Peaks Challenge

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

Up to 2,000 cyclists are currently gearing up for Bicycle Network’s Peaks Challenge Falls Creek on Sunday 8th March, one of the world’s toughest alpine bike rides.

FALLS CREEK MUSEUM

Riders will have only 13 hours to complete the gruelling 235 kilometre course, incorporating more than 4,000 vertical metres of climbing over three major ascents.

The looping course starts at Slalom Plaza at Falls Creek and descends down the mountain towards Tawonga Gap, over Mount Hotham then finishes with a climb up the back of Falls Creek to return to Slalom Plaza.

Peaks Challenge Falls Creek is the highlight of the Victorian Alps ‘green season’ and brings in millions of dollars to the region each year. It attracts riders from all over Australia and overseas, with riders coming from as close as Bright and Mount Beauty and as far as Europe and the UK. Figures from the 2015 event showed the average age of riders to be 41 years, with 60% of entrants coming from interstate.

With this event now in its eleventh year, Bicycle Network is continuing a long history of working closely with local councils, Victoria Police, VicRoads and Parks Victoria to implement road closures and traffic changes to ensure safety for all locals and event participants. Refer Notice Page 6 of this paper. •

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

The North East is renowned for gourmet produce, excellent wines and spectacular settings. Combine all three in a memorable culinary experience at the Regional World’s Longest Lunch set in the spectacular surroundings of the Bogong High Plains and Falls Creek.

Catered by renowned restaurateur Barry Iddles, the event incorporates a delectable set menu of three courses, drinks and canapés inspired by much of the aforementioned quality local produce.

In 2020 a secret location promises to deliver once more in matching those idyllic standards for an afternoon to remember. Make a fabulous weekend of it, with a great range of additional activities to add to your Regional Longest Lunch Experience.

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

State XCO Champs

Sunday 16th February saw the return of the Victorian State XCO champs to Falls Creek. This ever popular racing format sees bikers going head to head on a technical and challenging course over a set number of laps up and down the mountain. The course team at Falls Creek worked flat out on the lead up to the event and racers faced a challenging track that included a mass start through the village up to the aqueduct to get the lungs working. The route then took them out to the Lake and back via Lakeview, Turbine and Vortex. Spectators were treated to regular views of their racers as the riders descended into Slalom Plaza via the stairs to start a fresh lap. With over 150 racers in attendance, many were surprised at the technicality of the course. The addition of some light rain and drizzle on Sunday morning only added to the challenge with several riders pushing a little too hard being caught out on some of the damp rock gardens.

Mount Beauty Service

In the Elite Women’s race Falls Creek regular Kathryn McInerney pushed hard and was just able to keep Katherine Hosking back in 3rd by the slimmest of margins (4 Seconds!). However it wasn’t enough to stop Karen Hill taking the win – completing the race a clear minute ahead of the rest of the field. It was a different story in the Men’s elite field with Robbie Hucker romping home with the win by an impressive 2.5 minute margin over Russel Nankervis in 2nd and Cooper Jessen in 3rd.

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

Looking ahead to the next event – junior riders have the opportunity to emulate these elite racers with a Schools MTB

The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion of Loyalty will be offered by Councillor Tony Keeble of the Alpine Shire. COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Bushfire Relief

As this article is prepared, (and it should have gone out in the last edition of 7th Feb), it is hard to remember the state of chaos some people were experiencing – fanned by the overzealous media reporting of the fires.

This is not to make light of the horrendous catastrophic conditions our neighbours experienced – and many locally were distressed and evacuated when the time came. This meant we went from a normal busy holiday season to a ghost town in less than two days.

Whilst there were not any fires in this valley that impacted property, the fact that folk did evacuate meant a severe loss of business for just about every business on town. This and the wages that were lost has a severe impact on the economy of the town

– something that will take some time to recover – of ever!

To help relieve some of the pain, the FoodWorks chain have chosen to support Mount Beauty FoodWorks with a donation of $2,500 which in turn Nick & Karen have decided to convert to vouchers to donate to fellow retailers/traders in the Mount Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South communities to help with their burden caused by the massive loss of revenue in January. The recipient can choose to use the vouchers themselves or perhaps – as the accompanying letter suggested - use them as a promotional incentive in their business to get people to spend more with them and get a free $20 voucher to spend in the supermarket. We hope this will in some small way help to revitalise our economy. Many local businesses are choosing to distribute these vouchers among their patrons – usually by way of a small raffle. The vouchers must

be returned to the store by no later than Tuesday 10th March.

