he National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.

n the last two Editions this paper published articles regarding our Mount Beauty Regulating Pondage and in edition six a notice from AGL advising that they were applying to reduce the speed limit on the Pondage to 5 knots. This application caused quite a deal of a stir in the community, especially allowing that the time for consultation and submissions closed on Saturday 25th January, 2020.

Realising that the area was a little preoccupied with fires, AGL have extended the deadline for submissions until Wednesday 4th of March 2020.

Just to reiterate, the Mount Beauty Regulating Pondage (to give it its correct title) is the last point of water flow through the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The Pondage regulates the flow of water back into the West Kiewa River - ironing out fluctuations in water flow when the scheme is generating and not generating power.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

and our visitors. The path around it is a fantastic for walking, jogging, cycling etc. The other facilities like BBQ’s, seats, playground, skate ramp, basketball courts, our sports ovals, the tennis club and the library are all benefactors of having this Pondage ‘on our doorstep.’

And the water adds another element – from swimming, kayaking, fishing, model boating and power boating in the form of water skiing. There are rules for power boating on the Pondage – like only two power boats at any one time and all must travel in an anticlock-wise direction. Experienced skiers would work together – only having one boat on the water while the other changed skier or rested.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. the speed limit on the Pondage should remain unchanged so that water-skiing, jet skiing and other power boat activities can continue.

Also, it is very important to take into account the fact that power boating on our Pondage rarely takes place more than a dozen times a year, usually weekends and holidays and never past sunset.

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

Despite The Weather

Falls Creek welcomed a huge field of expert and amateur riders for the 3rd round of the Victorian Gravity Enduro Tour last Sunday the 2nd of Feb. For season 2020 the event also featured as a qualifier for the renowned Enduro World Series. With not only the regional series but also international ranking points at stake, rider registrations were increased dramatically with entrants from across the State and the further afield.

After a hot and dusty practice session on Saturday, unseasonal mist and drizzle welcomed racers at the rider briefing on Sunday. This made many of the riders nervous about the conditions ahead on the challenging 30km course designed by the Ops team at Falls Creek. However, the weather began to clear mid-morning and the warming sunshine produced near ideal conditions for great racing.

ANZAC Day

The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.

In the female elite category Albury Local Julia Boer was edged off the podium by ACT rider Georgina Von Marburg in what was a closely fought battle between the two. It was a different story in the Men’s elite category though with Mount Beauty local Chris Panozzo delivering a convincing win to take the top step by over 50 secs from Jordan Powell.

Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’

Local riders were heavily represented in just about all of the other categories as well with Falls Creek Local Alex ‘Sandbagger’ Judd claiming the win in Sport category and Mount Beauty racer Laura Zagorski dominating the Veteran women field.

Falls Creek Event Supervisor Nick Buckley said "We're absolutely thrilled to have had over 210 registered riders for this event. Despite the best efforts of the weather all the riders were enjoying themselves and after slow start Falls Creek found some much needed sunshine and rewarded racers with some of the best trail conditions we’ve seen this year." •

ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different. Falls Creek Service

Vic State XCO Champs

After a great weekend of Gravity Enduro, we welcome a different breed of athlete to compete over the weekend of 15th and 16th February as Falls Creek hosts the Victorian State Cross Country Championships. Over 150 athletes are expected into the resort to take part in the official State XCO Championships and the final race in the Nine Round Victorian XCO series. The course will be tough and fast with many racers likely to be surprised by the technical features of the course at Falls Creek.

Following a mass start through the village, riders will be funnelled into Jump Start and heading to Rocky Valley Storage. The backdrop of Rocky Valley Dam will be unlikely to distract racers as the push for the final climb leads them up Turbine to the Vortex. Having recently been part of the Victorian Gravity Enduro this technical and difficult trail is sure to be a spectator highlight and a real challenge for the racers to negotiate. With riders lapping through Slalom Plaza and this being location of the official event village the atmosphere here will be fantastic.

Mount Beauty Service

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

Official practice day is on Saturday 15th February and racing commences at 9am on Sunday 16th. Registrations will remain open until next week and the entry list is expected to grow with many racers chasing the last opportunity for State Glory for this year. •

The address for the day will be offered by students from the Mount Beauty Secondary College. Speakers will be school captains, Katerina Trnka and Connor Vickers. At our local service, wreaths will be laid by many community representatives and members of the public are invited to do so if they wish. Following the service, everyone is invited to the Mount Beauty Senior Citizens Rooms for a BBQ Lunch, refreshments and the traditional activities (read two-up), plus a couple of beers and a few old stories. •

GATHER FESTIVAL

Our Community Together

The big day is almost here - the inaugural Gather Festival is happening tomorrow, Saturday 8th February, at the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park!

With the weather looking perfect for a day of live music, boutique market stalls, local food, children’s activities and mountain bike riding, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

The dedicated volunteer committee has been working almost two years towards their first event, which has been generously supported by a large number of local businesses, as well as major sponsorship from former local music festival, Sweet Valley Sounds.

If you have a Gather & Ride ticket, the shuttles will kick off at 9:30am so you can enjoy the live music while riding the trails until 3:30pm.

For all other general tickets, the gates open at 10:30am and trust us - this will be a solid 12 hours of music and entertainment, so make sure you’re there early on so you don’t

A Life to Remember

The ‘Sun Rising’ Band brings ‘The Songs That Made Memphis’ to Mount Beauty. – courtesy of the Upper Kiewa Valley Regional Arts - to be held at the Mount Beauty Community Centre, Saturday 22nd February, at 8pm.

The Songs That Made Memphis takes famous tales and hilarious anecdotes from Sun Records artists, and its creator, Sam Phillips. The narrative and music combination is designed to inform and educate the audience while rocking them senseless.

Sun Rising walks the audience through a chronological tour of Memphis’ famed Sun Records, focusing on the early period 1950-1957 and touching on artists like Ike Turner, Howlin’ Wolf, BB King, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and more.

A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. Friends are welcome to pass this invite on and it is understood that members of Lyn’s family will be in attendance. •

Australia Day celebrations across the Alpine Shire were a particularly meaningful gathering. For some, enjoying a barbecue brekkie and coming together to acknowledge some very special residents was their first opportunity to relax, following the bushfire emergency of the recent weeks.

became the local leader for the Girl Guides in Tawonga. Most of these groups she continues to support regularly.

In the last 30 years Hazel has also volunteered at the Australia Open, which is a particular passion of hers. New additions to her volunteering schedule include the local Op Shop, the ALPS group (Active Life Physical Social), driving local people with disabilities to appointments and visiting residents in the local nursing home. Hazel is regarded by all the groups she assists as a very reliable volunteer who is always willing to lend a hand – volunteering is in her blood. Hazel has a very long and distinguished history of volunteering in the local area. •

High Country Come Back

It was envisage that somewhere around 3000 people might attend the High Country Come Back gathering that was organised in six quick working days by Janelle Boynton and Melissa Antony from the Ovens Valley.

The venue was the Port Melbourne Timber Yards and surprise, surprise, just over 6200 visitors arrived on the day and enjoyed the 96 stalls representing High Country Victoria. Entry was free but the gold coin donation

ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

Ten stalls represented many businesses from the Upper Kiewa Valley and Falls Creek was represented by Lisa Logan and the Chamber of Commerce.

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
