Clevelander Tips I n Cleveland, “soda” is referred to as “pop.” If you hear “Burning River” or “Holy Moses,” it’s just someone ordering a craft beer made locally by Great Lakes Brewing Company. Many Clevelanders identify themselves as being either eastsiders or westsiders (the division being the Cuyahoga River), but all seem to claim downtown.

On game day, hit up Caesar’s Sportsbook at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse or Bally’s Interactive Lounge at FirstEnergy Stadium to lay down a little action in between plays. May the odds be ever in your favor!

The Land is teeming with new construction and renovations. The circa-1918 Renaissance Cleveland Hotel is poised for a $62 million transformation into Hotel Cleveland (a nod to the hotel’s original name). Along with that project, the Marriott chain is also making plans to build Ohio’s first W Hotel inside the 40-story Erieview Tower near the Rock Hall. Not to be outdone, Hilton has various projects in development—including the 130-room Motto by Hilton inside Ohio City’s ambitious Bridgeworks community and a 170room Curio Collection by Hilton within the former Union Trust Bank space (soon to become a mixeduse mecca known as The Centennial). And old souls, take note: the Baker Building is being converted into the 97-room Fidelity Hotel with a throwback feel to the Gilded Age (not to mention an on-site restaurant and speakeasy).

SOLAR STUNNER

Cleveland’s got big plans for the total solar eclipse in 2024.

BY KEVIN CARPENTER

PATH OF TOTALITY

SOLARFEST + TOTAL ON THE OVAL

Mark your calendars now for 3:13 p.m. on April 8, 2024—when we get a front-row seat to a celestial stunner. Cleveland sits along the path of totality for that day’s solar eclipse, meaning nearly four minutes of mid-afternoon darkness as the moon blocks the face of the sun. (Not to brag or anything, but that’s one of the longest durations of any major city.)

Another can’t-miss stop is the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s eclipse bash on University Circle. Over the weekend, CMNH plans to host “SolarFest: Eclipse Family Fun Days” with special programs and activities for sky-gazers of all ages. On Monday, it’s time for the main event: the “Total on the Oval” watch party. (How ‘bout this for FOMO? We won’t be back in an eclipse’s path of totality until 2444.)

TOTAL ECLIPSE FESTIVAL GUARDIANS HOME OPENER

Amidst all this eclipse excitement, the Cleveland Guardians also play their home opener — against the Chicago White Sox—on April 8. While the start time is still TBD, the eclipse will likely arrive sometime during pre-game festivities or the game itself. The Guards promise to embrace the moment, so stay tuned for details. We’ve never been so excited to see Progressive Field go dark.

RENAISSANCE Ambitious housing developments are springing up in Downtown Cleveland

BY VINCE GUERRIERI

Downtown Cleveland is one of the area’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. Significant renovations are slated for Erieview Tower, which is set to reopen as part of Marriott’s W brand with hotel and event space, offices and apartments. (The modernist skyscraper is designed by I.M. Pei, much like the nearby Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.) 45 Erieview is also in the works, converting the 16-story former Ohio Bell headquarters into a luxurious live-work community with lake views. Adjacent to Sherwin-Williams’ new headquarters, 55 Public Square will house chef Rocco Whalen’s fully-reimagined Fahrenheit. Nearby, the City Club Tower is rising above Euclid Avenue as a 23-story apartment complex.

BY DOUGLAS J. GUTH MIDTOWN

Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network’s (MAGNET) tech-heavy innovation center unites Downtown Cleveland’s drive with Midtown’s creativity. Cleveland Foundation’s HQ also finds a home in Midtown, making this neighborhood a vital hub for business and ingenuity. Innovation Square is set to bring jobs and new residents to Fairfax’s Opportunity Corridor. A centerpiece Meijer grocery store will be boosted by 700–800 market-rate housing units, bringing even more diversity into this historic area. HOUGH

Prolific regional job growth is spurring new housing in Hough to the tune of approximately 800 new market-rate apartments. It’s all part of the vision for creating a walkable, bike-friendly “15-minute city” primed for public transportation.

* Did You Know?

Cleveland landed the #2 spot on Zillow’s list of hot housing markets in 2023, thanks to “high market velocity and job growth.”

Big developments center Cleveland as a world-class city for development.

