Five competition dragon boats and over 200 paddlers will be racing on Rocky Valley Dam this Australia Day long weekend in the 2021 ‘Mile-High’ Falls Creek Regatta. This annual regatta is a Dragon Boat Victoria (DBV) member favourite, as it is one of the most scenic venues for competition and brings paddlers together after the day’s racing.
The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.
The weekend is also an opportunity for the local community to experience the thrill and physical challenge of participating in the sport of dragon boat racing where the focus relies on teamwork for success. Community teams have registered to compete through the Falls Creek Resort Management. At preliminary training on Saturday local teams learn paddling techniques and safety protocols as well as tips for a race winning performance on the Sunday race day. Experienced dragon boat members lead the training and then steer them in their races.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
Victorian and interstate clubs will also be competing in a full day of events. Dragon Boat clubs from Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Gippsland, Wodonga and Mount Beauty have attended and loved this event in the past, but clubs from New South Wales and the ACT will be struggling to get here because of you know what!.
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
Paddlers in this fun filled yet highly competitive regatta will participate in series of races held in a variety of categories over a 200m course, with crews completing the

course in around 50-70 seconds. Dragon Boat Victoria President told ‘This Week’ that “paddlers competing do so for a variety of reasons ranging from those participating purely for recreational reasons to others who are elite athletes
Whilst all races will have their highlights, a couple of significant races in the regatta include the Cancer Survivors and Supporters Race and watching a local Junior team of under 18 year olds from Brave Hearts competing against adult teams.
“No matter what your reason is for getting in the boat, it is a sport which requires superb teamwork, with all paddling in time together, and from a health perspective, gives the heart rate a good workout and relies upon using your core and upper body strength.”
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig
Despite this, the event is well known in the dragon boat community as one which
always takes place in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Many teams use this event to sharpen their skills and test out their boat combinations in preparation for the Victorian Championships which are to take place at Nagambie Lake in March and then the Australian Championships in April.
This is an exciting picturesque event with great viewing for spectators on the banks of the Rocky Valley Dam and for locals paddling, an amazing opportunity to experience the thrill of dragon boating. Spectators will be well catered for with food and drinks available on the foreshore.
No time to be smelling the roses during this weekend’s Gravity Enduro. Pic - Jiri Cech.
And if you plan on travelling to Falls Creek on the Sunday morning, allow plenty of time (an extra half hour at least) as there will be close to 500 cyclists on the road as part of the Alpine Classic. •
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.

In 1984 the first edition of the Bogong to Hotham, aka The Rooftop Run saw a handful of runners take on what was ultimately an unmanaged trail for many sections, from the camp ground at Mountain Creek to the Summit of Mount Hotham some 64km in distance including elevation gains of 3500metres.
Fast forward 35 years (to 2019) and thanks to the team at Parks Victoria, runners are presented with what, by comparison, could be considered a well-manicured trail - cleared of undergrowth and fallen trees from the winter season. Whilst the challenge ahead remains at the extreme level to complete the course successfully - and in the required time, it certainly is made more achievable due to the work done by Parks Victoria to make the trails safer and more accessible.
TOver the years the event has had many custodians and currently is managed by the team at Trailsplus. In 2017 a 29km option was added from the Aqueduct at Langford’s Gap to Hotham. Langford’s Gap is also the finish line of the 35km traditional section. The final 29km was added to introduce runners to the high country and alpine trail running conditions, but without the full experience and fitness levels required to meet the extreme challenge of the 35km or full 64km course. The 29km provides that first step and also a pre-qualifier for the 35km in future years ultimately leading to a full course attempt. Whilst the 29km course is a great starting point, it none the less requires participants to carry the full mandatory kit that the full course runners do. We know too well that conditions in the high country can change very quickly and with runners’ safety our number one priority, there are no short cuts when it comes to equipment required to be carried.
he years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred.
New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.
Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’
ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different. Falls Creek Service

The event traditionally sees international runners taking on this iconic event with runners coming from France, New Zealand, Germany, UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands. This beautiful part of Australia is appreciated by these folk and our National Parks are a fabulous attraction. Add to this, runners from just about all states and the event lives up to its reputation of being a challenging yet safe and memorable experience that would normally be enjoyed by up to 100 runners. COVID-19 has played hell with a big stick and while the event is still planned to go ahead, runners are having trouble accessing Victoria. Allowing we are only days out from the event there are still places available in all distances, if you have the qualifying requirements and the mandatory equipment you are most welcome to join us, but must register online www.trailsplus.com.au/b2h.
Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting.
This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.
If you have any specific agenda items, please email http://joprothero@fallscreek.com.au. We look forward to seeing you all there. •

At the base of the walking and mountain biking trails!

