FROM THE CEO Unsung Heroes

T

here is absolutely nothing better than waking to a crisp morning, blue skies and the promise of knowing the mountain is going to be in pristine condition to rip some tram tracks down your favourite run. Well, there is, it’s waking to 20cm plus of fresh pow and getting the full ‘white room’ experience before you’ve had your first coffee! Of course, you won’t need that caffeine because the thrill of a powder morning will give you a rush like little else. You’ll need that coffee a little later when the impact of that early morning wake up, that ensured you grabbed first lifts, or first turns after the ‘pow hike’ begins to take its toll! Now, a mountain resort is a tremendously interesting place to work (for a whole lot of reasons). Also, because it is basically 24/7 nonstop ‘everything’, there’s always something going on. Days are full of awesomeness and night times are either spent recounting the day’s great moments, catching up with mates, or wishing you’d got a massage because your legs are burning, or for some going straight from après to dinner (…just ‘cause).

But there’s a whole bunch of people for whom the nights are their busiest and it’s worth a thought for all those who are just starting their shifts as you switch to ‘chill’... The list is long and varied and not just relevant to ‘on mountain’ crews. Let’s start with the ‘boys in blue’, who’s busiest shift starts just as you’re heading off the hill. The local crew, staffed by a terrific bunch from across the region and supplemented by the Operational Response Crew (ORU), are specially trained for the alpine environment and often in conditions that few would consider going out in, can be found actively on duty across the village, with safety, community engagement, plus law and order, their top priorities. Then, the restaurant crews, the managers, the chefs, the kitchen hands, the ‘dish pigs’ (term of endearment), the wait and bar staff similarly begin to ramp up to make sure your evening experience is just as memorable as your day on the slopes. The snow clearing teams, they don’t just come out to move tonnes of snow from car parks and the roads when it’s snowing, but they manage and monitor the roads to ensure your safety when you’re likely to

arrive a little late or need to leave early. If you’re staying on the hill and need transport, then the 4pm shift at the ATS often works well into the morning hours (3am is typical on big nights) to make sure the arrival experience gets your stay off to a great start. Then of course, the groomers and snowmaking teams. They’re the real unsung legends, because without them, the product we all come here for wouldn’t be the same. Plus, when Mother Nature doesn’t play nice, their ability to manage the terrain, make snow out of thin air (literally) and ensure the snowpack is ready for first lifts is absolutely paramount. So, whilst you start getting ready to head out at 8am for first lifts, they’re pretty much all just finishing their shifts… or grabbing dinner (what you’d call breakfast), before a well-earned sleep. Speaking of food… Foodie Tip of the Week: “Fast Food”… Munchski’s – try their pretzels (they’re not what you think), and get the loaded fries, with a huge range of toppings. Need a sugar hit – Snonuts – better than the Colonel, everything is finger licking sensational. Easy Eats in the Village Bowl - the brekkie panini is a great start to the early morning first lifts. Fancy something a little more European, hit Jerry’s Stall on Parallel Street – gourmet goulash soup, goulash pies, Czech pastries and piping hot gluhwein (proclaimed to be the best on the hill). Enjoy…now get out there and carve some corduroy. • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

FROM THE GM Using Your Head

I

f like me, you grew up in the 70’s and 80’s you’ll remember carefree days whizzing around local neighbourhood streets on your bike (mine was a blue Malvern Star with a very glittery seat and a particularly flowery basket). In those days, nobody wore a helmet and we so loved that sense of freedom of just having the wind in your hair. Skiing was very much the same, however whilst Australia’s cycling industry became regulated in 1990’s and helmets became mandatory, the skiing industry has never been regulated and the right to choose to wear a helmet (or not) is still very much yours today as it was yesteryear. Recently there has been a move to deregulate bicycle helmet laws in Australia, advocating to allow those over the age of 17 the right to choose whether or not to protect their heads when riding. Seems crazy given the statistics showing the impact of helmets in saving lives! In stark contrast however, the Australian ski industry is seeing continued growth and voluntary take-up of helmet wearing. Each year, Australian ski resorts participate in a helmet survey and this year’s recent survey showed helmet use continues to trend upwards – achieving 84.2% compared to 80.8% in 2018. Skiers vs snowboarders continues to trend towards more skiers at 74.5% vs 24.5%. At Falls Creek, this trend is even more pronounced with 90% of all Snowsports participants choosing to protect their heads; placing this resort at #1 for self-regulated noggin protection! This is up from 77.4%

