GATHER FESTIVAL

2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

The Countdown is On

Round One - Falls Creek

Sarah Mcleod

TOhe National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.

nly two weeks to go until Gather Festival and if you don’t have your tickets yet, you might want to hurry because it’s gearing up to be an amazing day! If you’re not familiar with the line-up, here’s a quick run-down for you.

Dallas Frasca

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.

Sarah McLeod is the creative force behind ARIA Award winning, platinum selling rockers The Superjesus. With over 20 years in the industry she has experimented with many different styles and genres. Having released three studio albums with The Superjesus, two studio albums as a solo artist and a handful of EDM tracks internationally collaborating with DJ’s Dzeko And Torres, Hook And Sling, Whelan & Di Scala , McLeod has proven herself to be one of Australia’s most diverse artists.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage.

electrified and acoustic music. Combine this with dynamic live performances, brimming with energy and magnetism that leave audiences captivated.

Tanya George

The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

Don’t be mistaken, Dallas Frasca is a band and not just named after the lead singer. Like Blondie and PJ Harvey that came before them, it is clear that namesake front woman Dallas and guitarist Jeff Curran are the driving force of the Melbourne based trio. They fit somewhere in between blues riffed The Black Keys, and the incredible full-throated wail of Janis Joplin. Having no bass, the drums are integral to the sonic massive-ness that fits inbetween the mechanical style riffs, their songs are catchy, huge and you can feel the truth in their tales.

Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Born in St Kilda with a four and half octave voice, Tanya George is either armed solo with looping pedals or surrounded by her talented band. You may have seen this curly haired busker busking on Bourke St, combining elements of soul, indie and pop as she fills the streets with her voice. With her second EP ready to enter listeners ears, she never fails to tell a great story through her song-writing and powerful stage presence.

No time to be smelling the roses during this weekend’s Gravity Enduro. Pic - Jiri Cech.

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

Having blown away crowds at over 150 festivals, Richard Perso is steadily becoming known as one of those 'not to miss' acts. Combining his appreciation for late 60s rock with an old school Blues/roots/folk style guitar approach and infusing it with a bit of didgeridoo as well as a voice likened to that of Eddie Vedder, this one man show delivers a performance that is unique, dynamic, engaging and above all, entertaining.

Pride and Respect

Self-respect and personal pride go together and become the basis for living successfully. That self-respect also manifests itself in the respect we have for others – whether they be black, white, beige or brindle. All people are human – as such all people deserve to be treated with dignity.

And then there is the pride we exhibit as a nation. Many people believe the greatest things we could do to improve National Pride would be a perfectly functioning education system, a health system for all and no homelessness.

Australia has a National Flag and it comes with protocols.

ANZAC Day

T1. Show respect and dignity for all Australian flags. The Australian National flag takes precedence in positioning over all other flags or ensigns. On Australian soil, the Australian National flag takes precedence over other national flags.

2. Fly the flag. The following must be observed when flying the Australian National flag:

• Raise it no earlier than first light.

he years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.

• Lower it no later than dusk.

• If you wish to fly the Australian National flag by night, it must be floodlit.

Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’

3. Raise the flag quickly and lower it ceremoniously. During the raising and lowering of the Australian National flag, everyone present must be silent and face the flag. This also applies to when the flag is carried in a parade. Those in uniform are obliged to salute the flag.

ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different. Falls Creek Service

Another important point is that you should never let the National Flag touch the ground, the water, or the floor.

Join the Falls Creek locals at this unique location, Eagle Rock, for the Dawn Service 2017. Shuttle for ANZAC Dawn Service: 5:15am -6:30am Meet at Slalom Day Car Park.

The Australian National Flag consists of: The Union Jack - this depicts Australia's past links with Great Britain.

The Southern Cross - Five stars that emphasise the importance of navigation to Australia and the southerly location of Australia geographically. The Southern Cross constellation is only viewable from the southern hemisphere.

The Commonwealth Star - also known as the Star of Federation - this shows the unity of the six States and the combined Territories of this country.

There are many varied points of view – but the fact is, it is our flag and comes to us with a history – from a continent where flags were used for many centuries prior. We treat our flag with respect – the same as we treat each other with respect.