As we welcome a New Year, we’re often motivated to make a list of ideas, expectations or activities we hope to achieve, and create changes in our lives for the better. It’s encouraging to set new goals; however, reality is out of 365 days, every day is a chance to reflect on what we want to achieve, and it all comes down to what we choose to do, how we to do it, how long we commit to it, and most importantly, how it makes us feel. This can relate to strength, fitness, health, self-care, DIY projects, work-life balance, relationship goals - absolutely anything. Heading into 2021, for those who are currently motivated and emotionally charged to make decisions for future us, here are a few suggestions to help follow through with your goals, while also creating a life that brings positivity, happiness,

optimum health, wellness, and self-care long after January ends.
1. Are your goals realistic? Many start with a significant goal, but haven’t broken it into smaller, attainable goals to determine what is required. Setting large goals without doing this sets us up for disappointment when we don’t achieve it, and breaks momentum. By achieving and celebrating smaller goals, we are one step closer to the larger goal we have set.
2. Creating a plan of action. Would you spontaneously get in the car and decide to visit a location that you don’t know how to get to, and not look at your GPS or a map? You’d take wrong turns and are unlikely to arrive at your desired destination, and instead end up frustrated and exhausted because your efforts did not yield the expected outcome. Planning steps and actions that lead towards your goal will help you move forward. Want to get stronger or fitter? Research the options in your area to help support you with this, whether it’s attending a gym, joining a group fitness class, finding a Personal Trainer, or starting home workouts. Whatever your goal, make an actionable plan.
3. Motivation vs discipline - what is the difference? Motivation comes in bursts,

when we feel a sudden increase in energy and eagerness to do something. We get up, get moving, and feel great for doing it. However, have you ever had days where you just can’t be bothered, even though you know you need to work towards a goal? Discipline is the ability to do what is necessary when it is hardest to do so. Sometimes we have the ability, but not necessarily the desire, to do what we need to. It takes practice and time to develop positive habits, created by actions and repetition. As humans, we need something important that comes from the inside, based on what matters to you, and inspires you, to keep the motivation, drive and commitment going, even on the days where it feels like a struggle.
4. Utilise positive support from those that encourage you. These people become your

tribe. They can be in the form of a gym family, personal trainers, close friends, training buddies, family, work-mates –those who understand your goal and can be honest, supportive and encouraging.
5. Tracking your goal. While we wait for the long-term rewards of our efforts to surface and become evident, being able to track immediate feedback to see we are on the right path is encouraging. It allows us to make necessary changes, while celebrating the smaller wins. What we can track, we can change.
6. Enjoy it! Trust the process, embrace challenges, take pride in your efforts, and believe you have the ability to achieve what you put your focus, dedication and commitment towards. Celebrate the small milestones and be proud of the ongoing changes you continue to make – not just in the first month of the year, and not just towards your goals that you set for yourself, but every single day that you wake up and decide to do your best.
If you are sitting there reading this article,

thinking to yourself that you would like a supportive tribe to help with any health, strength and fitness goals, or need guidance to create a goal and an actionable plan, we welcome new people to Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage located at 217 Simmonds Creek Road, Tawonga South, along with the morning outdoor group fitness classes at the Mount Beauty Netball Courts operating on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6.15am – 7am, $15 per

Iwas always curious as to why there were a couple of Melbourne Metropolitan Tramways Board GMC diesel buses parked in a paddock near the Hinnomunjie Bridge in the Omeo Valley. The answer I received was “Peregrine use them for their rafting trips down the Mitta” Well actually they used them for accommodation at the end of their trips.

