Snowing in both Hemispheres

Coming out of the longest night of the year and passing through the winter solstice, it was amazing to see that in the Northern Hemisphere, as they celebrated the unofficial first day of Summer, many of the North American resorts received up to 60cm of the good stuff …aka snow.

Meanwhile in the Antipodes, it’s been a mixed bag! We were blessed with some of the best early snowfalls on record, then a little too much pre frozen snow (can’t bring myself to say that dirty four letter word, that starts with ‘R’ and rhymes with Spain) and now crystal clear nights that have seen the snowmaking crews working overtime and capitalising on the conditions to ensure a great early season experience can be had.

The Falls Creek Lift Co team have done brilliantly - making megalitres upon megalitres of snow every night to restore the snowpack and provide a boilerplate foundation for when the natural snow returns. And it will… just looking at the last five years, except for 2015 and 2017, by the time you are reading this, the snow depth charts traditionally begin their upward trajectory. Note: even though 2017 didn’t start great… BOY when it did, it kept coming thanks to the ‘Blizzards of Oz’ that puked down right through until the end of season.

A key differentiating factor at Falls Creek, is not just the southerly aspect of much of the terrain, or the progression perfect range of ski runs, nor its 110ha of snowmaking ability… BUT the piece de resistance is…

Visitor Information Centre

The Falls Creek Visitor Information Centre is located in the Resort Management Office, up stairs on the corner of Slalom Street and Bogong High Plains Road. Open 8am – 5pm daily for Visitor Information and Gym Memberships. Ph: 03 5758 1202. (Map Ref: E4)

Resort Entry

Resort Entry is located at Howman’s Gap, approx. 4km before reaching Falls Creek. Day and Night passes are $56.50 on arrival per day, (or $51.50 on line). If arriving after 5pm and departing prior to midnight on the same day, entry is free. Visitors over 65 years of age receive a discount.

Season Passes are available at $555 (or $475 on line).

An ‘All Resorts’ permit, valid at all Victorian Snow Resorts is available for $787.00. Enquire at the Visitor Information Centre desk.

Resort Entry Fees fund the essential services of:

• Ski patrol • Car Parking

• Snow Clearing • Water Supply

• Waste Management • Visitor Information Services

Rocky Valley Lake (or Dam…). In times of low natural snowfall, the 28,000,000,000 litres held beneath its 250ha surface area (note it’s 90m down at its deepest point), is the envy of every ski resort in Australia. As part of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, the catchment area is fed via the natural topography of the Bogong High Plains and 32kms of aqueducts that feed water into the Lake. Once captured, water is pushed through 18kms of tunnels and down through four power stations. In a relative context the water used for snow making equates to less than 1% of its total volume, even in the biggest of years. (Sorry, I forgot, its school holidays, the history and geography lessons are over!)

On that topic, to all those reading this, who’ve come here to spend time in the school holiday period, on behalf of the entire resort and our community, I’d like to offer a huge welcome and thankyou to all our guests and visitors who’ve chosen to visit us here at Falls Creek.

Of course, with the holiday season, the resort ups its ante and activations throughout the village begin to take life as well as the ‘on piste’ event schedule cranking up too. So, be sure to check out the events page at www.fallscreek. com.au as there are some great new additions this season, with something for everyone, all season long.

You’ll find pretty much every event under the ‘At the Resort’ drop down and you’ll be able to stay up to speed on everything that is happening. If it’s not in there, then the ‘What’s on Guide’ will have the current weeks program. Also, make sure to download the Falls Creek App to get notifications on lifts, night skiing, promotions, lessons and the like too.

Oh, and if it’s your first hit out on the slopes for a while, or you’re just a bit rusty, dust off the cobwebs with a lesson, or two. Kick the bad habits out early, reactivate the muscle memory right and enjoy a ripper start to your season with Australia’s best ski school.

Foodie Tip of the Week: Huski Kitchen… Craving some south-east Asian dishes, then this is a must. Dinner here for five was outstanding and beyond tasty. The selection of plates designed for sharing is very well thought out. The starters, Salt & Pepper Squid with Tempura Veggies only whet the palate for the taste sensation that’s to follow. The Massaman Curry & Potatoes – boom, it packs a kick, but is just right… the Pad Thai… on point and delicious, the Crispy Pork Belly left the plate in record time and the Braised Beef Ribs fell apart! Then, the Crispy King Prawns, eaten shell and all (sans the head, but including the tail) were crunchy and delicious with the chilli dressing lip-smackingly good – I dare you. All this was washed down with the Domenica “Two Cells” Chardonnay from Beechworth. Bookings on; 03 5758 3863.

