And… Just in Time
I’m not referring to modern inventory management theory developed by Toyota in the 60’s and 70’s, but rather the storm cycles that are hitting the Alps pretty much as you are reading this. Regular readers of ‘This Week’ are used to historical comparisons and stats relating to snowfall and predictions. So not wanting to let you down, a comparison to more recent history, in particular 2017, is warranted.
The now infamous Blizzards of Oz 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 transformed the resort in 2017 from a base of 70cms (by coincidence… just what we have now) to over 2 metres on closing weekend and a cumulative 4m plus season. It was ‘snorkel season,’ with the three storms delivering some of the best skiing since 2003 and 2004.
We are presently (6/8/19) 31cms below average in terms of natural snow depth, but a very respectful 113cm in snow making areas (great work Lift Co). The trade off, you’ve had plenty of time to work on your goggle tan with so many sunny days. With predictions coming through of up to 1m from the first front and supplementary
falls through August, the resort looks set for a ripper September nonetheless and getting back to a better than average season.
Just spare a though for the Australian Secondary Schools Snowsports Team Championships (ASSSTCs) who competed this week at Falls Creek in some pretty trying conditions and finished off the last day of competition (the XC events) up against some bone chilling wind gusts. The last three years have seen these teams compete in challenging conditions (some might say character building!), so fingers crossed you’ll have blue skies next year.
With the forecast conditions for the weekend, it sets a great scene for some Avalanche Training workshops that are being held by Avalanche Training Australia.

This week’s event schedule continues to have something for everyone. If you like heights, there’s the ‘Rails Under Lights’ on Friday night, or the Big Air competition on Saturday (the 40 footer is a monster!). Expect to see some talent at these events with the Nitro Boarding team resident this weekend too.
It’s ladies’ weekend at Falls Creek, with two great events, the Ski De Femme, an XC event hosted by the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, offering free instruction to novice and intermediate skiers in both classic and skating techniques. Head to Windy Corner to get involved.
Then on Sunday morning, Nitro Good Times, She Shreds and QT are hosting a “Ladies Brunch” …which you can follow up by attending the She Shreds x Nitro INSTA Famous Workshop with Christy Prior and Zoi Sadowski-Synnott. Up your INSTA profile by learning from the pros.

Resort Entry is located at Howman’s Gap, approx. 4km before reaching Falls Creek. Day and Night passes are $56.50 on arrival per day, (or $51.50 on line). If arriving after 5pm and departing prior to midnight on the same day, entry is free. Visitors over 65 years of age receive a discount.
Season Passes are available at $555 (or $475 on line).

Foodie Tip of The Week: Feathertop – a menu so good, I even took pictures of it (not the food… go to their Facebook for those), so I know what I’ll have when I go back! Do yourself a favour, head up to this cosy lodge, with its roaring open fire and great atmosphere. Starters - Deep Fried Brie, grape and house salad… indulgent and delicious, teamed with the Duck Confit Spring rolls, truffle and mustard mayo… anything with truffles gets me (so we added the Chips – with truffle and parmesan and Seasonal Greens for ‘balance’). Mains - the Duck – pan fried breast, grilled baby carrot, poached pear, caramel onion puree… crisp, sweet and stunningly delicious. My dining partners (Mrs S) had the risotto of the day – mushroom, soft boiled egg (and more truffles!). I’d usually wash this down with a pinot noir, but the outstanding selection of regional wines drew my attention to the Golden Ball ‘la bas’ Chardonnay… smashingly old school, big and buttery. Great Fun and Results
Two weekends ago was a busy one with multiple races on for young and old. The Wombat’s Rambler was held on the night of Friday 26th July and is a great fun intergenerational and multi-discipline race for those whose intentions are both serious and fun. Race Club was incredibly proud of all the race club kids (young and old, past and present) who took part as well as the parents who helped to round out the teams for some of the younger kids.
Well done to the Olympic Rejects: Robbie Morrison, Alfie Wenk, Finn Bowes and Phoebe Howlett for taking out top honours and the $1000 prize. Current and past race club kids taking the challenge to the Austrian Coaches and winning!
Saturday 27th July provided an opportunity for another multi-discipline race with the Rider X race. The low visibility conditions created quite a challenge, but our competitors were up for it! Race Club was once again incredibly proud of all the young and old, past and present race club kids who took part as well as those who made it up to the podium.
Saturday 27th was also the Race Club Trivia Night. And it was a blast. President Lachy Bowes took the mic and was Trivia Master for the evening. Never shy when speaking in front of a crowd of Race Clubbers, Lachy kept us in stiches with laughter in between trivia questions and gallantly escorted Noelene Lee to her transport home when Noels called it a night, running back to find Noelene’s forgotten hand bag when she left it behind. Lachy even managed to pronounce the name of the runner up team ‘Les Quizerables’ (proposed by wife Karen specifically to see if he could say it!) by the end of the night.