last year, with the split between alpine skiers and snow-boarders being 70.8% vs 29.2% respectively. Now I’m not about to cast any dispersions about this split (I’ll leave that to you to debate over the dinner table) but what I will say is that overall, I reckon that makes our Falls Creek’s skiing and boarding community pretty smart! Helmets save lives, no question, but here are a few added bonuses the remaining 10% of our mountain population may like to consider: •

Helmets are warm.

Helmets are convenient - with goggles attached, the whole lot comes off and on in one go.

Helmets make great mobile phone holders… hands free even.

Helmets come in many shapes, sizes and colours to mix and match with your favourite outfit.

As it says in the Medical Centre advert on page thirteen: “You’ve only got one head – put a lid on it!” Pic – Tim @Top Shots

Helmets help grow your on-snow confidence.

To be honest, I was a late adopter of the helmet. I felt self-conscious and unfashionable. I have my skiing ‘wing-man’ and ‘snow-sister’ to thank for encouraging me (read into that… knock some sense into me) to buy one on a trip we took to Japan in 2015. I haven’t looked back. To all those helmet wearers, thank you for helping to raise personal on-snow safety standards at Falls Creek and in doing so, helping us stay at the forefront of this positive industry trend. If you’re a nonwearer, don’t feel pressured, but we’d really love you to give it a go. Stay safe and enjoy the mountain! Sharon Raguse, General Manager Falls Creek Ski Lifts

LOCAL HISTORY Racing - Stimulates!

S

uch was the title of an article in the May 1950 edition of SKI-HORIZON magazine, the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs (F.O.V.S.C) which was formed in 1947. The journal included a regular item by members “Why I Ski” and Skippy St Elmo, pioneering skier at Falls Creek wrote about her passion for racing. Then 33 years old, Skippy had first skied only five years earlier when, newly married, she and her husband Toni spent the winter living in Wallace’s

Hut. After the winter working as an assistant to the S.E.C hydrological surveyor Toni was offered a new post doing similar work measuring snow depths and water flows for the S.E.C’s Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. In 1946 the couple became the first full time residents of Falls Creek. Skippy’s introduction to racing came that year when Toni entered her in the first club championships held by the Bogong Ski Club at Rocky Valley. “Up to that stage,” Skippy wrote, “my skiing was confined to the practice slopes and it seemed like I had joined the ranks of ‘no hopers’ - getting nowhere fast.” With five minutes’ notice that she was competing in the open slalom Skippy’s ‘legs went to jelly.’ “I do not even remember going through the flags - perhaps I didn’t - still at the end of the nightmare run I was happy to learn that the third fastest time was mine. I knew from then on my goal was to be a racing skier but did not realise how hard and long the road was to be and still is.”

Skippy trained with the men from Bogong Ski Club and in 1949 won both the Downhill and Combined State Championship held at Mt Buller. In her memoirs she recalls that “I could now understand why Toni had insisted I train hard. Racing had been fun, as well as an unforgettable experience. I had felt strong and managing the rough and ice patches in the downhill was no trouble to me. After my second run in the slalom I felt so fresh and fit I was ready to do it all again.” The following year she was selected in the Victorian team to compete in New Zealand. Summer training involved long hikes on the Bogong High Plains accompanying Toni on his rounds of the water races; at weekends training with the team from Bogong Ski Club “…jogging over the plains and climbing steep slopes and river hopping along the upper Kiewa. If the weather was bad we would practice the art of tying our feet into skis with the ‘Long Thong.” Back in those early days safety bindings were unheard of. The binding of the day, as far as Toni was concerned, was unsuitable for his technique of skiing. The use of the ‘Long thong’ (a 7 foot 2.13m length of leather) securely held the boot to the ski, with absolutely no movement. I remember when I raced at Hotham and Buller I was conscious of the whispered jokes about my crazy leather bindings.” In 1951 the first rope tow was established in the Falls Creek bowl, but now coached by Hungarian born Milan Kovacic, Skippy was training further afield on the slopes of Mt McKay and Ruined Castle. With the long climb up, two runs was usually the maximum they achieved. The ski run down

