THE FANTASTIC McKAYOS

The Only Snow MTB Race

Back on Saturday 5th of October Falls Creek celebrated the 5th year of the marquee McKayos mountain bike race with a record 335 riders competing. Billed as a snow dirt and road enduro, the race takes mountain bikers from 1760m above sea level in the Falls Creek ski fields to the shores of Lake Guy in Bogong Village at 660m.

Riders traversed 15km for a total descent of 1100m through a challenging course that included a mass start on snow, a race through the alpine village streets and slippery single-track mountain bike trails. Warm temperatures in the lead up to the event meant that the spectacular mass start was made all the more challenging with large stretches of dirt separating the snowsections.

World Cup rider Chris Panozzo was first across the line in a thrilling dash for the finish between himself and Ben McIlroy (2017 and 2018 winner). Panozzo has been a podium placer in each of the past four years of the event, finally earning the ultimate prize by the smallest of margins –one second in front of McIlroy and less than a minute in front of Mount Beauty teenager Jonah Cosgriff in third place.

In the women’s category, Beechworth local Lia Ladbrook fought off a similarly close result to finish 20 seconds in front of 2018 winner Goele Schmitz. Last year’s second placed Bec Feltrin took third place honours for a third year straight of podium finishes.

Falls Creek Resort Management Marketing Director, Jo Prothero, said the race was enjoyed by all, including herself.

“This year was my first year of racing and it was an experience like no other. Seeing 350 riders on the start line was confronting but such an amazing experience once the starter’s gun was off and it was time to race.”

“Falls Creek is ready to move into its summer mountain biking season in late November and what better way to do this than with a mountain bike race on the last weekend of the ski season. We have so many unique experiences here and McKayos is the perfect example of what a spectacular place Falls Creek is to visit.”

As the riders clattered over the finish line and took in a deep breath, it was time to get rid of the helmet and gloves and enjoy a fantastic egg and bacon roll – all lovingly gourmet prepared by members of the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty – who do this work as part of their regular fund-raising efforts. Then it was on to the bus and back up to Falls for the Presos and after-party.

Yep – another fabulously successful McKayos. Put it on your calendar for next year. •

An Award Winning Play

I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

A Life to Remember

We have added 2 new categories this year, an e-MTB category for both male and female and a “Le Petit Enduro”. The “Le Petit enduro” category is designed for new riders to gravity enduro format and racing, it is shortened to 4 stages and will not include the Honeysuckle stage.

Age categories will be taken from your age on 29th March 2020 – this being the date of the last race in the series.

The U15 category will not include the Honeysuckle stage, to reduce the overall race time as per MTBA recommendations. Riders must be 13 years or older on 29th March 2020 to enter.

A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. Friends are welcome to pass this invite on and it is understood that members of Lyn’s family will be in attendance. • Trade Fair @ Falls Creek

ocal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

• Rider numbers capped at 300. • Some categories are able to do the + stage 6 option for an additional charge. Stage 6 is the elite track, most difficult. Riders who add stage 6 will also receive an extra shuttle ride on the Saturday. On race day you will be able to get a time on stage 6 BUT you will still be your series category for the event. This is aimed at giving the riders of non-elite categories the opportunity to ride the elite track, whilst

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.

• The “Le Petit Enduro” category is for riders who are new to Enduro or desire a shorter race. It will be 4 stages with 2 liaisons from bottom to top and 2 short liaisons.

MR: How many national events have you raced?

Please note: Full-face helmets are mandatory. Protective equipment as per MTBA requirements for Gravity. •

To be held at the Frying Pan Inn, in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek, the Trade Fair will take place on Tuesday 2nd May from 10am to 5pm and again on Wednesday 3rd, from 9am to 4pm.

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?

From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.

Companies invited to exhibit include Bedding Suppliers, Linen, Manchester and Window Furnishing suppliers, Wine and Spirit merchants, Wholesale Food Suppliers, Chemical, Cleaning and Toiletry suppliers and equipment suppliers. Prepare for the season and save money. Visit the Trade Fair @ Falls Creek. Further details from: Mb: 0400 350 488. •

MR: How did you get into riding?

Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

Time to get out and enjoy!

Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?

We have plants, seedlings, seeds, mulches and fertilisers, top soils and tools – in fact, everything you will need for your spring gardening success!

Do you have cracked window/glass/door that needs repair?

Fitness Tip

Kindly brought to you by Emily and Lee at Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage.

With Summer approaching, hydration becomes even more important for the human body. As we sweat, our body tries to return to its optimal temperature. However, as this process occurs, we lose body fluid which we need to replace. Dehydration can lead to headaches, decrease in concentration, impaired motor control and decision making abilities, raised temperature and heart rate, fatigue and difficulty with other bodily functions. To avoid dehydration, try to keep an insulated re-usable water bottle available close-by, and, to keep it cooler add some frozen ice cubes. For added natural flavour, try adding a few slices of fresh lemon or lime - which also have great health benefits, too! •