And finally on Sunday 28th July we had the Australian Masters Alpine Championship GS race on Father Fosters, which confusingly was also open to those who I wouldn’t consider old enough to be classified as of Masters age! Unfortunately yours truly had to withdraw from the race with a suspected concussion. However Race Clubbers young and old represented, many of whom winning in their age divisions.
Last week a squad of Race Club Kids travelled to Mt Buller for the jNat’s mogul competition on Sat 3rd August. Victoria’s best young mogul skiers put on an impressive show at the 2019 Junior National Mogul Championships ‘jNats.’ In a first for mogul skiing at Mt Buller, the finals were held under new stadium lights, following a major investment as part of the Mt Buller Olympic Training Centre initiatives on the mountain.
In total, 87 athletes from Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham competed in the event across two age categories, with $1,600 in prize money, coveted medals and Bollé goggles. The following athletes did the club proud: Issy Bond and Grace Breen qualifying 12th and 14th in the first round Ladies Youth Division, and
Jasper Wong and Thomas Breen qualifying 16th and 19th in the first round Men’s Youth Division. Unfortunately they didn’t progress through to the finals, but that’s how it goes sometimes and there can be only one winner in every event. As every successful athlete will tell you, the path to the podium is littered with events that they didn’t progress through to finals in.
We also had Race Club kids travel to Buller in the Falls Creek Primary School team for the Cross Country Interschools competition on Sunday 4th August. The Primary School took out the overall trophy for a Co-ed Primary division, thanks to excellent overall results of all the kids who represented Falls Creek Primary School.

Snowboarder Camp Last Weekend
DWA Snowboarder Camp for 2019 delivered a focused group of Snowboarders and, to keep Alpine downhill alive, one skier with on and off snow support from DWA Guide Julia Manton. What was the weekend really like? Only one word could describe the weekend ‘Beautiful!’ Saturday was a perfect blue bird day followed by another sunny Sunday at Falls.
As usual on the weekend, the DWA Guides were out in force assisting Ethan, Nick and Edward. Ethan again showed that with a prosthetic it was still possible to carve from heel to toe down Highway 83 early in the morning while most people were just getting out of bed. DWA guide Chris then decided that with the sky a perfect blue it was time

for a scenic tour of the Summit, Skyline and Village. Eddie, the only skier in the group, was in his element with Sacha and Samantha who were making perfect parallel tracks around Highway 83 and Drovers for Edward to follow. The DWA Team then decided to take on a few well-defined rollers that tested Eddie who could be seen with a huge grin as he went down each one.
Nick also was a star attraction with his balance and control of a snowboard for the very first time, taking all the information in from The Falls Creek Ski School and his two guides Georgia and Sinead. Nick was determined to master turning and linking turns and the DWA Guides assisted on Sunday to enable Nick to achieve that goal.
As with all skiing and snowboarding, stance is critical to a skier or snowboarder with a prosthetic. The choice of a stance should relate to the participant’s balance, or how far the body can move without losing stability. Retaining balance is accomplished by adjustments to the ankles or ankle, knees or knee and hips, with consideration given as to whether the student uses the ankle or knee as the primary flexing joint.

