The Red House

Ximending

A Cultural Landmark for Unique Handcrafted Gifts in Taipei

In the vibrant Ximending district, the Red House stands as one of Taipei’s most iconic historic landmarks. Built in 1908 during the Japanese colonial period, it was Taiwan’s first modern public market and remains as one of the country’s best-preserved heritage sites. Designed by Japanese architect Kondo Juro, the Red House features a unique octagonal structure with a cruciform layout, blending Western architectural influences with local design. This innovative design marked it as a standout building of its time.

Over the years, the Red House has served various purposes, from a public market to a bookstore, cinema, and theater. Since 2007, the Taipei Culture Foundation has managed the site, transforming it into a vibrant hub for Taiwan's Cultural and Creative Industries.

Today, it is one of the cornerstones of Taipei’s creative scene in the city. The Red House aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations in 2015, helping to preserve Taiwan’s cultural heritage while supporting sustainable tourism. It remains a symbol of how history and modernity can coexist, continuing to serve the community with energy and vibrancy. As you step inside, you’ll find a cozy café corner where you can relax with a pastry and a cup of coffee in a comfortable, well-maintained environment. The venue also boasts an allgender bathroom, highlighting its commitment to inclusivity and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.

Currently, the interior houses handicraft boutiques, a café, and a historical display showcasing the building’s rich history. It's the perfect spot to discover local arts & crafts and pick up unique souvenirs. Some must-have items include candles shaped like xiaolunpao (Taiwanese soup buns), canvas bags featuring Taiwanese prints, and adorable Formosan black bear figurines. Purchasing these unique creations by local artists not only supports their craftsmanship but also promotes sustainable tourism and contributes to the circular economy by encouraging local production, reducing waste, and supporting eco-friendly practices.

In the evening, the plaza outside comes alive with a bustling street filled with bars and restaurants offering live music, drinks, and occasional pop-up events or exhibitions, blending the area’s historical charm with modern-day entertainment.

The Red House is a prime example of how historic buildings can be reimagined for modern use while preserving their cultural significance. Its blend of heritage architecture, local creativity, and independent retail shops make it a must-visit destination in Taipei. The territory comprises the main island of Taiwan and the outlying islands of Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu. The country is usually known to the world simply as "Taiwan". The island has a complex geology and topography, with mountains, streams, canyons, hills, basins, plains, tableland, and coastlines. Located at the Tropic of Cancer, with many mountains reaching close to 4,000m, it features tropical, subtropical and temperate vegetation and ecology, creating a beautiful natural landscape. Taroko National Park 太魯閣國家公園 Taroko National Park has my vote as the most stunning of Taiwan’s National parks. The park is located on the east coast of Taiwan. It lies across 3 administrative areas, Hualien County, Taichung City and Nantou County. Taroko Gorge has my vote as the most beautiful place in all of Taiwan. You can arrange for guided tours at the Visitor Center. Taroko Gorge is famous for its spectacular mountains and marble canyons. Its canyons and cliffs, some of which are 100 meters high https://www.toroko. gov.tw

stretch along the Liwu River. You will marvel at the sights while hiking one of many accessible local trails, The Lushui Trail ( 綠 水 步 道 ), or the Shakadang Trail ( 砂 卡 噹 步 道 ) along the clear waters of the Shakadang Stream.

South Penghu Marine National Park 澎湖南方四島國家公園 The South Penghu Marine National Park ( 澎 湖 南 方 四 島 國 家 公 園 ) is Taiwan’s ninth national park and the second marine national park. The Park was established in 2014. The South Penghu Marine National Park consists of four main islands: Dongjiyu ( 東 吉 嶼 ), Xijiyu ( 西 吉 嶼 ), Donyupingyu ( 東 嶼 坪 嶼 ), Xiyupingyu ( 西嶼坪嶼 ), and nine surrounding islets.
