A Growing Convention City Cleveland’s multi-billion-dollar makeover continues, much within walking distance of 5,000 hotel rooms and the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland.

Meeting Facility Updates Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland: As part of a $49 million investment, Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland is expanding. The project is expected to enhance the complex through more top-of-the-line technology and additional large, flexible meeting spaces that will provide significant natural light.

Infrastructure improvements, including new escalators, stairs and restrooms will support increased foot traffic. The Atrium ballroom also will undergo an expansion to 20,000 square feet, doubling in size to serve as one large meeting space or be divided into multiple rooms. A new, private 11,000-square-foot rooftop

terrace also will be available to groups and for social events. In addition, several former meetings rooms will be converted into luxury suites for clients in which to entertain, according to Travis Poppell, director of sales and marketing for the Convention Center. Changes are expected to be complete by June 2024. “Since the center opened in 2013, it has had a measurable economic impact of $1 billion — representing money brought into Cleveland from outsiders,” says Destination Cleveland President and CEO David Gilbert. “This investment indicates that Cleveland is serious about growing its tourism industry and enhancing the community’s popularity and reputation as a host of meetings and conventions.”

Hotel Developments Hotel Cleveland: More than $90 million in renovations are underway to transform all meeting spaces and 491 hotel rooms, as well as the lobby and restaurant space of the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel, which is being rebranded as Hotel Cleveland and which will become part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection in 2024. will be placed on the building’s roof, similar in design to the sign that was in the same place on the original Hotel Cleveland in 1918.

Fidelity Hotel: This 97-room boutique hotel with a board room and 1,660-square-foot ballroom will add a throwback feel to the Gilded Age. Its speakeasy-style bar will no doubt be popular. Constuction on the project is expected to continue through the end of 2024.

W Hotel: Plans are underway to bring Ohio’s first W Hotel to the 40-story Erieview Tower. Features include 210 rooms, rooftop restaurant, ballroom, full-service spa and gym. A 2025 opening date is planned.

Just outside of Downtown Cleveland, plans for additional hotels also are underway, including: Bridgeworks: Plans for a mixeduse development project along the West Superior Viaduct in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood call for a 132-room Motto by Hilton hotel with a 120-seat restaurant and bar on the building’s 7th floor.

Downtown Cleveland on the Rise Sherwin-Williams Headquarters: The Cleveland Fortune 500 giant is painting a bright future with its new 36-story, 616-foot glass-sheathed global headquarters adjacent to Public Square. The new facility will house 4,000 employees by the end of 2024. Also, a new 600,000-square-foot R&D facility in suburban Brecksville is expected to add 400 jobs upon its launch in 2024.

Progressive Field Renovation: The three-year, $202 million fan-facing renovation of the Cleveland Guardians ballpark began in 2023 and will emphasize social experiences. The transformation includes a revamped Upper Deck, Terrace Club and Dugout Club. The current Terrace Club will become an open-air hub with ticketed seating at the 200 and 300 levels. Social spaces will be available on the upper deck. The new Dugout Club will provide a VIP experience. By Opening Day 2025, we should be able to see all the changes and say “Play ball!”

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Expansion: The planned $135 million expansion will add 50,000 square feet of new exhibition and event space, as well as a new band shell overlooking Lake Erie that will crank up the volume for concerts and performances. The black steel and granite addition will include a new lobby entry and public space, a 1,350-person

event venue and an acoustically designed performance area. In addition, the ADA-compliant outdoor greenspace will be altered to be more user-friendly for everyone. Look for completion in 2025.

Cuyahoga Riverfront: Talk about transformational. When the expansion of Tower City Center’s riverfront project envisioned by Bedrock (a real estate, city builder and place maker) sees light, downtown will be forever changed.

The $3.5 billion project will provide “accessibility, equity, sustainability, resiliency and connectivity” to Downtown Cleveland, according to Bedrock. In the plan: 35 million square feet of new development and adaptive reuse and 35 acres of public and private land. That includes 850,000 square feet of office space, 2,000 residential units and 12 plus acres of public space.

Lakefront Development: Cruise ships have discovered how much fun Cleveland can be and seasonal stops at the city’s port increased to almost 50 in 2023. A new cruise ship terminal at the end of West 3rd Street is just one idea proposed by the City of Cleveland’s updated lakefront vision and around a proposed renovation of Cleveland Browns Stadium. Also on the table: the North Coast Connector, a $200 million land bridge linking Downtown’s outdoor malls with the shore of Lake Erie; and public spaces north of the football stadium and more green areas.

Downtown Residential Projects From 2010 to 2020, Downtown saw a 31% population increase, and an expected 30,000 residents will call Downtown home by 2030 with continued development. One estimate predicts about 3,000 new residential units could open by 2027.

City Club Apartments: Rising 23 stories above lower Euclid Avenue, the new $92.5 million development will feature 304 apartments. Dining and drinks are steps away from residents’ doors. That includes Café Tartine, J’adore, a two-level French restaurant and an underground speakeasy called L’Ecrin Vert. The rooftop Sky Club features a top-level pool, weekend full-service bar and light lunch.