When to Retire Your Boots
Unlike Penfold’s Grange, plastics don’t age well. Ski boots are made from plastic and they don’t mature into a fine specimen worth more than the day they were bought. Instead, they have a limited lifetime in which they’re required to attach you to your skis and do their job, hopefully in comfort. Then it’s time to retire them as flowerpots in the garden.

After their expected life span, the plastics start to perish – both within the liner and the shell. Unfortunately, ski boots start to die over time, even if you haven’t skied in them that much. Retail shells and liners last 200 ski days or 5 years – but you feel them start dying at around 150 days – sooner if you’re a pro (instructor, ski patroller, racer, or expert ski bum).
How do you know they’re dying?
The liner: new issues start popping up that haven’t been there previously. When this happens it’s just a matter of time until the liner needs replacing, and any fixes tend to be short term. You might notice you get rubbing on the bony parts of your feet when you didn’t used to, heel lift increases, or cramps and aches that didn’t used to be there.
The shell: the shell starts out with a smooth movement from beginning to the end range of forward motion (the forward flex). As the plastic gets older and brittle, it loses its bounce and the flex pattern changes. It now starts to feel ‘empty’ until the end of travel and then it stops, like a bad clutch – it’s on/off.
COMFORTABLE SKIING
A few things will impact how long your boots last. How hard you ski, how much you weigh, how well you look after your boots and whether you dry them out properly. The extra movement allowed by a boot that’s too big or by not having ski orthotics will also reduce how long your boots will last, as it puts excessive wear and tear on the liner.
You might wonder what’s wrong with skiing in an old boot? And to a degree, it’s not a major issue. You need to be aware that the niggles won’t be able to be fully resolved and will reoccur. The real problem comes when the plastics are at the point of exploding under force. Just like last year when a guy was skiing in a 20-year-old boot, the sole of the shell fell off midmogul and the ski kept going down the hill without him. He limped back into the shop with a very wet sock, lucky to not have skewered anyone with his runaway ski. So how well do you know your boots? Do you know your ski day count? Do you
scratch a mark in them for every day? Or do you note the subtle differences in flex as you drive the boot into another perfect turn?
Either way, a new boot should be a new beginning – a great chance to reassess your skiing, get a lesson and push things to the next level. •

Start Meeting Our Hoppet Contingent
This week I thought it was time to start thinking about the Hoppet, the big dance. It’s only two weeks out after all. I plan to do a Hoppet special the week before the Hoppet where I try to meet some of the real ‘Unsung Heroes’ of the Hoppet, those people who might be competing in their 15th Hoppet, those who have come back from all sorts of injuries, those who are helping their five year old kids around the course, so look forward to that. But this week, I caught up with a Swiss boy who is alright at skiing. The modern-day Romeo, a Swiss bull, a double poling extraordinaire, let’s meet this person.
TWIFC: “Who are you? Where are you from?”
LAURO: “I‘m Lauro Brändli, 22 years old, from Davos, Switzerland. I’m a long distance cross country skier living the Australian life for the season.”
TWIFC: “Why have you come to Australia?”
LAURO: “To visit my girlfriend in the first place, and to have good actual ski training during the European winter. It’s a really nice change to the summer training I’ve done in the other years and it’s nice to be a proper skier for the whole year.”
TWIFC: “What do you think of the Australian Alps?”
LAURO: “I really like them! I was surprised when I first arrived because I’ve expected something completely different. I’m a fan of the landscape although the mountains are missing. And it’s really strange to me to see trees with leaves on them in the snow. It’s a really nice change to the vegetation we have in Switzerland.”
TWIFC: “How does the snow here compare with Davos, Switzerland?”
LAURO: “I‘d say the biggest difference is the temperature of the snow. The Davos snow is mostly about -10°C whereas the snow here is pretty ‘warm’ and wet - which means that we can barely ski on stick wax.”
TWIFC: “How do the mountains here compare with Davos?”
LAURO: “I haven‘t seen a mountain in Australia so far but if you mean those hills