the correct answer to light. A bloke called Ian Stapleton purchased 17 or 18 of these buses (all without motors) and towed them, with his short wheel based Landrover, from Melbourne out along the Princes Highway to Bairnsdale, up the Great Alpine Road to Omeo and then along the Omeo highway to a newly purchased plot of land near the Big River Bridge to a spot called Mittagundi where they were used as accommodation for young teenagers as they built the Mittagundi Outdoor Education Centre.
As more permanent buildings were erected, the buses were sold off to varying parties and shipped to many places around Gippsland and put to a range of uses. This was the start of Mittagundi about 43 years ago.
As an outdoor education centre, Mittagundi usually takes in around 500 students per year for that fabulous outdoor experience. The ten day program sees students take on a two day hike across the high plains from Watchbed Creek to Mittagundi where they spend the week learning a range of outdoor skills before hiking back to the bus and heading home.
Each year, for the last 25 or so, the team at Mittagundi have hosted a Pioneer Skills come Bush Festival weekend as their major fund-raiser and this year it takes place on Saturday 16th January – next weekend.

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016.
‘Comes Back Home’ (after missing out last year) and features pioneer skills demonstrations, live music, open mic sessions, BBQ lunch, brekky tents, café, bar and an auction plus dinner. On-site camping is available from Friday afternoon on.
On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?
Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
As Mittagundi’s main fundraising event for the year, it’s a great chance to spend a weekend on the farm and find out more about this not-for-profit organisation that has been tucked away in the valley for 43 years.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
Should you wish to join the team and enjoy a great weekend, jump on to the Mittagundi website at www.mittagundi.org. au and book your tickets.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.
If you are interesting in working at the camp, or attending one of their programs, give the Camp Director, Hamish an email to director@mittagundi.org.au. •

Don’t you just love it when a community member or two, get together and just start and do something. And so it was with Marie Lucas-Gear in Tawonga. As Christmas was approaching, she decided to brighten up Tawonga with Christmas Wreaths as an alternative to Christmas lights.

MISSING BOOK
A copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Environment, Land Use and Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was left for this community in the care of Mr Bill Sutton. Bill was happy to lend the book and until now it was always returned – until this last 18 months. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt someone’s memory. Please contact your Ed on 0400 350 488.

Falls Creek, the Alpine National Park and the area surrounding is proving to be a really great area for cycling of all sorts. Falls Creek has an abundance of mountain biking trails and gravel riding trails all with a well-deserved and respected reputation. But this little item is about road cycling.
On any given day, especially weekends, there are quite a few road cyclists heading up and down the Falls Creek road, the Tawonga Gap and the road to Hotham. On a recent Saturday there were in excess of 100 cyclists riding the Falls Creek Road in that morning period 8am to around 10am.
Many people are training for future events like the Alpine Classic in January or Bicycle Network’s Peaks Challenge in March. Or some folk just cycle up these hills as part of the Ride High Country Seven Peaks Challenge (https://www.ridehighcountry. com.au/7-peaks/) which is a fantastic achievement. In fact, your editor has met a chap from the Macedon Ranges Cycle Club who is in his mid 70’s and has done the Seven Peaks four times.
There are even people who Bike Camp the program. Riding to the start, camping, doing the peaks climb, camping and then riding on to the next venue – a great way to enjoy this part of the state.
But, there are two elements that cannot be stressed enough. Lights! Lights front and rear.
As a motorist, the first thing you see is a light. As a motorist, it is not hard to get a splash of sunlight across your windscreen which reduces visibility for a second. Also, a rider in shadow is so much harder to pick up – to be seen. As the cyclist descends, and is constantly in and out of shadow – a light – front and rear – makes all the difference from a safety point of view. And the new LED lights are fantastic! Do it.
Second point. Descending out of control. We have already had a couple of road cyclists ‘eat it’ because they were going too hard and could not get around a given corner – with one an emergency airlift to Melbourne – pretty bloody seriously hurt. ARMCO Safety Railing doesn’t bend – but does a lot of damage to the human body! Enjoy the riding but keep safe. •