Beginner Beginner, Chicken Dinner!

Can you remember the first time you saw snow? What about the first time you skied or boarded? Did you learn as a child or an adult? Did you take to it like a duck to water or did you throw your arms up in despair?

Would it surprise you to learn that almost 85% (global stat) of first timer guests don’t come back? For the ski industry, that’s a pretty depressing figure and an opportunity lost. The reasons for this level of conversion failure are many and varied, but the bottom line is that it’s hard. Adults in particular can really struggle with it and in Australia, the approach to adult Snowsports lessons could certainly be improved. I’m not sure that the typical two hour group lesson is yielding the best results.

So, over the summer we thought we’d have a crack at trying to break this first time skier conversion statistics. We’ve taken a leaf out of the European book and this season we’ve introduced an ‘All Day Beginner Skier’ program for adults. Designed to take a more relaxed, social and tailored approach to one’s progression, we hope this program will help beginners achieve a greater sense of confidence and capability and have them skiing home using one of our many home trails from day one.

To further assist in consolidating confidence levels, we’re also trialling an initiative to guide first timers (whose instructors have

given them the ‘thumbs up’) along the home trails at the end of the day to help them orient themselves with the mountain, making sure they don’t overshoot their turn off and seeing them safely into the village at the nearest point to their accommodation. Imagine the sense of accomplishment, if every beginner skier/boarders could end their day on snow in this way. We’re hoping that this approach will help fuel a snow obsession like our own and seeing first timers returning to Falls Creek and returning often.

If you’re an adult beginner, or you know others who are, I encourage you to book in at the Falls Creek Snowsports School for our new ‘All Day Beginner Program’ and reap the benefits of a program tailored for success.

Our Falls Creek Snowsports School offers an extensive variety of ski and snowboard programs, catering to children and adults of all abilities. We’re here to drive your passion for snowsports, develop your skills and get the most out of your on-snow experience!

Paw Patrol Snowclub (3 - 5 years)

Full & half day programs – see your child’s love of skiing grow as their skills progress! Specialised lessons include professional full-time staff, full day or half day options, delicious lunchtime meals, progress cards and all in a word class learning environment. A favourite of the Nickelodeon Paw Patrol puppies!

• Full day: 09:15am – 2:50pm • Half day: 9:15am – 1:00pm • PM lesson only: 1:15pm – 2:50pm Registration from 09:15am and 1:15pm, with lessons commencing at 10:00am and 1:30pm.

Junior Workshop (6 – 14 years)

This year, our full day ride tribe program will commence at blue level and up. High-end Ride Tribe groups will hit the parks, freeride the mountain and most importantly, have a tonne of fun with other ripping teenagers. The program includes constant supervision, full day lessons, delicious lunchtime meals and progress cards.

Adult Programs (15+)

Develop your skiing or snowboarding skills in our group lessons, designed to cater for adults of all ability levels.

air skills, go high, go big or go home! The Big Air is a new event for Falls Creek this season and will be taking place in the Ruined Castle Terrain Park.

This event will be open to both Skiers and Boarders with both U/16 and open categories.

Slopestyle - 24th August

This event is a Slopestyle format, utilising the array of world-class terrain park features we have at here Falls Creek.

Held on Lookers left of the Ruined Castle terrain park this event will cater for everyone! With a medium and large line, everyone can get involved for the chance to win some rad gear and cash prizes! Open to both skiers and boarders, slopestyle is judged on overall run impression which takes into account, amplitude, difficulty, variety of tricks and execution.

Bandwagon Banked Slalom - 14th September

This event is the ultimate Banked Slalom for those snowboarders who love a bumpy ride!

One of the last events for the Falls Freestyle series in 2019, the BBS is a competition not for the faint hearted. There will be berms, jumps, bumps and spills galore when the community and visitors alike come together to wind their way through Falls Creek’s brand new course.

This year the banked slalom will only be open to snowboarders.

Make sure you get involved in the Western Theme of the day - there will be prizes for best dressed!

