Falls Creek Alpine Resort hosted the first round of the Victorian Gravity Enduro Series and the first Enduro World Series Qualifier globally of 2021 over the weekend of Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th February. With a sold-out field of 250 riders competing across six stages it was an eagerly anticipated return to racing for the Victorian MTB calendar. Leading into the event the weather looked grim with a huge storm cycle rolling through the peaks of the High Plains the day before practice. With over 80mm of rain being delivered organisers were understandably nervous!
Despite receiving record amounts of rainfall the trails held up remarkably well with all racers getting out on track to practice a rapidly changing course by Saturday morning and the Blue Dirt Shuttle service in full swing. Talk amongst the riders was the introduction of a new village Urban stage taking place on Saturday evening. This new stage saw racers heading from the Summit of the resort to the heart of the village via stairs, jumps and a pretty scary looking rock garden! At the close of Saturday, the Elite field saw Connor Fearon establish his dominance over local rider Ben McIlroy in the men’s competition with Rachel Hore also putting a solid lead into local Georgina von Marburg.
Sunday saw the resort wake to sunnier skies and rapidly drying trails. With the tracks being in completely different shape to practice, new lines and rocks were appearing throughout the day. This rewarded the most experienced bike handlers that could keep it steady and react to the changeable

conditions. Ben McIlroy’s opening salvo took two seconds into Connors lead on Fall’s most hectic trail, Big Fella. However, Connor continued to extend his advantage throughout the day showing his physical strength on some of the more demanding stages. In the women’s race Rachel Hore’s lead was unassailable as she took a win on every stage except one. The battle between 3rd and 2nd heated up though with Georgina von Marburg and Lia Ladbrook changing places throughout the day. Eventually Georgina’s experience won through and Lia had to settle for 3rd.
Falls Creek Event Supervisor Nick Buckley said “Despite the best efforts of Mother Nature the Falls Creek round of the Vic Enduro Tour went off seamlessly. The course and operations team at the Resort put in a huge effort to keep the trails running smoothly all weekend even with the significant rainfall we experienced. All the racers were clearly excited to get back racing again and thanks to the incredible efforts of our on-mountain stakeholders we could put on a real show for them with our new urban stage bringing riders right through the village.”
Nick continued that the summer at Falls Creek is only just starting “The Enduro tour is just the first of many MTB events we have planned for the late summer here at Falls Creek. We’ve our XC triple header weekend approaching on Fri 26th – Sun 28th. This not only features the Victorian State XC Championships but also includes the regional MTB schools race suitable for all ages AND our new long distance XC race on Sunday which takes in all the best trails the resort has to offer.”

Entries are still available for all XC mountain bike races this weekend, for more details head to Fallscreek.com.au. •

Between last summer’s devastating bushfires and the restrictions forced upon us by the COVID-19 crisis, Falls Creek and Bicycle Network were able to successfully stage the twelfth running the fantastic, yet gruelling Peaks Challenge Falls Creek.
While numbers were down last year (because of the fires), this year it currently looks like we will have a record field of close to 2000 riders.
The Peaks Challenge Falls Creek is the traditional route. Falls Creek to Mount Beauty; over the Tawonga Gap to Germantown, turn left and head down to Harrietville, then hit the climb up Mt Hotham. From here it is down to Dinner Plain (for a possible rest), then continue down the Great Alpine Road through Cobungra, up past the Kosciusko Lookout and down into Omeo (for, as Larry said “A pie and a pint of milk). Then it’s north along the Omeo Highway, past Anglers Rest and continue to Shannonvale. The left turn here and the first look at the climb to come produces a range of interesting comments – and it’s not called ‘WTF’ corner for nothing. The gradient here is about 10% for the next 8km- then you sort of settle in to the coolness of the high plains and about 23km of solid riding to get back to Falls Creek in under 13 hours. The fastest time last year was 7 hours and 39 minutes – pretty impressive for a 235km ride in somewhat ordinary weather.
The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred.
New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.
Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’
A new feature for this year’s event is the 100km ‘Out the Back’ ride which starts in Falls Creek at 9am and the riders head out across the high plains, down past Trapyard Gap to Shannonvale and then along to Anglers Rest before returning along the same route and enjoying the great climb from WTF corner and back to Falls Creek.
ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.

• The impacted area is around shady gully and towards Cranky Charlie (below the Big Hill Road). Refer to the attached map. The indicated area on the attached map does not always represent the planned coverage area.
• Preparation works (including tree felling and raking) will start shortly and will be undertaken between 9am to 5pm. Tracks will be closed as needed with signage and taping.
• Planned burn will likely take one day and be undertaken in Autumn (expected to be late April). The area may remain closed for several more days to ensure the area is safe for our use. We will communicate more information closer to the burn.

