e knew it was going to be a tough year when we lost our summer to bushfires. However we’re not sure anyone expected a double whammy when COVID-19 came to town. (Well, not literally speaking at time of printing - and fingers crossed it stays away!)
Now our local businesses are doing it extra tough, with many having no choice but to shut their doors for an unknown period of time. We are an innovative little community though, and our business owners have shown us that, by tweaking their offerings, they can stay open, albeit in a different kind of way.
So in case you haven’t heard or seen what’s on offer at present, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of what our businesses are doing, and how you can continue to support them from afar.

Mount Beauty Bakery remains open with their regular selection for take away only. Operating from 6:30am and going through until about 2pm unless business warrants staying open a little later.
Bombay Velvet are open daily from 5pm until 9pm for take away meals - you can order by giving them a call on 0456 742 125 or 0426 843 811.
You unfortunately can’t currently share a beer with Dave at the Dederang Hotel, but you can drop in for takeaway meals - Chicken Parmis, Steak Sandwiches and Battered Fish - from 5.30pm until 7.30pm and pick up takeaway drinks between 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
While you can’t sit in and enjoy a meal
If you’re in Falls Creek, the Frying Pan Inn is offering an extensive menu of frozen takeaway meals and drinks from the bottle shop. You can place an order by calling 0491 492 482 and drop in to pick them up from9am to 5pm, seven days a week. Their
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

Sassy Road’s doors may be closed, but they are still very much open for business! Aquestion that is probably on everyone’s lips. And a lot of how well we do in the next few months will be governed by how well we think about any given situation and by how well we treat the people around us.
We have all recently witnessed some of the worst examples of human frailty –ignorance and selfishness – in the hoarding of toilet paper, pasta and soap. What in the world prompted this and who the hell thought that a shed full of toilet paper would stop you getting crook?
An elderly retired couple do their buying on Pension Day. They use two rolls of toilet paper a fortnight. How do you think they felt when they get to the shops and there is not a scrap of toilet paper to be found. I am disgusted that people in the town would hoard like this. Each and every one of you should be ashamed. And the rumours of bus-loads of out-of-towners being the guilty shoppers doesn't really cover it all.
This town is full of clear thinking, kind, caring people who live here because it is a caring community where we all respect each other. Fortunately the self-serving bigots don’t usually last that long.
The state of play at the moment has thrown a few curved balls at us – and the situation is something we can all adjust to. One valued comment was that the latest problem was caused by dogs- ‘so that the owners could stay home and spend more time with them!’ Not a bad way to spend your day – taking care of your family and your pets.

What seems a lifetime ago now… and a ridiculously distant memory because life has been overtaken with other matters! The bush fires! The Mount Beauty community were happy and relieved in the knowledge that they could rely on our local Fire Brigade to ‘be’ there.
Mount Beauty Rescue and Fire Brigade were overwhelmed by the generosity and support from the local community and whilst they do not look for thanks or praise in any form it is always very heartening to receive it! And there was plenty on offer lately with the community showing their support and appreciation in many ways.
The Alpine Observer published the original of this article as a letter a couple of weeks ago. The letter talked of community members delivering biscuits and cakes to the station for the firemen whilst the local grade 5 and 6 primary school children had sent letters of thanks and showed great insight for what the firefighters give up to protect our community. The letters are displayed at the station. The letter also related how West Peak placed a Fireman’s boot on the counter and collected donations for the brigade one Saturday night.
Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?
Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
Plus, Damien Heman devised a great scheme on a Go Fund Me page. The Community and anybody else were able to donate money which was subsequently given to Mount Beauty and other local brigades with the proviso that the money be ploughed back into the local community. It can be spent on a celebratory meal or a local BBQ or anything that the brigade chooses.
And then Sam Sozio and the team at Hi Lux Technical Services surprised us all with a very generous donation in appreciation of the work the local brigades do.
Elene Wood says she can’t fight fires, but she can bake cakes. She went to town doing just that and raised money through sales at the Tennis Open, The Gather Festival, and via the local radio. A truly mammoth effort and a donation gratefully received by Mount Beauty CFA and other brigades.

Mount Beauty Gliding Club Suspend Operations because of the COVID-19 Virus.
Mount Beauty Gliding Club ceased all gliding operations on 26th March in response to the increasing prevalence of the COVID-19 virus and the associated government requirements aimed at reducing the spread of the virus.
This unfortunately prevents the Mount Beauty Gliding Club’s usual Easter gliding activities of providing glider winch launching for members and visitors.
The Club will resume gliding when the threat of the COVID-19 subsides and it hopes that everyone keeps in touch by email or phone and where possible; ‘stay at home’ and practise ‘social distancing’ and look after yourself and those around you. •
It comes with a heavy heart that we provide this update regarding the 2020 Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Due to the ongoing health warnings from State and Federal Governments, we have decided not to run this year’s doorknock and roadside collection in the Upper Kiewa Valley. The health of our collectors and CFA members is always forefront and I wish to thank everyone who assists every year.
There are still ways to donate though –and because there are no Good Friday collections, your support is even more important. At Mount Beauty Toy Library we think that borrowing toys rather than buying all your own is a good way to reduce your carbon foot print. (It also saves you money!). Membership is annual and renewed with the financial year. The cost is $40 per family - and for first time families with children under one year it is free!) Membership gives access to borrowing a large range of toys - anything from Tonka trucks, to puzzles, dolls and even big toys like bikes and scooters. The party box includes a set of reusable plastic plates, bowls, cups and serving bowls. We also have a large range of big toys for groups of children such as a giant connect four and water play tables plus a set of children's chairs and tables which could all be used for parties too.

The Irish Golfer (https://irishgolfer.ie/) is a very good on-line golfing magazine that covers everything golf in Ireland – and other parts of the world. Just the sort of read that good golfers love.
Back on the 17th February, they published an article written by a bloke called John Craven. It transpires that John Craven is the partner of a local lady Alex Dalkin and John was in town visiting the family during the fires in January. He gives Mount Beauty a good wrap “…a quaint tourist village…” and “Mount Beauty boasts a beautiful country parkland course littered with kangaroos and swooping magpies…” and then went on to relate just how much water is needed to keep our greens green.

It is a sad state of affairs that just about every activity that is listed here has been cancelled or at best, postponed. As your Editor, I have left the list in place – simply to re-inforce the fact that under normal circumstances, this area has lots to offer our community and our visitors – when they are able to return. In order to achieve optimum handling from your vehicle, from everyday driving to making emergency manoeuvres, tyre pressure needs to be at the proper inflation level.
