It’s a Barry Crocker!

“It’s the season to have a shocker,” “It couldn’t get any worse,” “It reminds me of 1991” and “we were due a bad one” …these are just a few of the sagest comments made to me over the last few days from community members and business operators grappling with the tragedy that is 2020.

The reality of what is turning out to be “snowless horribilis 2020” just keeps on giving (or not). Our diligent ski patrol team continue to monitor snow depth across the resort at the three collection points on the Summit, the Brown Tank and on the south side. They aren’t quite scratching patches together yet, as the clear nights and freezing temperatures have retained snow well. Combined with some snow farming across the ski area, the snow cams aren’t lying... early morning conditions have been excellent, attracting plenty of XC skiers and in-bounds tourers and the occasional snow kite.

But the reality is as of 19th July, 2020 is neck and neck with 2006 for a really, really poor start. We tied at 2nd worst start to the season on record, well the last 30 years at least.

The attached chart, courtesy of Falls Creek Ski Patrol shows two stats. The blue being the snow depth as of 19/7 in every season since 1991, followed by the Season Maximum snow depth in centimetres.

Grasping on to the last skerrick of hope is the fact that the historical evidence supports the contention that it will eventually snow (let’s just ignore 2006 for the time being). Fingers crossed for a 1991, 1992, 2003, 2010 or a 2013 finish to the season.

Our Falls Creek residents and season community members have rallied around the resort operators that are continuing to provide employment and hope for the

To encourage regional visitors, Resort Management has made changes to resort entry to support these operators. Entry is now free post 3pm, to encourage snow play and an early dinner at any of the restaurants within the village. A range of venues are offering dinner from 5pm.

If a cheeky day out with family or a few close friends is more your style, lunch is on us! Resort Management will refund your single day resort entry fee. How? Just spend the equivalent of your resort entry (preferably more), present the venue receipt, along with your printed out resort entry pass to our VIC team in Slalom Plaza, and ‘lunch is on us’... we’ll at least to the value of your resort entry.

Resort Entry is located at Howman’s Gap, approx. 4km before reaching Falls Creek. If arriving after 5pm and departing prior to midnight on the same day, entry is free.

he years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public. Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’ ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different. Falls Creek Service

Mount Beauty Service

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion of Loyalty will be offered by Councillor Tony Keeble of the Alpine Shire. It’s been hard looking at social media for the past week and seeing what Mt Buller, Perisher and Thredbo as well as the smaller mountains have going on.

There was a kind of smile through gritted teeth masochism to reading what was going on at other snowfields in Australia. New Zealand; bring it on! Show me everything you’ve got and in all its glory. But looking at pictures of people skiing and boarding at other Australian Resorts was a special kind of hell for the past seven days. I’m not even going to get into how Perisher & Thredbo got between 70-80cm of snow around the 14 July and we got diddly squat. It’s like Ullr knew and said you don’t need it. It’s easy to find yourself feeling low, grumpy and irritable in the wake of the lifts closing down and the Melbourne lockdown. I think it’s true to say that so many people had invested their hopes into the 2020 Snow

Season after such a rubbish start to the year. It was almost like, if we can just get up to the snow and have a ski and board, maybe the rest of the year will work out OK. Maybe that’s why people have been hit so hard by the reality of this second wave of COVID-19 cases.

The downturn in business again, the remote schooling on-line again, the restrictions on who you can see and when again, all of these things and many more represent a snuffing out of the hope that so many of us were clinging too about the way this pandemic was playing out, and instead we see a resurgence of fear.

Fear for the health and wellbeing of our loved ones, fear about our livelihoods, fear of the impact of remote learning on children’s educations, fear about the long term economic impacts of Coronavirus. It’s so easy to get caught up in what frightens and worries us instead of looking at what we have right here right now.

We have so much to be positive about and grateful for here at Falls Creek and in Mount Beauty. I’m grateful that Resort Management decided to keep the resort open and the cross-country ski trails groomed. I’m grateful for the people within the community who are constantly finding ways for us to stay fit and healthy both mentally and physically. I feel so positive when this community find ways to support

each other both financially and emotionally by spending what they can when they can at local businesses.

I feel uplifted and positive when I see this beautiful natural environment in all her glory, whether it be the majestic power of an alpine storm, the tranquillity of walking through falling snow, the sound of trees rustling in the wind or the glory of colour and light reaching over the mountains each day at sunrise.

And our Race Club Kids have found new joy too, in this new unusual of a lift-less mountain. We’re seeing our kids get out even more to simply play. There are more dog walks, more hikes, more baking, more creativity in finding different things to do with the resources we have to hand.

More igloos, more mud, more home built jumps, more walks to waterfalls, more family and friends ski/board outings now that we have less structured coaching programs to fill up our time. More realisations from the kids that maybe they’re not as fit as they thought when they couldn’t xc-ski from Windy Corner to Eagle Rock without complaining!