Mount Beauty Service
• Forest Fire Management Victoria is working with Team Mount Beauty to minimise the impact to the MTB park.

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.
• Please ensure you comply with the track closures for your own safety, and for the safety of the staff undertaking the fuel management program.
The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.
Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) will be conducting a fuel management program in the Big Hill MTB Park in the coming months. The program reduces the risk of bushfire to people, property and the environment. Fuel management can include works such as planned burning, clearing works and constructing fire breaks. All of these works help to reduce the fuel (ie. flammable vegetation) load, which reduces the risk of a bushfire. If a bushfire does occur in an area
The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion of Loyalty will be offered by Councillor Tony Keeble of the Alpine Shire. Prayers will be led by Sister Eileen Reardon of the Catholic Church and the Guest Speaker on the day will be Flight L Richard Cornell ALTC Bandiana..

The address for the day will be offered by students from the Mount Beauty Secondary College. Speakers will be school captains, Katerina Trnka and Connor Vickers. At our local service, wreaths will be laid by many community representatives and members of the public are invited to do so if they wish.
FFM Vic recognises and acknowledges that there are multiple assets and infrastructure within the proposed burn area and are eager to protect these during the preparation and delivery of the burn. FFM Vic will also be undertaking hazardous tree works throughout the burn area. This is to ensure the safety of our staff during the burn, and the safety of the public following the burn. The hazardous tree treatment will involve felling of some trees, and it will also involve raking around others, to protect them from fire.
Further details on the service from Mr Bob Williams, President, Mount Beauty RSL on 5754 1585, or 0427 784 499.
Following the service, everyone is invited to the Mount Beauty Senior Citizens Rooms for a BBQ Lunch, refreshments and the traditional activities (read two-up), plus a couple of beers and a few old stories. •
FFM Vic is planning to undertake the burn during late April; however, preparation works are expected to start soon. The preparation works will occur between 9am and 5pm. We will only close off tracks when we need to - such as when undertaking tree felling operations. Otherwise, the area will remain open. FFM Vic will clearly sign and tape off closed areas. •

This item should have gone in a few weeks back. For that we apologise – but sometimes things just don’t go to plan (a bit like the latest lock-down).
Back in January, Mount Beauty Power played ladder leaders Yackandandah at home. It was a 1 v's 2 game. Mount Beauty made 7-184 from our 40 overs. They then bowled Yack out for 164 in 35.5 overs.
Craig Henderson’s bowling figures were 1/31 from 7.5 overs, taking the last wicket for the day.
Toby Derrick’s bowling figures were 1/33 from 7 overs. And to show what a great and versatile game cricket is, Craig is 60 years of age and Toby is 12 years of age. Well done team! •

It is always nice to sit by a warm fire during Winter. However, people often forget to keep them well maintained. When smoke starts to come back into the room, this is an indication that the chimney/flue may be blocked and will need to be swept by a professional chimney sweep. These blockages may be due to a large build-up of creosote (black soot) or from other obstructions like a

bird’s nest. Sweeping your chimney/flue will help prevent fires and promote efficiency. The CFA attend more houses during winter as a result of chimney/flue fires. Therefore, it is important to maintain your chimney/flue by having it swept once a year.
For better, safe burning, follow these tips: Burn only dry, well-seasoned hardwood. Use kindling wood and paper to get started. Leave air controls open for at least 15-20 minutes to start the fire burning and when re-loading. Build your fire using smaller logs, and then build on this with larger logs. If you have children, a fireplace guard is always a good precaution. Always ensure you have a

working smoke alarm in your house. Never put clothes close to wood fires. Never use petrol, oil or kerosene to help light the fire. Make it a habit to look outside and check your chimney/flue for smoke. Refer to Advert on Page 2 for further help. •

This book, Below Bogong – A history of Mount Beauty is the second book complied by Diane Edmondson. Her first being Tawonga Remembers, the history of Tawonga was launched at the Tawonga Hall in 2016. The success and interest in this book was overwhelming and it was obvious that people purchasing the book were interested in the local history of the area.
It was at this point that she decided to compile another book, this time on the history of the township of Mount Beauty.

It begins with an overview of the area and covers the early construction of the Kiewa hydroelectricity scheme, its people, and early settlement of Tawonga South, Lower Bogong, Bogong and Mount Beauty. Maintaining proper tyre pressure is important for many reasons other than reducing the potential of a flat tyre or a blowout.
In order to achieve optimum handling from your vehicle, from everyday driving to making emergency manoeuvres, tyre pressure needs to be at the proper inflation level.
Even a tyre that doesn't appear to be low on air can result in reduced vehicle handling and excessive tread wear.
Check your tyre pressure regularly
Perform a simple tyre inspection
Be aware of uneven wear of the tyre
