Astra Lodge, located in the heart of our wonderful resort, has been awarded not just one but three awards by the World Ski Awards and World Luxury Spa Awards announced in Austria over the weekend of 21st and 22nd November. For the fifth consecutive year, Astra was awarded Australia's Best Ski Boutique Hotel 2020, having previously received the honour in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Astra was also named for the second time in the top three of the Best Ski Boutique Hotel in the World category, an impressive recognition that sets it amongst the global ski resorts giants and proves the property is a leader in its field.

There are two Mitch’s in this town. Both are great blokes and do great work. One Mitch, with his wife Sum, runs a great restaurant called Stockpot. That’s Mitch Smith. And if you’re keen on a good business, this quality restaurant may be up for sale.
The other Mitch has also done some great stuff in the community. As well as being a National Youth Science Forum student (sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty) a couple of year’s back, this Mitch also took on a major challenge and succeeded. This is Mitch Cook who took on the challenge of riding up the Tawonga Gap 21 times to ‘Everest’ i.e the equivalent of climbing the 8848 metres to raise in excess of $12,000 for Men’s Health through Movember. This was an excellent effort and was recognised with a great Chris Hocking photo on the front of last edition. Only one problem – your Ed captioned the photo incorrectly, calling Mitch Cook, Mitch Smith. My sincerest apologies to Mitch Cook. He put in the hard yards and he deserves all and every accolade. • Ed
Barb and her team would like to thank their donors, their supporters, the wonderful volunteers and helpers. As a community, Mount Beauty and the valley have been able to assist our local health campus. The latest purchases include a laryngoscopy with screen, three post-operative chairs and low-line beds for KV House. We are looking to compile a list of all donations since May 2014 for publication shortly.
Kiewa Valley Hours Op Shop opens seven days a week from 10am -2pm. They operate as the ‘large item’ Op Shop and work closely with our fellow Op Shop volunteers at the Uniting Church Op Shop in Hollonds Street. Another shining example of our community taking responsibility and working together to achieve great results. •
thank you to those who came out for their time and energy!
We have a working list of trails and features that are in need of some love; so if you’re out and about riding please shoot us an email if you notice any areas needing some attention. Our trails are lovingly maintained by our (mostly) local community volunteers, and if you are keen to learn how you can help please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Keep your eyes peeled for another working bee happening before the Holidays.

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.
Barb Talbot and the wonderful crew of volunteers at the Kiewa Valley House Op Shop had set a goal over the last couple of years. The Op Shop had been running since May 2014, and in recent years the amount contributed to the hospital and Kiewa Valley House was growing, becoming quite significant. So the team set the goal of raising a quarter of a million dollars by Christmas this year. The great news is, thanks to record sales of $10,023.62 in November, that the quarter of a million has been reached with the figure prior to December 2020 being $250,672.72 being raised to go to the hospital and Kiewa Valley House.
The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.
The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion of Loyalty will be offered by Councillor Tony Keeble of the Alpine Shire. Prayers will be led by Sister Eileen Reardon of the Catholic Church and the Guest Speaker on the day will be Flight L Richard Cornell ALTC Bandiana..

It has been said before that ‘It is an ill wind that blows nobody any good’ and if there is one thing we have learned this year it is just how important our local friends and neighbours are.
Out of the whole Lock-down parts one and two, we have learned (if we didn’t already know) just what a wonderful community we have here.
Another thing we have learned is what a great range of talented artisans we have among us. One of these is Chip Bragg who spends a fair amount of his time making leather goods from interesting leathers like Kangaroo, Water Buffalo and Byson. His range of hand-made products includes

Chipp displays his products at our local markets and will be there this Saturday – giving you the chance to secure some interesting gifts for Christmas – or you can give him a call on 03 5754 4125.
In actual fact, our regular community markets (which support the running of our Uniting Church) is a great place to have a browse and potentially pick up some unique Christmas gifts.
In our last paper we mentioned Phil Rumpff’s Calendars featuring a range of local photography – and Phil will be at this market on Saturday 5th.
There’ll be an impressive range of locally made gifts on display at the annual Christmas Pop Up Market at Templar Lodge on Sunday, 20th December. In general, our shops and businesses have a pretty comprehensive range of gifts and Christmas gear whether it be your table decorations from the supermarket, beautiful pampering gifts from Gather and Harvest, home-ware and handyman gear from Mt Beauty Hardware, or Christmas lights or catalogue items from North East Home Improvement Co.
Then you can order you tasty Christmas treats form the Bakery. Cakes, puddings, ginger breads and much more.
Now is also the time to get to our local butcher and order your Christmas hams, pork, seafood or any of their specialty smoked and rolled products.
Alpine Outfitters has a great range of gifts and Christmas lines for the outdoors types, Sassy Road has a shop-full of gifts, jewellery, clothes and home-wares, and our wonderful pharmacy has excellent stocks of exotic perfumes. Also, check out the ‘Against the Grain’ Clothing range with Elissa at Ski Plus. They are now opening for summer and would love to see everyone. Plus they have good stocks of other gear.
Also in Tawonga South we have the very well stocked Tawonga South Store, Newsagency, Post Office and Tattslotto outlet. The team have done a fantastic job of putting together a great range of ideal Christmas giftware for all members of the family.
Of course, there is also Rocky Valley Bikes and Snowsports. Glenyse and Brian are doing their best to purchase stocks of bikes and gear so that your Christmas can be the best. Call in and check their stock and lay-by now.
And when you consider how tough everyone has done it recently and how much we have had to rely on each other, why would anyone ignore the locals and travel to the big smoke? It doesn’t make sense. Let’s keep the Christmas spirit alive in town – please! •

How would many people think that the forecast for Mount Beauty is created? The cynics will suggest something involving evil dwarves and roulette wheels but that is not the case. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) does the routine forecast twice a day – early morning and late afternoon – and then updates it during the day if there are significant changes.

