With this year’s Ice Plunge having been sidelined by a pandemic, it has been suggested that perhaps it might be time to appease the snow gods, with a quick dip in Rocky Valley Dam. It would be fair to say, the suggestion wasn’t greeted with much enthusiasm in our offices. Particularly by the new members of the resort management team, for whom it is ‘compulsory’ to plunge into the lake ahead of the snow season (the Ice Plunge traditionally takes place on June 1st).
Before donning my togs and a onesie, I thought it prudent to at least investigate some history, before committing myself and any other ‘volunteers’ to a quick sacrificial dip.
Thankfully, snow, or the lack of natural snow that is, isn’t too uncommon at this time of the year.
Delving into the Falls Creek Ski Patrol Snow Depth archives validates that in 1989, 1991, 1997, 2008, 2013 and 2015 on the 29th of June, there had been less natural snow fall than we have recorded to date.
Or to quote the Ski Patrol oracle of snow –Dez… “Since 1988 (33 seasons) on 30/06 there has been 12 seasons with < 20cm of cover (this includes seven with < 2cm) 22 seasons with < 50cm of cover and 11 seasons with > 50cm of cover. The average depth for the 30/06 is 39cm. Not too abnormal for this time of year but we need something soon.”
Now, the good news is that with rare exception, no natural snow currently, does not foretell a woeful season ahead. In fact, in more cases than not, a better than average season has usually prevailed from late or low snow starts… the snow comes, just starts a little later. Note: Insertion
of a disclaimer at this point, that past performance is no guarantee of future results. As I’ve written before, predicting the weather is a form of alchemy, akin to economics, at the best of times.
So, don’t despair, take the opportunity to do a few more of those ‘ski fit’ exercises you’d planned months ago (but haven’t started yet – come on, be honest, none of us have started them either!). Not sure where to start… google it… there are a tonne of sites with the Top Five exercises, or the 10-minute ski fit workout… if only there were some #SkiFitYoga videos!!!
Alternatively, there’s always great après, food and beverage to turn to when at Falls Creek. Though as we know, it’s going to look a little different this season… you’ll need to book it, register who’s dining and as the venues are trying to serve as many great guests as possible, get your hustle on when

Many changes are forced upon us by the current COVID-19 crisis. The following is a note from our valued team at the Medical Centre which helps explain the operation for this season. Falls Creek Medical Centre is operating a little differently this season. We have made some adjustments to our building and operations to make it safer for our patients and staff. As always, if Ski Patrol pick you up out on the slopes when you’re having a particularly bad day, our experienced Alpine doctors will look after you. Ski Patrol will ask you to wear a mask and we’ll ask you to keep it on.
Unlike previous years, we won’t be taking ‘walk-in’ customers with medical problems, or minor injuries. We ask that you please first contact us by phone to arrange an appointment time. When you arrive at your assigned time, we will ask you to take a mask on arrival and keep it on for the duration of your visit. Please don’t bring a friend, the only +1s allowed in will be parents of children.
The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred.
New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.
And please don’t bring your cough, cold, runny nose or flu-like symptoms. We will aim to deal with all respiratory symptoms via phone or Telehealth appointments. There will still be medications like antibiotics available for those who need them. If you are very unwell and need to be seen by a doctor, we will make sure this can happen.
Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’
There is also a COVID-19 testing clinic located on the mountain, which will be coordinated by Falls Creek Medical Centre. As guided by the health department, we encourage any person with symptoms of respiratory infection to talk to the doctor
ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.

Without the assistance of many people and/ or agencies Falls Creek Medical Centre would not have been able to provide a medical service (either in-hours or afterhours) on the mountain this season. Therefore, we here at the centre would like to thank the following:
• Stuart Smythe and Falls Creek Resort Management who organised a donation of materials and labour to install partitions between the medical centre’s patient beds which were previously only separated by cloth curtains. This partitioning enables us to have a dedicated resuscitation environment which can be isolated from the rest of the building during procedures generating viral aerosol which would otherwise spread through the whole building.
• Ski Patrol have also installed a ‘sliding window’ at the back entrance to the Medical Centre and heating so they can use the room as a potential ‘holding bay.’ They have also erected a marquee at the back of the Medical Centre so we can abide by the restrictions in patient numbers inside the practice at any given time. They will staff the marquee until the patient can be handed over to the Medical Centre.
• Alpine Health is contributing to some nursing hours each day.
All of this fantastic work will enable the medical centre to provide a safe medical service to our staff, patients, visitors and staff on the mountain. Thankyou. •

The address for the day will be offered by students from the Mount Beauty Secondary College. Speakers will be school captains, Katerina Trnka and Connor Vickers. At our local service, wreaths will be laid by many community representatives and members of the public are invited to do so if they wish.

