Champagne Club Fire Festival

2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

The Valley Fire Festival in Tawonga South drew in young and old alike to enjoy a spectacular bonfire and entertainment last Saturday night as part of The Feast High Country Festival.

The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention in the article with Ben McIlroy.

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.

Over 150 people warmed their toes and toasted marshmallows at the firepits (kindly provided by Mike and Rachael at Whipps Designs) while live music provided a warming atmosphere. Children enjoyed the LED hoop workshop with our guest fire performer before she lit up the night with her exciting performances. The enormous bonfire was set alight just after sunset and burned high into the night thrilling everyone present. President Jodi Mann said “This is the biggest bonfire that our chief bonfire builder Greg McLennan has assembled. Every single year he ups the ante, it really was a pleasure to see it being lit up”

The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. This event is proudly run by the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley, a local not for profit community group and supported by the Alpine Shire. Many local individuals and businesses have also provided invaluable support and assistance to make this event happen. Funds raised from the event will go to support the Champagne Club’s local assistance and giving program which has just donated $1000 to the local Anglicare Emergency Relief Service.

Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

Falls Creek has celebrated the falling of pre-season snow by opening registrations for the annual Fight MND Ice Plunge. A decade-long tradition at Falls Creek, the Ice Plunge welcomes the first day of winter with a mass plunge into the cool cool waters of Rocky Valley Lake. At 1600m above sea level, Rocky Valley Lake is Australia’s highest significant body of water. Air temperatures are commonly around 0°C at this altitude and water temperatures are expected to be around 3°C to 4°C.

This event is both a celebration and a valuable community initiative. In recent years Falls Creek Resort Management has partnered with Fight MND to raise funds to help find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease. Through the Ice Plunge, the resort expects to reach its initial fundraising target of $5,000 and hopes to double this figure with strong community support.

The event will be held next Saturday, June 1st at 10am at the Rocky Valley Lake Foreshore at Falls Creek. Registration is free and all participants leave with a token of their experience.

With the start of winter falling on a Saturday in this year, organisers are expecting to double the 2018 participation of 150 in what would be the biggest turnout yet. The resort is well equipped for the post-plunge chills.

Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.

Also, our local SES members will be on hand offering a fantastic BBQ breakfast to raise funds as well as some FREE hot Apple cider. There will also be lots of coffee to warm ‘plungers’ up post event around the fire-pits – which will be stoked and ready to go from around 9:30am.

The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.

“This is a great event to take part in, everybody who participates has that anxious moment beforehand but bursts out of the water with a huge smile on their face. Everybody loves getting out in dress-up, especially our own resort CEO and lift company General Manager. Another Wonderful Event

Your editor was camped out Mountain Creek Road – getting photos of the runners as they ‘gutsed it out’ up that long slow climb – which also provides great views of the runners coming towards the camera – with the magnificent autumn colours of the Kiewa Valley spread across the back of the framed image. It was here that one lady, obviously new to the area, stated as she went past “what a beautiful area!” “Thankyou” was my answer. We know it – and that is why we live here. It is also another great reason for people to visit and involve themselves in just one of the many great events that this area puts on.

Numbers this year were down a bit (180 as opposed to 262 last year) and we’re not sure whether the shift to a Sunday date had a major impact on the event. But, overall it was a great event, supported by cooler, slightly overcast conditions, with the sun breaking through the high cloud occasionally.

This Paper Goes Full-On

Twhen I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.

MR: How many national events have you raced?

here is not another resort that has the services of a paper like ‘This Week in Falls Creek!’ A bold statement – but it is true. Printed on semi-coated 90gsm stock with a page size of 312mm by 210mm it is easy to handle, carry and read. Other resorts may have a paper, but these are usually out of a newsprint factory and tend to try and cover several resorts in the one issue.

Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).

This logic is baffling. If you have made your decision to holiday in this resort, why would you want to read that there is something possibly better at the resort next door?

MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?

There is not another resort that has a group of keen eager teenagers who, each Friday, hail, rain, wind, sleet – or even in clear fine conditions, are prepared to don the backpacks and hot-foot it around the village for three or four hours into just about every lodge or apartment on the mountain. Oh sure, there’s a couple we miss, but we always leave plenty in the shops, restaurants and bars for holiday makers to pick up.

Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.

MR: How many national events have you raced?

One young bloke rang one Friday and said “It’s bucketing rain up here – can we do it Saturday?” The answer “And what happens if it’s bucketing down Saturday?” “OK, let’s get in to it."

Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer?

On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.

MR: Is this your first overseas race?

Over the years, many businesses have thought it would be a good idea to get their message out “Oh we’ll print some fliers and deliver them around.” There are over 100 sites in the village and around 500 apartments. How are you going to get your fliers around the village effectively?

Ben: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side.

Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.

MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?

MR: Do you think you’d be able to develop a career and race at the same time?

Ben: Yeah, looking at someone like Paul

Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.

Therefore, at the time this paper is being distributed around town, there will be two weeks before the first edition for winter comes out on Friday 7th June. Have a think about it and your copy should be with the editor by Friday 31st May to allow time for production, proofing and printing.

I recently went to a Probus Club gettogether and while I was expecting a pleasant social meal and a chat, what I got was so much more.

Before I went, I did my research so I know that there’s over 125,000 Probus Club members around Australia and New Zealand and they have regular social meetings and get-togethers, as well as trips and tours.

What I didn’t know was that each Club has its own collection of ‘Interest Groups’ formed by the members who contribute their own ideas and turn them into a great range of activities for anyone who chooses to join in.

Anyone can form an Interest Group, for any activity, and Probians are quick to take up the invitation to join in on the fun especially when it’s one of the things they used to enjoy previously. And members can of course belong to as many or as few Groups as they choose.

Each Probus Club has its own Interest Groups, because each and every Club is different, with a different set of members and different geography, and because of this it’s not uncommon for Clubs to join forces for a particular activity. Day trips are a favourite and can involve four or five Clubs or more depending on the destination, and these are determined by one of the Interest Groups, like museums, galleries, wineries or scenic locations off the beaten track.

Queen’s Birthday Weekend

The name White Mud Classic came from an event that Team Mount Beauty decided to run up at Falls Creek many many years ago. It was going to be in the mud – but it snowed – the event went ahead and the name stuck.

This Queen’s Birthday weekend the White Mud Classic will take place over two days, Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday is the Victorian Championships and Sunday is Round Five of the Victorian CX Series and it is expected that around 200 riders will be taking part over the weekend and we are sure to see at least five of the country’s top Elite riders taking part..

The 2.5km course is around the bottom of the Big Hill mountain bike park and will see mass starts of up to 70 riders roaring off at one time. (Should be fun!)

This form of riding is called CycloCross (CX) with the bikes being used like road bikes but with off-road tyres. Races will last around 40 to 60 minutes and provides great entertainment. The worse the weather, the better the racing – and the entertainment – as this friendly bunch of easy-going competitors just get out there to have fun! As usual there will be coffee and food

TW: “Hi Emily, where did you grow up?”

Your editor would hate to think that someone working or visiting this fabulous resort of ours ends up with a three or four thousand dollar bill for transport to hospital. It can and does happen – and it can be prevented. Read on.

Emily: “I grew up in Coolamon, NSW, and I moved to Mount Beauty about three years ago. I was working in Wagga when I met my partner Lee. Lee’s grown up here so I was visiting Mount Beauty quite a lot, and just loved it so much that half the time I didn’t want to go home (to Wagga).”

TW: “How did you get into fitness and health?”

As an example of costs, just from your editor’s experience, is like this. Thirty five years ago, the cost per hour of a simple Lama Helicopter to swing lift towers in to place was $1000 per hour – without the fuel component. To run a modern, fully equipped, fully fitted out Augusta Westland AW 139, complete with highly trained pilots and paramedics around the countryside is not a cheap exercise. Think about it!!

Emily: “Well, I went through a pretty life-changing event, it was quite personal to me, and I wanted a way to essentially heal. I wanted to meet new people, and I wanted to experience what it felt like to get stronger, both mentally and physically. So I joined a gym, and I did a challenge for six weeks where I attended boot camps, and I became so addicted to it. Heaps of great people, and the end challenge was we had to do a mud-run obstacle course.”

“Even though I wasn’t very good at it to start, I liked the process of developing a new skill to get stronger. I’ve now started Olympic weightlifting with a coach.”

TW: “What do you do when you’re not in the gym?”

“It was such a reward that I felt stronger in myself, and from that I developed a great sense of achievement that I wanted other people to feel as well.”

TW: “From that moment you knew you wanted to work in fitness?”

I ended up in an Air Ambulance to the Royal Melbourne. The trip in the air ambulance would have cost me $7,500 but I didn’t even see a bill. I could have had two lifetimes worth of cover and still been ahead.
