Dear Reader, Welcome to the WARIF Survivor Stories Series, a monthly feature, where stories of survivors of rape and sexual violence are shared to motivate and encourage survivors to speak their truth without the fear of judgement or stigmatization and to educate the public on the sheer magnitude of this problem in our society. The Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) is a non-profit organization set up in response to the extremely high incidence of rape, sexual violence and human trafficking of young girls and women in our society. WARIF is tackling this issue through a holistic approach that covers initiatives in health, education and community service.

My name is Dorothy* and here is my story!

Sometimes I wish I was not born and at other times, I console myself with one popular quote which states, “Once there’s life, there’s hope”.

I am hopeful and know that I did not survive all those years of abuse for nothing. The creator must have had a plan for me and I’m willing to share my story as a survivor of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) against girls and women.

I grew up in an abusive and toxic environment.

My father impregnated my mother during her teenage years whilst she was still in senior secondary school. Without any marital rites, her parents being strict disciplinarians threw her out of the house. My mother sought help from family and friends, but none came to her rescue. What would a teenager do? She had no choice but to move to the house of the perpetrator who happens to be my dad. You might think that this was entirely my mom’s fault, she should have faced her studies and perhaps this wouldn’t have happened to her... however, there is more to this.

My dad was a trained electrician with a primary school leaving certificate who came on referral to my house to repair a damaged cable. Their regular electrician was out of town so they had to make do with a temporary replacement as the situation could not wait for him to return. The arrangement, however, became a permanent one because he did a good job.

On one of the occasions when the new electrician came to fix a fault in the house, he came across my mum and couldn’t keep his eyes off her - she was tall for her age and had smooth chocolate skin. Whenever this electrician came to fix anything, he was closely monitored by her father who followed him around the house to monitor what he was doing. On this day, while he was fixing a faulty wire, my grandfather had to leave the house quickly and told my mum to go stay with the electrician while he worked, and ensure he left the house immediately after he was done.

It was a sad day for my mother who was then 16 years. My grandfather’s departure provided the opportunity the electrician needed to carry out a beastly act. He forced himself on her and raped her. She tried to shout but he covered her mouth so no one could hear her voice until he was done with the dastardly act. After he was sone, he threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone.

My mum was left shaken, and frightened - she could not tell anyone that she was raped by the electrician. She got pregnant from that encounter, which as I mentioned in the beginning, was what led her to move into the rapist’s house where she gave birth to a girl and that happened to be me.

Growing up as a child was uneventful for me.

I was never shown love, kindness, or attention.

Looking back, I think they both saw me as a great mistake and their only source of the problem. I lacked virtually everything that could make a child thrive and become successful in life. It was one sad story after another in my household. It was an atmosphere of dysphoria and rancor. I started school and my elementary years went by fast with nothing interesting to talk about. I had no friends because I did not want to become a laughing stock especially when they discover I am an unwanted child. I wrote my primary leaving school certificate and scaled through to a Government

Secondary School. ‘Maybe things will be different for me now, I thought. Follow me on my journey and be the judge.

My first year in secondary school was a bit challenging for me academically. I struggled with the scope of work and with adjusting to being taught by several teachers because I was introverted. In my second year, I began to gain the attention of the school gatemen – Mr. Kunle* and Mr. Audu*. I got the attention that I had longed for all my life from them. They took notice of me and complimented me. I gradually began to stop over in the mornings and after school to chat with them before leaving for my house. It was not a problem because my parents were never around - my mother was a petty trader, and my dad continued his electrical works except this time he always came home drunk. My parents frequently engaged in all-night quarrels and at other times, they were both physically abusive towards each other. I didn’t mind them any longer because I was accustomed to their lifestyle.

In the second term of my second year, one of the gatemen asked me to tell them about myself. I quickly shared my story, thinking I had a confidant, not knowing I would be taken advantage of. Mr. Kunle would ask me to wait a little longer after school; since there was never a need to rush home I would oblige. He would buy me food and ask me to eat and relax in the security room.

