The community of Falls Creek have a saying that “visitors come for winter, but then they stay for summer” and summer is really something to behold on the high plains, for both artists and public alike.
For the past four years Falls Creek resort and community has hosted a highly successful Artist In Residence program, where-by a number of Australian and International artists both established and emerging have immersed themselves in the unique alpine environment, to explore, connect, create and re-interpret the impressive ancient landscape.
Falls Creek Resort Management (FCRM) is again offering artists the opportunity to participate in Australia’s highest Artist-inResidence program.

“The residency program offers artists a chance to familiarise themselves with the Falls Creek community and surrounding alpine park and develop ideas for permanent or ephemeral works” said Lindy Allen, chair of Falls Creek Arts and Culture Development Committee.
The next round of submissions is being accepted, for summer residencies for a period of up to six weeks. The program aims to develop artistic practice, increase creative spaces, public art and cultural opportunities within the Falls Creek Resort. A supported Indigenous Artist Residency program is also available to Indigenous Artists.

Indi Drew
There’s no doubt that the global pandemic has turned a lot of people’s lives upside down.
For local teenager, Indi Drew, you could say her world was literally turned upside down when she had no choice but to leave her home at The Washington School of Ballet (TWSB) in Washington, DC, and fly home to Tawonga South.
Indi first left home at the tender age of 15 to pursue a career in ballet when she was offered a scholarship at the HARID Conservatory in the United States in 2017, before moving to Washington to dance in the Pre-Professional Program at TWSB in 2019.
Her days consisted of 12 hours of dancing, from 8am until 8pm, with the student also expected to complete online study for her high school certificate in her own time. Indi said while the workload was intense, she quickly became very independent living on the other side of the world from her family.
“Honestly I wasn’t scared to move to the US. Obviously a little part of me was nervous, but I surprised myself. I kind of just went - it was my dream,” Indi says.
“I learnt a lot about myself and had to really figure out how to do things by myself, but I really did grow as a person.”
In March this year, Indi was preparing to dance in the biggest show of her life, having been selected to perform with The Washington Ballet - the professional ballet dancers she was aspiring to join eventually.
At first, the students were told they were taking two weeks off and would then be back training - but of course, COVID-19 cases continued to rise and eventually, the international students were told to go home.
“I was so sad because I didn’t want to miss the show, and coming home meant I didn’t get that opportunity to dance with the company anymore,” Indi says.
“They postponed the show until July, so I thought maybe I’d go back then, but then it was postponed again until next year in April, but the cases kept rising and I made the decision myself to not go back. I thought ‘I can’t sit around waiting; I think I should apply to other places’.”
Indi applied for schools both in Australia and internationally, and was accepted into three international pre-professional companies. She was preparing her VISA for Europe when she received an offer from Queensland Ballet right here in Brisbane.
While Indi says having to leave her dreams of dancing in the USA behind left her in a really bad state of mind for a long time, she now appreciates being able to come home and spend precious time with her parents and two younger sisters.

T“When I was overseas, I would be lucky if I got two months a year with them. Now having spent quite a few months here, I’ve been able to spend proper time with my family and reconnect with all my friends here.”
She’s also excited at the prospect of staying in Australia, and only a short flight from her hometown, for the foreseeable future.
“I think eventually I’ll want to go back overseas, but for now I think the best thing for me is to stay in Australia,” Indi says.
Indi will head north to start training with the Queensland Ballet in January 2021 and when asked if we might get to see her dance right here in Australia sometime soon, she’s hopeful.

New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public. Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’ ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different. Falls Creek Service

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

The COVID-19 crisis is still with us – and even though conditions may be easing, there are still rules in place that we must stick to. And none of these rules have been really that hard to adhere to. Just a little bit of courtesy and commons sense.
Years ago, a music teacher of mine described the Oboe as ‘an ill-wind that nobody blows any good!’ But, in relation to the current situation, we’ll correct the statement to say “it’s an ill wind the blows nobody any good!” because there is always something good that can come out of a bad circumstance. In this particular case, it’s the fact that many people could not get to the ‘big smoke’ to do their shopping and suddenly discovered what a great range of products we have in our local stores. Approaching Christmas, it is now a good time to start looking at our local stores and deciding what we would like to buy for our
family and friends for Christmas. By shopping locally you are actually giving a gift to a friend in the community – and that should make everyone feel good.
In these fairly trying times, the amount of care that has been on show among the community is absolutely heart-warming. Whether it was through the fires, or just through the lock-downs, people have made an effort to support each other – and that is a sign of a great community – one that we are all proud to be a part of.

