he heading is something of a mouthful – yet never-the-less a very important statement. Running an event that enables residents and visitors to walk/jog/run to the top of Victoria’s highest with the safety and security of route marshals with first aid and radio support is no mean feat.
This year, on Sunday 8th of March, the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club ran the 42nd Mt Bogong Conquestathon which is the trip from Mountain Creek Picnic Ground up the Staircase to the Summit of Mt Bogong and return via Eskdale Spur and Camp Creek Gap to Mountain Creek – a trip of around 20km with about 1300 metres of climbing. 233 entrants were registered with 225 completing the event. This was a great attendance given the rain that came and went several times during the day.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
The Upper Kiewa Valley Lions members were praised and thanked for the smooth running of the event by many of the participants. Unfortunately it rained on our
parade a couple of times throughout the day with eight entrants withdrawing along the way. While the Conquestathon is really an event/experience and not a competition, there is always a large group of enthusiastic runners, so every entrant is timed out and in. So - Results:

Great times by all of the competitive contestants – especially considering the slippery conditions. President of UKV Lions, Rod Hyde, said his proudest moment of the day was handing over a medallion with the number ‘42’ on it to Simon Goss, competing in his 42nd Conquestathon out of 42 - which means he has done every one. What an amazing effort!

During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

were disappointed about the lack of views, but vowed to come back next year. Thanks to all the volunteers, especially our first aiders, Maureen Hardidge and Ken Pickard, the bushwalkers from Murray Valley Bushwalking Club in Albury/Wodonga, who assisted at the Summit, and the Lake Hume Amateur Radio Club providing radio communications. It was pleasing just how many walkers and runners, reaching the summit, were happy and cheerful, grateful for the cooler conditions, and many said a heartfelt thanks to the volunteers at the summit, where it was cold and misty. A lot of people drove up from Melbourne, or made the trip from Albury, Wodonga or surrounding regional areas to walk or run the Big Fella (Mt Bogong), and UKV Lions are indebted to those people for making it to the North-East and boosting tourist numbers in the area. There was a real buzz in Mount Beauty, Tawonga South and Tawonga over this long weekend. •

Your Ed did a Trails, Tales and Tucker Guided Walk last Saturday the 14th down past Wallace’s Hut the day after Falls Creek had hosted our own version of the Regional Longest Lunch. It was with great delight that I was able to say to the group “Do you realise that there were 200 people having lunch here yesterday!” The group were astonished. There was not a scrap of litter - not any remnant left that might have indicated what a great time was had by all who attended. This is a wonderful credit to the team that organised the lunch and to the team that volunteered on the lunch.
This version of the Longest Lunch is the seventh – with the first lunch in recent times attracting 65 guests. The success of the Falls Creek Longest Lunch is due in no small to the talents of the caterer, the inimitable Barry Iddles of Sorrento Catering Company, the operator of Elk Restaurant in the village.
The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred.
Another aspect of the success of the lunch is the dedication of Heather Rookes – who has worked with Barry on many occasions – and who enjoys his professionalism. Heather, with her Chef husband Phil and the help of several other community members have engaged quite a few local students to come and volunteer on this wonderful opportunity – which provides the young folk with a quality professional experience – and their efforts were absolutely appreciated.
New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.
Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’
The setting at Wallace’s Hut would have to be one of the most unique places for lunch, surrounded by beautiful gnarly snow gums and beside the hut, built in 1889 and classified by the National Trust.
ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different. Falls Creek Service

