TStanding next to the Summit Cairn on the top of Victoria’s highest gives you the feeling that ‘you are the tallest person in the state’ and it feels good. But getting there is a little different.

This annual event, held on the Labour Day Weekend, this year Sunday 8th March, is a well supervised activity for people of all ages with a healthy level of fitness. Young children must be accompanied by an adult.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
This is a 20km walk/run to the top of Mount Bogong, Victoria's highest peak. The Starting Gate, at the Mountain Creek Picnic Grounds, Mountain Creek Road, Tawonga is open from 6:45am to 8:30am, and on the day entries will be taken from 6am. Participants will receive a medallion at the finish of the event, and fruit and water are included in the entry fee. At the time of writing 75 entries had been received on line, and the interest expressed means that around 250 people are expected to take part.
This will be the 42nd running of the event and all participants must register prior to starting. Location: Start/Finish is at the Mountain Creek Picnic Area.
To get there: From Mount Beauty: Take Damms Road north to the intersection with Mountain Creek Road (5km), turn right and follow the bitumen to the picnic area (14km).
Entry Fee: Adults - $25. Juniors (under 16 years) - $10. Family - $60. This event is a fund raiser for the UKV Lions Club.
Safety & Checkpoints: There are manned checkpoints around the course as follows: Picnic area start; start of Staircase Spur; Bivouac Hut (cut-off time 11am); the Summit (cut-off time 1pm); top of Eskdale Spur, Camp Creek Gap and finish at the picnic area.
Clothing to wear & take: Normal walking gear, but it could be cold on top so take a water proof jacket, long pants and warm polar fleece type top, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, well worn-in boots or shoes (track shoes are fine) and quality socks.
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig
Equipment to take: Day pack, two litres of water at least, food supplies, basic personal 1st Aid, mobile phone, camera and watch. It is recommended that all participants have adequate ambulance insurance cover.
The organising body is the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club Inc with support from the Murray Valley Bushwalkers, Lake Hume Amateur Radio Group and Parks Victoria.
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

The human determination to keep going is incredible. It’s meant we’ve survived even when in the early days our next meal or drink seemed too many miles away.
Recently it’s that same inspirational determination that’s kept our friends in the Victorian High Country going. Devastated by bushfires, they’ve weathered the initial storm, rolled up their sleeves and ploughed ahead with putting things back together.
You’ll no doubt draw on the same human determination as you take on Peaks Challenge Falls Creek. There’ll be moments when the Falls Creek village seems too far away, but if you just get up the next rise or make it to the next rest stop…
TThere’s another quality that we’ll see in abundance on the ride: generosity. It’s helping each other, particularly in times of need - that makes us human. There’ll be countless examples of this out on the road on Sunday as riders let someone sit on their wheel, provide a word of encouragement or share a gel. Perhaps the act of generosity that requires the most acknowledgment today is you are still coming to join us at Falls Creek despite all the negative postbushfire talk. You’ve shown the locals they’re not alone and that you have their backs. It’s this human spirit of togetherness that makes sure everyone not only survives, but also thrives.
he years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.
Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’

The Victorian High Plains are like no other. From the rolling hill-tops to the deep valleys, the ride presents no less than 4000 meters of climbing and a 13-hour deadline – it’s a personal challenge few have dared to consider, let alone conquer.
Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.
The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.
At Falls Creek we love these mountains, but on any given day they will test you. What the mountains don’t throw at you, the weather will! Our mountains will exhaust you, punish you and push you to the limits of your endurance. The reward though is, as you return to our village and the finish line approaches, it is knowing you have achieved a feat that few others have. Well done.

Back in the mid 2000’s AGL decided to dig a 6.5kilometre long tunnel that would be five metres in diameter. By my Handymath. com calculator, that works out to 12762,716,912 cubic metres of rock –which was rated at about 200mpa (with average concrete rated at 20 to 30 mpa).
This incredible amount of rock – which had not been designated for any purpose –would surely be enough to seal the 32km of the Bogong High Plains Road from Falls Creek to Shannonvale. And so the process started and as a result of that sealing –many activities have now been able to take place.
One of the first and still the biggest event is what was then called the Bicycle Network Three Peaks that took place on Sunday 7th
March 2010. 1852 riders entered, with some electing to ride from Falls Creek to Dinner Plain and others electing to do the second half –Dinner Plain to Falls Creek. The weather on Saturday was great – but Sunday – Oh dear! It rained and it was cold – especially climbing Hotham –with many pulling out at Dinner Plain
Those that came on to Falls Creek had to contend with the hill at WTF corner (after riding around 200km) and then had to deal with the rock splinters that were sticking to tyres and causing flats –many, many flat tyres. But those that did make it had really achieved – and we mean ‘really achieved!’
There are many fantastic stories of the Peaks (as it is now known). Early in the piece, your Ed spoke to a Scottish guy, who explained: “My brother is in Canada and he said we had better go and do that ride in Australia.” So one flew from Canada, the other from Scotland.
Over the years many locals have ridden the event. Names like Bernie McArdle, Andy Mero, Justin Hanlon and Larry Franklin are just a few that come to mind. Then later we have Brian Peacock from Rocky Valley Bikes and Meredith Iaria; Ron
Gallagher; Mandy Bland; Atilla Kerestes; Shaun Power (having done if five or six times) Kevin Bradley and Iain Morrison.
Larry mentioned that when he got to Omeo a couple of years back “he was cooked!” After a pie and a pint of milk, and a close look at the others who were going on “they look as bad as I feel –so if they can do it, so can I!”
The fires this year put the cat among the pigeons and while some events in January were cancelled, our Peaks Challenge is going ahead –thanks to the dedicated efforts of the team at Bicycle Network, great work by our local shires and Parks Vic and the host of volunteers who will assist prior to and during the event.