TWIFC: “How was it competing at Australian Nationals a couple weeks ago at Falls Creek?”
LAURO: “It was fun! The races were pretty hard and the conditions were very slow. The competitors were strong and they did a good job in making use of their home advantage. Congrats again to everyone who took part!”
TWIFC: “What are your goals for the Kangaroo Hoppet?”
LAURO: “The main goal is of course to win the race! But it’s gonna be a hard competition and many things can happen so a podium would also be nice to achieve.”

Goebel. This is a women’s event, a ‘Fun Race’ for women of all ages to get out on the race skis and have a go. Distances are 1km, 2.5km and 5km in Freestyle technique. Find the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club Website to register. You can also register for the Rocky Valley Rush 10/15km Freestyle event on Sunday via the Birkebeiner website. This one is a longer race but has great participation each year and is always a fun course out Sun Valley and back. Good luck to all competing.
Snow Report
Snow conditions have been sunny but thinning lately and with a bucket of snow just fallen our trails look to have to perfect top up. The groomer has been doing a great job heading out to Heathy’s, Sun Valley and Roper’s to name a few. Trails are great, so be sure to check them out with Hoppet preparation beginning soon.
Mini Series Three
TNSC’s Snow Trek & Travel Mini Series #3 was held Sunday August 4th at Falls Creek’s Nordic Bowl. The weather was perfect for the 24 junior and adult skiers and for all the officials. At the conclusion of the kids’ events, TNSC recruited the enthusiastic junior participants to assist with the official duties of marshalling skiers at the start, commentating during the race, time and finish recording and handing out of drinks, which allows the parents and race officials to also have a race. Nitro Snowboards are bringing their best international female riders to Falls Creek this weekend and it’s something you don’t want to miss out on. Not only are they here, but you get to meet them, ride with them, have brunch with them, do yoga with them and even take part in a photo shoot with them!

Crowned the ‘Queen of Style,’ Christy Prior took up snowboarding in her teens and after many hours at the indoor snow park in Auckland, and numerous video edits, she quickly headed to the top in slopestyle and big air.
She is a 2014 Olympian, an X games, Dew tour and Burton Open medallist, as well as being named NZ snowboarder of the year since 2013. If that’s not enough, she is also a surfer and 500 hour yoga instructor.
Christy will be running a yoga session at 5pm on Saturday after riding and before the Good Times party at Stingray. Come along and get to know Christy and see how she maintains balance as a professional snowboarder with 60 minutes of flow at QT ($20 online. $25 on the day (cash only).

Zoi is currently the best in the world after just taking out the Women’s Snowboarding Triple Crown (X Games Gold – Slopestyle.
X Games Silver – Big Air. FIS World Champs Gold – Slopestyle. US Open Gold –Slopestyle) and taking bronze in the Big Air at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018. At just 18 years of age Sydney born Zoi, now resides and trains in Wanaka and is part of the NZ team.

Sarah McLeod is the creative force behind ARIA Award winning, platinum selling rockers The Superjesus. With over 20 years in the industry she has experimented with many different styles and genres.
Having released three studio albums with The Superjesus (Sumo, Jet Age and Rock Music) and two studio albums as a solo artist (Beauty Was A Tiger and Rocky’s Diner) and a handful of EDM tracks internationally collaborating with DJ’s Dzeko And Torres, Hook And Sling , Whelan & Di Scala , McLeod has proven herself to be one of Australia’s most diverse artists.

McLeod is currently composing music for a stage performance created by the producers of American Idiot. A modern adaptation of Jane Eyre in which she also play two characters. The show will run for six weeks at the Q Pac theatre in Brisbane in October/ November this year.

