KIEWA VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Power of Water

BRound One - Falls Creek

Tack in 2006 when the announcement was made about the building of the new 140 Megawatt power station at Bogong Village, your Ed saw a letter published in the Border Mail (which I wish I had kept) saying “How dare they build another power station and use all that water when we are in the middle of a drought!” The ideal solution here would be to extend an invitation to that person (and others) to come and visit our fabulous Visitor Information Centre and the Kiewa Valley Historical Society’s wonderful displays – as depicted below. Ed.

Over the years our very active historical society has presented a range of interesting in-depth displays – but this would have to be one of the best.

On Thursday 31st October, the Kiewa Valley Historical Society opened its latest display ‘The Power of Water’ - the history of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.

he National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy. Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

The Historical Society became aware that a large percentage of visitors to the area, as well as newer members of the Mount Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South Community’s, did not really know the history of Mount Beauty and why it exists.

The new display, which is housed in the museum at the Mount Beauty Visitor Information Centre, tells the story of one of Victoria’s major engineering feats, the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, which was built between 1938 and 1961. It also gives an insight into the lives of the workers and their families in the construction town, which became Mount Beauty.

2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday. During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt. com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

The Historical Society was very fortunate to receive a grant of $5000 from AGL, the current owner of Kiewa Hydro, as well as access to their archives to assist with mounting the display. The Society’s grateful thanks go to AGL for the company’s generosity and support. The display is of a very high standard of interpretation and the centrepiece is a magnificent scale model of a Transmission Tower, skilfully produced by retired engineer Mr Ian Howley, to serve as a display unit for information panels.

LOCAL TALENT

Great Success

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

Another pre-existing display actually shows how the power of water does produce electricity.

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

Approximately 60 visitors witnessed the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon by two long-serving Kiewa Hydro employees, Chris Griffiths and David Panozzo, to mark the official opening of the display.

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?

Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

MR: How did you get into riding?

The Mount Beauty VIC is open seven days a week from 10am-4pm on weekdays and 9am-5pm on holidays and weekends. The museum is housed within the VIC and is available to the public during those hours. • Thanks to Helen Howley for this report.

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

The Big Splash!

This weekend saw Round Two of the Victorian Enduro Tour take place at the iconic Big Hill Mountain Bike Park here in Mount Beauty. This year the club had 202 riders on six stages with the tracks ranging from brand spanking new to 25 year old tracks that have been recently resurrected! Team Mount Beauty members have been hard at work over the past few weeks making both the historic and fresh cut tracks ride amazingly well.

Saturday was a shuttle practice day with riders very excited to get to use the busses for their track reconnaissance as Big Hill is notoriously steep and unforgiving, both when climbing and descending! Especially since the first stage took place from all the way up at Bench Five running down the historic Big Hill Downhill Track. However, much of this practice was for naught as the dry and dusty conditions were completely different from what they would face on race day!

Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

MR: How did you get into riding?

A bike wash was set up at the bottom of the hillbut riders quickly realised that this was a futile effort with the amount of mud and dirt being splattered up with each and every pedal stroke and metre descended; and instead spent their time between stages getting warm and having a bite to eat.

In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

Mount Beauty Service

Sunday dawned misty, damp and with the threat of more rain through the day. The first hour of riding was done in the shrouds of cloud with visibility varying as all the riders were starting high up on Big Hill. The tracks were wet and slippery in the rock gardens and roots from the night’s rain; but the dirt sections were tacky and grippy - at the start of the day. About an hour into the race, the rain started to come down again, and any grip still left on the tracks disappeared! At first it was a gentle rain, but this quickly turned to a torrential downpour that made rivers of many sections of the tracks. Some of the riders gave up on the previous day’s lines, and just followed the rivers that were now flowing down the trails - which actually worked out quite well for them!

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

The Commemorative Service will take place at the Cenotaph, beginning at 11am. The Motion of Loyalty will be offered by Councillor Tony Keeble of the Alpine Shire. Prayers will be led by Sister Eileen Reardon of the Catholic Church and the Guest Speaker on the day will be Flight L Richard Cornell ALTC Bandiana..

NEW BUSINESS IN TOWN

With More to Enjoy

If you haven’t met the new owners of the Mount Beauty Post Office – would you mind explaining where have you been?

Pierre and Dani took over the business in May this year after making the decision to move away from the corporate world in Melbourne and spend more time with their family.

Pierre said moving to the Kiewa Valley and taking over the post office has given them not only the opportunity to have the lifestyle they want for their family, but also a chance to utilise the skills they’ve built up throughout their careers so far.

