint doesn’t stack up, the rest of the visit is not going to be as easy.
And, of course price is a major consideration when buying stock, hardware, product or equipment. But, the old adage continues to ring true “You get what you pay for!” Buying quality product or produce ninety nine percent of the time means you will have less hassles and or hiccups – and as we all know, some of those hiccups come at the most inappropriate times.
The Trade Fair @ Falls Creek began as the Falls Creek Expo and Trade Fair back in 1982 with 15 exhibiting companies displaying their wares at the Frying Pan Inn. The recognition that the Trade Fair was a needed event saw it grow to 110 companies in a 1200 square metre Hoecker (tent) on the Gully car park in 1992.
Changes in management saw changes in the operation – to the point where it was moved away from Falls Creek and subsequently saw a decline in visitation. We are now back in Falls Creek and this year will see around 30 quality suppliers to the industry attending.

THE Alpine Shire TAC L2P Program is the recent recipient of two new vehicles, thanks to generous sponsorship from the Bright and Myrtleford Community Bank and the Rot6aty Club of Myrtleford.
This upgrade to Toyota Corolla Hybrids is in line with directives from the Department of Transport to ensure that the vehicles used in the program meet current safety standards.
Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016.
The TAC L2P Program is administered by the Department of Transport and assists young learner drivers in Victoria between the ages of 16-21 to gain driving experience and work towards achieving their required 120 hours.
On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?
Eligible learner drivers are matched with volunteer mentors, who work with young people to accrue their required hours. Volunteer mentors act as positive role models for learner drivers, as well as providing greater access to future education and employment opportunities.
Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
Manager Economic and Community Development Elaine Burridge confirmed the value of the TAC L2P Program in the Alpine Shire.
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.
MR: How did you get into riding?
“Mobility is a key priority for many of our young people and the TAC L2P Program removes some of the barriers our young people face when going for their licence,” she said.

Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. • Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on all batteries. Make sure yours is in good nick. Replace your wiper blades and keep your washer bottle full. Trying to rid your windscreen of ice with your wipers will only damage the blades. Check the condition of your tyres – or even consider getting winter tyres- more grip in slippery conditions.
• Make sure your tire pressure is exactly what it should be.
• Check your wheel chains and ensure that you know how to fit them correctly. Too many problems are caused by people not knowing how to fit chains correctly!

It’s really nice to be able to afford to feed your dog a ‘species-appropriate’ raw or lightly cooked diet which includes human grade meats, offal, vegetables and some other healthy additions. But this is not always affordable or convenient for everyone.
Most kibble has some rather unhealthy ingredients - such as 4D meats, cow eartags from abattoir bins and polyurethaneboxed dead veges from supermarket waste as well as cheap ingredients like corn potato and peas. These kibbles have also been analysed to contain between 40% and 50% sugar! Studies have shown a big increase in cancer in dogs since kibble had been on the market. HOWEVER. If you must feed kibble (no judgement here) there are some things that you can add to make it much more nutritious. Items such as: sardines in water (no salt) and a cooked egg every couple of days. Some cooked vegetables from your meals: pumpkin, sweet potato, parsley and kale are good choices. No onion! Cooked veges are better as the dogs’ short bowel means nutrient uptake is better. Add some cartilage or appropriate size RAW bone for teeth cleaning and you have a pretty good diet!
Some nice additions that I feed my dogs are coconut oil kefir and turmeric - small amounts. If you change your dog’s diet you
MUST do it very gradually so as not to upset the gut. Often changing to a better diet can resolve behavioural issues and things like allergies. Good luck! •

Self-care can come in many forms - exercise, good nutrition, breathwork, talking to a friend on the phone, reflection, walking the dog, crafts, getting your home organised, de-cluttering a room, planting a garden… Whatever it is that makes you feel lighter, happier, calmer, balanced and/or focused, try to make time for this, for you, as an individual.

This town is about to come alive to a Bush Dance in the Mount Beauty Community Hall which will be filled with laughter, fun and music. Conrad’s seven-piece band, ‘Squidjig,’ will teach us the moves and bring out that inner dancer in us all until we look like Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers… Really!
Tables of eight will be set up around the hall and there’ll be food and drinks available from the bar.

This paper is pretty sure that just about everyone is aware that May is the Salvation Army Red Shield Month – the time when many volunteers get out and about to collect for Red Shield. Locally is it usually the members of the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty who base themselves around the shopping areas of the local home footy matches rattling a tin.
Over the years the members would like to thank everyone who has made any form of donation – each and every one being appreciated.
Last year was aa totally different ball game – but some tins were placed out and around which raised some money and the Rotary Club topped it up to make a decent donation to the Salvos.
This year, as a result of the tough year we have experienced in this area, the local Salvation Army co-oordinator, Captain Pauline Middleton is hoping to direct funds raised in this area to a worthy project in this area. It is therefore hoped that when you see a Salvation Army collector in the area, please consider your support and give generously. •
