Step back into the Cape May of more than 100 years ago and see how the wealthy lived and played at the town’s only Victorian house museum. Also visit the Estate’s Carriage House to see the “Tommy’s Folly” exhibit in the Carroll Gallery through Oct. 10. (see page 49). The first floor of the Physick House museum is fully accessible.

Guided Physick Estate Tours take approximately 45 minutes and conclude with the Tommy’s Folly exhibit in the Carriage House’s Carroll Gallery. (see page 49). The first floor of the house museum is fully accessible.

This experience allows you to spend as much time as you like, and linger at will, in the museum rooms where interpretive staff and volunteers will be available answer your questions and discuss Victorian life. In addition, expect to New tomeet a “historic” member of the Physick family, or one of their domestic in staff, as you wander through Dr. Physick’s home. Tour also included ad2016! mission to the current exhibit in the Carriage House’s Carroll Gallery (see page 49). Last admission is at 3:45pm; the museum closes at 4:15pm.

Youngsters will see what life was like more than 100 years ago on a tour of this 1879 house museum (see page 6), geared especially for 5-10 year-olds. Find out how kids (and adults) lived without electricity and many of the everyday things we take for granted today. Tours last about 30 minutes. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Sorry, we can’t accommodate strollers.

Until late in the century in 1887 a married woman could own no property. Then in 1887 the Married Woman’s Property Act gave women rights to own her own property. Previously her property, frequently inherited from her family, belonged to her husband on marriage. She became the chattel of the man. During this era if a wife separated from her husband she had no rights of access to see her children. A divorced woman had no chance of acceptance in society again.

Swat that mosquito!

Before window screens, summertime must have been a horrendous experience. Open windows did allow the air to flow through the house but also left the occupants of the house open to attack from every gnat, mosquito, and no-see-um on the planet. Window screens solved that problem. Machine-made wire screening was available in the United States by the 1870s. As the benefits of wire screening became evident, manufacturers turned out patented screens of every design. There were expandable screens, hinged screens, sliding screens, and spring framed screens. These screens were available in numerous types of wood including rosewood, mahogany, and pine. Here at the Physick House, the family opted for sliding screens. If you look at the window screens carefully, you’ll see that they can be slid up and down on a wooden track, which holds the screen close to the open window. Sliding screens meant that the maid could simply slide the screen out of the way as she adjusted the exterior shutter to block the hot sunlight from entering the house.

Beating the heat Victorian Architects designed homes to maximize airflow in hopes that the occupants would be kept cool. High ceilings were not just decorative but also allowed a space for hot air to go. Coupled with large pocket windows that rose all the way into the walls above, high ceilings promoted airflow that kept air moving through each room. Adjoining rooms were yet another way to improve air circulation, as you’ll see in the Physick House. A wide covered porch also helped to keep the Victorian house comfortable. As air passed under the covered porch, it was shielded enough from the sun to drop a few degrees. By the time the air passed into the house, it was much cooler than the air outside. Shutters and shades were also employed to keep the house cool. Louvered shutters, like we find on the Physick House, allowed air to pass through but kept out the heat of the sun. Often, shutters and shades were opened and closed throughout the day as the sun moved around the house.

Many a maid was probably kept busy as she traveled from room to room adjusting the shutters to keep out the sun.

Those playful Victorians!

Victorians liked toys with long names, like phenakistoscope! This was a spinning-picture toy. It made it seem you were looking at moving pictures. Old pictures make them look really serious, but Victorians also liked silly rhymes, like the nonsense verses of Edward Lear, who wrote The Owl and the Pussycat.

What’s for dinner?

Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate. The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps. Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food. Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth. This was done through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. At the start of the period, French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses.
