Youngsters will see what life was like more than 100 years ago on a tour of this 1879 house museum (see page 6), geared especially for 5-10 year-olds. Find out how kids (and adults) lived without electricity and many of the everyday things we take for granted today. Tours last about 30 minutes. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Sorry, we can’t accommodate strollers.

Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

One of Shakespeare’s earliest and most vibrant comedies, “Comedy of Errors,” is a zany, madcap romp of mistaken identities. Take two pairs of identical twins, a jealous wife and her love-struck sister, a greedy merchant, a father whose head will be chopped off at sunset, a dim-witted courtesan, a stolen necklace, one angry nun, a greasy kitchen wench and an exorcist. Add in Shakespeare’s brilliant, sparkling language, spiced up with musical surprises, and the result is a concoction of delightful lunacy and farcical delirium.

Bucket brigade

The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order.

Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century.

Guardian of the shore Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles.

Built in 1942, the World War II Lookout Tower was one of 15 towers that helped aim batteries of coastal artillery, stretching from North Wildwood, N.J. to Bethany Beach, DE. Four were in Cape May County —the towers located in North Wildwood

and Wildwood Crest were torn down and a third tower is located inside Cape May’s Grand Hotel on BeachAvenues.

The World War II Lookout Tower is on land now owned by Cape May Point State Park and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 17, 2003. The tower underwent major restoration by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). The Tower is now open to visitors daily. (see page 8) 39

Beating the heat Architects in Dr. Physick’s day designed homes to maximize airflow in hopes that the occupants would be kept cool in the summertime. High ceilings were not just decorative but also allowed a space for hot air to go. As the hot air rose, people on the floor stayed cooler. Coupled with large “pocket” windows that rose all the way into the walls above, high ceilings promoted airflow that kept air moving through each room.

Adjoining rooms were yet another way to improve air circulation. All the rooms in the living areas of the Physick House join those next to them. The only exception occurs on the third floor between a bedroom and a storage room.

Maybe the architect thought that making this storage room connect with

the one next door was pointless since it would have been shut up most of the time.

A wide, covered porch also helped to keep the Victorian house comfortable.

As air passed under the covered porch, it was shielded enough from the sun to drop a few degrees. By the time the air passed into the house, it was much cooler than the air outside. Shutters and shades were also employed to keep the house cool. Louvered shutters, like we find on the Physick House, allowed air to pass through but kept out the heat of the sun.

Often, shutters and shades were opened and closed throughout the day as the sun moved around the house. Many a maid was probably kept busy as she traveled from room to room adjusting the shutters to keep out the sun.

What’s for dinner?

Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate.

The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps.

Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food.

Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth... through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses.

Tastes changed during the period and, by the 1860s, dishes were being placed on the sideboard and then served, one after another, by footmen. This was known as serving a meal ‘a la russe.’

Take the kids to The Keeper’s on Duty on Sundays at 11 a.m. and Lighthouse Storytime on Sundays at 12Noon in the Education Center in Cape May Point State Park. Free admission. Pg. 57

Make it a family tradition to climb this working Lighthouse. It’s 199 steps to the top, but worth it for the breathtaking view of the Jersey Cape (and just to say you did it!) Pg. 9

LIGHTHOUSE LORE

No visit to Cape May is complete without a visit to the Emlen Physick Estate on Washington Street. This 1879 restored mansion is Cape May’s only Victorian house museum, and tours of the estate can be combined with trolley tours of the city, as well. Step back into the past on a tour of this marvelous mansion, or combine a visit with a trolley tour of the Historic District for a total Cape May experience. Pgs. 6 & 7