The ski event version of the Kangaroo Hoppet has been cancelled for 2020 due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, the event organisers are keen to keep people active and engaged and have created a virtual event that is available to everyone.
The Kangaroo Hoppet 2020 – Do It your Way, is just that. You can do it your way! Between the dates of Aug 10-23 you can complete any of the 7km, 21km or 42km distances doing any activity you like. Your activity type, and time if you choose to submit one, will be included in the online participant board.

Hoppet – I did it my way’ t-shirt, and you will receive a downloadable event number. Participants can then choose to complete their nominated distancing doing whatever activity they desire and fill in the completed event for the activity to be registered. To see how people from around the world are participating, there will also be options to upload photos of your activity.
The event organisers are expecting entries from around the world as people from many different nations will be able to participate in the great event from their own homes.
Event Director, Ben Derrick, said the Organising Committee really wanted to keep our great community involved in the event, even though the COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible to run on the day. “Like all event organisers, it was a very difficult decision to cancel the normal event for 2020. However, the opportunity to keep people active during the restrictions was a very strong driver for us to explore options for creating something that our community can be involved in.
The great aspect of the 2020 event is that so many people can do it. You don’t have to ski so we are anticipating that many people will jump on a bike, or go for a run/walk or do whatever they can to complete the distance. There is some great collateral to mark the event that all participants will receive.”
Interest has been strong from far-away places around the world. Derrick continued that there are even entrants that are planning to ski in Europe. “We know of a group in Finland that are going to ski the 42km in the ski tunnel in Voukatti in northern Finland. They said they will then recover in their saunas! It will be a great way to bring an active community together at a time when we cannot travel.”

When COVID-19 first reared its ugly head in Australia earlier this year, it meant a lot of small businesses needed to get creative to find a way to survive.
So when the opportunity for Kiewa Valley local and sportswear designer, Kerry Lucas, to create reusable face masks arose, she jumped at the chance and ended up with one of the most fashionable, practical and protective masks we’ve seen!
Kerry said it all started at the beginning of March when people were starting to wear masks to help keep themselves safe and reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19, and the doctors from Mount Beauty Medical Centre asked her to design a mask for them.
“I worked in collaboration with Dr Mark Zagorski OAM. He had some ideas and requirements, so we did a lot of trials and testing and worked out the best design that way,” Kerry says.
People began to see our local doctors wearing the beautifully designed masks and asking where to get them, so Kerry started a marketing campaign and began selling them through her business’ website, Sacul Sportswear.
Usually around this time of the year, Kerry is busy making cross country ski gear, with orders from the likes of the Hoppet and the Victorian Junior XC Ski Team keeping her busy, and says designing and making face masks has really filled that gap.
The fabrics were carefully researched and selected and are extremely effective at guarding the wearer against the spread of the COVID-19. Their unique tight knit structure traps large droplets from coughs or sneezes, minimising virus transmission.
The outer layer is a Recycled Eco Polyester/ Elastane fabric which has been sewn together with an inner layer of soft, breathable Polyester/Elastane, while the inner layer has been anti-bacterial treated and blocks the proliferation of bacteria.
They also have a pocket where you can insert your own filter for even more protection, and tie up at the back allowing them to be adjusted easily.
The masks can be worn all day without getting damp, don’t tend to fog up glasses, mould well onto the face and even include a sewn in wire so they fit snuggly around the bridge of your nose.
An added bonus is that they’re much friendlier to the environment too, as rather than wearing and throwing out a disposable mask, you can wash them and they’ll generally dry overnight, ready for the next day.
Kerry says she’s also had orders from podiatrists at Falls Creek, as well as massage therapists.
“With those sorts of professions when they’re in close contact with people, it goes both ways - they feel safer wearing a mask, and so does the client. I think that’s really important

The view from Falls Creek village is dominated in winter by the white massive ridge opposite. While many may have dreamed of either skiing down its extreme slopes or gliding on their cross country skis to the summit, it is more likely that more energy has been extended in debating the origins of its name over a sunset drink or two. Why and who was it that named Spion Kopje?
Place names provide the clues to those who have passed this way before us and as such it is fitting that major geographical features in the area retain their aboriginal names, Kiewa River meaning ‘sweet water’ and for Mt Bogong, the highest mountain in Victoria, the ‘big fella.’ Mt Feathertop was named by Jim Brown and Jack Wells, (stockmen who moved cattle to
the Cobungra Station area in 1851) for its appearance, as snow remaining in the summit gullies in spring gives the appearance of feathers. Mt McKay is named after a mountain cattleman as are Hollonds Knob, Marum’s Point and many other features on the Bogong High Plains. A single event, such as losing a gold fob watch or a horse losing a shoe was explanation enough for the naming of Watchbed and Horseshoe Creeks.