The forecast relevant to Mount Beauty is that for the North East region – a large area bounded to the north by the Murray River, to the East to a point beyond Corryong, to the West to points beyond Benalla and Yea and to the South to beyond Marysville. One of the critical inputs to the forecast are the data from weather stations and there are 13 such stations distributed across the North East area.
Falls Creek Resort Management will be collecting hard waste on Wednesday 26th April - the day after ANZAC Day. Please see our Hard Waste Collection guidelines on the website, or if you require any additional information, please contact the FCRM Office on 03 5758 1200. • Summer Debrief
When we look at the weather on our phones, the app will tell us that it is giving us a forecast for that specific location whether it is Mount Beauty, Dederang, Whitfield, Omeo or wherever. But what it is really giving you is that one North East forecast that is adjusted by ‘rules of thumb’ for the specifics of that location. But, unless you happen to live close to a weather station, the forecast is unlikely to be specific to that location.
When you look at a forecast for Mount Beauty, the nearest weather stations are Falls

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
Creek, Lake Dartmouth, Albury, Mt Hotham and Wangaratta so those are the data that the forecaster will have taken into account in preparing the North East forecast. Those stations are a long way away from Mount Beauty and at very different altitudes –Mount Beauty is at about 330 meters (asl), Albury is at about 150 meters and the Falls Creek weather station is at 1765 meters –so the models will have interpolated data from those sites to estimate what conditions might be in Mount Beauty. Generally they do a good job of this but it is nowhere near as good as having data from that specific location.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?
Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
Back in 2013, the Airport Management Association (AMA) installed a webcam and weather station at the airport using funds from a Community Grant from the Alpine Shire. The camera and weather data are available from the website www.ymbt.org.au and has been useful not just to pilots coming to Mount Beauty but also to the general community. AMA is hoping to replace the weather station and we have been in discussion with BoM about replacing it with one that will meet their standards. Getting BoM to agree to a new weather station is not easy as they are inundated with requests from
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.
MR: How did you get into riding?

towns all over Australia that want one.
The first step is to persuade BoM that they need it and I think that they are almost there. The second step will be to find a suitable location on the airport for it. The third step is to get the money for it. This photo is the weather station at Wangaratta airport and it is just an array of sensors including the Stevenson screen on the left that houses the thermometers. A ‘basic’ automatic station (wind speed & direction, pressure, Temp, Dewpoint and Rainfall) includes some very high quality (and high cost) instruments that will cost about $110,000 to purchase and install. The benefit to the community is that having data from a BoM weather station at Mount Beauty will improve the accuracy of local forecasts and that is beneficial for anyone that uses the forecast (i.e. everyone!).
A weather station will contribute to the work of emergency services by giving them access to an official source of weather data to assist

their operations. Ambulance aircraft (both fixed wing and helicopters) visit YMBT by day and both ambulance and military helicopters visit YMBT at night using night vision equipment.
One of the consequences of many towns wanting weather stations is that BoM will only install a new weather station if we pay for it (assuming that we can first convince them that we have a suitable site). AMA have applied for funding for it under the Bushfire Recovery Grants Program but we will have to also tap into other sources of funds to raise the full amount. The Lions Club of Upper Kiewa Valley has, over many years, organised and staged many events for the Mount Beauty community. This year has been one in which there has been an enormous amount of disruption to community activities, in all areas. The events our Lions Club host are no exception.
We were unable to hold our November Spelling Bee for Kiewa Valley primary schools, and preparations for future events have been thrown into disarray.
We will not be able to hold Carols by Candlelight this year. This event, which would have been held on December 11, has had to be cancelled because of uncertainty surrounding the procedures we would need to carry out to keep it safe. The Mount Beauty and District Community Band, which has been playing for us for several years, is not able to participate; and an alternative would be hard to find at this stage.
The Bogong Conquestathon will not be staged next year. It would normally be held on the Labour Day weekend in early March. We are uncertain of the restrictions which may be necessary at the time, particularly in view of the fact that we need permission from Parks Victoria to run the event. In general, we have been having increasing difficulty over the last several years having enough volunteers to efficiently organise the climb.
Our Australia Day Breakfast will be held as usual. The Alpine Shire is in full support, and we anticipate being able to manage any extra requirements made necessary by the pandemic.
Members of the Club have found these decisions extremely difficult, and we hope that we will be able to be part of community events as conditions move to ‘Covid normal’ next year. •