BY DOUGLAS J. GUTH

aven’t you heard? A series of projects is cementing Northeast Ohio as an invigorating epicenter for development. Cleveland giant Sherwin-Williams is painting a bright future Downtown with a new global headquarters. The 36-story tower will utilize the “square point” aspects of neighboring buildings while making its own mark on the city skyline. The glass-sheathed HQ—along with a 600,000-square-foot R&D facility in Brecksville—is slated to add 400 jobs to the region. Meanwhile, the Opportunity Corridor is living up to its name with the arrival of Canon Healthcare USA, a medical imaging facility projected to bring another couple hundred jobs to the city.

Japan tech behemoth Canon Inc. is investing $300 million into a burgeoning Cleveland development site already bursting with quality jobs and innovative businesses. (Yep, the same people who make cameras!) Not to be outdone is the Cleveland Clinic, which recently announced $1.3 billion in capital projects (including a forthcoming Neurological Institute on its main campus). An expanded Cole Eye Institute and a new 400,000-square-foot pathogen research space are also on the way for the world-renowned health provider, helping to solidify Cleveland as a trailblazer city. CUYAHOGA COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Double majoring in science and humanities? A recent $2 million “Experimental Humanities” pledge will help make that easier.

Flex your problemsolving skills, build your own lab equipment and collaborate with the community on projects.

In-person classes not your thing? Their online MBA ranks among the nation’s best in 2023.

Two-year colleges are just as valuable, and Tri-C’s four local campuses prove that—with plenty of degree options.

The First Residents of the North Coast

AJ BY A CH HANN RIS A T OP H & JOH NS HER TON

Long before General Moses Cleaveland found his way to the banks of the Cuyahoga River in the 1790s, Indigenous peoples thrived in Ohio and especially enjoyed summering in Cleveland by the Cuyahoga. Agricultural towns were fortified with earthen walls and complex mounds that were mostly, unfortunately, destroyed by the 1800s. After frontier wars and forced relocation decimated the population, only a handful of American Indians remained in Cleveland. New York-transplant and businessman Chief Thunderwater created the Supreme Council of Indian Nations (a restoration of the Iroquois

Confederacy) in the 1930s. About 30 years later, Russell Means of the Lakota founded the Cleveland American Indian Center to offer job assistance and preserve American Indian identity. By the 1970s, Means had become an activist, organized public protests, and made Cleveland a launching pad for the American Indian Movement. As Greater Cleveland’s population grew, the Lake Erie Native American Council formed in 1990 to preserve their culture in Northeast Ohio. Its membership includes people from the Delaware or Lenape, Seneca and other nations within the Iroquois Confederacy. Alongside the 500-Year-Committee, 20 years of

protests succeeded in changing the Cleveland Indians to the Cleveland Guardians and retiring the Chief Wahoo logo. Today, an estimated 3,700 American Indians live in Cuyahoga County, comprising .3% of the total population.

This is the place for success.

Heritage Comes Alive BY AJA HANNAH & JEN JONES DONATELLI AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL GARDEN

Located within the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, architect Daniel Bickerstaff designed this space to convey the past, present and future of the African American community, as well as promote the education and interest of its culture and heritage. COZAD-BATES HOUSE

Its new indoor-outdoor interpretive center underscores the area’s significance in the abolitionist movement with relics including photos, newspaper articles, engravings and more. KARAMU HOUSE

The heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll is beating louder than ever

REVOLUTION The House That Rock Built BY JEN JONES DONATELLI AND CHRISTOPHER JOHNSTON

Stodgy museums, step to the side: The glass-enclosed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a hip-shaking, guitar-flinging reminder of why Cleveland is ground zero for world-famous music. Memorabilia immortalizes the radio DJs and recording artists who invented the genre, while special galleries honor those who paved the way (such as Cleveland native Leo Mintz, the former Record Rendezvous owner largely considered one of the founding fathers of rock). And much like rock-and-roll itself, the multi-level museum just keeps on evolving. 2023 ROCK HALL INDUCTEE EXHIBIT

Nerd out on memorabilia and music from the newest crop of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees as the 2023 class takes the limelight this fall. Each inductee is delightfully different—spanning genres from pop (Sheryl Crow and George Michael) to country (Willie Nelson) to Motown (The Spinners) to art rock (Kate Bush) to hip hop (Missy Elliott) to nu-metal (Rage Against the Machine). HOLLA IF YA HEAR ME: HIP-HOP AT 50

What started as an “all-star birthday bash” for DJ Kool Herc in 1973 has grown into a full-blown music movement 50 years later. See the invite to that iconic party along with other artifacts celebrating hip hop’s big anniversary at this Rock Hall exhibit—commemorating 50 years of hip-hop artists all the way from Kurtis Blow to Kendrick Lamar.