LOCAL HISTORY from the Roper’s Lookout was also a regular training slope. A highlight in Skippy’s racing career came in 1953 when Albury Ski Club held an Open Championship. Competing against the men in giant slalom and downhill Skippy won the event. She wrote “It had never for a moment occurred to me it was any big deal racing against the men. Both Toni and Milan had always insisted I ski with the men whenever it was possible.

“It had never for a moment occurred to me it was any big deal racing against the men. Both Toni and Milan had always insisted I ski with the men whenever it was possible.” John Wagner and Frank Prihoda, both Czech Olympic skiers, were very friendly and helpful. John Wagner offered me advice which I gladly accepted ....and I did manage to win. Later, John told me, in his experience skiing, even in Europe, he had never known a woman to win an Open Ski Championship.” Skippy was then 36 years old. •

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Women’s DWA Camp

T

he two-day DWA camp at Falls Creek last weekend was all about giving women the time and space to learn and shine. Having a dedicated weekend for all the women to come together was very important (and fun), both for the participants on the camp, as well as the women DWA guides and trainers who had the opportunity to further develop and hone their skills. People came on the Women’s DWA camp for a variety of reasons. Some were revisiting skiing or learning to ski with a vision impairment, while others were learning to snowboard after a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Some experimented with switching up snow disciplines from snowboarding on the Saturday to sit skiing on the Sunday, in order to broaden their options for keeping up with their children. The dampness of the air certainly did not dampen the spirits on this weekend. We all know women are excellent at

collaboration, so in this article we turn our attention to all the advice and comments from each of the women on the camp, in no particular order: 1. Don’t forget your lip balm. 2. Go to bed earlier on the Saturday night and STOP talking so late. 3. Don’t flip your guide off the side of the chairlift on dismount (vision impaired athlete’s advice). 4. Building a snow guide dog is much better than making a snowman, especially if you put a carrot in the snow dog’s mouth. 5. Finding the difference between a family size pizza slice and a single size pizza slice is great for learning snow plough shape, but makes you very hungry by the end of a ski lesson. 6. Wear all of your layers when being a DWA ski guide observing a snowboard lesson, or alternatively borrow your extra warm participant’s clothes when she sheds them as she gets too hot. 7. Don’t fall asleep in the shower. 8. Boa’s make good emergency exit snowboard boots when your feet spasm.

The very happy DWA Women’s group whoe enjoyed their camp last weekend. Pic - Georgia Verschoyle

9. Ruined Castle is best when not a castle in the clouds. More fun in the sun. 10. When you fall, get back up in your own damned time. 11. When your snowboarding heel edge gives you severe muscle spasms, jump in a sit ski and satisfy your need for speed and scenery, and learn some wack new snow skills. 12. Always give the guides a victory donut (the hot jam donuts are vegan apparently). 13. There is always another way to do things, be adaptive and creative. 14. Be kind to yourself. 15. What happens on the snow stays on the snow.

