remember very clearly the Christmas holidays from my childhood. It was a time filled with anticipation, joy, and, of course, an abundance of delicious food. The days leading up to the holiday season were marked by excitement as we kids eagerly awaited Christmas Day! Back then, the holidays were loud, colourful, and bustling with activity. Fast forward to today, the celebrations have become quieter for me, but the essence remains untouched. The joy, the laughter, and the gathering of friends and family continue to be the core of my celebrations.

And it is pretty much the same everywhere. We may have traded the boisterousness for a more subdued affair, but the holiday spirit remains as vibrant as ever. The best season ever, I tell you.

It has become more than just a festive season.

It now is a period of rekindling old relationships and forging new ones. It has also become a time when we create beautiful memories that become the stories we tell in years to come.

How are you spending your holidays? Are you taking this opportunity to slow down and simply be? The next few days provide the perfect occasion to pause and savour the present moment. These moments of pause are rare and invaluable. Embrace them.

I have also noticed everyone posting their highlights from 2023 on social media. While it’s tempting to feel the pressure of trying to meet up or compare ourselves to others, I want to remind you that it’s perfectly okay to march to the beat of your own drum. If the only thing you did this year was survive, that is an achievement in itself, and you should be proud. You’re still here. You did it. And I’m incredibly proud of you.

As we approach 2024, I want to encourage you to embrace it with open arms. Another year is a fresh opportunity to pursue your dreams, learn, grow, and make even more beautiful memories.

I have no doubt that it will be an amazing year filled with new adventures and opportunities.

rittany Chinenye, daughter of Catherine Uju Ifejika, the renowned CEO of Brittania-U Nigeria Limited and Brittania-U Ghana Limited, celebrated her wedding with Chinedu Atanmo this past weekend. The lavish ceremony, which took place at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, was attended by a host of dignitaries from various sectors, including politics and entertainment.

The entertainment was top-notch, with highlife singer Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavor Na’bania, performing some of his hit songs. Also, Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, better known as Okey Bakassi, was the master of ceremonies, ensuring a lively and memorable event.

The couple had earlier celebrated their traditional wedding on November 28 at Harbor Point, Lagos, marking the start of their new journey together.

Betty Irabor, a name synonymous with inspiration, is not just an acclaimed Nigerian author and mental health advocate but also a pioneering entrepreneur. As the founder of Genevieve Magazine, launched in 2003, she broke new ground in the Nigerian publishing landscape. At the age of 45, she identified and filled a significant gap, guiding Genevieve to become a beacon of lifestyle and inspiration for women everywhere. Parallel to Betty’s trailblazing path is the illustrious career of her husband, Soni Irabor. His name echoes through the halls of Nigerian media as an award-winning icon with over four decades of experience in radio, TV broadcast, and film. Soni is not just a broadcaster and communications consultant but also a revered speech trainer. His portfolio extends to handling numerous PR and media relations assignments, showcasing his versatility and depth in the media industry. Together, Soni and Betty Irabor have not only grown as individuals in the media space but have also cultivated a relationship that many admire. Their marriage is a celebration of love, partnership, and mutual growth, proving that achieving great heights in one’s career is possible while maintaining a harmonious and loving home.

In this interview with Funke Babs Kufeji, they share with us the secret to a successful forty years together, love, life, family and their reality show “The Irabors Forever After’’.

BETTY IRABOR Congratulations on your renewal of vows and celebrating your 40th marriage anniversary. Tell us, what is the secret to your lasting relationship?

Friendship is the only secret I know that is the secret to our 40 years of marriage. We were friends long before we became a couple, and that friendship is a constant reminder of why we decided to get married. As friends, we laugh together and share precious moments together. We genuinely like each other. Then, we managed to resolve our conflicts amicably without dragging ourselves like tiger generators (lol) outside of our four walls. We are also good at communicating with each other. Sonny and I talk a lot. Talking is great for healthy relationships.

Tell us how you met your husband and what quality endeared you to him then and to date.

Sonny and I met at a corporate event hosted by a company where I was a rookie Public Relations Officer in 1983. I was out of my depth hosting the event, and Sonny came as the knight in shining armour and swept me off my feet. It was a pure fairy tale of boy meets girl, and one year later, we were married. Sonny is very caring, selfless and kind, and for me, those were boxes I needed ticked. Forty years later, he is still all of those. I love the idea of growing old with him because I know that I can count on him until death do us part.

What has been the most challenging time, and how did these experiences strengthen your relationship?

