ou like to ride bikes? You like to party? Well this is the biggest and best bike-riding party around! Blue Dirt Mountain Biking presents Ignition, a mountain bike event hinged on the core social elements of the rider lifestyle. Join us this weekend with shuttles beginning at 12noon on Friday 22nd for the Grand Opening of the official Shuttles season of mountain biking at Falls Creek.
A little note of explanation here. While Ignition is promoted as the start of the mountain bike season – it is actually the start of the Blue Dirt Shuttles for mountain biking at Falls. Riders can access the tracks at Falls Creek at almost any time provided you have a driver and can shuttle yourself –or are prepared to ride up-hill as well. Some tracks may be closed for maintenance, but in the main, you can ride almost any time. Since the winter season ended, bike track maintenance has been going full steam to get everything ready for what is sure to be a great weekend - lighting up the mountain bike trails.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

and partying to everything in between, they’ve got it covered. L“This is a brilliant way to officially open the mountain bike season here at Falls. We are super pumped about our fabulous trails and can’t wait for visitors to get amongst it. We’ve got something for every rider, starting and finishing in the resort” says Falls Creek Marketing & Communications Manager, Jo Prothero.
Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Flowtown trail has proved fabulous - 6km of pure flow goodness, links up an epic 10km/525m descent from the summit of Falls Creek to the ticket box at Howman’s Gap – and it’s single track all the way. For the workers, the fabulous Packhorse Trail is a steady climb back to the village via Falls Creek Falls.
ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
The other beginner trails, ‘Induction’linking the Trail Head in Slalom Car Park to the ‘Short Circuit’ area in the Nordic Bowl (also easily accessed from the village via the ‘Aqueduct Trail’), plus the new intermediates ‘Discharge’ which links the top of the Packhorse Trail to the Trail Head, plus ‘Eagle Rock’ and ‘Turbine’ which open up more country around Cloud 9, Eagle Rock and the Pretty Valley Road. This gives us in excess of 40km of some of the best in the area. And the scenery – well when you do stop and have a look around – it is gobsmacking!
MR: Is this your first overseas race?
Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.
MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?
Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.
MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?
Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.
Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

Is Really a Challenge
The Falls Creek Alpine Challenge is Australia’s toughest ultra-trail run set to challenge Aussie and World class athletes.
Last year’s event threw the organisers into chaos when about a foot of snow fell on the high plains in the week leading up to the event – which meant a major re-think and change to the course. This year the weather is looking good and warm. “It’ll probably be too hot” said one of the organisers.
At the time of going to print, a field of around 250 extreme ultra runners are set to descend on the Bogong High Plains this weekend for the running of the Falls Creek Alpine Challenge – and 100 of those runners are taking on the 100 mile.

Mount Beauty Service
This year is the fourth year that Falls Creek has hosted the Alpine Challenge with the event starting and finishing at Slalom Plaza. Interested spectators should be up early on Saturday morning, because the runners in the 100 mile and the 100km will have pre-race check in at 4:15am with the start at 4:30am. Runners in the 60km and 36km get it a little easier with pre-race at 8:15am and race start at 8:30am.
Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.
Race Director Paul Ashton said the response this year has been fantastic with runners coming from every state and territory in Australia as well as several from overseas. At this stage, the field is evenly split across the three distances but it appears the majority of international competitors will join the hard-core Aussies and take on the 100 mile run.
The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.
For spectators and support crews, it is an opportunity to try out the new mountain trail network, with vehicle shuttles operating all day Saturday and Sunday. And please give these athletes as much support and cheering as you can. •
The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion of Loyalty will be offered by Councillor Tony Keeble of the Alpine Shire. TAWONGA WAR MEMORIAL
Our Community Together
Drawing one of the biggest crowds Tawonga has seen in a while, around 150 community members came together last Sunday, 10th November to celebrate the unveiling of the town’s new War Memorial.
After settlement in the late 1860s, Tawonga had become a thriving community by the turn of the century. When war was declared in 1914, a number of Tawonga and district residents enlisted.
Despite this commitment by many Tawonga locals, the town had never had a war memorial of its own - until now. Located in the Tawonga Pioneer Memorial Park, it honours the servicemen and women from Tawonga and district, their connection to the armed services, and their involvement in the various theatres of war and peacekeeping roles.
In saying that Tawonga did not have a war memorial we do however acknowledge the Mount Beauty Cenotaph built by Clarence ‘Snowy’ Miller in 1953.
In January this year, the Tawonga and District Community Association project committee held discussions around a war memorial concept with the local community and engaged specialist trades to construct a memorial whilst allowing an element of creativity within the project brief.
Innovative, unique and a true work of art, the final result is an absolute beauty!
It was a team effort by a number of local trades; the exposed concrete pathway was the work of Brendon Mahoney, the nearby stone reflection seat was constructed by John Walton, and Ben Svarc ran power to the memorial site to enable lighting of the steel memorial ball designed and constructed by Michael Whipps from Whipps Design. Whippsy put considerable thought into the design and consulted with local service personnel, which has resulted in a stunning addition to the park.