Junior A gility Race - Saturday 6th July

The Junior Agility race is the perfect opportunity for school ski teams, race clubs or individuals to gain valuable pre-season race experience. This race focuses on the athlete being able to move through a variety of different gate formats and terrain changes, making the first race an ideal building platform for the season ahead. The event is designed for intermediate-advanced skiers and snowboarders aged 6 – 16.

FALLS CREEK ALPINE ASSOCIATION

Join Up!

The Falls Creek Alpine Association (FCAA) represents the interests of ratepayers including ski clubs, apartment owners, individuals and some commercial operators at Falls Creek.

The FCAA’s membership represents about 25% of the on-mountain beds at Falls Creek and delivers our views and voice to the FCRM Board via the Falls Creek Strategic Stakeholder Group.

For over sixteen years the FCAA has represented the interests of its member at Falls Creek and now has 41 member organisations comprising over 5,000 individuals.

The FCAA is a not-for-profit group that provides a voice into the many arms of the Victorian government and regulatory organisations effecting our membership, where FCAA seeks to influence policy that impacts their members before it is adopted.

Being a member of the FCAA provides access to a source of valuable knowledge on a wide range of information on Falls Creek. This includes access to our knowledge base which has been developed over many years and covers a wide range of matters including service providers (trades, builders, insurers etc), advice on building regulations, lease renewal processes, local planning issue information, local information released by the FCRM Board. In addition, our highly developed network of organisations are quite happy to discuss their experiences with other members.

Further benefits of FCAA membership are:

• The Road to Falls Creek member card which offers deals and exclusive offers available only to FCAA members.

• The Mountain Muster, our flagship social event is held each Queens birthday weekend at Falls Creek. This event provides FCAA members with the opportunity to get together in a social environment and hear updated information on Falls Creek and the alpine industry in Victoria. It is open to all FCAA members.

• The FCAA also makes donations to Falls

The modest FCAA annual membership fees contribute to the operation of the organisation, donations and the Mountain Muster event. The elected FCAA committee members are all honorary and there are no staff.

Camps Program

One of the standout images of Disabled Wintersports Australia (DWA) at Falls Creek for many visitors is a big group of volunteer adaptive guides, skiers of varying disability and various pieces of adaptive ski equipment gathering around the base of Halley’s Comet most Saturday and Sunday mornings of the ski season. This activity is associated with one of our key activities, facilitated weekend camps.

Looking after all these people, their varying needs and the equipment to support them both on and off snow is a logistical challenge to say the least. The person responsible for this is our Victorian Camps Coordinator, a role being very capably managed for the second season by Ken Payne. In Victoria our camps are based out of Howman’s Gap Alpine Centre where DWA is a partner in a fantastic building that was commissioned last year. The AAA building is the only fully accessible in-snow accommodation facility in Australia.

The DWA camps program consists of Organisation Camps and Members Camps. The Organisation Camps are weekend camps facilitated by DWA on behalf of various disability organisations such as Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Spina Bifida Foundation and Disability Sport and Recreation. Member Camps are open to all DWA members and can include people with a broad range of disabilities on the same weekend.

The weekend camps are hectic events for participants, carers, volunteer guides and of

course Ken. A typical weekend camp will start with the participants arriving typically by minibus on Friday afternoon. The afternoon and early evening are consumed with fitting up adaptive equipment, sorting out ski and board hire, organising lift passes and lessons, ensuring that all participants are adequately clothed and understanding the individual needs and goals of each participant. Later Friday evening another minibus arrives at Howman’s Gap with the guides, many who travel up from Melbourne to give their weekend up to helping others.

Saturday and Sunday are all go… up early each morning, getting organised, up to the resort and out on snow. Days are jam packed with on-snow activity and heaps of fun times. By the time participants and guides head back to Melbourne late Sunday afternoon it is two minibuses packed with very tired and worn out people.