Cool cats will dig the Velvet Tango Room, where mixologists set the mood with fresh handcrafted cocktails. For supper club vibes, hit Frederick’s Wine & Dine for chef Frederick Parks’ signature cuisine fused with live jazz flair. As for Cleveland Heights jazz staple Nighttown, its new owners have invested in a major renovation to ensure it hits a high note for decades to come.

There are two types of people in winter: those who hibernate and those who embrace the brisk. Brite Winter invites you to be the latter. Benton first fell in love with mixing music in the 90s. She would save her lunch money to buy cassettes at the now-closed Nikki’s Music on Buckeye Road. Nikki himself began to give her promo copies with remixed versions of songs, inspiring her to learn about samples and beat making. After graduating from Ohio University, Benton became a DJ. Her record-buying habit spun from her desire to sample from vinyl, eventually leading her to open her own shop. Benton’s been in her groove ever since.

Cleveland’s stages usher in many theatre experiences. At the epicenter of the action is Playhouse Square— home to the KeyBank Broadway Series, which will see iconic characters such as Fanny Brice, Marty McFly and Michael Jackson own the stage this season. As one of the country’s largest performing arts centers, Playhouse Square spans seven companies including Cleveland Play House and Great Lakes Theatre. At the former, dig into regional theatre productions including Langston Hughes’ transcendent “Black Nativity.” The lineup at the latter covers all the requisites in new ways—whether you’re laughing with “The Merry Wives of Windsor” or crying happy tears at the end of “A Christmas Carol.” In Lakewood, the Beck Center for the Arts mounts 230 performances annually, with “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” next on tap. For alternative theatre, don’t miss Tremont’s convergencecontinuum where the intimate venue makes way for imaginative fare such as the upcoming “Wonderland Wives.”

As a popular destination for both digital and hand weaving, Praxis Fiber Workshop looms large over Cleveland’s maker scene. (See what we did there?) Film buffs are free to geek out at Cinematheque, which the New York Times hailed as “one of the country’s best repertory movie theaters.” And for those who enjoy a good poetry slam, Twelve Literary Arts delivers with socially conscious programming and events for all ages.

CREATIVES A

s a child, Rashaun Dillard first explored art by drawing comic book heroes. Since then, his path has followed that of a traditional artist, working in acrylic and as a digital creator. Dillard’s paintings often contain social commentary, and he hopes his Voices of CLE work will stimulate productive conversations and a sense of togetherness.

A graduate of Cleveland School of the Arts, artist and muralist Rashaun Dillard knows the power and importance of using art as a platform for messages of hope and change. “I’d like to use my art to share the message of unity, our community experiencing tough times yet coming together in the aftermath to promote a change that we can use to teach and heal each other.”

Cleveland fashionistas know that the must-have handbag around here isn’t Prada or Coach—it’s Fount. Fount’s collection of crossbodies and carryalls (plus wallets, belts, keychains and more) is crafted in fullgrain Italian leather, derived from hides reclaimed from the meat industry. All are lovingly stitched in Ohio, as well as fair trade workshops in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. So, if ethical, sustainable sourcing is clutch for you, you’re totes covered.

FOOD STATION Bite into Cleveland’s culinary culture

Where to Eat Right Now

Pearl Street

BY TRICIA L. CHAVES

CORDELIA

PEARL STREET WINE MARKET & CAFÉ

Clevelanders had lofty expectations for the successor replacing “Iron Chef” Michael Symon’s Lola two summers ago, and Vinnie Cimino’s team came in hot—delivering in both portion size and prowess in the kitchen. Take the time to meander through the “Bellie Up” menu for an adventurous experience at the chef’s whim, and see why Tasting Table noted Cordelia among its 22 best restaurants in 2022.

After 23 years in business as The Flying Fig, James Beard Award semifinalist chef Karen Small shuttered her popular Market Avenue restaurant and said, “Thank you, next.” Enter this Europeanstyle market and wine bar, featuring a menu of seasonally-influenced small plates and desserts. The concept is the brainchild of Small and Toast owner Jillian Davis—paying homage to their shared love of natural wines.

JAJA

POPPY

With a jaw-dropping dining room crowned by a canopy of foliage and a retractable roof that’s unfurled to welcome the warmer temperatures, a trip to this splurge-worthy steakhouse will transport you to an entirely different time and place. Intimate groups can devour decadent shareable meat platters charred atop a 20-foot Argentinian-style wood-fired grill, or pick their poison from the craft cocktail menu imagined by award-winning mixologist Jeremy Owen Barrett.

