7. Browse Through the Galway Markets Every weekend, St. Nicholas’ Church Lane is filled with the hustle and bustle of shoppers browsing through the various stalls. From curry and crepes to crafts and ceramics, you can spend hours visiting the different vendors. Do yourself a favour and get yourself a Boychik donut.

8. Feed the Swans at the Claddagh If you’re packing a picnic to enjoy in the sun, you may as well throw in some seeds to feed your swan chums. You’re guests in their house, after all.

9. Take a Sail on a Galway Hooker Boat Experience the customs and traditions of Connemara in the most authentic way possible; aboard a Galway Hooker. Embrace the atmosphere of today while becoming spellbound by the nature of the past.

11. Get Some Dough Bros All Over Your Face Dough Bros have grown rapidly over the last few years. From their street food truck to a much-loved restaurant in the heart of the city, they have even been voted as one of the very best pizza takeaways in Europe! Joining the queue for some worldclass pizza and a home-brewed beer is essential when passing through Galway.

10. Admire the Skyline Created by the Cathedral Dating back to 1958, the Cathedral is one of the most impressive looking buildings in the city. The dome is visible from miles away, creating an incredible skyline and the interior is even better.

12. A Bag of Chips from McDonaghs Established in 1902, McDonagh’s fish and chips have been making mouths drool for generations. A vinegar-soaked bag of chips enjoyed out in the sun creates a utopia like no other. Just be prepared to fend off some brave pigeons who are desperate for a taste.

13. Sample the Gins at Tigh Nora Galway’s first bar devoted to gin is a must for lovers of a G+T. Their selection is gigantic, stocking local brands as well as gins from all over the globe. Throw in some tasty tonics and some floating fruit and you’re sorted.

14. Catch a Performance

by Macnas This very special group of performers stage unforgettable spectacles in diverse and unexpected locations. Their creative and incredibly unique displays feature audience interaction, world-class theatrics and insane visuals. You’ll be left speechless.

15. Get Screamed at By a Seagull If you’re trying to enjoy a chicken fillet roll in the great outdoors, prepare for some confrontation. Galway’s seagulls like to engage in spirited debates as to why you owe them your crumbs.

16. Get Some Ink at A.W.O.L If you want to commemorate your time in Gaillimh with a bit of ink, A.W.O.L Tattoos and Piercing is the place. This family-run studio has some seriously sound professionals to ensure your tat is just how you want it.

17. Indulge in the Finest irish Cheese at McCambridges McCambridge’s supply some of the very best Irish and International produce around and their Irish cheese selection is to die for. You can also put together a custom hamper of some delicious bits unique to you.

18. Head Out to the Aran Islands The incredibly authentic Irish experience provided by the Aran Islands is something truly special. Surrounded by native Irish speakers, saints and scholars, you’ll have plenty to see and do.

19. Eat a Boojum and Drink a Can at the Spanish Arch Once the temperature rises above 10 degrees, you best believe Spanish Arch will be filled with can-drinkers and boojum-eaters alike. Join them.

20. Wander the Grounds of NUI Galway From the Quadrangle to Concourse, the university’s beautiful buildings are worth a visit. Wading between weary students will make you glad 9 am lectures are a distant memory.

WEEKEND ACTIVITIES WITH THE TEENS It can be hard to keep teenagers entertained so, for the more adventurous families, here are a few exciting ways to spend more time together.

Zoom around the track or some competitive paintball at Pallas Karting should definitely be on the cards. Equally intense Tom O’Hawks axe throwing is high energy and a great stress reliever. Alternatively, Great Escape Rooms have three rooms for you to escape from within an hour, so that’ll put your team work skills to the test. For something a little more laid back, Pálás regularly screen cinematic classics on the big screen!

GOOD TIMES FOR THE GROWN UPS Whether your kids are all grown up or you’re getting away for the day with some family friends, you’ll be well entertained in Galway.