The unexpected happened at age 12. I was relaxing in the security room as usual and did not know when I fell asleep. I woke up when I felt a hand caressing my body, I turned and it was Mr. Kunle. I asked him to stop but he didn’t, instead, he overpowered me, lifted my pinafore pulled my panties, and raped me. He covered my mouth with his hands as I tried to shout, I struggled with him, but he was too strong for me. A short while later Mr. Audu, the second guard, come in and took his turn to rape me. When they finished, they both pleaded with me that it was the “devil” that took over their conscience. They helped to clean me up and got a bike to take me home.

I wept bitterly for days, fell ill, and could not go to school for a few weeks. My mother went to a pharmacy, bought malaria drugs, and ordered me to take them. She left as usual without bothering to find out what was wrong with me. On the second week after the incident, I summoned the courage to talk to her, but she told me she was too busy that she needed to attend to a client who had ordered some products from her. She never bothered to find out what I wanted to discuss with her when she returned. I felt sad, worried, ashamed, afraid, alone, and worthless. You may wonder where my dad was, he was drunk and an absentee dad so he was unavailable. My mother was the one paying my school fees, paying the rent and other bills. She was the breadwinner of my family. To me, my dad was dead!

When I returned to school, my teachers and classmates were worried about how I looked.

I had emaciated due to worry and sickness. I kept telling them that I was okay and that I would get better. Sometimes, I wonder if it was my upbringing that made me unable to stand up for myself and report Mr. Kunle and Mr. Audu to the teachers or school authorities. Nevertheless, they kept begging me every day; especially because as I passed by the school gate every day, I kept

ignoring them. I had made up my mind never to grant them an audience ever again.

One afternoon during my final year, after I had written our WAEC examinations, Mr. Kunle stopped me as I was passing by the gate. He pleaded with me to listen to him, and he told me they had planned a dinner to formally tender their unreserved apology to me. So, they wanted me to wait after school the next day so I could join them. Initially rejected the request but he kept pleading and assured me that they have changed, and this was to formally end the negative chapter with pleasant memories. After much pleading, I consented.

As soon as I got there the second day, they both went on their knees asked for my forgiveness. This display by both perpetrators, made me feel they were truly repentant. So, I felt relaxed and told them that I had forgiven them, but I would need time to forget We all chatted about various topics from politics to education and they offered me something to drink. The juice was poured into disposable cups and we all drank. Not long after, I took the drink, began to feel drowsy, and realized I had been drugged. Again, Mr. Audu and Mr. Kunle took turns raping me through the vagina and anus. I did not know how long it took or how many rounds they did because I passed out in the process.

I later woke up with excruciating pains all over my body, vagina, and anus. I could not find anyone of the perpetrators, and it was getting rather dark, so I struggled to stand up, managed to look for what to clean up with properly, and staggered out of the gate. I was lucky to find a bike that took me straight home. A little while later, my parents were not home yet, so I took a shower and went straight to bed. My mother came in some moments later and without uttering a word turned off the lights and went into her room. I turned over in pain, and kept pondering in my mind why I was born and if she was truly my mother or was I adopted?

I became emotionally down and began to have nightmares frequent flashbacks. I was traumatized. As shameful as this may sound, my absentee parents were in the dark and wouldn’t be bothered. As painful as this event was, I told myself never to trust anyone again, so I kept my ordeal to myself and suffered in silence. I never went back to school again.

My moment of respite and compensation came when I passed all my WAEC papers in flying colors. I also sat for my JAMB examinations and made the cut-off. I got admitted into one of the prestigious Federal universities to study Accountancy. To my surprise, my mother was ecstatic and exceptionally proud of my achievements. That was when she narrated to me the story behind her marriage to my dad.

She asked me to forgive her for the way she had treated me in the past and she told me that she behaved in that manner so I would not end up the way she did, being an only child.

My mother was happy that she had redeemed her image by birthing a child who was able to secure admission into the university. A dream she was unable to achieve. We hugged, cried, and forgave one another. I wished she knew about the several things that had gone wrong due to her high-handedness. However, I had resolved not to tell anyone, the events were passed, and I had resolved not to tell her or anyone. This, I later realized, was a wrong decision that encourages further abuse.