The front page of our last edition featured several of Phil Rumpff’s fabulous orchid shots. Phil is also pretty good at other aspects of nature photography. This year Phil has produced a couple of 2021 Calendars – one is a local Kiewa Valley scenic calendar and the other one is a mix of local and non-local colourful and photogenic tree barks.
Both calendars are available from Campbell and his team at Mount Beauty Hardware and also from Pierre at Alpine Outfitters (the Mount Beauty Post Office).
Phil will also be at the next Mount Beauty Community Market on December 5th with a small range of Jigsaw Puzzles (local and wildlife scenes), a small range of Poster Prints, and a range of mounted only and fully framed prints.
Phil is in the process of putting together a new order which will include a calendar featuring local wildflowers/orchids (after seeing how well the orchid pictures printed up in the last edition).

The Alpine Shire Council is developing the ‘Alpine Events Strategy and Action Plan’ to provide direction for the management and delivery of events into the future.

Focal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.
MR: How did you get into riding?

Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).
The majority of our local business owners have had one of the toughest years yet, so it's time to get together, have a drink and cheers to the 'year that was' almost being over!
MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool.
A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all of the races

Brilliant Effort
When a local bloke gets a half page pic and story in Monday’s Herald Sun (on page 15) who know he’s done something pretty special. Back in Winter edition 16, this paper had much pleasure in informing the community that Mitch Cook had set himself a challenge – to ‘Everest’ on the Tawonga Gap.
Mount Everest is 8848 metres above sea level. The bottom of the Tawonga Gap Road at the Kiewa Valley Highway is 400 metre asl and the top of the Tawonga Gap is just about 880 metres asl – giving a vertical distance of 480 metres. Divide 480 into 8848 and you
get 18.43 which is the minimum number of times Mitch has to ride his bike up and down the Tawonga Gap to achieve his aim of ‘Everesting’ the Gap and raising money for Movember.
At the time, Mitch said if he looked like getting around $5000 he would add the extra two laps to make it 21 laps and 10,000 metres vertical.
Starting at 4am on what proved to be a fantastic day for a ride (sunny, clear, not a lot of wind and not too hot) Mitch was into it. Just over 16 hours later and Mitch had clocked up the 21 laps – and had averaged around 45 minute laps (up and back down) – and looked like he could go again for a couple more laps.

Other supports did one or two laps but each one was support and important. Mum, dad and girlfriend Bri were at the top of the gap with a full on support crew – and were hanging on every push of the pedal! It worked and to date Mitch has raised in excess of $12,000 for Movember! Well done Mitch.

MASK FATIGUE
Get It On!
Yes- it is real – and no – it is not a local shop issue, or a community issue. It is a state wide COVID-19 issue and the State of Emergency powers that require us all to wear a face mask remain in place until 11:59pm on Sunday 6th December.
And yet it appears that people are getting just a little tired, or a little flippant, or just plain bloody selfish. It is still a requirement that you must wear a face mask when you leave home.
Over the last couple of weeks local staff have been victims of verbal attacks when asking customers to put on a face mask. One person even filmed this and then made threats of legal action as they felt they were being discriminated against. What a load of crap! If you don’t have a mask and don’t have a lawful excuse or exception for not wearing a mask – then you are just being plain selfish and stupid! And some people might even say that you should be discriminated against – for being so bloody stupid.

We live in a wonderful community- and the COVID-19 problems have brought the best out in many people – with folks supporting each other, caring for each other – and going out of their way to make sure others are ‘doing OK!’
Our local staff and business operators, in all of the businesses, are doing a great job. Navigating their way through this pandemic and working hard to offer a consistent and safe shopping experience is no easy task. And their good work is fairly evident to anyone who visits any of the stores in town.
Some instances have made it to Ventbook (read Facebook) - which is unfortunate because most posts usually only present one side of the story – and therefore a misguided message is distributed internationally – and this does not make anyone look real good!
If you do have a lawful excuse or exception for not wearing a mask, the common sense thing to do would be to obtain a document that you can carry with you and show the staff member/shop-keeper when asked about the mask. The staff/shop keepers are wearing a mask to protect you – out of courtesy to you. The least you could do is wear a mask or carry a medical certificate explaining your situation.
And talking about wearing compulsory items, it seems to the editor that, during holiday periods, some people seem to think that you don’t have to wear a helmet while riding a bike in the country! •
