A fully accessible Visitors’ Orientation Center and Museum Shop carrying souvenirs, books and maritime items are located in the Oil House

The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum withlive reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed).

You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach. Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific.

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal.

Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate.

The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps.

Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food.

Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth... through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses.

Tastes changed during the period and, by the 1860s, dishes were being placed on the sideboard and then served, one after another, by footmen. This was known as serving a meal ‘a la russe.’

Working in the coal mines

Working children were common in the Victorian era in England, largely because poor families didn’t earn enough for food without it. One job that had high demand for children was work in the coal mines. Children made excellent coal miners because they could maneuver in tight spaces, and they required far less pay than adult workers. The children would work for 12 to 18 hours in air saturated with coal dust, and there was constant danger. Other jobs included chimney sweeping (where children could start working as young as 3) and working in factories or textile mills. In 1891, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed, offering some protection to child laborers.

And, much like the current day, it was often those with the most money who had the most time to spend working on themselves. Bodybuilding was a hobby of the elite, as were fad diets and taking up new exercise trends. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion.

Fainting was common among Victorian women. Corsets made from whalebone, and sometimes even iron or steel, helped women achieve the impossibly tiny waists that were fashionable at the time. A side effect of these binding garments was that circulation would be cut off, and women would have trouble breathing. It was thought that women were prone to fainting from excitement, but really, it was that they would momentarily pass out whenever their heart rates increased as a result of having their midsections bound so tightly.

Beating the heat

Architects designed homes to maximize airflow in hopes that the occupants would be kept cool. High ceilings were not just decorative but also allowed a space for hot air to go. Coupled with large pocket windows that rose all the way into the walls above, high ceilings promoted airflow that kept air moving through each room.

Adjoining rooms were yet another way to improve air circulation. All the rooms in the living areas of the Physick House join those next to them. The only exception occurs on the third floor between a bedroom and a storage room.

A wide covered porch also helped to keep the Victorian house comfortable. As air passed under the covered porch, it was shielded enough from the sun to drop a few degrees. By the time the air passed into the house, it was much cooler than the air outside. Shutters and shades were also employed to keep the house cool. Louvered shutters, like we find on the Physick House, allowed air to pass through but kept out the heat of the sun. Often, shutters and shades were opened and closed throughout the day as the sun moved around the house. Many a maid was probably kept busy as she traveled from room to room adjusting the shutters to keep out the sun.