I resumed university still battling emotional and psychological trauma. I quickly made friends both male and female. All seemed to be going on well until my third year in the university when I met Henry, a final year student in Architecture who came to deliver a message to my coursemate Ada who always sat next to me in class. He came to our class a few more times after which Ada told me he had been disturbing her for my number.

I told her to tell him to ask me personally for it, this was to push him off, but to my surprise, he approached me himself and asked me out on a date. On the date, I found out he was a fun-loving person from a rich home, and we had something in common. . . he was an only child too.

We became fond of each other and to my amazement, he never asked me for sex even when I slept over in his room. I thought Henry was too good to be true and I treaded cautiously based on my past experiences. The more I looked the more perfect he was to me. After a year of courting, I agreed to visit his home to meet his parents. Unfortunately for me, his parents had an emergency and were out of the country the day we arrived. I had earlier spoken to Henry’s mother and she looked forward to meeting me in person. I was so disappointed but Henry assured me that I would still have a wonderful time. On the first day, we went to the cinema and a beach.

It was a beautiful experience for me. The second day, Henry invited his bosom friend that I had heard a lot about. Akin was a jovial and loud person. He always wanted people to notice him easily. I wondered what the attraction was since Henry was a calm, cool, and calculated person.

We went to a club the night Akin arrived, and we all drank alcohol until we were intoxicated. I told Henry I was tired then he called his driver to take us back home.

I was so high when we reached home, that I headed straight to Henry’s room, threw myself on his bed, and dozed off. Suddenly, I saw Henry turn me backward pulled off my clothes and pants, and started having anal sex with me. I tried to tell him this is rape and I don’t do anal sex. He covered my mouth with his hand and excitedly roamed in and out of my anus. When he finished, Akin too came on me, I tried to resist but I was too intoxicated and he also raped me by having anal sex with me.

My eyes were wide open but I was too weak to speak or move. I watched both of them perform anal sex on one another. I could not do anything as I was too weak to act or speak. I then understood their bosom friendship. When they finished, they hugged, kissed, and slumped on the bed. I was disgusted by their actions and was waiting for the effects of the alcohol to lessen so I could leave, but I slept off instead.

By the time, I woke up; Akin had left for his place. Henry apologized that he couldn’t tell me earlier that he was not straight. He told me to relax that we will get married and he will do anything for me. He pleaded with me not to tell anyone. What have I gotten myself into? I muttered. This act triggered all the unpleasant memories, the pain, flashbacks, feelings of shame, and worthlessness I was trying to forget.

I felt like committing suicide. To say the least, I was severely traumatized, I felt terrible as I packed my bags to leave. I called my mother and headed back home. I broke down into my mother’s waiting arms when I got home. I explained everything to her in detail and even the past abuses. My mother threw herself on the ground and wept bitterly. We cried until we could not anymore.

My mother called her lawyer and we reported the case to the police. The perpetrators were arrested and we were referred to WARIF CENTRE. At the center, we were given the professional help that I should have gotten if I had spoken up earlier. I was given the required medical assessment, treatment, and psychosocial services. The counselor at the center helped me a lot and gave me coping mechanisms to deal with the trauma. I then realized the importance of speaking up and seeing a therapist. I regret my ignorance. If I had opened up earlier I would not have walked the lonely road alone. I feel better and encouraged now, I am taking life one step at a time and am glad have started on my healing journey.

Zelophehad’s Daughters; Five Women who Broke the Bias In the days when Moses led Israel, five women, Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah, all daughters of Zelophehad, were with the other Israelites in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho (the first city in Canaan).

Zelophehad was one of an estimated 2 million Jews whom God had miraculously delivered from slavery in Egypt and who were now journeying towards the land of promise. God had given Moses the onerous task of rescuing Israel and taking them to Canaan. Zelophehad, like everyone who belonged to that generation, except Joshua and Caleb, did not make it to the promised land but died in the wilderness.

At this time, Israel was nearing Canaan and the elderly Moses was allocating land.

