After a couple weeks of keeping abreast of the developments with the Delta Variant of COVID and discussions with various staff members, including those who interact with the public regularly as well as our guests, Cape May MAC has decided to revise our mask-wearing policy as follows: In an abundance of caution for our guests and staff, as of Monday, Aug. 23, 2021, Cape May MAC requires masks be worn by all in the following indoor locations:

Step back into the Cape May of more than 100 years ago and see how the wealthy lived and played at the town’s only Victorian house museum. This Old House PRESERVATION OF THE PHYSICK ESTATE Each year, our tour of the Physick House Museum highlights a particular aspect of Victorian life and culture. In honor of Cape May MAC’s recent 50th anniversary, our tours will focus on the Physick House itself. It is fitting, since this is where Cape May MAC began, in its efforts to save the house from the wrecking ball. You will learn of the mansion’s years as a grand residence for the Physick family, to its tragic decline and near demolition and, finally, to its rise as a fully-restored historic landmark. Come join us to learn the compelling story of its life.

The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum with live reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed). You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach. Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

Makeup was considered gauche for a society woman to wear, as it was used mostly by prostitutes. One judge even proclaimed lipstick to be similar to witchcraft, in that it had the ability to seduce men. If you were a society woman, you would probably pinch your cheeks in an attempt to give yourself a glow, and you might use cold cream to appear youthful and dewy. Located at the Ocean Street end of the Washington Street Mall, the Information Booth sells tickets for any of our tours and events and provides answers to any questions you might have about what to do in Cape May. The trolley stop for our tours is located across the street from the Information Booth.

Located in the 1876 Carriage House on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. You may purchase tickets here for any tours or events. Free parking is available on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. The Carriage House is also home to the Carriage House Museum Shop, the Carroll Gallery and Vintage restaurant. The 50-year journey of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) began in 1970 when a small group of dedicated neighbors joined together to save the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate from the wrecker’s ball. Over the years, the organization’s efforts have continued, restoring and opening both the Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower. Those years also included thousands of special events and tours, all of which contributed to make Cape May MAC Cape May’s leader in heritage tourism, educational outreach, historic preservation and cultural enrichment.

It wasn’t just Queen Victoria mourning her husband—mourning was a serious business in the Victorian Era. Beautiful, elaborate mourning jewelry would be created for women in mourning, which would incorporate onyx or jet (both black stones) and braided hair from the deceased. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific.

Have an adventure at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate! Use our map to explore the grounds and find the answers to questions about the Physick family and life in Victorian times on this educational scavenger hunt. Includes map and clues.

CAPE MAY FAMILY TREASURE HUNT

Confiscate the electronic devices and get the whole family together for a fun time! Architecture is lots of fun, especially when you look at it from a kid’s perspective and set out in search of witches’ hats and fish scales. This packet includes a clues sheet and map that will take you on a self-guided discovery tour, set to your own pace (answer sheet also included). (Only one packet is needed per family). 8:30 am Beach Church: Come and worship with us in a natural sanctuary! We are just at the end of Decatur Street, a few steps onto the sand. Bring your own chair or towel to sit on; water bottle and umbrella also recommended. The service lasts about a half hour and includes traditional music and hymns. Beginning in September, Sunday school is available for children ages 4-10, from 10:15-11 am in our downstairs classroom. We teach God’s love with a snack, story, and activity! 11 am Celebration Worship: You are welcome into our beautiful and air-conditioned sanctuary, for a service known for its jazz/gospel music. Please wear a mask--we have one for you if you forget! As we head towards fall, we are collecting donations for Christmas Path of Peace. For a donation of $7, you can add a “memory light”—a Mason jar luminary that will shine on Christmas Eve and following nights to light up our corner of Cape May. Donate in memory of a loved one or in honor of someone who brightens your days! Email us for details.
