ell it is pretty much everything we love about riding mountain bikes – cruising with your friends and enjoying a good ride together and bombing the descents and being competitive when speeds are high.
Basically a Gravity Enduro race is conducted around a designated course that includes uphills and downhills (like any ride really), but in a Gravity Enduro you are only timed over the designated downhill segments and when you get to the bottom your time is stopped and you can ride at your own pace to the top of the next segment and then race downhill again. These time-out segments allow you to wait for your mates and compare stories and then ride on together in a friendly, social scene until it’s time to drop the hammer and race downhill again.
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.
The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.
Most of the time you need to ride uphill to the top of the next descent but some events also provide either a bus+bike shuttles or chairlift rides to the top of some segments to save you riding all the uphills – happy days! The descents vary in technicality but are generally
not as rough or technical as a proper downhill race track and if there are technical sections there is often an easier B-Line so riders of all abilities can get down fine.

and Vortex. After you’ve ridden back up to the Summit Access Rod, Stage Three is Thunderbolt. Then it is out the aqueduct to Wishing Well and Flowtown for Stage Four with a Liaison Mid Flowtown for the Flowtown Sprint (Stage Five). Then it’s up Road 24 to Big Fella (Stage Six) again and back in to the village Bowl for a finish. Not a bad little day out.

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

Now that could be interpreted in several different ways. And we do know that several of the diners did extend their lunch into the evening hours –and still made it to the Dederang Races on Saturday.
But in reality our 6th annual Regional World’s Longest Lunch got longer with a record turnout.

The Regional World’s Longest Lunch series brings together diners to sit down and partake in stunning locations all over regional Victoria and is one of the highlights of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Falls Creek has played host to this event since 2014 where 65 diners attended in this same location as 2019.
Curator and chef, Barry Iddles, said the event was a perfect move for the resort to pair with the regional food and wine offering.
Anzac Day Services are as follows. The Early Morning Service will take place in Bi-Centennial Park, Lakeside Avenue (beside the shire offices) beginning at 7am. A small informal service with a speaker from the local RSL. All welcome.
The Anzac Day March will come down Hollonds Street, starting from the assembly point in Park Street, near the Police Station at 10:45am, but marchers should be assembled and ready to go at 10:30am. Whilst Hollonds Street will not be closed, traffic movement will be restricted as the marchers come down the street.
“The resort was going to reactivate itself for summer and I thought the big Melbourne wine and food festival was quite a good way to do it and to bring in some local flavours and the picturesque lake.

Situated at 1600m above sea level, Rocky Valley Lake is one of Australia’s significant bodies of water at altitude – providing water for the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and well as enabling the resort to have a plentiful supply of water for snow-making in winter.

ount Beauty is located at the foot of Victoria’s highest mountain, Mount Bogong. Back in 1969 the local community decided to stage an event where residents and visitors could take on the climb up Bogong and back with a degree of relative safety. Marshalls were strategically placed around the course and participants were ticked off at the various checkpoints.
The event has had some wonderful highlights including record numbers of around 350 and a local lad (now grown up) who has done every one.
A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. Friends are welcome to pass this invite on and it is understood that members of Lyn’s family will be in attendance. •

There was one incident where a participant suffered a medical condition and was airlifted by helicopter off the mountain and despatched to Monash Medical Centre. Quick thinking by other participants, including a nurse who arrived on the scene shortly after he became ill, averted a tragedy, and the Lions Club of Upper Kiewa Valley thanks all who stopped to help. The man has had emergency surgery and is now recovering in Monash Medical Centre.