According to their law, land was given as an inheritance to male children only. Zelophehad’s daughters had a problem with this law. They found it unjust. I would imagine the five sisters met to deliberate on the issue and to decide what their next course of action would be. Together, these women came up with a plan to take their case to the authorities; to break the bias. Something tells me Zelophehad had brought up his daughters to be confident, self-assured women, who knew how to speak up for themselves. Zelophehad must have been a HE FOR SHE, a man who supported women’s rights.

So Zelophehad’s daughters requested audience with the decision makers of Israel and got it. On the appointed day, they stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the lead-

ers and the entire assembly and made their case: “Our father died in the desert. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sins and left no sons. Why should our father’s name disappear from this clan because he has no sons? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

Their audience must have been taken aback. These women were doing something that was unheard of. The law was the law and it had stood unchallenged for generations.

Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah presented their case. The responsibility of taking the final decision rested with Moses.

Their request made sense to him and yet Moses could not do anything about it because there was no precedent to follow.

Moses decided to take the matter to God. All Israel waited, with bated breath, for the divine verdict. It came: “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and turn their father’s inheritance over to them.” But God did not stop there. He went on to promulgate a new land law stipulating that if a man died without having a son, his daughters would be next in line to inherit his property before his brothers, his uncles and his other relatives. The daughters of Zelophehad broke the bias.

The journey towards change began for Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah, when they realised they deserved more than they were getting. The sisters took

the first step by deciding to do something about their circumstance. The daughters of Zelophehad eventually made a difference by taking action. They had the advantage of numbers and used it, being united in purpose. The sisters must have had different personalities and perhaps differing views on several matters. But on this case of bias, they were on the same page. Now that their father had passed, they were probably faced with the very real option of going their separate ways. These women could have thrown their arms up in despair in the face of a law that did not favour them. But they choose to stay together and confront the norm, to take the risk, to dare to break the bias.

In their days, when the law reigned supreme and grace had not yet appeared, the daughters of Zelophehad were able to discern rightly that Jehovah was greater than the law. Something told them they could access the Father-heart of God and get their heart’s desire. In one accord, the daughters of Zelophehad marched to the tent of meeting, stood at the doorway of the tabernacle of meeting and presented their case. Judgment was ruled in their favour, leaving us some crucial points: that women should not settle for less than they are worth, that women should make a case for what they want, that God is a HE FOR SHE who is willing to listen to His daughters and pass fair judgement.

HADIZA BALA USMAN She initiated the campaign for the rescue of the Chibok girls #bringbackOurGirls which turned into a global movement advocating for the rescue of the 276 girls abducted from Chibok secondary school. For that campaign, she was recognized amongst Financial Times Most Influential Women 2014, CNN most inspiring women 2014, and Ebony 100 Most Influential Black Women 2014.

She contested for House of Representatives in Musawa Matazu federal constituency, Katsina state in 2011 under CPC. She was Secretary for the CPC renewal Committee on whose recommen-

dation CPC merged with other political parties to form APC. She was Admin Secretary to the 2015 Presidential Campaign Council where Muhammadu Buhari was elected as Nigeria’s President. She was a Member of the 2015 Presidential inauguration Committee representing the APC incoming Government. She was Secretary of the APC 2018 National convention Committee that conducted the primary election in which President Buhari emerged as APC Presidential flag bearer. She was Director Contact and Mobilisation of the 2019 Presidential Campaign Council.

She is the only woman that has been Secretary of a National Convention Committee and also the only woman that has been Director contact and mobilization of a Presidential campaign since the beginning of our democracy in 1999.

She was the first female to be appointed Chief of Staff to the Governor of Kaduna State in 2015 and was the first female to occupy that role in the 19 Northern States.

She was the first female to be appointed Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority in 2016.

FUNMI OLOTU Joan Oluwafunmilola was born in 1983. Funmi was educated at Corona School Gbagada Lagos before proceeding to Federal Government Girls College Sagamu.

Thereafter, she attended the University of Ibadan and obtained a degree in Economics in March 2005.