Accolades abound for the newest joint venture of Food Network champion chef Jill Vedaa and her Salt+ business partner Jessica Parkison. The pair overhauled the interior of a 115-year old house on Larchmere (formerly home to Felice Urban Café). The restaurant’s name is a nod to Parkison’s grandmother Poppy Etta Hodgson, and its internationally-influenced menu features hearty fare that would surely do her proud.

Sip on a honey lavender latte alongside your croissant at this café and patisserie. Also in Cleveland Heights (plus a new Warehouse District location), Luna Bakery & Café serves up matcha lattes, mozzarella paninis and macarons— packing a serious brunch-worthy punch. Wondering who the New York Times hailed as having the “secret to an excellent sandwich?” Look no further than Roaming Biscuit. Shawnda Moye’s flagship spot in Hingetown offers stacked-high biscuit breakfast sammies that will keep you coming back for more. Nearby in Tremont, Grumpy’s Café will flip your expectations of a classic morning meal with showstopper omelets and creative benedicts. (Little wonder it was featured on “Good Morning America” this year.) And if you’re looking for Midwesterninspired fare, visit Juneberry Table for Ohio spelt pancakes—locally sourced for that extra Cleveland kick.

From cultural fests to culinary feasts, Cleveland keeps the party going through fall and winter.

Mapleside Farms.

THE LEAVES, THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’ Fall for Cleveland all over again at these scenic spots.

BY JEN JONES DONATELLI

Pumpkin spice lattes are great and all, but exploring Cleveland is the real gift of fall. Fall foliage is on full display, especially in the Cleveland Metroparks. With 18 reservations and 100+ hiking trails, you won’t have to go far to see the leaves changing color in real time. Thanks to its gorgeous grounds, Mapleside Farms is practically an advertisement for autumn. Check out its seasonal “Pumpkin Village” with a 311-foot super slide, hayrides and even a corn maze in the shape of Myles Garrett. Need some culinary autumnal delights? Shop the market at Avon-based Pickering Hill Farms for Amish meats, cheeses, jams and butters, or go straight to the source in scenic Amish Country.

See the proof at Wade Oval in University Circle, where a gorgeous pond reflects its scenic surroundings (which include both the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History). Your winter won’t be complete without a whirl on the Rink at Wade Oval, followed by a delicious hot cocoa. Speaking of ice skating, the Cleveland Foundation Skating Rink at Public Square is another thing to check off the winter bucket list. With the Terminal Tower

setting the backdrop and holiday lights making it extra-magical, it’s an epic way to experience Downtown’s most iconic outdoor destination. Less than a half-mile away is the Cleveland Mall, a series of public greenspaces first designed in 1903 to beautify the city’s civic center. (True story: the Mall is on the National Register of Historic Places as an example of the “City Beautiful” movement born during that era.) Today this gorgeous grassy expanse is flanked by some of Downtown’s most well-known buildings—but luckily, none of them block the Mall’s prime city and lake views. Cleveland gets it right with its urban sanctuaries and inviting greenspaces.

BY LISA GALEK

Thing

You deserve a treat today. MITCHELL’S ICE CREAM

B.A. SWEETIE CANDY COMPANY

Life gets a little sweeter with every visit to b.a. Sweetie Candy Company—aka America’s largest candy store in America. The nostalgic treats lining their shelves bring back treasured childhood memories. (Insert obligatory “kid in a candy store” reference here.)

YAY, SCIENCE! Great Lakes Science Center

Step into a seasonal world of wonder at Cleveland’s science spots! This October, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History prepares for the total solar eclipse with “Eclipse Fever” inside its planetarium. In November, the Great Lakes Science Center invites LEGO lovers of all ages to build on their creativity with the ever-evolving “Move It!” exhibit. As the weather turns chilly, visit the Rainforest at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo—a two-level indoor habitat with 600+ animals from around the world. Alongside underwater wonders, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium hosts “Scuba Claus Merry Meet & Greets,” where Santa braves the shark tank to chat with visitors. And “Frost: An Ice-Capped Winter Experience” transforms the Cleveland Botanical Gardens into a wonderland of dazzling light installations and seasonal soundscapes.