DWA relies on the support of many people and organisations to be able to conduct our Camps Program. As well as the ongoing support of the Resort, Falls Creek Ski Lifts and Cloud 9 Restaurant this year we are really pleased to have Volkswagen Australia on board as the vehicle sponsor for both our Victorian and New South Wales camps programs. Last week Ken travelled up to Sydney on the train and had the luxury of travelling back in a brand-new Volkswagen Amarok which will be used to transport equipment and will be seen prominently around the Alpine Resort. Early Season Snow Hunting

As I sit up here writing this, it’s nice and sunny. Maybe six or seven degrees today which is quite hot for a mountain. Glorious though. Whilst by the time you read this it is either pouring down rain or belting down snow, hopefully the latter, there is a bit of ‘fun’ to be had early in the season exploring what there is on offer and ‘hunting’ for some early season XC turns. Last week my younger brother and I had a ‘two hour level one’ session planned and so whilst the grooming report on FallsCreek.com said that there was 0kms groomed, we thought we would

be optimistic and see what snow we could find. So, we headed out in our runners, poles and skis in hand and ski boots in the backpack.

With no idea what awaited us, we ran up to the McKay Road to see a 5cm firm covering of snow where the aqueduct joins up. We put our skis on thinking maybe we would just be ‘mad in the head’ and do two hours back and forth on a nice 200metre strip of snow along McKay Road. Rest assured, although my brother says he was willing to do so, we quickly discovered that all of the aqueduct right over to the Frying Pan was covered in skidoo-groomed-snow. So we did a bit of that, running across some grassy patches on our ‘race skis that were no longer race skis’ (haha no just kidding - we were on full-blooded rock hoppers).

Next we thought “ok, well it’s not too bad down here, maybe if we go up higher it could be even better?” So we took the Wombat’s Ramble highway (NB: XC skiers are not allowed to ski on the Ramble anymore) up to McKay road were we were

delighted with the snow cover, all the way up to the top of McKay, albeit rough grooming. Doing the whole McKay top loop with a trip down to Pretty Valley completed our two hour ski that morning and it was very satisfying to say the least. Highlights include; Skiing back down McKay on what looked like snow - only to have my legs almost completely taken out from under me by some submerged rock activity. Another highlight, wearing shorts and a T-shirt and feeling like it was spring. Final highlight, coming back down Wombat’s Ramble at the end and just pulling out some fat teles (telemark turns) in front of some punter downhill skiers. A bit of an adventure, a bit of early season fun, not too bad.

Recap from Europe 2018/19

This weekend the Senior National XC Ski Team has their June Training Camp here at Falls Creek as well as the Junior Team having their Winter Training Camp the following week. Depending on the snow conditions there will be a mixture of skiing, running, bounding, and gym on the plan. The national team athletes have all returned and from the Northern Hemisphere and have been training since April/May again in preparation for the next European Season. Most of the Senior and Junior Team was based in Davos, Switzerland over December to February with the main competition focus of the Seniors being the Seefeld 2019 World Ski Championships in Austria and the Juniors being the World Junior/U23 Championships in Lahti, Finland. With the National Team Head Coach, Valerio Leccardi, growing up in Davos, it made for a great training facility for the athletes. Huge mountains and sunny days (and depositing large amounts of money in Swiss bank accounts).

I was part of the Junior/U23 team which competed in Lahti in Finland at

the World Junior Champs in January. It was my first-time skiing in Finland, and it was incomparable to any skiing I’ve done in Australia that’s for sure. The week of competitions was very cold with temperatures below -10°C each day. The junior boys and girls 15 and 30km events were held in -18°C. The sun only came up for a few hours each day, rising around 9am and going down around 3pm. When snow is that cold it gets very slow and sticky. We had to wear tape on our faces each day as well to avoid skin damage from the cold air. This was some of the coolest skiing I’d done in a while and of course it was really fun battling it out against countries across the world. A highlight for me may have been the 30km classic event on the last day where I fought out the whole race alongside a Slovakian and a Chinese!

In contrast, I was also lucky enough to be a part of the team competing at the World Senior Championships in Seefeld, Austria. This was the official world champs for cross country skiing and they are held every two years. I was part of an older team with the likes of Olympians Phil Bellingham, Barbara Jezersek, Aimee Watson and Jessica Yeaton as well as team mates Mark Pollock and Kat Paul. Being my first experience of a World Champs, it was quite overwhelming at times with huge crowds of people flocking to the stadium every day and a crazy amount of athletes from all over the world. At the champs, Jessica Yeaton achieved the best result at a World Champs by a cross country skier coming 22nd in the skiathlon which was really exciting for us. In stark contrast to Finland, each day the temperatures rose to at least above 5 degrees and for my 15km classic event I was skiing

at 3pm in the afternoon in 11 degrees in a t-shirt. These conditions definitely helped some athletes more than others. Overall it was a fantastic experience to see the sport of cross country skiing in its full glory. Seeing that many people dress up and come support and to see the best athletes in the world on show was eye opening and unforgettable. I’ve definitely come back to Aus with some perspective and motivation to be fighting up the top with them in the years to come.