Also, in conjunction with FoodWorks, Karen and Nick have launched an initiative to enable their customers to donate as they shop by adding a couple of dollars to their shopping - as per the flier in store. The important point being 100% of donations will be returned to Bushfire affected communities where a FoodWorks operates, such as ours. These communities include Mallacoota, Omeo & Orbost amongst others. Karen and Nick have also committed that 100% of the funds received from these donations will be in turn reinvested into the community.

This incentive, plus the ‘Spirit of the Community’ points system we have in our local FoodWorks is another clear indicator that shopping locally is not only good for the wallet, it is also good for the community and for the soul! •

This photo, from the Lions Club Lookout clearly shows Mt Bogong hidden behind that wall of smoke – which can be daunting for some. Pic - Ken Bell.

The inaugural Gather Festival held recently up at the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park aimed to bring people together and celebrate valley lifeand ‘gather’ they certainly did!

Over 500 people attended the music, arts and mountain biking event run by the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley, Riff Raffs and Team Mount Beauty with perfect weather conditions and hundreds of colourful flags setting the perfect backdrop for what would become a memorable day for all the right reasons.

It kicked off at 9:30am, with 100 mountain bike riders making the most of the shuttles so they could ride the trails before hitting the festival afterwards.

With the music side of the event starting an hour later, local food and beverage vendors were on-site feeding the hungry crowds, as well as market stalls featuring locally-made treasures for people to browse, and it wasn’t long before the venue was buzzing with people.

Audiences were treated to performances by local musicians such as the Mount Beauty & District Community Stage Band and the Spooky Ukies and former locals Adam Grok and Ro George, as well as artists from across Australia bringing their variety of musical genres to the two stages for a whopping 12 hours.

Whether it was the cruisy folk tunes from the likes of Richard Perso, Tom Richardson and Mitch King, indie pop songs by Jessica Lorraine and Tanya George, or rock’n’roll by Sarah McLeod and Dallas Frasca, there were certainly no complaints when it came to the musical performances on stage.

FOR THE COMMUNITY

A stand out on the day was DJ Jarrah, otherwise known as local talent Jarrah Forrer, who volunteered his time and officially got the dance floor happening as day turned to dusk.

Bringing some comedic relief to the stage were MCs Shorty and Bushy, who also generously donated their time and put in a huge effort for the event’s 12 hour duration. If you ask anyone who was there, they’ll tell you there was just a positive vibe all day long - everyone was happy, relaxed and loving valley life, just as the organisers intended.

Of course, the festival would not have been possible if it weren’t for the droves of volunteers who spent hours upon hours organising, setting up, ensuring things ran smoothly on the day, and packing up afterwards.

From the committee to those who volunteered just for a few days, it was an incredible effort and one the community appreciates.

The inaugural Gather Festival was also generously supported by the former Sweet Valley Sounds committee and our local businesses, and again - it just wouldn’t have been possible without them.

FALL LINES

Taxi Hours

Mount Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South is very fortunate to have a taxi service serving the area – including Albury/Wodonga and Falls Creek. And, like every other business in town, there are limits to the amount of hours one can work. Therefore Roly and Julie have made some minor changes to their hours of operation.

The on-demand taxi hours are now 8am to 9pm Monday to Thursday. Still 8am to 1am Friday and Saturday. But, there will be NO taxi service on Sunday. Special Bookings may be made outside these hours by prior arrangement.

These hours don't affect hire car transfers which operate everyday by prior booking such as High Plains transfers, airport shuttles, Bright, and transfers from Albury/ Wodonga to Falls Creek for snow bookings. There will be a message on the taxi phone advising of this, as well as an option to record a message. Roly and Julie will respond to these messages promptly if they are a booking request or other time-sensitive issue. Thanks for your support. Roly and Julie. •

The Songs That Made Memphis

Brought to you by the Sun Rising Band and presented to Mount Beauty by Upper Kiewa Valley Regional Arts. Mount Beauty Community Centre, Saturday 22nd February, 8pm.

