Explore the two floors of the 1879 Physick House Museum on your own and linger in the rooms that intrigue you, on this self‐guided tour experience. Photos welcome. Interpretive displays tell you about important features in each room. A costumed interpreter is available for questions. Tour also included admission to the “Capturing Cape May’s Architecture” in the Carriage House’s Carroll Gallery (see page 33). Last ticket sold at 3:15pm; last admission is at 3:30pm; the museum closes promptly at 4:15pm.

Located in Cape May Point State Park Lighthouse Avenue, off Sunset Boulevard

Open daily: See calendar for times Climb 199 steps in this 1859 structure to the watch gallery (just below the lantern itself) for a panoramic view of the Jersey Cape & Delaware Bay! The state park offers a Hawk Watch platform and nature trails, as well as a museum with live reptiles and nature displays, and there are covered pavilions and access to the beach (swimming is not allowed). You can also see the World War II bunker on the beach.

Rest rooms are available in the park and there is ample free parking.

Then hop aboard the trolley again for a short ride to the Cape May Lighthouse, where you’ll enjoy an exclusive night climb to see the shoreline and waters of the ocean and bay beneath the light of the full moon. At the conclusion of your climb, the trolley will return you to the Mall.

Capturing Cape May’s Architecture: The Making of a National Historic Landmark Open daily through Oct. 31: See calendar for times • FREE ADMISSION In the early ’70s, a team from the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) produced pen and ink drawings of this seaside town’s most significant historic structures. The drawings enabled Cape May to become a National Historic Landmark and a national tourist destination. Now, for the first time, these intricate drawings and the stories of the architects whose hands created them are on exhibit at the Carroll Gallery. Curator Karen Fox, author of “The Chalfonte,” provides visitors with a unique look at how a small band of preservationists saved not only the buildings, but a culture of the past creating a future. So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors.

Hear why the legendary Harriet Tubman walked these streets before her freedom runs to the Eastern Shore. See the summer refuge of the formerly enslaved Stephen Smith, one of America’s wealthiest businessmen whose railroad cars ferried hundreds to freedom. Includes a tour of the Owen Coachman house, a meticulously restored antebellum home of a free Black family whose relative was kidnapped and sold into slavery.