New SES Gear
The Falls Creek SES Unit have been busy behind the scenes working towards improving their resources. This in turn improves their capabilities to better serve the community from a search and rescue point of view. Last season our unit was successful in our grant application for a new snowmobile to replace one of our ageing fleet.
Then again this year we have obtained two new snowmobiles – both provided by a VESEP Grant (Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program). VESEP is an annual grants program funded by the Victorian Government, which provides funding to Victorian emergency services volunteer groups to purchase essential operational equipment, vehicles and appliances. These snowmobiles, once kitted out with emergency response gear, are valued at over $26000 per unit and due to new design and features provide us with the most effective on snow search and rescue vehicles to date. This year our ageing Nissan Patrol has been replaced with a fully equipped new Ford Ranger - also a very capable search and rescue vehicle and a huge asset to our summer operations. The VESEP program also provides for minor facility improvements. The Unit is also in negotiations with the Victorian SES and Resort Management to replace our ageing headquarters at Windy Corner. The current LHQ has served us well considering it was the old ‘Dawn Lodge.’ which was donated by Roy Morris prior to the building of Astra Lodge. ‘Dawn was then transported from Sitzmark Street, through the village and up to Windy Corner where it now resides.

Our Falls Creek SES members will be tin rattling and collecting this Friday afternoon down at the Howman’s Gap ticket box –to simply raise a few bob to support the operational costs of running an SES unit.

BSAR – a prominent Victorian volunteer group established as a section of The Federation of Victorian Walking Clubs (VicWalk) Inc. Since 1949 and pre-dating the Victorian Police Search and Rescue squad, the Federation has maintained this specialised section.

They are content with spending anywhere from a day to multiple days searching in often hard and difficult terrain. They are equipped with specialised equipment and for most; it brings great satisfaction to find a lost or injured person.

Their squad simply cannot keep up with the demand and therefore they are happy to partner with this specialist group. Through careful structured communication BSAR volunteers are deployed by the Victorian Police.

An early start for the Melbourne crew meant that the police bus rolled in to the Mountain Creek carpark at 8:30am. SSI equipment was distributed to all participants. This included avalanche transceivers, snow probes, radios, ice axes and rescue equipment. A busy schedule lay ahead!

Locally – Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club is a part of VicWalk and maintains a strong presence within BSAR. The North East BSAR group is unique in that it is the only district which can be deployed alone, without the assistance of Victorian Police Search and Rescue. Local members have extensive knowledge of the Alpine National Park/ Bogong High Plains and the harsh weather conditions people tend to go missing in. Birkie Search and Rescue members have been instrumental in saving lives on both Bogong and Feathertop, as well as assisting in dozens of other searches over the years.

Saturday’s weather continued to simulate common searching conditions of high wind chill, fog and cold. The afternoon session was spent placing snow anchors, rope setups and digging snow pits to check avalanche probability around the Hells Gap area.
And the wattle was their talisman, to get back home again.

Moving a patient with a fracture or any serious injury/illness takes careful planning, especially in the winter alpine environment. Just before nightfall our patient was placed in the warmth of Michell Hut, closely being monitored by the medical team. Plans can change quickly during a search or rescue and we were notified into the evening that a medical helicopter would give winching a try, if weather permitted. After four brightly coloured flares were sent skyward through thick fog, it was determined they would try again in the morning.
I slept solidly. Up at 6am, pack down and eat and ready for a 7am departure.
Hoping for clear skies and a straightforward winch operation, the conditions couldn’t have been worst. Strong winds and limited visibility meant numerous attempts by the helicopter were abandoned.
Intel from further afield was that the cloud was lifting and it was a case of ‘hurry up and wait’.
Our back-up plan to move the patient lower down the mountain was enacted late morning. Bright SES had been contacted to assist with walking up a ‘wheel’ that attaches onto the bottom of the patient’s sled to manoeuvre over dry terrain (no snow). Our patient was calm and collected (or drugged up) and in pretty good spirits for the trip down. Sliding down a mountain with a team of six rescuers by

the side, controlling speed and direction is a challenging task. After a kilometre of snow travel and several hundred metres of lifting and carrying the sled over rocky terrain, once again the helicopter returned. This time the chopper was able to hover 60 feet above the tree canopy to perform a confined area winch to the satisfaction of all members involved. There is no better training than the real thing.
On return to the carpark having retrieved our own packs, praise was given to the four agencies involved and the collaboration it takes to carry out a rescue with utmost professionalism.