AUSTRALIA DAY

THIS LONG WEEKEND

At Falls

With the Australia Day long weekend beginning this Friday 24th, Falls Creek is officially back open for business and bouncing back after a bumpy start to 2020. With visitors tentatively returning to the region and people beginning to look for activities to replace cancelled events, Falls Creek is hoping to attract visitors and locals alike.

The MTB park at Falls Creek has re-opened and been blessed with much needed rain leaving perfect conditions and hero dirt over the coming days. With mountain bikers forming a key component of the resort's visitation FCRM is welcoming them back with open arms. To celebrate the reopening they will be issuing a $25 voucher to the first 150 riders signing up for Blue Dirt’s shuttling service over the weekend. These Vouchers are valid for food, drinks or accommodation at participating

venues in resort. To register head to http:// www.bluedirt.com.au

If you’re feeling lucky Falls Creek are offering a Golden Ticket Weekend for mountain bikers! With a prize valued at over $660, any rider who is shuttling on Saturday in resort has a chance to secure him or herself two weekend shuttle passes and $400 toward accommodation.

Entry is open to all registered riders on shuttles on Saturday. Riders can collect a golden ticket in person from the Blue Dirt Bike Café to be entered in the draw that night. Winners will receive $400 payment direct to the accommodation provider of their choice and two weekend shuttle passes! The big draw will be at 7:30pm on Saturday night in the Frying Pan Inn and ticket holders must be in attendance at the draw to be in it to win it! Full terms and conditions at: www.fallscreek.com.au/ termsconditions.

Falls Creek’s acting CEO Ben Derrick said “We are really looking forward to welcoming riders back into the resort. The recent rain has not only helped the bushfires but also done our trails a world of good. We’re hopeful that with $25 on offer and a golden ticket draw on Saturday we are going to see lots of bikers return to the resort.”

It’s not just mountain bikers being catered for over the Australia day long weekend though. To keep the whole family entertained, a range of water sports and family activities will be taking place on Rocky Valley foreshore. Falls Creek Resort Management has arranged water sports operator Peak Adventure to be setup at the lake with an array of free activities.

FOR SUMMER

Watercraft include kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards. Jarad from Peak Adventure will be on hand to offer tips, tricks and basic training with water sports available from 10am – 4pm both Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th.

If staying high and dry is more your cup of tea why not bring a picnic and let the little ones enjoy free activities on the lake front. Sybrena from the Visitor Information team will be running craft sessions, games and face painting on Saturday and Sunday morning between 10am and 2pm.

Of course all that riding and paddling around is sure to make you peckish so make sure you travel with a #emptyesky and visit some of the fine establishments and eateries on the mountain. From Breakfast at Stingray to lunch at Milch and multiple dinner options including The Frying Pan Inn, Last Hoot, Attunga Lodge and a CFA fundraiser dinner at Karelia Lodge you’re really spoilt for choice this long weekend. For more information on the weekend contact Falls Creek on 03 5758 1200. •

At Falls Creek

The Third round of the Victorian Enduro Tour is scheduled to take place in the stunning Alpine scenery of the Falls Creek MTB Park. With Elite and Senior riders set to tackle a burly course of nearly 30km with 6 stages, this will be a big day out on the bike for many riders. However with Blue Dirt shuttles running on the official practice day on Saturday 1st many riders will be using the opportunity to learn their lines whilst saving their legs for race day.

With this round as an official EWS Qualifier event, many racers are expecting it to be particularly competitive. The additional incentive of chasing prestigious EWS (Enduro World Series) ranking points has led to an influx of racers signing up from further afield. With the world series starting in just a few months we can expect to see some top level riders competing for all important points to secure their entry in the Enduro World Series events.

EWS Points won’t be the only points that riders are chasing though. For most riders the main goal is overall series standings and at the halfway point in the series many riders will be looking to consolidate their leads. In the Elite fields long time French Racer

Lionel Sequera has a convincing lead in the men’s competition surprising many local riders this season. Closer to home Albury Local Julia (Indi) Boer is carrying the flag in the women’s series but all eyes will be on local shredders Ebony Tanzen and Aayla Armitage who are no doubt looking to come back from missing the first round.

Either way the incredible trails of Falls Creek MTB Park is set to be a perfect stage for the upcoming race. Course maps have now been released and the race features a great mix of stages including Big Fella, Wishing Well and of course the iconic Flowtown.