The most challenging time? Wow! We have had quite a bit, from standing together strong during the years of my battle with depression and suicide ideations to 2020 when Sonny suffered a stroke! We have faced bad times, but the good thing is that we face these challenges as a team, not as individuals because we are always stronger together. We have literally walked through the valley of the shadows of death, but we are still here. We vowed to do for better or worse in sickness and health; these vows are often tried and tested by crazy circumstances. Anyone who tells you they haven’t been tried and tested in their marriage must be a kind of angel.

The beautiful thing is that we are still here living the forever dream.

Going by societal values, do you think what it means to be a good wife or husband has changed over the time you’ve been together?

You’re either inherently a good person, or you’re not a good person. It has nothing to do with being married. Marriage only amplifies one’s true character. You can’t fake good character, especially in a marriage. In marriage, you just continue to strive to be good to each other.

How have you kept the romance and fun in your marriage?

Keeping the romance and fun is what Sonny and I do best. We love each other’s company genuinely and entertain each other by partying together, watching movies, listening and dancing to soul music, hanging out with friends and hosting our own small parties. We just indulge in stuff that makes us happy. When you’ve been married for 40 years and life has thrown you curves, you often don’t want to socialise, but we are social by nature, so we just get up and have fun.

Marry your friend and lover. Understand your friend and lover. Do not leave your friendship and love in the hands of ‘outsiders’! It doesn’t matter who or what that ‘outsider’ is to you.

In marriages, most times, issues come up when third parties get involved, which is common in our country because they say you marry a family, not a man or woman. Based on your experience, what role should friends, extended family, and community have in your marriage?

Shut out third parties when it comes to your privacy, but don’t forget that your in-laws are members of your family, too; you can’t shut them out. If you want a happy and healthy marriage, don’t allow meddlers in. It’s not everyone that wishes you well. If and when you need help in your marriage, see a professional counsellor or that “one person” that both of you are comfortable speaking to.

Let’s talk about your reality show “The Irabors Forever After” on Africa magic on DSTV. Tell us what viewers should look forward to and why the show is a must-watch.

The Docu-Series “The Irabors Forever After” on Africa Magic captures precious moments and significant milestones of our marriage. It is unscripted and unfiltered in its authenticity. It is Sonny and I opening our world to viewers without attempting to change any narrative on marriage. The series is captivating because we are very open about our most vulnerable moments.

Every marriage has its highs, it’s in between, and its lows and ours is no exception. Viewers who have experienced these types of challenges or any other can relate. It’s a celebration of friendship, love, family and marriage. The high point of the series is the 40th anniversary/ renewal of vows ceremony, where family and friends turned up to honour one of theirs. Its relatability and originality are the strongest points of “The Irabors forever after.”

changed over the time you’ve been together?

I believe I entered the relationship knowing I was doing so with my friend, lover and partner, who generally saw things as I did. We had things in common but also respected each other’s differences. We grew wiser and more mature as we grew older.

5 NOLLYWOOD MOVIES TO BINGEWATCH THIS CHRISTMAS

What was your experience filming “The Irabors Forever After”, and what was the highlight for you?

Exhilarating! I got renewed hope, especially as I was slowly getting out of a protracted illness.

I also felt a rejuvenation of 1983 in 2023! You may not understand it, but there was a newness of spirit for me. Thank you, Betty!

This holiday season, one of the things you can do is to binge-watch a bunch of heartwarming and entertaining movies!

And what better choices to make than these Nollywood blockbusters?

Lastly, with the high divorce rates and separation amongst couples these days, tell us, in your opinion, what is your number one piece of advice as a man for a successful marriage, and what should be a deal breaker to end a marriage?

Marry your friend and lover. Understand your friend and lover. Do not leave your friendship and love in the hands of ‘outsiders’! It doesn’t matter who or what that ‘outsider’ is to you. Do not depend on ‘Olofofos’ for information you can get directly from your wife! If you are in doubt about your spouse from the onset, then don’t embark on that journey. It is either you are to blame, or she is to blame. There has to be a good level of trust and respect. The world is getting more individualised because of the distractive elements in our environment. If you cannot trust yourself, then you cannot trust your spouse! Charity must begin with you.

CHRISTMAS IN MIAMI: Released in December 2021 by popular Nigerian comedian AY Makun as one of the movies in the “Adventures of Akpors” series, Christmas in Miami is definitely a top choice if you’re looking to kick back and laugh your way throughout the holidays. Starring Richard Mode Damijo, Osita Iheme, the legendary John Amos, and AY himself, the movie packs lots of drama and comedy and is a fun watch.