Why then Spion Kopje? In Africaans it means spy look out or spy hill, but it was Australian mountain cattleman George Fitzgerald from Shannonvale who named the ninth highest mountain (1890m) in Victoria, Spion Kopje. His father, American born Edward D’Arcy Fitzgerald, arrived in Omeo in 1853 when it was a busy mining town. The same year George’s Irish born mother, Mary Gallagher landed at Port Albert then moved onto Omeo where she married Edward and they had a family of six boys and two girls. While his father worked an alluvial mine near Omeo for 25 years, in 1861 he also bought 160 acres, later named Shannonvale by George. From the 1880’s their cattle were taken each summer to graze on the south eastern
slopes of Mt Nelse. In 1900 George named Spion Kopje after a major battle between the British and the Boers during the South African Boer War. The battle took place in January 1900 on a rocky outcrop on the outskirts of the town of Ladysmith, north west of Durban, where British forces had been cut off and besieged for two months. It was a major defeat for the British forces with 245 dead and 1,250 either wounded or captured.
For many, bestowing the name of a Boer War battle site to a mountain in the Australian Alps raises more questions. However, at the time ‘the colonies’ responded to the battles of the ‘mother country’ with contingents of mounted

troopers. The second wave in 1900 being men with a natural skill at horsemanship and shooting, such as the Victorian and Tasmanian Citizen Bushmen; men who could well have been mountain cattlemen such as George. The departure of Colonial troops featured in the newspapers of the day and the ongoing conflict was reported by a number of war correspondents - among them A.B ‘Banjo’ Paterson. This may not explain why George chose to name such a significant feature after a British defeat but then Spion Kopje was a landmark event for its time, as was Gallipoli in the first World War.
About fifty years after George named Spion Kopje, it was from across the valley where skiing enthusiasts cast their eyes on its slopes. Racing was popular with ski clubs and there was great enthusiasm for the Falls Creek area. In December 1949 the Victorian State Development Committee met in Mount Beauty. Tom Mitchell MLA, in making a submission to the committee, called for the developing ski fields to be supported by extending the Upper Kiewa Road to Omeo; establishing an alpine village at Falls Creek; ensuring that the road from Bogong to Falls Creek be snow ploughed every year and that consideration be given to establishing “a chair hoist at Spion Kopje.” Mitchell was enthusiastic about the latter hoping to see “Inter Dominion contests raced on Spion Kopje slopes in future seasons.” In fact, together with Toni St Elmo, who was later to be the first to establish a rope tow at Falls Creek, he did a survey of a new downhill race course. It was not to be however, and a new ski-field development was concentrated around Falls Creek. •

Alpine Radio has grown to become an essential element in the communities of this area. And like any volunteer organisation, it requires the consideration of the community for its continued existence. Therefore, the occasional donation or grant is always gratefully received.

Alpine Radio wishes to acknowledge and thank News Corp Australia and the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal (FRRR) for a News Corp Bushfire Recovery Program grant awarded through a partnership between News Corp and FRRR.
The $6,000 grant awarded to Alpine Radio will help by enhancing the marketing capability of our station, and we will use this money to help us get back on a more sound financial footing following the bushfires and Covid-19. As an official Emergency Services Broadcaster, Alpine Radio kept broadcasting through the bushfire season in January with emergency warnings, and has kept our listeners informed of the latest information during the Covid-19 emergency.

This publication has run similar articles before. And we will probably continue to run them each year. Your editor would hate to think that someone working or visiting this fabulous resort of ours ends up with a three or four thousand dollar bill for transport to hospital. It can and does happen – and it can be prevented. Read on.
Previously we have quoted figures for this article. But, even without them, the common sense aspect of ambulance insurance is a ‘no-brainer.’
As an example of costs, just from your editor’s experience, is like this. Thirty five years ago, the cost per hour of a simple Lama Helicopter to swing lift towers in to place was $1000 per hour – without the fuel component. To run a modern, fully equipped, fully fitted out Augusta Westland AW 139, complete with highly trained pilots and paramedics around the countryside is not a cheap exercise. Think about it!!