Residences at 55 Public Square is a brand-new luxury apartment community that offers incredible views of Downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie. Fahrenheit Cleveland is also part of the $85 million worth of development and renovations at 55 Public Square. Owned and operated by nationally famous Chef Rocco Whalen, the new restaurant features contemporary American and continental cuisines with an Asian whisper.

45 Erieview: This 16-story high-rise will become Cleveland’s first remotework property, with a $102 million conversion from offices to 367 luxury apartments and lower-level co-working spaces. The “good stuff” includes retail, dining and a 15th floor outdoor pool and deck.

Erieview Tower: The $100 million redevelopment of the 40-story Erieview Tower includes 300,000 square feet of renovated office space and 227 apartments managed by W Residences. Possibilities point to a rooftop bar, restaurant and spa.

6% Neighborhood Growth Driven by Clevland Clinic growth and new jobs in the Opportunity Corridor, nearby neighborhoods on Cleveland’s East Side are experiencing new residential development.

Hough: There are 780 apartment units are under construction or planned along Chester Ave. in the Hough neighborhood including Adis View apartments, The Lumas, Charter 75 and Chester 82. The new, $28 million headquarters of The Cleveland Foundation in Hough was completed in 2023 with its goal to be more welcoming to all of Cleveland.

Fairfax: Fairfax Market is a $57 million development at the corner of E. 105th St. and Cedar Ave. This major project will transform the neighborhood and includes a 40,000-square-foot Meijer grocery store and 196 apartment units.

Developers hope to have work completed by late 2023.

University Circle: The 11-story Library Lofts include 207 apartments over a new, larger Martin Luther King Jr. Branch Library. In addition, a newly proposed development across the street from Case Western Reserve’s Nobby Ballpark calls for a 24-unit multi-family development.

Additional City Developments Cleveland Clinic: The world-renown health leader plans $1.3 billion worth of capital projects. That includes the 1 millionsquare-foot Neurological Institute to be built on its main campus. The renovation and expansion of the Cole Eye Institute will include construction of a four-story, 150,000-square-foot expansion with additional operating and procedure rooms.

Longer term plans include the addition of a 400,000-square-foot research space called the Center for Infectious Diseases (CID).

Opportunity Corridor: As the name implies, this area of Cleveland is living up to its name with the arrival of Canon Healthcare USA, a medical imaging facility that brings another couple hundred jobs to the city. Japanese tech behemoth Canon Inc., is investing $430 million into a burgeoning Cleveland development site bursting with quality jobs and innovative businesses. In addition, Federal Equipment Co., plans to invest $2.5 million on expanded office space already in the corridor. On the corridor’s eastern end, plans are to bring mixed-income apartments and singlefamily homes to Innovation Square.

Aer Lingus: Cleveland Hopkins International Airport welcomed its first direct international flights to/from Dublin, Ireland in May of 2023, opening up travel overseas to Cleveland.

Studio West 117: A hub of the LGBTQ+ community, this complex features a performance space, dance studio, bar, concept club, health clinic, 140 apartments and the FieldHouse

for sports, as well as dining and retail options. Investment has grown to seven properties totaling $115 to $125 million and is scheduled for completion in 2025.

West Side Market: The 110-year-old market’s plan is a $44 million renovation with improved vendor stalls, the introduction of alcohol sales, commercial kitchens where vendors prepare food onsite and a prepared food hall.

CentroVilla25: This $12 million warehouse/office building conversion plus a 12,000 square-foot expansion is a Latinx/Hispanic cultural center, shopping, dining and entrepreneurship opportunity.

The eagerly anticipated center will open fall of 2024 and is located in La Villa Hispana, part of Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood. It will feature 20 kioskstyle retail spaces, commercial kitchen, restaurant, grocery store, office space an outdoor plaza.

Health-Tech/High-Tech Industries Building on a manufacturing heritage, world-class health care community and vibrant entrepreneurial culture, Cleveland is a rich hub for innovation.

Cleveland’s 21st-century economic and employment environment builds on the city’s rich industrial and entrepreneurial heritage. It’s now the 15th largest U.S. economic region with $238 billion in gross regional product. There are 109,000 diverse companies, many of which have a health-tech or high-tech focus.

Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network (MAGNET) helps manufacturers in Northeast Ohio grow their business operations, workforces and startups. The 38-year-old nonprofit celebrated the completion of its new 53,000-squarefoot headquarters in the renovated Margaret Ireland Elementary School in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood.

Talent Attraction Recognizing the importance of positioning the Cleveland region as a high-performing, growing and diverse metropolitan area, The Cleveland Talent Alliance, a consortium of public, private and nonprofit organizations established a goal of attracting new talent in the growth sectors of IT/technology (including financial services), health care and smart manufacturing.

Technology Recently ranked No. 2 in the country with a 19.9% inflow of tech workers, it’s easy to see why Cleveland is quickly becoming a hub for innovation and technology.

Signs within the convention center contain Braille text as well as raised characters for visually impaired visitors.