2. CHRISTMAS IS COMING: In 2017 came this romcom from Ufuoma McDermott about a tomboy forced into undergoing a makeover by her friends, leading to a series of hilarious yet suspenseful events. Ufuoma shines in the lead role, supported by Chioma Chukwuka, Deyemi Okanlawon, Sola Sobowale, and many more.

3. A NAIJA CHRISTMAS: What happens

Lastly, with the high rate of intolerance between couples and divorces, we know there is no hard and fast rule to this thing called marriage, but, in your opinion, what is your number one piece of advice for a successful marriage?

Marriage is work! If you’re not ready to be married, then stay happily single. Don’t come into a marriage with unreasonable and unrealistic expectations of each other. Good marriages are the result of two people who are committed and dedicated to the same cause. Good marriages don’t just happen by accident; they happen with deliberate intentions by the couple. Whatever you sow in a marriage is what you will reap. Remember not to be so fixated on your partner’s flaws that you forget your own flaws.

SONI IRABOR Congratulations on your 40th marriage Anniversary. Do you still remember how you knew that Betty was the woman you wanted to spend the rest of your life with?

It was at a get-together Betty organised for her company VOO. They were launching a musical album by Jonel Cross. Betty got up to speak to the gathering, which comprised mainly broadcast and print journalists. She had this bright smile with sparkling white teeth. I just told my colleague and friends, Manny Onumonu and Okpo Emetu, “I’m going to marry this girl! See as she fine!”

Betty and you recently celebrated your 40th anniversary with a renewal of vows and a very elaborate reception. Tell us what this meant to you and how it made you feel.

It made me feel young and proud. Forty years is no joke!

Young men now associate marriage with increased responsibilities and with a greater possibility of financial loss, which wasn’t so back in your time. Will you say it’s important for a man to be financially buoyant to marry a wife?

Marriage is not a business venture. It is a consolidation of friendship, love and mutual understanding. They (the man and wife) owe each other a duty to love each other in thick and thin. I agree it is not a bed of roses alone because the rose plant also has thorns! It is a give-andtake relationship that gives mutual respect for each other.

when a Nigerian mother puts extra pressure on her three sons to get married and dangles the possibility of owning their most beloved house as a gift for whoever brings home a wife first? You can only imagine the extent to which each would go! A Naija Christmas was one of the most talked about movies in 2021.

It had all the elements of drama and comedy plus everything we love about our dramatic Nigerian mothers. With an amazing cast, including the late Rachel Oniga, Efe Iwara, Kunle Remi, Abayomi Alvin, etc, there was everything to love about this movie.

4. THE WEDDING PARTY:

Kemi Adetiba did a wonder with this one! This definitely sealed her as a force to reckon with in the movie industry. This 2016 movie was the highest-grossing Nollywood movie at the time.

Starring Adesua Etomi, Banky Wellington, Sola Sobowale, Richard Mofe Damijo, Ali Baba, Ireti Doyle, Ikechukwu, and many more, this movie won everyone’s hearts.

From its relatability to exaggerations to dramatics, comedy, costume, and acting, this is a wholesome comfort movie!

Ingredients 1 whole chicken 2 lemons, halved A bunch of fresh thyme 2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 teaspoons of paprika Salt and black pepper to taste 4 cloves of garlic, minced Recipe Preheat your oven to 180°C. Rub the chicken with olive oil, paprika, garlic, salt, and pepper.

Stuff the chicken cavity with lemon halves and thyme.

Roast in the oven for 1.5 hours or until the juices run clear.

Could you share some insights into your creative process and how you come up with your unique sound and style?

Music is such a beautiful concept that inspires me, and because I love good music, I listen to almost all genres. I combine the elements that resonate with me from my listening experiences with what I already know. This process helps my personal and artistic growth, and I haven’t even reached my full potential yet, as this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Love and living are two of the things I am most grateful for right now. I am surrounded by a lot of love, and I think it’s a blessing to be living in this moment.’

How do you stay true to yourself in an industry that can be demanding and constantly evolving?

One of my mentors always said you must be yourself to stand out. Personally, I don’t feel pressured; I know I’m good, and I’ll never give anything less than my best. Plus, I’m a lover of growth and creativity, so I’ll always keep evolving and never be caught slacking.