The means slow enough to avoid an mishaps – like losing your steering because your front wheels lock up when you put the brakes on –and you slide in to a ditch (at best!). Get rid of ALL of the snow from your car – it’s dangerous! Carry chains (for your drive wheels), gloves (for your hands), mat (to keel on), torch (to see), and knowledge (to know how and when to fit and remove chains).
Fact Number One: Ambulance membership is cheap. A family membership is now $96.70 per year. A single person membership is now $48.35 per year. In my humble opinion, these figures are way too cheap – but no-one can ever say they could not afford Ambulance Membership.
A clever and innovative local lodge manager, as part of his employment contract would include an Ambulance Membership Form – which (unless they could show they were already covered) the employees had to sign – and the payment came out of their first wage cheque. This would be regarded in most circles as excellent management/staff relations.
The following is an excellent example of the benefits of membership – as quoted by Angus.
“I got ambulance cover just before heading off with my mates on a snowboarding trip to Mt Buller. I had been thinking about cover and thought I’d be unlikely to need it but had a few minutes free so opened my laptop and joined online in the car park of the campsite. It took me five minutes and was really easy and really cheap - especially compared to the other ski field costs. We
had a great weekend but my trip ended abruptly when I ran out of talent, came off a jump and broke three ribs and collapsed a lung.
I ended up in an Air Ambulance to the Royal Melbourne. The trip in the air ambulance would have cost me $7,500 but I didn’t even see a bill. I could have had two lifetimes worth of cover and still been ahead. The fall certainly caused me a lot of pain but I’m fully recovered now and it’s a great relief that I don’t have to deal with a huge bill on top of everything else. I’ve recommended it to all my mates and they can’t believe how cheap it is for what you get - cheaper than a slab and it lasts a full year!”

Ski to the door and ski from the door, this two bedroom apartment is super convenient and has had a smart renovation. It is approximately 57m2 and can comfortably accommodate four people. MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

One other major advantage at Falls Creek is that just about all of the trails lead you back to the village – and from the bottom of Flowtown at Howman’s Gap, you can ride back up the road or be picked up by a friend or family – without getting off road.
Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

If the testosterone trails are not your cup of tea, then Falls Creek is surrounded by about 30km of Aqueduct Trails, management vehicle tracks and connecting dirt roads –all suitable for a leisurely ride on your bikes with the kids.
An Aqueduct Trail is actually a vehicle track that runs along the side of a man-made aqueduct which is carrying water from one place to another. They were built as part of the Kiewa Hydro-electric Scheme and form an integral part of the water supply for generating environmentally-friendly electricity.
These trails give you access to the Bogong High Plains and can take you to places for wonderful photos and picnics.
For the serious rider, there are a couple of trails that will bring you off the high plains and down to Mount Beauty – either via Tawonga Huts, Fainter Spur and Big Hill or over Mt Nelse, Timms Spur and Bogong Creek Saddle – both fantastic long day rides to be done as a group.

In the windswept Southern Mountains out by Bogong’s brow

The flowers and native grasses stretch from sky to sky
Unmarred by Man’s destruction – farming passed it by.
For the raging winter blizzards stayed the axe and chain
And spared the Bogong High Plains from the awful bloody pain
Of the clearing and the torching and the weeds and salt and dust
Of the foreign crops a-growing, filled with mites and rust.
And then the spring-time melts the snows, and the swollen brooks are gushing
Into creeks and mighty rivers – to the Murray they go rushing
Daisies are a carpet, Black Cockies screech on by The parakeets are dashing through the crystal of the sky.
The seasons keep on rolling, but the High Plains stay the same
Through the scorching summer days to the icy winter rain
People seldom visit, unless it’s peace they seek And lovers swear their wedding vows out by Watchbed Creek.
Now mortals come and go in the twinkling of an eye
It only takes a moment beneath the mountain sky
But the snow gums grow forever and the granite weathers slow
In the freezing winter winds, beneath the ice and snow.
Yes the cycle keeps on turning, yet the land remains the same
Timeless and eternal, impossible to maim
And when I’ve shed this mortal coil and left the din and row
Just leave me for the wild things, out by Bogong’s brow.

JUN 20th Charlie Brown Mountainside Photographic - JUL 11th Exhibition. Location is at Turkshead Gallery, 317 Wodonga place, Albury. It’s the building on the left at the start of Noreuil Park just over the bridge heading into Albury.
SEP 5th It’s a Saturday – and it will be the celebration of the 60’s kids turning Sixty! Kerry, Westie, Erin, Lynnie, Debb, Melissa, Bondie, Lisa, Fi, Gayle & Jenny! At The Man.