On Saturday 29th February, the Tawonga Mount Beauty Bowls Club played the Corryong Number 1 side in the Grand Final of the Ovens and Murray B4 section, at the Wodonga Bowls Club.

Club Vice-President George Eldridge said that it was a very proud day for his small club and its perseverance had finally paid off. Even though the Pennant season has not finished the club will continue to hold sessions (weather permitting) every Thursday from 7pm – 9pm (reverting to 2pm – 4pm on the same day when daylight savings ends), Friday afternoons from 2pm – 4pm and at the same time on Sunday afternoons. As Summer begins to roll into Autumn the annual Regional Longest Lunch at Falls Creek returns for discerning diners looking to sample an exquisite menu in the stunning surrounds of the High Country. Taking place next Friday 13th against the idyllic backdrop of Wallace’s Hut, this Italian inspired feast has been curated by legendary Falls Creek Caterer Barry Iddles. A last minute surge in entries saw a stacked field for the annual inter-schools regional MTB races at Falls Creek last Friday. A bright and sunny day greeted racers as they made their way up the hill to the Rocky Valley foreshore for the multi-lap XCO challenge. With nearly 150 entrants this year (102 last year), the foreshore was a hive of activity as the students prepared for the varied course and individual schools readied their pit areas. With schools in attendance from across the region and beyond it was a long journey for many of the racers with one small contingent coming from Ivanhoe Grammar!
The addition this year of Grades 3/4, multiple courses were prepared by Steve Tambo of the Falls Creek Ops team to suit all ages and abilities. A keen and experienced mountain biking teacher from Wodonga described the course “as one of the best she had seen” – which was a nice wrap for Tambo.
Taking advantage of the fast flowing trails on the Lakeside area racing began at 9am following an hour of course practice. Falls Creek Event Supervisor Nick Buckley said “It’s fantastic to see so many young riders travel from all over the region to experience MTB racing and the trails at Falls Creek. The attitude and spirit of all the racers is a credit to their schools and we can’t wait to see them again next year for an even bigger

event.” As a marshal, it was encouraging to hear comments from the riders like “Can I pass please” to the rider in front. And another “Appreciate your marshalling for us” as he whistled past.
The most junior group of riders were first to take to the track and were clearly excited to get the race underway! The final race of the day saw Grades 9-12 take to the course simultaneously and tackle the most challenging loop of the day. The big surprise of the day was Riley Corke from Wangaratta who had the fastest lap times of the event on the senior course despite being in Grades 9/10. Clearly one to watch out for in future.

Horse racing is something a little more than a past-time in Australia. It involves business, owners, jockeys, grounds staff, bookies, lots and lots of punters. Almost every town has a track and at least once a year, there is a race meeting. The big city meetings are popular (like the Cup), but some-what overwhelming. That’s why a country Picnic Race Day is so appealing.
As a result of extreme temperatures experienced during summer in recent years, the meeting has been moved from its traditional first Saturday in January. Therefore, this year's Mount Beauty & District Community Bank Dederang Races will take place on Saturday March 14th.
This undiscovered gem of Victoria’s alpine region with a thriving total population of 98, Dederang boasts a local pub affectionately known as ‘The Ranga’ as well as a general store (with great coffee), golf course and bowling green, football and cricket ground, tennis courts, primary
school and the all-important race track. For this one weekend in January the population swells to the thousands as many come from far and wide to join in the festivities of the biggest local event of the year.
This year will be the 155 running of the Cup which is now supported by the Mount Beauty & District Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank. The day will feature a six race card, with the feature race being the Milestone Chemicals Dederang Cup. Congratulations to Milestone Chemicals – as this is their 29th year of sponsoring the Dederang Races. The day will also feature a hotly contested ‘Cheeky Bits Fashions on the Field’ competition, children’s entertainment by Kelly Sports, the famous Madman’s Mile and the Tugof-War championship. Locals and visitors can also enjoy food stalls and displays of produce from the local region.

On Sunday the 1st of March Mount Beauty Swimming Club held the 6th and final Southern Pennant meet for 2019/2020. A great day saw well over 200 people attend from Corryong, Myrtleford, Rutherglen, Beechworth and Tallangatta. As a club this year we have been lucky to have strong numbers with over 60 swimmers representing the club over the year, including 57 on Sunday alone.
The highlight of the past week and a half culminating on Sunday, was a raffle organised by Mount Beauty Swim Club raising funds to pass on to Corryong Swim Club. Amazing support by local businesses as well as some bigger donations saw us with well over $2000 in prizes. While we are still finalising the total, it will be in excess of $3000. A huge thanks to Lee Docherty for her work making the raffle what it was and to everyone who donated and purchased tickets.
Our club championships will be held over 2 nights on the 11th and 16th of March with a presentation night to follow on March 25th. Although our Southern Carnivals have concluded for the season, we still have swimmers competing in district and regional levels of school swimming as well as eight swimmers heading to Melbourne on the 21st of March for the 2020 All Junior Championships. We wish all of them well.