After her one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the Cross River State Government, she obtained a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Lagos with a specialty in Strategic Management. With over 15 years of working experience, she has held several roles in telecommunication, public service, and NGO. Funmi is a Certified Social Entrepreneur with certification in Social Sector Management from the Enterprise Development Center (EDC) of the Lagos Business School (LBS), through a scholarship from the African-American Institute and Coca-Cola foundation. In addition, she has completed several courses and programs on Human Resources, Tax Administration, Project Management, and Public Policy

amongst others.

She is an associate member of the Institute of Directors, Nigeria (IoD) as well as an associate member of Women in Management, Business and Public Service (WIMBIZ).

Funmi’s Excellent Leadership, Communication, Collaboration, and Organizational skills have over the years sharpened her ability to identify, analyze and proffer strategic transformational change slated later for the year. Recently, she was chosen to participate in the African Civic Engagement Academy supported by the Government of the United States of America in partnership with the University of Georgia.

She is unapologetically a lover of politics and passionate about good governance which made her get involved in politics at an early age. Funmi is currently the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Lagos State on State Lotteries and one of the few young women to watch out for in the Nigerian Political Space.

STELLA OKOTETE Stella Erhuvwuoghene Okotete is a graduate of Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies and Diplomacy. She also holds a Diploma in Law from the Rivers State College of Arts and Sciences with an ongoing Master’s degree in Public Administration, Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution.

Before her appointment as Special Adviser (SA) MDGs

in Delta State, she had a brief stint in politics, having served as an elected Councilor in Ughelli-North Local Government Area.

Okotete is currently the Executive Director, Business Development of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) as appointed by His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2017. She is the current National Women Representative of the APC Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC). Stella also initiated the “APC Women Lobby Group” to lobby for constitutional reforms to incorporate professional female bodies in the party, clamor for the eradication of violence against women in politics, and encapsulate women’s inclusion in governance. Stella in her quest to engender broadbased women’s visibility and inclusivity in governance, business, and politics. Since your foray into politics, have you at any time, felt disadvantaged or treated unfairly because of your sex? Have you at any time faced any form of chauvinism in the Journey?

Fortunately, I was privileged to have an encouraging foundation in my journey. I was groomed and mentored by leaders who believed in my capabilities and my vision rather than sidelining me because of my gender. They created every opportunity for me to fulfill my potential. This served as an encouragement for me and motivated me to get to where I am today.

Venturing into politics is not for the faint-hearted because of its murky waters. What gave you the courage to take this step and what challenges did you face?

Venturing into politics is not for the fainthearted, yes! But what gives me the courage is that our country Nigeria and the good people of Nigeria deserve better than what was been offered them about 17 to 18 years ago when I ventured into politics as a young politician in Delta State. I ran for councillorship which I won and I served my people as a councilor. Under my stewardship I was able to provide my community with clean borehole water, I was able to renovate health care facilities as well as give them some dividend of democracy and some empowerment starter packs to encourage women in business and also young people who had skills that

BETTY C. EDU Betta Edu is currently the Commissioner for Health of Cross River State where she has revolutionized the health care system through innovation, purposeful leadership, and integrity. Her unique leadership qualities saw her emerge as the Chairman of the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum from 2020 to date. In this capacity, she has reformed the organization, giving it a legal status, and formally affiliated with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum. She organized the first-ever health summit by the Forum which facilitated strategic engagement of the health commissioners with development partners, private sector, academia, and the civil society to bridge the information gap that existed between them, review progress towards UHC, identify opportunities for improvement and foster strategic partnerships to serve Nigerians better through policy actions and optimization of investments.

needed to be supported. So, the challenges I faced was more of acceptability, because starting politics at the grassroot was not so easy—a lot of the local people required me to speak my local dialect which I could not at the time. There is a lot of insincerity in the game, but I can tell you and am speaking to those who really want to go into politics and be change-makers, you can choose to be different. Like it or leave it, people are watching you and when you are different, doing the right thing when you speak for the people and is selfless in service, people will recognize you, and then you will get promoted. I started as a councilor, I became a Special Assistant, Special Adviser, I became an executive director of the bank and God graciously made me the woman leader of the Ruling party at the age of 36. It shows that diligence, selfless service, and sincerity of purpose are the driving that every female politician should have.

with her UHC policy agenda, she established the Cross River State Health Insurance Scheme which has over 60,000 enrollees accessing quality healthcare and fully protected from financial risk.