Wind, mist, rain and near-freezing temperatures didn't stop almost 1,100 riders from finishing Peaks Challenge Falls Creek on Sunday March 8th.
Around 1,300 started from the Falls Creek village in heavy fog and a temperature of 4.5 degrees. However, it didn't keep the first wave of riders from making a strong start and topping Mount Hotham before 10am.
The tail riders also got on with the job, with all riders passing over Tawonga Gap before 10am.
While heavy rainfall and hail at the top of Falls Creek village put a dampener on the Junior Peaks ride, there were some dry spells in the valleys that helped riders keep
warm before going headfirst into the mist at Mount Hotham.
The warmest weather of the day was forecast for Omeo, and it was there where the temperature peaked at 15 degrees at 2pm. After a few years of warm weather we were due a chilly one.
At around 1pm the lead riders turned onto WTF corner and started the long haul up the back of Falls Creek. Mark O'Brien was the first male to cross the finish with a time of 7 hours and 38 minutes.
On International Women's Day, Justine Barrow was the first female to finish and crossed the line in 8 hours and 48 minutes. As more finishers reached the finish line the supporters grew and cries of joy from riders got louder. After a long, cold day in the saddle everyone was thrilled to finish.
Among those was Cameron Hughes from CAMS Cycling Collective who towed a car tyre up the back of Falls Creek in an effort to raise awareness and funds for MND research.
By the time the Lanterne Rouge crossed the line at 8:15pm, riders were well on their way to warming up and reminiscing about one of the rides of their lives.
For the second time, Peaks Challenge crowned Kings and Queens of the Mountain for the fastest rider up each of the climbs.
Tawonga Gap went to Justine Barrow and Jay Vine. Mount Hotham went to Justine Barrow with Jay Vine and Mark O'Brien equalling their times. The Falls Creek climb went to Bizzy Buzzworth and Mark O'Brien.
Peaks Challenge Falls Creek wouldn't be possible without the help from our volunteers. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to help people achieve their goal on the bike, including the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty and Bicycle Network's regular workshop crew who work for weeks to make the ride happen.

2020 was another unforgettable Peaks Challenge Falls Creek and we can't wait to see what happens next year in this amazing part of the world.
It was recently announced at a small gathering of board members and staff and the Mount Beauty Community Bank that several students have received financial support to pursue their tertiary studies in 2020 and beyond.
This Scholarship support has come from Kiewa Mitta Murray Community Enterprises Limited through its business arm, the Mount Beauty & District Community Bank.
Tovah Harley-Wilson has been granted the Dave Harley Memorial Scholarship valued at $5,000 per year for three years and will undertake nursing studies at Charles Sturt University, Albury-Wodonga. This is a great honour for Tovah as this memorial scholarship was created to honour her well-loved grand-father Dave Harley – a long term resident in the community and one of the initial board members of the Community Bank.
Special two year bursaries of $5,000 per year each were also granted to Amy Whitehead of Towong Upper and Claudia McKimmie of Cudgewa, whose families were severely affected by the recent wildfire crisis in the Upper Murray.
“Our young people are our future, and the Board of Directors strongly believes that local young people deserve the best support possible to help them forge their careers and achieve their dreams,” commented Andrew Randell, the Chairman of the Board of Directors. “An investment in education yields great long-term dividends and by helping our young people gain access to tertiary education, the returns to the student, their families and their local community are hugely significant,” he added.

The scholarship program is an ongoing project for the Board and banking staff of our local Community Bank. It awarded its first scholarship in 2013 and has since provided scholarship funding in excess of $145,000 which has provided tertiary education opportunities to many local young people.

While many of our readers know Phil who grew up in Mount Beauty, not so many Australians outside the local Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club know Victor, who spent winter here several years ago as the club’s coach in residence …and …‘what is Nattvasan 90?’ is a question most people will ask.
The biggest cross country ski event in the world is the 90km Vasaloppet held in Sweden, with over 15,000 skiers in the main event and more than 40, 000 skiers taking part in other events held in the week leading up to the main race. One of these is the Nattvasan. It is held on the same 90km course as the main race, with the slight difference that skiers start in the dark at 8pm wearing headlamps and must take part as teams of two. In a close finish Phil and Victor finished just before midnight and were given the time of 3:53:22, the same time as the winners. While Phil and Victor finished on Friday, most of the 524 teams finished the next day, with team Fridaforsarna ‘signing the list’ just before 7:30 the next morning with the time of 11:29:17. Starting an hour and a half after sunset … and finishing an hour after sunrise!