The My Race Results site, which lists events all over the world, lists 1539 entries for this year’s Bicycle Network and Falls Creek’s Peaks Challenge. And it is a challenge with records being broken as 1,429 cyclists completed Australia’s toughest single-day bike ride in tough and varying weather conditions around our beautiful (but changeable) Bogong High Plains on Sunday 10th March. The event saw sun, rain and wind and temperatures that felt like 4°C, as well as 24°C.
However, the tough conditions didn’t stop riders from giving their all to tackle the 235 kilometre course (with 4,000 metres of climbing) to try and finish within the 13-hour deadline and claim a coveted ‘Finishers’ jersey.
Two riders even managed to set course records, with Ben Dyball and Taryn Heather being the first male and female to cross the finish line.
Ben Dyball broke both the male record and course record, finishing in an astonishing 7 hours, 2 minutes and 57 seconds. Taryn Heather became the first female to break the 8-hour barrier, finishing in 7 hours, 50 minutes and 34 seconds.
Bicycle Network General Manager of events Rebecca Lane said it was inspiring to see riders push through the conditions and give their all to achieve their Peaks Challenge goal.
“In the 10th edition of Peaks Challenge Falls Creek we saw everything that has built the legend of this event,” said Ms Lane.
“From the changing weather conditions, camaraderie and teamwork from riders on the road and the emotion at the finish line, we saw it all.”

In a first for Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, King and Queen of the Mountain awards were given to riders who had the fastest climb times on the three peaks of Tawonga Gap, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek.

Ben Dyball doubled up on his big day out to take home $5,000 as the King of Peaks, while Madeline Wright was crowned Queen of Peaks and was also awarded $5,000.
Of those that entered, there were 11 who did not start, and there were about 109 who did not finish. Yep, it’s a big event – with still a few riders who have done every one.
As Rebecca said, thanks must also go to the many volunteers who make this event happen. Not only to our wonderful band of Bicycle Network volunteers, but also to the local volunteers from the towns in the area. For example, the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty was able to supply 33 volunteers for which Bicycle Networks contributes significantly to the club’s funds – which in turn is re-invested in this community.

Socal lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.
MR: Is this your first overseas race?

I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.
MR: How many national events have you raced?

During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all
time. It was a great testament to the focus that Team Mount Beauty members have put on developing female participation through their Spoke Sisters initiative. Congratulations to all who took part on the day and thanks to the volunteers that make it happen. •
Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide

Local mountain bikers were joined by riders from Bright, Beechworth and Albury-Wodonga as 60 racers took to two different courses in a timed decent Gravity Enduro format race.

dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool.
Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.

The course, held over the period from the 9th to the 18th March was sponsored by the Victorian Soaring Association and hosted by the Mount Beauty Gliding Club. The course was attended by five coaches and sixteen pilots and was led by international gliding coach and author, G. Dale, who spent the first three days of the course with coaches from various gliding clubs including Mount Beauty Club Pilot, Craig Collings. The following days, G. Dale and the other coaches flew with all participating pilots in varying conditions. Mount Beauty Gliding Club members Peter Demeo, Steve Bradbury and Bernie Hochwimmer were amongst the 16 pilots who participated in the coaching sessions.
Daily organisation of the event, which consisted of a morning briefing/coaching session at the West Peak Hotel followed by flying sessions with gliders being launched by aero-tow and winch launching, was overseen by VSA representative, Philip Volk and the Mount Beauty Gliding Club Chief Flying Instructor, Bernie O’Donnell and assisted by members of the Mount Beauty club. Local pilot, Tony Edwards assisted by another Mount Beauty Club member, Terry Ryan, provided aero-towing services whilst Mount Beauty club members, Greg Wilson and Al Dickie, operated the winch. Many thanks to local Mount Beauty/ Tawonga South businesses and sponsors for making the visiting glider pilots welcome, to the Victorian Soaring Association, especially Philip Volk, to G. Dale and the other coaches, and to the energetic members of the Mount Beauty Gliding Club, including Duncan Robertson, Peter Demeo, Detlev Rueff, Andrew Evans and Peter Deane, for a very successful event.
1. Buy Economical Tyres. It’s tempting to go cheap, but that can prove to be a mistake. Tests show they often increase stopping distance, have a negative effect on handling. They may also hit your fuel economy and need replacing more often.
2. Drive gently when the car is cold. Cars are at their least efficient when they are cold. If you drive hard straight from start-up, you are redoubling the wasted fuel, and also wearing out the engine more quickly in the process.
3. Empty your boot. Don’t carry unnecessary weight around with you. On average, every 50kg will increase your fuel consumption by 2%.