They’ve brought with them both a fresh new direction for the post office, and a new name - Alpine Outfitters.

“The new name reflects the new concept for the business; it’s no longer just a post office or gift shop, but an outfitter for your outdoor passions” said Pierre.

“Mount Beauty, from my point of view, is a playground for almost unlimited outdoor activities, whether it’s mountain biking, road cycling, skiing and snowboarding, bushwalking, fishing or paragliding” he added.

“Our idea is to bring in brands that people who engage in these types of activities will use or appreciate - hence we’ve got Yeti coolers and drinkware, which are designed for serious outdoor enthusiasts, Troy Lee

Designs for mountain biking, and The North Face gear for outdoor explorers.” They’ve expanded their ladies wear to include brands such as Caroline Morgan and Sndys, and now also stock Smartwool, Ugg Australia and Camelbak - just to name a few.

“We’re really excited about bringing even more new brands in the outdoor and fashion space to Mount Beauty in early 2020 - so watch this space,” Pierre said.

The new approach for Alpine Outfitters has made shopping locally even easier this Christmas, with gifts to truly suit every age and interest.

In store, you’ll also find plenty of interesting ideas for gifts, including Tea Tonic teas and tools, kombucha and yoghurt making kits, candles, soaps and bath bombs, toys and games, and more - and if you can’t choose, gift vouchers are always a safe choice.

Of course, business is as usual on the post office side of things, where you’ll find Christmas cards and wrapping paper, and the team ready to help you with gift wrapping, packaging and postage to make sure your presents get to where they’re going on time.

With lay-by available and longer opening hours, there’s no need to leave your Christmas shopping until the last minute; Alpine Outfitters can help you tick off your list with plenty of time to spare.

Do you or someone you know have a print disability?

Alpine Radio presents two one-hour RPH programs per week, reading from selected local and national newspapers – in-depth articles for those with a print disability. Wednesdays at 2pm & Thursdays at 7pm. Serving the local community, 96.5FM in the Kiewa Valley. Streaming on www.alpineradio.com.au

Excited for their first summer behind the counter, Pierre and Dani said the community has already been a fantastic support during their first six months in business, along with the help of their staff. “Sue and Cheree have continued to be the backbone of the post office, and not forgetting the staff you don’t see so oftenPeter, Maree and Codi.”

Crank Handle Brewery Opens

Micro Breweries have become quite popular in recent years. It has also been a dream of Mick Piera’s for the last 10 years or so. About three years ago this dream began to take shape – as the thought of this persistent driving to Albury (for work) was losing its appeal – and Mick fancied spending more time at home with the family. Then the search for suitable premises was on.

Brewing beer was not new to Mick as he had his own little 80 litre brewery at home for years and enjoyed brewing a tasty little drop “just to be social!”

Mick (Michael to mother Jenny) Piera grew up in Mount Beauty as one of Jenny and David’s family – with twin brother Brendan and little sis Simone.

Wife Kellie and Mick have raised three kids, Jake (25), Cade (23) now working locally as a sparky with Ben Svarc at Altitude Electrical. Daughter Stacey (21) is currently working in the restaurant at Peards Nursery in Wodonga.

A couple of years was spent trying to sort premises – until a phone call was received earlier this year – advising that premises were becoming available on the main road in Tawonga South.

Then things started to get really serious – the planning got underway and the necessary equipment had to be sourced and ordered.

Fortunately – like all good families, as work was required, there was always a family member or two, or three, or four, ready to give a hand – all of which is greatly appreciated said Mick.

Now as we move into the Spring Summer period, a fair-dinkum brewery is taking shape – and the last ten years of travelling to Komatsu to train mechanics is becoming a fading memory.

Hard Waste Collection

FThe amount of stainless steel that has been installed is impressive –and one of the features of the new brewery is that these ‘workings’ will all be visible to the patron – only separated by a stainless steel rope barrier. Mick is proud of what he is creating and will be quite happy to explain the operation to visitors (as time permits).

alls Creek Resort Management will be collecting hard waste on Wednesday 26th April - the day after ANZAC Day. Please see our Hard Waste Collection guidelines on the website, or if you require any additional information, please contact the FCRM Office on 03 5758 1200. • Summer Debrief

It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.

From the customers point of view, new tables have been built, a lick of paint around the view and we’re getting close. With the help and support of good mate and very experienced brewer Phil McLean (pronounced McLain) several batches have been brewed – ready for the opening on Saturday 16th November.

Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.

Several styles of beer are planned for the menu: An Alpine Ale, a Porter, an English Special Bitter and an American Pale Ale. These will be complimented with wines by Dal Zotto from Whitfield in the King Valley. Reds and Whites and their fabulous Prosecco. Also on the menu will be ciders from Alpine Cider at Wandiligong.

UKVRA presents…

Initially the food offering will consist of platters, anti-pasto and cheese and bikkies – but this is where daughter Stacey comes in. She will be helping out in the kitchen and planning to offer more of what the customer is requesting.

Overall things are looked pretty good at the new Crank Handle Brewery in Tawonga South. Make an effort to get on down next Saturday 16th and “enjoy a cold one!” •

Remembrance Day Service

Armistice Day is on 11th November and is also known as Remembrance Day. It marks the day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, back in 1918. And this year is the 101st anniversary. A two-minute silence is held at 11am to remember the people who have died in wars.

As in previous years, for this year’s Remembrance Day Service, the Mount Beauty Community Band will be entertaining from about 10:30am prior to the service at the Cenotaph.

Then, from 10:45 am a short service will be held. All are welcome. The band will continue with a few numbers after the ceremony also for your enjoyment.

As an addition to Remembrance Day and all that it respects, the Mount Beauty Art Group folk have presented some absolutely fantastic decorations in and around the front of Seasons Café and the Mount Beauty Hardware and Drapery. It shows some fabulous art and a wonderfully creative display of poppies. Well worth a few minutes of your time to examine, appreciate and reflect. •

Ultrafox

Upper Kiewa Valley Regional Arts is bringing Ultrafox swing band to Mount Beauty on November the 8th. The Mount Beauty Community Centre will start jumping at 8pm to the sounds of this fabulous jazz band.

Inspired by the famous manouche jazz swing of the Hot Club of France which featured Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli, this five piece band features acoustic guitars, violin, accordion and double bass. Hot swinging jazz, tender lyrical ballads, French melodies, gypsy waltzes and original compositions will lift the roof. This Friday, November 8th at 8pm in the Mount Beauty Community Centre.

Tickets available at Mount Beauty Newsagency, on line at Trybooking, or at the door: $25 adult, $20 Members, $10 students.

Our bar will operate from 7:15, at Interval, and post-performance.

For Everyone’s Benefit

As a service to our community, this paper is seeking environmental/ health/safety tips from the community and publishing them for you’re the benefit of our ever decreasing world. Here are some of this week’s offerings.

A Greener Xmas

Brought to you by Lee and Caroline at Gather & Harvest in Hollonds Street.

Here are a few simple ideas to make Christmas a little greener. Less really is more. Instead of giving more stuff, give an experience. Some local ideas could be a coffee voucher at a café, a dinner out at one of our lovely restaurants, a ski pass or lessons, a mountain bike shuttle pass or a high country walk and talk. If giving gifts, what about giving some of our fabulous local food or items made locally. Wrap presents in fabric or reusable bags instead of wrapping in paper. Ditch disposable and use reusable plates, serviettes, cutlery, etc. •

Health and Fitness

Brought to you by Emily and Lee at Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage.

Resistance Training (also known as strength training or weight training), involves moving your body against resistance,

Stress Less

Brought to you by local Personal Trainer Heather Mull.

Feeling stressed? Find a quiet moment and list the thing/s which are making you stressed. Are you worrying about a future scenario that may never happen? Be mindful of ‘Now.’ Consider simple steps you can take to move forward, including considering talking to a friend or specialist. STOP, breathe slowly and deeply, and walk or sit near a river, lake or in another natural setting as often as you can to simply listen to nature’s music. You may find using lavender essential oil and/or drinking an herbal tea like chamomile soothing. •

Dog Safety

Brought to you by Lisa and David at LD’s Pet Care

Whilst walking your dog around grassed areas i.e. around the pondage, down to Pebble Beach etc keep your dog on a short lead. This is due to several snake sightings in the past few weeks. I have come across a couple of snakes on the edge of the track round the pondage. Thankfully, the dogs were on short leads and I was able to pull them away from the danger swiftly. Had they been on a longer lead, one of my dogs would have been bitten. •

MISSING BOOK

A copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Environment, Land Use and Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was left for this community in the care of Mr Bill Sutton. Bill was happy to lend the book and until now it was always returned – until this last 18 months. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt someone’s memory. Please contact your Ed on 0400 350 488.