Bill Walsh - 1966-2019
Bill came to live in the Valley in the middle of 2014, after spending several Summers basking in the cool quiet of Mountain Creek campground, away from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne. He needed a change of pace, after a busy few years teaching yoga across the city. He revelled in the opportunity to re-set, and took on roles such as cleaning and personal care, while maintaining his yoga practice with a couple of small classes per week. He quickly wormed his way into many people’s hearts with his unique character, his rare sense of humour and unswerving ability to stay true to himself.
Born and raised in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, he made a decision as a teenager to never subscribe to the ‘white picket fence’ image of wife, children and mortgage, and so spent his life travelling and exploring his own frontiers of spirituality and knowledge. This commitment took him to Canada and Europe, and Central and Northern Australia. He got into trouble a few times, but his charm seemed to always get him through! Family featured heavily in his life, coming from Irish Catholic stock, and they were a tremendous source of support and love during the harder times in his life. His immediate and extended family were never too far from his thoughts and interactions, and he cherished his relationships with nieces and nephews. He spoke particularly fondly of his parents who had both died and a sister who succumbed to cancer in her early 50’s. Bill developed a passion for music in his teenage years, and spent the rest of his life honing his skills on guitar and song-writing, jamming with his mates and performing in Melbourne and the East coast of Australia during his 30’s. Once he moved to the Kiewa Valley, he began to once again perform in the area, but felt that there was something missing. Enter Rose (me)! We met in October 2015, and immediately we knew that we would be friends. Both looking for a musical partner, it was the perfect match of talent. We put together some songs and
took off from there, developing our act (Smoke and Mirrors) and picking up regular appearances at the Sweet Water Brewery, as well as gigs further afield. Our on-stage chemistry was undeniable, and Bill totally loved us playing together as it opened him up to a new way of playing and exploring his craft. I’d like to say I made him a better singer, but maybe not! We enjoyed a bit of a local following and totally appreciated all the love we received during our shows and beyond.
In January 2017, Bill was diagnosed with secondary Melanoma, having previously encountered it in 2009. Over the next two and half years, he received treatment with varying success, and did his best to continue living life to the full while coping with sideeffects of treatment and the condition. He did this with amazing grace and forbearance, as it was a hard road at times. On many occasions I stood in awe of his acceptance and endurance as the disease took its toll on him and his independence. In July 2018, the melanoma made it to his brain, which naturally had a huge impact on him. However, at this point he experienced an epiphany of sorts; faced with the very real prospect of death came the realisation that he was not afraid. This helped him through what turned out to be the final year of his life, and he continued to accept treatment as long as quality of life remained. Bill’s final months were marred by regular seizures and progressive loss of function down his right side. He needed full time care which I was honoured to provide. Throughout this
whole time, he accepted his lot with such calm and peace. Anyone who has spent time in Bill’s company may be surprised by this, as he never held back on his opinion about things he didn’t like! But his years of mind training at the feet of traditional yoga stood him in good stead for this final journey. Once treatment was no longer an option, he turned towards his death with courage and allowance.
Billy and I married just 10 days prior to his death on June 17th, as a recognition and celebration of the deep and abiding love we had for each other. He died at home on his own terms. After a lifetime of travelling, he found himself a home here in the valley, and by all reports of those who knew him a long time, he was the happiest here.
I wish to thank the Mount Beauty Medical Centre and Alpine Health, NE Palliative Care, the local ambulance officers - they were just magnificent - and all the people who rallied around us both, for all their support in enabling me to care for Bill at home. It was a truly humbling experience and I remain deeply grateful. • Rose
