t feels like just yesterday when I first laid eyes on Ruth Osime. She was clad in a striking red dress, commanding the lobby of the Thisday Office in Apapa. I remember being a wide-eyed corper anxiously waiting to be assigned to my desk, unaware of the journey that awaited me. Her presence was magnetic, exuding confidence and authority as she effortlessly strolled past. Until that moment, I had only seen her on the pages of the paper but in person, she instantly left an indelible impression on me.

I wasn’t initially posted to the Style desk, but as fate would have it, I ended up there. It was an unexpected turn that shaped my career in ways I could never have imagined, and Ruth Osime was a soft landing in the whirlwind of my uncertainties. With a welcoming smile and warm demeanour, she turned a wide-eyed, inexperienced stranger into a confident journalist.

She was a paradox in every sense of the word. Her guidance was gentle yet tough. She had this unique ability to make you feel at ease but still quiver in her presence.

Regardless, she never belittled my lack of experience but always encouraged learning and growth. In her, I found not just a boss but a home.

The office, with its deadlines and demands, became a place where I thrived, thanks to her stern but nurturing presence. Long days and tight deadlines were our constant companions, yet she led us through them with unwavering determination. She demanded excellence, pushing us beyond our limits. Yes, of course, we groaned and complained in her absence, but in hindsight, her approach was what we needed to excel. Now, as I find myself in her shoes, I understand her methods and aspire to inspire my team similarly.

Over the years, our relationship has evolved from mere professional acquaintances to something much more profound. She has become a mentor and a mother figure, always ready with a listening ear and words of encouragement. Her belief in my abilities has propelled me to strive for excellence, and her nurturing leadership style has imparted lessons that are now pillars of my role as an Editor.

As she turns 60, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for her presence in my life. The laughter, the light, the invaluable lessons – she has been a cornerstone of my journey. Our conversations these days often end in bouts of laughter so intense that tears would escape her eyes.

But what about those flying solo? Not to worry, because flying solo on Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to mean feeling lonely or left out. It can be an opportunity to celebrate self-love, embrace independence, and indulge in activities that bring joy and fulfilment. So, if you find yourself riding solo this Valentine’s Day, here’s your guide to making the most of it:

The anticipation leading up to the event was palpable, and the night did not disappoint. The Afrozons PreGrammy Party showcased the best of African talent and paid tribute to legends who have shaped the continent’s musical landscape.

One of the highlights of the evening was the moment when the iconic King Sunny Ade stepped onto the stage to receive a well-deserved Legacy award for his immense contribution to African music, being the first Nigerian to be nominated for a Grammy, in 1983. It may be hard to wrap your head around, but it’s true. While Nollywood has been excelling in a lot of other genres lately, including drama and action, we’ve also been gifted some gems in the rom-com genre. And yes, these movies weave tales that resonate with viewers on a deep, heartfelt level. This Valentine we are sharing with you five such titles that promise to sweep you off your feet and leave you with a lingering sense of love.

Congratulations on your 60th birthday. What’s the first tention is for just little me, Ruth. I have always said that a thing you’re going to do? Thanksgiving, personal quiet party is always the reflection of the host. Those who turn time, or party all night? up for you. 30th, 40th, and 50th were the same, but the most significant milestone will be my 60th, which I would have had by the time this interview is published. I don’t know which one I will most cherish. I would have to compare notes.

As a pioneer in Nigerian Style journalism, it couldn’t have been easy making your mark at the beginning. Take us into your thought process at the beginning of that journey.

As you know, Konye, if you have worked with Prince Nduka Obaigbena, you know he will take you through the reins. He will push you to your limit and if you cannot swim, you will sink. Simple.

You learn the hardknocks, pick up the pieces and rechannel and reboot.

There are no short cuts to success. You must put in the blood and sweat until you see the light at the end of the tunnel instead of the train coming the other way. I went through my teething stages, looking for good photographers, planning pages, coming up with ideas, developing concepts, creating waves, and making sure I made my mark in the fashion industry.