COMFORTABLE SKIING Flexen groovin’

F

lex may be the ‘be-all and end-all’ of a ski boot identity, but it’s a pretty fluid concept. Check out the flex rating on your boot compared to your friends. They might have the same number but move completely differently. Boots used to be super stiff. When we used to use 220cm long skis, the ski tip was more than a metre away. Getting your pressure to it was a tough gig. Ski technique at the time involved a whole lot more twisting than flexing. You were likely to break your leg before you bent the boot. With shorter shaped skis and the associated change in technique, boots became a bit softer, though they were still being driven by race-boot design. As skis evolved into something resembling the sticks we now see on shelves, boots got softer again. These days they ride a fine line between allowing you to absorb surface changes while staying centred on the shorter skis and being able to drive your weight into the tip of the ski.

skiing sedately on a beginner slope. Once you’re in control – back on the bell curve with the rest of us. The boot can’t tell how technically gifted you are as a skier, but it does know how much you weigh and how fast you’re going. It doesn’t know that you ski like an out of control Muppet (Kermit the frog is my spiritual ski guide he’s wavy, is loud, and is totally committed) but it can tell how enthusiastic you are on your ski. I’ve got a husband who skis like Animal – yells a lot, hits anything in sight and wears a crazy look on his face – we don’t weigh the same and yet the flex of our boots are rated the same (different brands measure differently). Getting your technique right is a combination of getting you in the correct position on the ski and getting the right message to your skis. The first step towards either of these goals is infinitely improved by having a correctly set up pair of boots. Getting the flex of the boot right for you is

In an effort to make boots more comfortable, such as the sad case of the Rossignol ‘Soft’ experiment, boots got way softer and basically just sucked. Now we’re back to boots that should offer you somewhere between 70mm to 100mm of forward knee movement once the boot is engaged. Most skiers sit happily somewhere on the bell curve. We weigh between 50 and 100kg and most of the time we ski between 30 and 60 km/hr. Except for professionals (racers, instructors, ski patrollers) and seasoned ski bums of your flavour of choice, we all benefit from a relatively stiff ski boot. If it’s your first week ever on skis, you need a softer boot that will allow you to experience the correct ski position while

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Recap From Nationals Part One

T

he first round of Australian National Championships took place last weekend here at Falls Creek. All those who competed and came to help volunteer or support know that it was a successful weekend of competitive racing upon some good quality race trails. Saturday brought a classic sprint event. The course was 1.4km which wound up the Hoppet starts and came back via BHP road and back to the bowl along the aquaduct. On an overcast/drizzly day, the numbers were promising with more than 30 in the

men’s field and almost 20 in the women’s field. Dual Olympian Phil Bellingham dusted off the skis and poles and took the prologue victory with Kat Paul narrowly ahead of Casey Wright in the women’s prologue. Both courses taking almost four minutes to complete for a lot of the competitors. The heats brought a quarter final, semi-final and final with the top 16 competitors from the prologue going through. This was a great opportunity for many young juniors to see what it is like competing with senior skiers and to get a feel for the pace and race tactics in sprint racing. In the finals were Phil Bellingham, Seve de Campo, Lauro Brandli (who is a visitor from Switzerland), and junior skier Bentley Walker-Broose. After using his World Cup racing experience and making a decent break midway through the final, Phil Bellingham took home the chocolates five seconds ahead of de Campo, with Brandli rounding out the podium. In the women’s, Kat Paul managed to narrowly hold off a late charge from Casey Wright in a good old fashioned sprint finish, captivating the crowd. Ella Jackson skied with great gusto to round off the podium.

On Sunday, a larger field competed in the 10/15km Freestyle event. It was a larger field because naturally a few more weekend warriors enter these events, still having a bit of kick in the distance events. A similar course to previous years took athletes out Sun Valley and up the Pines, back down to loop through the Nordic Bowl. The women went off first; Casey Wright held a strong lead throughout the lead to take a fairly commanding victory. Kat Paul found a great wind of energy late to take second place, perhaps she heard her mate Lauro cheering from the sidelines. Second to sixth place was hotly contested all race with young gun Rosie Fordham claiming the bronze. Rosie is also heading off to compete at the National All Schools cross country running championships later this month! In the men’s, it was a bit of a battle for first place with Phil Bellingham holding on to a 22second lead to make the weekend double. Phil raced in his new blue AUSXC development team tour race suit which he used as the head coach for AusXC last winter in Canada. Seve de Campo had to cop second place, although was reasonably satisfied with the race overall. Yes, I speak about myself in the third person. Olympian Callum Watson rounded off the podium with a pretty solid hit out despite most of his baseline training being running to and from work in Sydney. Age group categories were also given on the Sunday, notably Tom McMahon making the U30 podium and boy was he stoked about that!