On the 2nd of November, you released your first EP, “RAVI.” What was the inspiration behind this EP? The plan was to be as versatile and creative as I could. The EP was also a way of finding myself; it’s my first body of work, so I had a bust of ideas from just imagining how I wanted to be introduced.

After discussing with my team, we set out straight to work.

How would you describe the overall sound and style of it?

Afrobeats is the foundation, but you will hear a fusion of some R&B and high-life elements in there.

in Nigeria. My song ‘What is Love’ peaked at #1 in Ghana on one of the DSPs. My song ‘Magician’ secured #5 on the Top 10 Apple Music Nigeria chart. It has been a beautiful journey, and I know there’s so much more to come.

Which significant lessons would you say you’ve learned along the way, both personally and professionally?

Personally, I’ve learned that hard work pays, especially in the music industry. I’ve learned that you must keep growing, which means you must let go of some things. I’ve learned that with God, anything is possible, and the journey can only lead to greater heights. Most importantly, I’ve learned to protect my energy from negative criticism so that it doesn’t affect my drive and focus.

How do you want your music to impact and inspire your audience, particularly young artists who look up to you as a role model?

I make really beautiful music that resonates with people of all ages and moods. Take, for example, my song ‘What is Love,’ which explores the complexities of love in our generation. I hope listeners are inspired to become better versions of themselves and to strive for improvement through my music.

Can you share any upcoming projects or collaborations your fans can look forward to?

Honestly, there’s a ton of new music on the way.

I had recorded a lot of songs even before this EP dropped—amazing ones, trust me (my personal favourites are yet to be released). I’ve also collaborated with some big names, and you’ll find out soon. Plus, I’ve developed a bit of an addiction

Are there any specific themes or messages that you wanted to convey through the EP? Love and living are two of the things I am most grateful for right now. I am surrounded by a lot of love, and I think it’s a blessing to be living in this moment. I didn’t set out to create a body of work with these themes; I just wanted something that would be like my introduction, which is why it was self-titled ‘RAVI.’ But after putting it together, these were the two things that stood out. Every track is distinctive and has its message.

What was the most challenging aspect of creating RAVI? There was nothing particularly challenging about creating “RAVI”, the EP. For the simple fact that I love making music, everything just had to go very smoothly. Moreover, we had God all through, and He did His thing.

From an early age, her passion for music was palpable, and she began crafting her unique sound, blending gospel songs with instrumentals from secular tracks. But determined to put her beloved city on the global music map, she embodied the spirit of resilience that thrives amidst limited resources and abundant talent.

In a pivotal moment, fate led her to meet her manager in the studio, marking a turning point in her musical odyssey. Sharing captivating covers on social media further amplified her talent and audience until she caught the attention of the Afrobeat superstar, Davido. This unexpected connection opened doors to a collaboration that propelled Morravey into an exciting new phase of her career.

Now a bonafide member of Davido’s 30BG, Morravey is poised to leave an indelible mark on the global music landscape, carrying the spirit of Port Harcourt and the vibrant energy of Afro-Pop with her every step of the way. Let’s talk about your journey into the music industry. What’s your origin story, and when did you discover your deep-rooted love for Afro-pop music?

I’ve always had a thing for music since my childhood, and having grown up in Port Harcourt, there was no way Afropop/Afrobeat music would have been exempted. My parents are music lovers, and I always found myself in musical gatherings; it was beyond my control. Destiny just called, and subconsciously, I listened.

Could you tell us about your support system on this journey? Who has been there for you, and how have they helped you along the way?

Honestly, I’ve had the best support system. From Davido to the 30BG family, Sony Music, my family, my manager…these are people God strategically

Which song from the EP holds the most personal meaning to you and why?

That would be ‘Magician.’ Magician is my most personal song on the EP because it talks about my story. It isn’t fictional or just cruise like some of the tracks on the EP. It is my grass-to-grace journey, how I’ve gone from Port Harcourt to Yankee.

What do you hope listeners will take away from the EP? I want my listeners to have a fully immersive musical experience. I want them to enjoy my voice, to feel the beat and rhythm of the songs and to find a connection in the lyrics of the songs.

RAVI, the EP, is my introduction, and I want them to anticipate what’s coming next from me.

What significant milestones have you achieved in your musical journey, and how do they motivate you to keep pushing forward?

It’s been quite humbling, I must say. The first song I ever released was on Davido’s album, an album which now has a Grammy nomination. Also, I had the highest first-day streams for a debut EP