So while we can all reflect with regret on what might have been if COVID-19 hadn’t interfered a second time, I think it’s also possible for us to feel positive about the way we’re evolving to meet the challenges we face head on – Together! •

Collaboration Delivers Project

All of us will remember back through summer 2019 – 2020 the bushfires Australia wide. While we here were not under immediate threat, the Ovens and Kiewa Valleys were surrounded by fires and the resultant smoke. This smoke lingered on and off for months fillings houses and community infrastructure – having a major impact on local residents.

At a meeting of the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty (before Lock-down One) the idea of donating some air purifiers to Alpine Health, the operators of our hospitals and aged care facilities in Bright, Myrtleford and Mount Beauty was floated and accepted and then the networking started.

The three local Rotary clubs of Bright, Myrtleford and Mount Beauty agreed to contribute seed funding to kick-start the project, with Mount Beauty being the project manager. Plans were halted slightly when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, but pushing forward with the plan the project now became more attractive to many as the air purifiers not only could remove smoke but, as they have HEPA filters, they can remove pathogens as well.

With great assistance from the District 9790 Bushfire Recovery Fund the project was now looking like coming to fruition. With assistance from the Rotary Clubs of Yarrawonga/Mulwala, Heidelberg (Melbourne) and Fremantle WA, a total of $22,500 was raised.

To complete the project, Mark Lucey, President of the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty recently handed over 45 Breville air purifiers to Nick Shaw, the Corporate Services Manager of Alpine Health. These purifiers will be used in the hospitals and aged care homes in Bright, Myrtleford and Mount Beauty.

Marnie, with her partner JJ have been wonderful hosts to many appreciative guests over the years and they love what they do.

The success of this project showcases that a collaborative approach between clubs and district can deliver projects on a far greater scale than the initial concept ever anticipated. A sincere thanks to members of all of the clubs involved. The contributions have produced a fantastic result for health in this area. •

There are only a few people that have had such a wonderful and endearing relationship with Falls Creek as a resident and business operator and in this particular case it is the beautiful Marnie Searles. And the reason we mention it here is simple.

A Man of the Mountains

“I think that credit for much of the background work in the initial development of Falls Creek should be given to Martin Romuld for his early encouragement and appreciation of the beauty of the high country and of skiing.” Fred Vines, A member of Bogong Ski Club in the 1940’s.

Born near Trondheim, Norway in 1905, Romuld began skiing at an early age. By the time he was six he was competing in various ski events, but it was in ski jumping that he competed at the National level. Romuld studied civil engineering in Trondheim but with the Great Depression looming and threatening Norway, he decided to emigrate, arriving in Australia in March 1928. While working in Melbourne in 1931, Martin returned to competitive

skiing. For the next few years he was to dominate both State and National jump and langlauf events while his great rival, Tom Mitchell, consistently beat him in the slalom. He was considered “one of the best ski jumpers the country has ever seen and one of the best all round skiers for his day.” (Australian Ski Year Book 1988).

In 1934, the editor of Victorian Ski Year Book wrote “We are fortunate, from several aspects, in having Mr Martin Romuld as a member. Firstly, he brought honour to the Club during the past season by winning Australia’s most coveted ski title: that of National Champion, a title which he will be successful in retaining for many seasons. ...We were further indebted to him for his splendid work at Donna Buang for the jumping course. Mr Romuld was responsible for the plan and profile of the new jumping hill, together with the solution of its engineering problems.”

While working, Martin however primarily skied alone - measuring flow rates and recording snow depths. At times additional workers would assist in the measurements and it was many of these SEC workers that Romuld taught to ski. Interest in skiing was such that in 1940 discussions about forming a ski club were held in his cottage and later the same year SEC workers based in Bogong village formed the Bogong Ski Club.

Martin skied extensively over the High Plains on day trips extending from Mt Hotham to Mt Bogong. Andy Broad, in the November 1936 edition of Schuss magazine, wrote about joining him on a tour. “We decided to call in on our old friend, Martin Romuld who is stationed at the SEC’s cottage. Martin is very fit, enjoys every bit of life on the plains, and is very pleased with his job. On the jump which he has already built at the rear of his cottage he has covered 128 feet (39 metres). He has also a slalom course set down the Middle Valley Creek.

During the afternoon he took us for a tour along Rocky Valley, towards Mt McKay. After running over it, Martin claims that Mt McKay possesses the finest downhill course he has ever seen in Australia, the descent being 3,000 feet (914.4 metres) to the snowline. This mountain also has ideal

In 1941 Martin joined the Royal Australian Air Force and after the war skied mainly at Mt Buller. He maintained his involvement in competitive skiing as an official. It was from participating in his first ski jump event at Falls Creek in 1958 that Julian Newton-Brown became friends with Romuld. The Falls Creek Museum has on exhibit, by courtesy of Newton-Brown, the wooden skis used by Romuld on his High Plains rounds. A pair of his jumping boots are also on display. •