Next weekend is the first set of races here at Falls Creek, obviously dependant on snow conditions, we are on track for the Snow Trek and Travel Mini Series on Saturday the 6th of July and the Birkebeiner Ski Classic on Sunday the 7th. SUCCESS IN NEPAL

Bobby Conquers The Triple

On Monday 27 May in Nepal, Bobby Bajram came one step closer to achieving his dream of climbing Everest in 2021 by conquering the final peak of Mt Lobuche East.

On May 10, Bobby left Australia with expedition leader Andrew Lock to fly to Nepal and commence the task of climbing Base camp (5,380m), Mt Kala Patthar (5,644m) and Mt Lobuche East (6,119m). Commonly known as ‘The Triple’ and never attempted by a disabled athlete before, this climb measures a total of 17,143m and is considered the test climb in preparation of Everest. Climbing with Andrew and his Sherpas, Bobby has now completed this

“I couldn’t even see the top of Lobuche, and I was done, my body was shutting down and I wanted to give up, but I knew I had to prove I could do it, that I am one of the most extreme athletes in the world with a disability. Andrew told me now was the time to prove it and I knew I had to man up and just do it for all the people with disabilities around the world” said Bobby, “without Andrew and my Sherpas I couldn’t have done it, he pointed me in the right direction and they spurred me on and then I crawled on my hands and knees 400m to the summit.

I couldn’t see, there were drops either side of me, but I kept telling myself ‘man up, suck it up’. It took me an hour and fifteen minutes but I did it. When I reached the

top I sat there and cried and I thought about my family and I felt proud, because I said I would do it, and I did. I’ve done this for everyone with a disability around the world, if I can do it, then you can do whatever you want to do too.”

It’s been a long time coming for Bobby Bajram, Australia’s youngest diagnosed MS sufferer. He has spent years training to prepare himself for extreme conditions including below zero temperatures and winds up to 160km per hour. The conditions are unforgiving, temperamental, and treacherous. Oxygen is limited and tragically 11 climbers have lost their lives in the past two weeks attempting to climb Everest – a tragedy not lost on Bobby, his team and his legions of fans. In order to withstand these conditions and succeed, Bobby has dedicated years of his life to an intense training regime including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at the National Institute of Medicine and Altitude Acclimatisation.

In preparation for his Everest campaign, a fundraising campaign has been created calling for $1 from Australians who would like to see Bobby achieve his dream. The “Buck for Bobby” campaign will attempt to raise the money before he leaves for Everest next year. Bobby is your typical Aussie Battler, an average bloke dealt an even more average hand in life. Rather than sit back and wait to die, he chose to live his life to the fullest and work towards achieving his dreams. Bobby is proof that you can live with a disability and still achieve your dreams.

When You Hit the Ski Wall

Ever feel like your skiing is staying the same, despite efforts to improve? Sounds like you have hit a learning plateau. There are lots of reasons why this might be, but here’s a few to consider. The quick and steady gains you make when starting skiing keeps you motivated by exploring more of the mountain with each leap you make. But when you get to a certain level, the improvements are going to be smaller and harder to see. This is where you must find your own motivation – check out the local race club kids for some inspiration. Find that skill that freaks you out (maybe it’s a steep run with jump turns?) and plan small steps to tackle it. Maybe you need some ticks on your score card?

Motivation may not be your issue. It might be that you get to ski one to two weeks a year which isn’t enough time for the ski movements to feel ‘natural.’ That’s where you need some advice from a pro. A lesson with an instructor that you are on the same

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?

Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

MR: How did you get into riding?

Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

Fear, fitness and time on skis might be obvious causes for a learning plateau, but what if it’s something else? Look no further than your equipment. This is not a cop out. Sometimes, you can blame your equipment. If you’re getting consistent feedback from different instructors, but still can’t make your ski do what it’s told, then look no further than your boots. Ski boots are set up to fit what the manufacturers think will fit the ‘masses.’ But are you the mass? No, you’re an individual and an individual setup for ski boots is crucial in having control of your skis.