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Overall a great weekend of racing and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to round two of National Championships in Perisher in two weeks. A big thankyou to all the organisers, volunteers and supporters out there last weekend. On behalf of the athletes it was a fun weekend of racing. A Note from Anne Bellingham The Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club hosted the first FIS event on the Australian cross country ski calendar last weekend Both courses were first class, on well prepared tracks, thanks to our dedicated team of xc groomers and volunteers. Results were as follows: Open Women Classic Sprint Champion 1. Katerina Paul. 2. Casey Wright

What’s Coming Up? This Sunday the 4th August is Round Three of the Snow Trek & Travel Mini Series with a 2.5, 1.5 and 0.5km event around the Nordic Bowl. This one is a great beginner event so make sure to get involved if this sounds like you. Next weekend, the 11th of August is the infamous Rocky Valley Rush/ Sun Valley Ramble 15/7.5km freestyle. Grooming Report Whilst snow accumulations haven’t been incredible this season, the good thing is as XC skiers, we don’t need so much to be very happy. There has been some great weather and from all reports the groomers have been doing a good job. Temperatures have been nice and cold. My personal recommendation is to check out Pretty Valley! • Seve de Campo

AVALANCHES AND TRAINING Know Before You Go

M

any among us will remember the tragedy on Mt Bogong in July 2014 when two young men got caught in an avalanche and perished as a result. This was a very unfortunate situation where two people lost their lives in tragic circumstances. The conditions at the time of the incident were just after a large storm had passed, depositing lots of new snow in combination with high winds, a recipe for increased snowpack loading and heightened avalanche risk. Unfortunately, as with most avalanche incidents, the avalanche was triggered by human activity. Besides the heuristic elements (mind set) of why humans make the decisions they do, several important ingredients are also contributing factors. Firstly, in Australia, unlike other countries such as New Zealand, USA and Canada, we have no official Public Avalanche Forecasting system in place. In fact when the big storms arrive, the media has a tendency to brand the storm with names like ‘Snowmageddon’ or ‘The Blizzard of Oz’ thereby creating hype or a feeding frenzy within the skiing community. There are some websites & blogs looking to provide information but no structured government backed official system. Discussions are underway which

PHYSIOTHERAPY

will hopefully see this change at some stage in the future. Then we have to deal with the fact that the interest in back country skiing and riding is growing at a rapid pace. People have become more interested for many reasons including scarcity of fresh snow, social media or simply to get away from the resort crowds. Combine this with the evolution in equipment and the accessibility for the average person has never been easier. Two major missing ingredients for the safety of these keen (and often not that experienced) back country explorers are public forecasting which is essential for public safety awareness and the necessary training to help people make informed, responsible decisions. In general, there are two major categories of avalanche – they being loose snow avalanches and slab avalanches. This second type, the slab avalanche being the particularly dangerous type.

In the summer months, (which we describe as everything not winter), the location can be easily accessed by car with adequate parking out front or nearby. Also, right outside your front door for the duration of the summer months is the mountain bike centre of Falls Creek. While the quality of your enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted, it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds untold value to a purchase in the village. Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with most being accessed from Slalom Plaza. Add to these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your exploring, whether on foot or on your bike is endless. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria. The afore-mentioned suite of summer activities includes Ignition – the launch of the mountain bike season; the Alpine Challenge; the Mile High Dragon Boats; the regional Longest Lunch; the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek; the Easter Festival as well as regular mountain bike shuttles. This is a rare opportunity to secure a property in the most prestigious complex in Falls Creek. Price is $675,000. Contact Ted Weeks at Falls Creek Real Estate on Mb: 0456 022 211. •