MALLEY’S CHOCOLATES

Hey, Charlie! You won’t want to miss this 60,000-square-foot chocolate factory. Malley’s Chocolates raises the bar as a family-owned Cleveland classic—known for everything from chocolate Easter bunnies to Ohio Buckeyes to chunky chocolate bars.

Mitchell’s. Ice Cream.

A+ Outings BY LISA GALEK

Unleash your curiosity all around Cleveland! Dive into the rich (pun fully intended) history of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland with a Centennial Exhibit celebrating the art, architecture and engineering behind this 100-year-old building. The day after Thanksgiving, touch down at the Pro Football Hall of Fame for “Free Kids Friday”—featuring a joyful day of activities and NFL grab-bag giveaways. At Cleveland History Center, the space will transform into a winter wonderland with original animatronics from early Higbee’s holiday window displays. (Maybe you’ve seen them in A Christmas Story?)

Cleveland hotels celebrate diversity in dining

BY MARY MIHALY THE CENTRO

Craving rustic, hearty Italian fare? Try The Centro inside The Metropolitan at The 9. No need to settle on one aperitivo—the Limoncello flight will do quite nicely with limecello, limoncello and orangecello. IL VENETIAN

Il Venetian in Cleveland Marriott Downtown showcases artwork imported from Venice and a list of 200+ wines that will leave you saying, “Cin cin!” Even their veal-stuffed Agnolatti is regional, topped with Sicilian pistachio sauce. BETTS

Envisioned as a “neighborhood spot” in the heart of Downtown, Betts at the Kimpton Schofield invites your taste buds to travel with Tucson-, Calabrese- and Tokyo-themed bowls. TURN BAR & KITCHEN

Located at the Ritz-Carlton, TURN Bar & Kitchen is a total smokeshow—thanks to its famous smoked cocktails like “Smoking the Sazerac” (rye, simple and absinthe) or the “Black Old Fashioned” with black walnut bitters. Betts

Neighborhoods Clevelanders aren’t squares, but we do have two: Euclid Avenue connects Public Square and Playhouse Square. In between, you’ll discover newly built apartments, celebrated restaurants, stay-up-til-dawn spots and family-friendly sites. Get a group and go to The Flats for grub and games, or take the kids on a walking tour and check things off the Cleveland bucket list. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a music mecca by the Lake, and nearby Great Lakes Science Center makes science fun. (Plus, Dippin’ Dots!) Progressive Field and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse offer some of the best in pro sports and entertainment.

BY JEN JONES DONATELLI

From sunrise to sundown, the Downtown dining scene is ready to make your day. Wake up at one of two Phoenix Coffee locations, or take a leisurely brunch at Betts inside the Kimpton Schofield Hotel. (Grab-and-go options are also available if you’re headed to a Cavs game. Win-win.) For lunch, go find out why Cleveland Sandwich Co. was hailed “Best of Cleveland” by Cleveland Magazine, or hit the new Geraci’s Slice Shop location for a gooey pizza pie.

2

Cleveland is a city with world-class experiences without the world-class ego.

76 2023–24 FALL/WINTER OFFICIAL INSIDER GUIDE / THISISCLEVELAND.COM

Once dinner hits, let your taste buds lead the way to buzzy spots like Goma (sushi); Marble Room (steaks and seafood); Acqua di Luca (Mediterranean cuisine); Jade (New Asian); or Butcher & The Brewer (brewpub). End the day with a “cheers” at always-busy (and rightfully so) Masthead Brewing Co.

Local Tip

BY SILK ALLEN

Cleveland has “retail therapy” written all over the city. Start at Cleveland Clothing Co., where it’s always tee time. Show off your Cleveland pride—and instill some in others— by gifting souvenirs people actually want. Just down the street, make pour decisions at Heinen’s wine tasting machines, or grab some organic produce or a gourmet readymade dish.

3

Not in the mood for food? Inside the 5th Street Arcades, DIY inspo abounds at Coco’s Chalky Paints, while Intro Boutique stocks affordable contemporary and business-casual options with accessories to match. Tower City’s revival offers headturning couture pieces from Infinite Boutique; statement bags in every color from In My Bag Collection; and luxury sneakers for men at The Feet Geeks. PLAY

BY JEN JONES DONATELLI

All three of Cleveland’s pro sports teams do their thing here—tailgate before a Browns game at Cleveland Browns Stadium, or cheer on the Cavs at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. (You can also get a doubleheader of Guardians baseball in at Progressive Field come baseball season.) More into shows over sports? Playhouse Square is your spot for Broadway shows, while House of Blues attracts national acts with a side of Southern-inspired food. Fun is the name of the game in The Flats, with a lively row of riverfront restaurants and nightclubs. Bet on a good time at JACK Casino, or taste your way down East 4th Street with a nightcap at comedy club Pickwick & Frolic. For family-friendly fare, look no further than the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Great Lakes Science Center.