Spin out as far as the Spiddal Craft Village to spend an afternoon browsing through the breath-taking work of glass crafters, basketmakers, jewelers and photographers in this colourful little slice of heaven. If you fancy lacing up your runners, the 2957 hectares of Connemara National Park are just waiting to be explored.

There really isn’t anything better than Galway on a sunny day, so you better make the most of it! Here’s our guide to the best sandy beaches, atmospheric beer gardens, al fresco dining spots and places to get that much needed iced coffee while you’re in Galway.

Galway’s Best Beaches Whether it’s the feeling of sand underfoot or the seabreeze on your cheek, nothing compares to the sights, sounds and smells that fill up your senses when wandering along the shore. Here are some of our very favourite spots to get your feet wet…

Dog’s Bay & Gurteen Bay Almost an hour and a half’s spin from the city, on the road to Clifden, these back-to-back beaches are some of the finest in Ireland. Forming a tombolo extending out into the Atlantic Ocean, we would recommend heading out here if you’re in the mood for a swim or a long walk. Just a couple of miles from Roundstone, Dog’s Bay’s unique horseshoe shape and white sand made from seashells make it effortlessly appealing, while the crystal clear waters attract windsurfers and kite surfers alike.

Spiddal Beach Flanked by rocky outcrops, this 200 meter sandy beach offers a fantastic destination for swimmers, as it allows you to gradually get into your depth and feel comfortable and safe as you float along. Positioned on the roadside as you enter Spiddal village, you’re in a great spot to spend a summer’s day soaking up the relaxing energy of the area.

Whether you’re with your mates or spending the afternoon flipping through a good book, the sights and sounds of Spiddal Beach offer a perfect setting to let the hours slip by.

Renvyle Beach This scenic sandy beach is known for its fantastic caravan and camping park that overlooks the Twelve Bens mountain range out in Connemara. It’s tempting to spend the whole weekend lapping up the peaceful retreat offered by this entire area. When the sky is clear, the views offered by the beach stretch right across to the mountains of Clare and the island of Inishturk. The impeccable condition of the beach is a credit to the community and even received the Green Coast Award Beaches 2013, making its unspoilt beauty a symbol of environmental excellence.

Kilmurvey Beach Located on Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran Islands, Kilmurvey Beach offers a stunning setting for a seaside picnic, a family day out or a romantic stroll against the backdrop of white sand and blue skies. Since there are no strong currents or tides, the water is ideal for swimming and - if you’re lucky - this beach is a great place to work on your tan. Many’s the memory have been made while wandering along Kilmurvey Beach, so snap some photos and embrace the salty sea air.

When wandering along the prom, it’s impossible to miss this vibrant red meetingplace. Bringing the spirit of their Forster Street café to this seaside location, Jungle Beach Break serves up tasty treats and an amazing atmosphere that has to be felt to be truly appreciated.

Transforming a humble coffee kiosk into a tropical paradise, Jungle Beach Break is now in its sixth year of keeping the people of Salthill village and beyond incredibly happy with their warming soups, refreshing smoothies and top notch coffee. Moving to the rhythm of reggae, the crew have created a very special spot that the community won’t be letting go of any time soon.

Whether you just want to immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature or you fancy getting your blood pumping, there are plenty of unforgettable experiences just waiting to be embraced…

kayak on the corrib There’s no better way to spend a summer’s day than paddling through the water and lapping up the sunshine. Whether it’s to improve your fitness, plunge into nature or just for a bitta craic, Kayakmór will allow you to experience the untamed coastal waters of the West with their guided tours around the Corrib.

a tour of aillwee cave If you want to venture a little further afield for some family fun, a trip to the Aillwee Cave is always a winner.

Take a 30-minute guided tour of the underworld in one of Ireland’s oldest caves, gaze up at the flying displays at the Burren Birds of Prey Centre and wander through the on-site hazel woodland. Don’t forget to visit their artisan farm shop while you’re there!