The Songs That Made Memphis takes famous tales and hilarious anecdotes from Sun Records artists, and its creator, Sam Phillips. The narrative and music combination is designed to inform and educate the audience while rocking them senseless.

Sun Rising walks the audience through a chronological tour of Memphis’ famed Sun Records, focusing on the early period 1950-1957 and touching on artists like Ike Turner, Howlin’ Wolf, BB King, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and more.

“Melbourne band Sun Rising is rocking with an utter belter of a show. The Songs That Made Memphis is an exuberant, potent,

homage to the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll that has the audience jiving beyond the exit.” InDaily. Com.au

More Young Talent

The young people in our community never cease to amaze us, and we love hearing stories about them kicking goals in all aspects of life!

The latest achievement is by local lad Harry Stripeikis, who has been selected for the Australian Junior Basketball squad to play in New Zealand this Easter - a great reward for all of his hard work.

Over the past 12 months, Harry has been playing basketball on Friday nights in his local representative team of Wodonga in the Victorian Junior Basketball League, with the games mostly played in Melbourne.

Throughout the year, he also attended skills days where he was selected for the North East Academy and the Basketball Victoria Country Gold Nugget Camp. Harry then went on to be selected for the Victorian Bushrangers Under-14 team to compete against interstate teams and New Zealand in the Australian Country Cup in Albury recently. From Australian Country Cup, Harry was one of four players from Victoria selected to represent Australia in New Zealand in April this year - and incredible effort!

Along with camps throughout the year, Harry has shown his commitment to basketball by training up to four nights a week and playing locally in Wodonga, and in the off season and Christmas holidays practised his skills, and kept fit with swimming and visiting Dan twice a week at Unbreakable Fitness. Good luck in New Zealand Harry! •

Tips for Better Living

Use Cloth Serviettes

Brought to you by Lee and Caroline at Gather and Harvest

Not only are cloth serviettes more durable, but they also save money and are reusable. Re-using items reduces your rubbish output, which means less energy is used in transporting and processing your waste. Plus, using cloth serviettes makes your dining experience feel a little more fancy –even if it is only a BBQ. •

Keeping your Pet Cool

Brought to you by Lisa and David at LD’s Pet Care

• All pets should be kept in cool, shady areas. It is ideal to bring pets indoors on hot days. If you're feeling warm, chances are they are too.

• Provide plenty of fresh, cool water in large water containers. Be sure to provide numerous sources of water in case one is spilt. Ensure the containers are in the shade and add some ice to the water to keep it cool. Place a clam shell pool in the shade and fill it with water so your dog can wade in the water to keep cool. If your pet's share your yard with children, remember to have all necessary precautions in place, including fencing, in order to keep children safe. •

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.

The Importance of Sleep:

Brought to you by Emma at Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage

Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Sleep plays a crucial role in the repair and maintenance of all body systems. During sleep, our brain undergoes a clean out of waste products from cells, our breathing and heart rate slow and blood pressure decreases, and hormones are released that aid in repairing tissues. Without adequate sleep, our performance plummets with daily activities, including fitness training, and necessary bodily processes are disrupted.

Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting.

This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

If you have any specific agenda items, please email http://joprothero@fallscreek.com.au. We look forward to seeing you all there. •

To help improve sleep, some recommendations are:

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

- Turn off all electronics an hour before bed, as blue light can disrupt your brain signals that indicate it's time for sleep. - Make the room as dark as possible. - Evaluate the noise level, or add a white noise machine or fan. - Develop a sleep routine, personal to your daily schedule and recovery needs. •

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart.

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all of the MR: more juggle

Bill was happy to lend the book and until now it was always returned – until this last 18 months. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt someone’s memory. Maintaining proper tyre pressure is important for many reasons other than reducing the potential of a flat tyre or a blowout.

In order to achieve optimum handling from your vehicle, from everyday driving to making emergency manoeuvres, tyre pressure needs to be at the proper inflation level.

Even a tyre that doesn't appear to be low on air can result in reduced vehicle handling and excessive tread wear.

Check your tyre pressure regularly

Perform a simple tyre inspection

Be aware of uneven wear of the tyre

Know what to look for when checking the wear-bars in the tyre!