Tawonga Mount Beauty Bowls
On Sunday 10th November, the Tawonga Mount Beauty Bowls Club held its annual Muriel Jobling trophy tournament. Muriel Jobling is the late mother of Alan Mull, who together with his wife Margaret, generously sponsor the tournament each year. The tournament was held in much more pleasant conditions than had prevailed in previous days and was competed for by teams from Bright, Tallangatta, Yackandandah and Wodonga, as well as the host club. Three games of nine ends were played and the undefeated winners were a team from the Tallangatta club comprising Marlene Ellis, Sid McCann and led by Dale Mastenbrook and to whom the handsome trophy was presented by Alan and Margaret Mull. •

Band Concert
As the end of another year looms, the Mount Beauty and District Community Band is fine-tuning its repertoire in preparation for an End-of-Year concert to be held on November 23rd in the Mount Beauty Community Centre.
Covering a range of genres from Classical to Dixieland Jazz to lively Soundtracks, and featuring composers from renowned Italian composer Gioachino Rossini born in 1792 to Leonard Bernstein, born more than 100 years later in 1918, the program for the concert seems to have something for everyone.
An unusual inclusion for this year’s performance will be the haunting sound of the Theramin, a new addition to the range of instruments available to the Band. The Theramin is an electronic device, which will be controlled by tuned percussionist, Robyn Wood. The original Theramin was invented in 1920 by a Russian physicist and creates a unique sound that will be easily recognised by the audience.
With a cast of approximately 33 musicians ranging in age from 13 to Timpanist Barb Allen, who turned 90 during the year, the concert promises to be an enjoyable musical evening.
During the concert the winner of the David Vigo Youth Music Scholarship will be announced.
Therefore, another great performance to be enjoyed by our wonderful Mount Beauty & District Community Band at their End of Year Concert. This Saturday, 23rd November from 7:30pm at the Community Centre. Adults $5. Students $2. Under 5’s free. •

Two sponsorships of $500 each will be awarded to youngsters aged 12-17 to help support their participation in their chosen sport or ‘active’ performing art. This is the eighth year that these sponsorships have been offered.

Welcome To This World
There’s no sound quite so sweet as the pitter patter of tiny feet - but it’s become more of a stampede in the Kiewa Valley this year! The region has experienced what some may call a baby boom for our small towns, with around 15 babies joining our community so far in 2019.
Fondly referred to as the ‘Class of 2037’, a number of the bubs have already become firm friends thanks to their parents getting together every week for the new Smalltalk Supported Playgroup at the Lake View Children’s Centre. Held every Wednesday from 1:30pm to 3:30pm, the free facilitated playgroup is for children aged 0-5, and is a chance for parents and carers to learn about strategies to help early childhood learning and development, as well as take some time out to meet new friends.
There’s no doubt about it - they’re all absolutely adorable, and we’d like to extend a big congratulations to all of the proud mums and dads! •

Whilst walking your dog around grassed areas i.e. around the pondage, down to Pebble Beach etc keep your dog on a short lead. This is due to several snake sightings in the past few weeks. I have come across a couple of snakes on the edge of the track round the pondage. Thankfully, the dogs were on short leads and I was able to pull them away from the danger swiftly. Had they been on a longer lead I am sure in at least once instance, one of my dogs would have been bitten. •