She established partnerships with local and international development partners and mobilized over USD10 million into the state health system to support strategic investments in resilient systems for sustainable health (RSSH) and quality healthcare service coverage. She has revolutionized the primary healthcare system in the state through policies and programs that promoted innovation, quality of care, and efficiency.

What advice will you give to encourage women to partake more in politics and what is your take on the recent setback of what NASS did and their attempt damage control?

Every single woman has got potential. Every single woman can make a difference we just have to know our strengths and capitalize on our them. The advice that I will give to women is that we should all come out and participate in politics. We have the numbers, we have the creativity, the energy and the patience to mold and really improve whatever we put our hands on. I know in recent times, we have had issues with our demands at the National Assembly led by Her Excellency Aisha Buhari and other women supported her very strongly. We believe if we can get more women into the legislative arm of Government, we should be able to get whatever we want as an amendment of the constitution that would be more favourable for women. It is not really a setback as it looks, it’s just a push, a stronger push to get women all over the country to unite with one voice to make a difference which will contribute to the development and improve things for our nation.

If you don’t Dare - You will never Win. This has been my inspiration. It’s been a hectic venture. Women in politics always somehow hold the shorter end of the carrot but with painstaking articulation and maintaining a high degree of decorum, l was able to pull through the thick clouds. Unfortunately when the argument is lost, most quarters usually resort to SLANDER. It is assumed that Women should retire from work at a certain time, whereas excuses are always made for the Men who keep late nights from one meeting to another Networking and Politicing. Unfortunately, we women are our worst ENEMIES. The older ones do not encourage the younger female politicians. Personally, we miss the Likes of Iyom Chief Mrs Josephine Anenih. A mother in Israel. An Articulate Mentor, A Non-Divisive Leader, A World Class Entrepreneur who ventured, sojourned and retired meritoriously from Politics. Her words of Encouragement and gingering you onto greater heights has helped so many young aspiring Politicians like us. She would always tell us - Change the NARRATIVE - Politicians are not all the same as Diapers - Full of shit you can also be minty, fresh scented, and breathe life on everyone you come across.

AISHA AUGIE Aisha Augie is an internationally celebrated Creative Artist, Photographer, Filmmaker, and Communications Specialist from Nigeria. She is multifaceted with relevant experience as an entrepreneur, working with multiple industries in the private sector; before delving into Public Service. She is a bridgebuilder between these sectors and engages in policy formulation and development initiatives that support job creation, youth and women empowerment across Africa.

Most recently, Aisha serves as a Special Adviser on Digital Communications to the Nigerian Minister of Finance, Budget & National Planning. Prior, she was the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Governor of Kebbi State where she coordinated statewide publicity and reputation management for the Govern-

ment. The popularity of her work in communicating policies to the grassroots, led her to run for a seat at the Argungu/Augie Federal Constituency, House of Representatives primaries in Kebbi State under the APC, making her the first female ever to try.

ERHIATAKE IBORI - SUENU Ergiatake ibori - Suenu was born in1980. In 2005 she graduated from a university in the United Kingdom with a degree in Business Studies with Information Systems.

She also has a certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), a Certificate from LSE in Advanced leadership and a Certificate from Møller Institute at Churchill College University of Cambridge for Advanced Leadership Programme. She is the Chairman House Committee Finance and Appropriation and a Member representing Ethiope West in the House of Assembly.

In December 2011, Erhiatake along with her organization, created The S.H.I. Mobile Free Clinics. They trained doctors in the UK to become Mobile General Practioner (MGP’s). The Clinic has been on the road three times since its inception in 2011. Assisting the primary healthcare in Ethiope West local government area, this scheme has helped thousands of people around the area. She set up skill acquisition centers to train victims of flood disasters in dif-

ferent vocations and she also delivered health care services to the victims and distributed relief materials as well.