Falls Creek Event Supervisor Nick Buckley said “Falls Creek Resort Management is thrilled to host the third round of the Victorian Enduro Series. We’ve an incredible challenge for riders with a great mix of technical trails and high speed sections. The trail crew have been working flat out getting the course ready and we’re confident the trails are going to be at their best. Given how challenging the recent conditions have been it makes it all the more sweet to see our great trails being raced and people enjoying the resort.”

Entries are still available online and shuttles are running for practice on Saturday 1st of Feb. Racing kicks off Sunday at 9am from

Great Success

Thule Men’s Stage 2

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

Beechworth to Falls Creek – Thursday 6th February. The Thule stage two of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour will be the first big test for the climbers in the peloton. Beginning with a descent out of Beechworth into Stanley, the course then rolls through the North East Victorian countryside, conditions which will suit a breakaway group. However it’s unlikely they will be given too much leeway with the looming climb of Falls Creek to come. Some narrow lumpy roads through Mongans Bridge alongside the Kiewa River may help a break to stay away out of sight of the chasing peloton, hoping to get a head start up the final Falls Creek climb. With 30 kilometres of climbing at 3.9% average gradient and 1160m of elevation, this will show who has got what it takes to win the Tour. The riders leave Beechworth at 10am and should be arriving in Falls Creek from 1pm.

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series. MR: How many national events have you raced?

Thule Women’s Stage 2

Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

A Life to Remember

MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?

Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

MR: How did you get into riding?

Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

Falls Creek to Falls Creek – Thursday 6th February. The second and final stageThule Stage 2 - of the Lexus of Blackburn Women’s Herald Sun Tour will begin with a technical and long 30km descent of Falls Creek before the race turns around and begins to climb back up to the summit of the Victorian ski resort. Despite being on the way down, there are a number of tricky uphill pinches throughout, including the first QOM point of the stage. A flat loop out through Tawonga and along the Kiewa River will give riders the chance to regroup, or let a breakaway group form ahead of the push uphill. The race will be on for overall Tour honours and the 30 kilometre climb at 3.9% average gradient and 1160m of elevation, will show who is the strongest of them all. The riders will leave Falls Creek at 2:30pm and should be sprinting to the finish back in Falls Creek about 4:30pm.

MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

...Needs Your Support

Last week’s article regarding the Pondage – and the potential to impose a speed restriction on water sports that take place on the Pondage has garnered quite a bit of interest. And Facebook has seen lots of comments –ideally sharing the article and encouraging people to make their submissions to AGL by this Saturday the 25th. The Email address to send your well-worded and well-thought-out submission to is: aglcommunity@agl.com.au.

This paper has received some very well thought out comments and copies of submissions that have been forwarded to AGL – but this community should still be taking the matter seriously and preparing as many submissions as possible.

Over the years, ‘our’ Regulating Pondage has provided invaluable enjoyment from a boating and water sporting aspect. Learning to drive a boat – learning all of the safety aspects of operating a boat – learning the healthy sport of water skiing and bare-footing – all in the safety of a secure protected space.

In March 2019 an (updated) report was released commissioned by North East Catchment Management Authority under the authority of The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) titled: North East Region Socio-Economic Value of Recreational

Water: Selected Waterways and Waterbodies. A copy can be sourced from NECMA in Wodonga.

This report sought to “assess the economic and social contribution of selected local waterways and waterbodies to the regional economy and covered data captured during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 period.

Of the 19 waterways and waterbodies studied, the Alpine Shire included:

■ Ovens River at Bright

■ Ovens River at Porepunkah

THE PONDAGE

■ Tronoh Dredgehole at Harrietville

■ Lake Buffalo

■ Pondage & Kiewa River at Mount Beauty

■ Rocky Valley Reservoir.

The Mount Beauty Regulating Pondage forms part of this assessment and as such becomes relevant to the restrictive action proposed by AGL (ie. the plan to seek the effective banning of water skiing and jet skiing on the Mt Beauty Regulating Pondage by reducing the speed limit to 5 knots). A number of details from the report warrant highlighting.

Executive Summary (E3) presents the estimated recreational economic contribution (direct and indirect contribution aggregated to local
