Step back in time to Christmas of more than 100 years ago...

Take a guided, daytime, living history tour of the magnificent 1879 Physick Estate, Cape May’s only Victorian house museum, decorated in authentic Victorian style for Christmas, presented through the eyes of a Physick family member in the early 1900s. Included is admission to the holiday exhibit in the Carroll Gallery, “An Old-Fashioned Christmas.” (see page 65). The first floor of the Physick house museum is fully accessible.

Before the middle of the 19th century, the kissing bough was the primary piece of decorative greenery in the Victorian home for the holidays. A kissing bough, sometimes called a kissing ball, is a double hoop of evergreen boughs, holly, ivy, apples, pears, ribbons, lighted candles, and other ornaments with streamers going up to a central point and a sprig of mistletoe hung from its center.

Victorian Christmas traditions dictate that any woman who wanders under the kissing bough has to allow herself to be kissed.

The roast turkey also has its beginnings in Victorian Britain. Previously other forms of roasted meat such as beef and goose were the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. The turkey was added to this by the more wealthy sections of the community in the 19th century, but its perfect size for a middle class family gathering meant it became the dominant dish by the beginning of the 20th century.

Victorian Christmas Traditions

Candles were an important part of Victorian Christmas traditions.

Many homes used an Advent wreath to decorate during the holidays. It was common to place lighted candles in a home’s windows during the 12 days of Christmas to signify that food and shelter was available for weary travelers. Businesspeople also frequently gave candles to their customers as gifts.

Learn about the Cherry House and its history, furnishings, renovations and artifacts, with owners Beth and Frank Acker as your guides.

Cherry House & Yuletide Cheer Tour Tuesdays & Thursdays, Dec. 2, 4, 9*, 16 & 18: 6pm-8pm Tour two historic seaside treasures in Cape May with continuous trolley shuttle transport. Board the trolley at the Ocean Street trolley stop; then visit The Cherry House, built in 1849 in the Federal style, for a selfguided tour. Next stop at the Kiwanis Club of Cape May, the most active service club in Cape May, located in the historic Cold Spring Lifesaving Station #136. Learn about the building’s and club’s rich history and enjoy holiday refreshments. Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery Tour

Fridays, Nov. 28 & Dec. 26; Saturdays, Nov. 22-Dec. 27; Daily, Dec. 28-Jan. 3: 1pm Learn how the grapes are grown and the magic that turns them into delicious wines at the Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery, 600 S. Railroad Ave, Rio Grande. Tour includes a gourmet cheese tasting on the vineyard-view crush pad. Tickets are $20 if purchased at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth or at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St.

Self-Guided Wine Trail

Daily through Jan. 3: 12Noon-5pm (not available Nov. 27, Dec. 24 & 25) Now really, is there a better way to warm up a chilly winter day?

Daily through Jan. 3: 12Noon-5pm (not available Nov. 27, Dec. 24 & 25) What’s brewing in Cape May? Some great spirits, as you’ll find out on this tour of two area wineries, Natali Vineyards and Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery, plus the new Cape May Brewing Company. Take a tour at each stop and sample some of their products. Admission is $13 and includes map with directions.

Winery Cellar Tour & Tasting

Fridays, Nov. 28 & Dec. 26; Saturdays, Nov. 22-Dec. 27; Sunday-Thursday, Dec. 28-Jan. 1: 3pm Spend an afternoon at the award-winning Cape May Winery, 711 Town Bank Rd. Tour the vineyard to see how the grapes are grown and then visit the winery where you’ll be introduced to the winemaker’s art. Savor a barrel tasting accompanied by cheese and fruit.