PRINCESS MIRIAM ODINAKA ONUOHA Miriam Odinaka Onuoha started her childhood education at Central School Umunachi Osu-Ama and then Tilley Gyado College Markudi in Benue State. She also attended Aquinas Model Secondary School Osu. She proceeded to the University of Lagos and graduated with a degree in Estate Management. She then went to the University of Abuja and graduated with a Masters degree in Environmental Planning and Protection. Before she got into the Federal House of Representatives, she served as a Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Bayelsa State on International Development Cooperation amongst other previous political engagements. She was also a Board member of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC). She was a member of State Implementation Committee (SURE- P) Community Services, Women and Youth Employment Scheme: a task which earned her the name - MAMA SURE P. She is a politician of the All-Progressives Congress from Imo State, Nigeria.

She is a member of the House of Representatives, representing Okigwe North - Onuimo, Isiala Mbano, and Okigwe LGA Federal

constituency.

Within this her first tenure at the Green Chambers, she has moved several motions on National Interest and tendered many bills.

To be honest, it is both a yes and no. Yes, because there are some contexts within the political space where as a woman, my voice is low in the room and not considered or ignored. It can be quite disheartening. No, because I must also say that there are many instances that my contributions have received the best support and created value, just because I am a woman. I have learnt to show them (that as women, we CAN) and not fight them.

My contributions have earned me unexpected respect from some men that I didn’t expect. As my principal and mentor, the Minister of Finance, Budget & National Planning, Mrs Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed would say “Sometimes we are the pioneers in the room and we must remember that we are seen as representatives of all women. We may have to work twice as hard but we are making it easier for the women that will come after us”.

I won’t say courage... more like what inspired or guided me into politics? It’s a very long story, but I will try to simplify it. A good man saw something I couldn’t see in myself...HE Sen. Dr Okowa inspired me to serve my people. I love my people and I love working for them and doing what a lot of people believe is “impossible”. I started an NGO while working for His Excellency in 2011, Starlite Hopes Initiative (SHI). We provide free healthcare around Delta State from one community to another community. Politics have offered me the perfect platform to support and listen to the needs of my people. In a nutshell, I got elected and became the property of my people, (Ethiope west constituency). We opened our 1st clinic on the 14th April 2012. I am grateful to Almighty God as we are 10 years in April 2022. I am inspired every time I hear a baby has been delivered at our SHI free clinic in Ugbenu, Oghara Ethiope West. I am equally inspired every time I see the growth and progress we are making in reaching out to so many at the Jesse clinic also in Oghara Ethiope West. What we are doing in the communities give me a lot of inspiration and encouragements and judging by how we have grown from 2015 as a people. Together!!!

I was encouraged by the inspiration to show that I can be anyone I want to be. Internal motivation to swim against the current like coming out of an abusive marriage and still getting the best out of life without wallowing in self pity or any form of excuse for failure.

Challenges were enormous and of course nobody believes in you more than you do yourself so I had to show determination in my push to get to the top - the right way! I contested for the same office three good times but won in my fourth attempt as the first female to represent my Okigwe / Onuimo / Isiala Mbano Federal Constituency, Imo State. I have dedicated my time to serve them with the best of my abilities displaying the highest respect for all my leaders and constituents in recognition of our social - cultural and ethnic dominance and my reverend male leaders on whose mandate I am humbled to be so seated. May God bless all my leaders - men, women and youths for their overwhelming support for me across party lines. By rhe special grace of God, I will not disappoint my people. I will continue to raise the bar in my exploits at bringing developments closer to my people.

ISIOMA: I love how the lounge wear on Andrea is mixed in patterns. A black or gold low heel mules would have made it picture perfect. 7/10

ISIOMA: If you are looking for how to style your lounge wear in a street forward way, take a cue from the mirror girl because she styled her exceptionally well. 8/10 KONYE: I love how Fisayo makes everything look edgy. This lounge wear is perfectly paired with a black fur coat and white kicks. 8/10

KONYE: I am sure getting a pair for myself, I love the mixed patterns, colour and fit. 8/10

FUNKE: While Fisayo’s lounge wear is very fashion forward, it is the coat that brings the whole look together. 7/10

FUNKE: I do love the lounge wear Andrea has on but I am not sure about her choice of foot wear, just maybe because she is not ready to hit the streets yet.