4

MUST-SEE DOWNTOWN

1 Be entertained at Brite Winter. 2 Lace up your skates on Public Square. 3 Pregame before heading to the Dawg Pound. 4 Three cheers to Masthead Brewing Co.! 5 Eat, drink and bowl at The Corner Alley on East 4th Street.

NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT

The bold and the brainy call the artsy and academic neighborhood of University Circle their Cleveland capital. (In fact, the area has appeared on USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards for several years running as a “Best Arts District” nominee!) The districts of Wade Oval and Uptown are a vibrant Venn diagram of business, botany, medicine, education and art—from the campuses of Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals to Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA). The 2020 census highlighted University Circle as one of Cleveland’s fastest-growing neighborhoods—with nearly 10,000 residents and 13,000 students taking advantage of all it has to offer.

BY JEN JONES DONATELLI

It’s no secret that University Circle plays home to an unusually high concentration of museums, cultural venues (such as Severance Hall, home to the Cleveland Orchestra) and educational institutions (such as top-ranked Case Western Reserve University). Wind your way through Wade Oval to visit the free Cleveland Museum of Art, or dig into the dinosaur life at a Museum of Natural History. For a deep-dive into Cleveland’s storied past, don’t miss Cleveland History Center, and make sure to stop and smell the roses—and orchids— at Cleveland Botanical Garden. Closer to Uptown, moCa hints at its contemporary art contents with an equally compelling exterior: a six-sided mirrored geometric feat by architect Fashid Moussavi. And those who want to support the next generation of artists can check out exhibitions and concerts at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Cleveland Institute of Music, respectively.

CIRCLE LIFE

Cutting-edge art is the name of the game at contemporary art mecca moCa in the Uptown district. Thought provoking exhibits revolve around sculpture, paintings, photographs and music.

BY DOUGLAS J. GUTH

For starters, the sprawling Circle Square development will feature the 11-story Library Lofts and 24-floor Artisan apartment tower among 36,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space. Luxury living is the calling of the One University Circle high-rise, while Innova is an amenity-rich community near Cleveland’s beloved cultural institutions. Classic charm reigns at Park Lane Villa, which combines 1920s grandeur with sleek modern design. TREASURE HUNT

BY REBECCA FERLOTTI

A ton of culture, plenty of good eats and college-town charm make the University Circle area both beloved by locals and a bucket list stop for tourists. Slide down to Uptown for a Belgian waffle at Euro Wafel Bar or a bite of blue crab at Lee’s Seafood Boil. Nearby Falafel Café has all the Middle Eastern classics you crave, but for south-of-the-border-inspired Mexican treats, Tacologist is the way to go. For date night, browse the Cleveland Museum of Art as your appetizer to French brasserie L’Albatros. Want to harken back to university days? Grab a cold one at The Jolly Scholar— steps away from Case Western Reserve University, natch.

University Circle is considered the most concentrated square mile of arts and culture in the nation—and thanks to an influx of 1,500 new or renovated residential units, it’s easier than ever to walk to it all (not to mention Uptown’s diverse social scene and array of entertainment options).

his blue-collar neighborhood balances Cleveland’s big city feel with cozy, small town charm. Minutes from Downtown, Tremont is one of Cleveland’s oldest communities, and for all we know, might just be stuck in time. Just look at those old cottages, bygone neighborhood bars, beautiful churches and cordial local characters. Look closer and notice those come-as-you-are bars are sandwiched between Food Network-famous restaurants, modern housing, art galleries and even a pop culture monument (A Christmas Story House and Museum).

Just across the Cuyahoga River, west of Downtown, the city’s yellow-bricked West Side Market has been home to haggle-friendly meat, seafood and veggie vendors for more than 100 years, but it’s Ohio City’s Victorian-era homes, boutique eateries and famous craft brewers (like Great Lakes Brewing Co.) that have made the neighborhood one of the city’s symbols for urban renewal (where hip meets heritage). But it’s coolest locale might by the entrepreneurial and artsy district of Hingetown. And let’s not forget the new kid on the block: INTRO, a massive 297-unit apartment complex with a rooftop pool and instant hotspots like modern steakhouse Jaja.