Your ski boots dictate how you stand and how much you can move. Perhaps your boot is too stiff and in order to control your ski you need to sit in the back seat and steer with the ball of your foot? Or perhaps the cuff isn’t allowing for your bowed legs, and instead of getting on your inside edge, pushing your leg inwards just makes your ski flat and out of control? Perhaps the forward lean is too aggressive? The list goes on and on and on, but you see what I’m

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.

MR: How many national events have you raced?

Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

MR: What are your goals for this year, more EWS or is going to be too hard to juggle school?

Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.

MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer?

Ben: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side.

MR: Do you think you’d be able to develop a career and race at the same time?

Ben: Yeah, looking at someone like Paul

On Saturday 22nd June the Mount Beauty Soccer Club proudly hosted its 2019 Soccer Gala days. Under 6, 7, 9 and 11 teams travelled from neighbouring towns of Bright, Myrtleford, Yackandandah and Benalla to attack the goals on the pitch of the Mount Beauty recreation reserve (Cricket ground).

To maximise your appreciation of the resort, a visit to the museum is a must. Open from 12noon until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday, the museum is fantastic. There are many relics and some great films from many days back and it presents a fantastic insight into how our village grew.

The format was exciting. The under 6 and 7’s play four against four no goalkeeper and it’s on like donkey kong. The tackles were impressive and the massive end to end 20m runs following the ball like a swarm of bees was entertaining. To that end our Under 6’s gave it their all and did not have a goal scored against them all day. Well done boys and girl.

Speaking of museum, the historical society – and in particular one Karen Smythe –has done a fabulous job of putting this

We even had some players from other teams filling up our numbers at one stage. This was to the delight of the young Yackandandah boy who pulled on a red and black jersey and played against the team his mum was coaching.

For me, it was my first gala day ever. It was a hoot. The spirit of community was high and fair play between teams palpable - like one big north east community. The kids would play a game, celebrate the highs and lows, shake hands and then move on. Volunteer coaches running the sidelines coaching and refereeing simultaneously, shouting encouragements on the way was a real bonus to witness. The beauty of a gala day is that it is not a round robin or tournament; it’s about participation and wins and losses mean no more than the 20 minute game they just played. There’s a

fresh slate for the next game and indeed for the next gala.

It can and does happen - and it can be prevented. Read on. Previously we have quoted figures for this article. But, even without them, the common sense aspect of ambulance insurance is a ‘no-brainer.’

As an example of costs, just from your editor’s experience, is like this. Twenty years ago, the cost per hour of a simple Lama Helicopter to swing lift towers in to place was $1000 per hour - without the fuel component. To run a modern, fully equipped, fully fitted out Bell Iroquois 412EP, complete with highly trained pilots and paramedics around the countryside is not a cheap exercise. Think about it!!

Ambulance membership is cheap. A family membership is now $89.80 per year. A single person membership is now $44.90 per year. In my humble opinion, these figures are way too cheap - but no-one can ever say they could not afford Ambulance Membership.

“I got ambulance cover just before heading off with my mates on a snowboarding trip to Mt Buller. I had been thinking about cover and thought I’d be unlikely to need it but had a few minutes free so opened my laptop and joined online in the car park of the campsite. It took me five minutes and was really easy and really cheap - especially compared to the other ski field costs. We had a great weekend but my trip ended abruptly when I ran out of talent, came off a jump and broke three ribs and collapsed a lung. I ended up in an Air Ambulance to the Royal Melbourne. The trip in the air ambulance would have cost me $7,500 but I didn’t even see a bill. I could have had two lifetimes worth of cover and still been ahead. The fall certainly caused me a lot of pain but I’m fully recovered now and it’s a great relief that I don’t have to deal with a huge bill on top of everything else. I’ve recommended it to all my mates and they can’t believe how cheap it is for what you get - cheaper than a slab and it lasts a full year!”

TIPS FOR SNOW DRIVING

Keep Sand or Salt! Getting stuck in the snow is the worst, and the more you try to accelerate out of it, the more you dig yourself deeper. Adding some sand or salt in front of your tyre will provide the traction the tyre needs for you to drive your way out. Keep a bag in your boot if possible.