It hasn’t been a straightforward trajectory, but it’s something that I thank God for. It was a difficult journey, but we sailed through.

Yourself, Latasha, Azuka, Ono and Funke went through me, and when I see how successful you all have forged your own paths, I feel validated.

What advice would you give to young professionals, especially women, navigating the balance between personal and professional life?

I’ve never been one to put my personal life out there per se. In fact, lm terrible with updating information on my instagram page. I’m not on Facebook. Some people believe that I don’t “brand myself enough”, but I’ve always felt that my professional and personal life, even though they are intertwined, there must be some part of my personal life that remains just so. In today’s times, you see all sorts of characters on social media and you wonder if they will have staying power. The whole world doesn’t need to know you have a headache today or ate toast for breakfast. The whole world doesn’t need to know that you fought with your best friend, sacked your driver or lost your purse in Paris!

Back to your journalism career, you have interacted with influential figures and newsmakers for decades. How did you navigate the industry while maintaining editorial integrity?

That’s a funny question because I believe in social currency.

Social currency you earn over years. I wasn’t just a journalist who interviewed people. I built relationships during the course of my career, and it’s those relationships that have now helped me transcend to the second phase of my career. I’ve always had goodwill, and I hope that continues and transcends till the end of time.I have friends from all walks of life. Editorial integrity is also part of building a relationship. I have never abused the power of the pen.

There’s hardly any public event that you can go to without being recognised. How do you handle the pressure of public scrutiny and expectations from being a public figure?

One, I don’t really see myself as a public figure.

When people come to me and greet me, I keep a smile on my face. Even when l am attacked on the media space, l move on. Part of life.

How has transitioning from print journalism to TV been for you? What do you enjoy the most about your current role?

It has been relatively easy for me to transition. Still learning the ropes though. I like to explore and l love to ask questions. I probe and probe and probe. Even in my role as the anchor of Perspectives, my guests vary from the most conservative to the most controversial. Some might frown at my choices but in life, you have the good, the bad and the ugly.

Everybody cannot talk about “boiling water at the right temperature” tone all the time.

Sometime you ‘shake the bottle to wake the taste’, you rattle the cage! And when the cage is rattled, some might want to shoot the messenger but regardless, the meat in the message remains.

It’s not about what I am wearing, what car I am driving, who I am seen with, or who I cannot not seen with. I do not feel the need to impress and I’ve also owned my shortcomings. My goal is to continue to impact positively in thr lives of those l love and appreciate and vice versa. I’ve come to my comfort zone, and I’m living with it happily.

Can you share some life lessons you’ve learned that you wish you knew when you were younger?

There were certain things I wish I had done when I was younger. I would tell my younger self now, do not sweat the small stuff, believe in yourself, have confidence, and try to be what you want to be. Go the unconventional path if that will take you to your destination. Focus less on what people say about you and more on what you think of yourself and, most importantly, develop a very strong relationship with God. God is not beyond our reach. You can talk to Him daily. You don’t have to pray for ten hours, fifty hours, fast for thirteen months, no. Access to him is easy. I believe everybody has some spiritual strength.

It could be visions, it could be speaking in tongues, it could even be prophesying. What we call gut-instinct is God-given. Harness it because it will help you as you get older. As far as I’m concerned, walking without a spiritual cover is like walking with an open sore. Ayo: What are some misconceptions about love that you’ve encountered while hosting your podcast, and how do you debunk them?

Itty: One millennial guest once told us that there are only two kinds of people in the world: men and women. And that every woman is the same and every man the same as well. But then again, this is the box thing I always talk about.

People can be anything, not just trapped within your definitions of how you think men should behave and how you believe women should behave. People can be anything - get used to that.

Itty Okim and Oluwatosin Omolale, together as hosts of the top relationship podcast in the country — “Bae Gist” — are experts in dissecting the nuances of modern-day courtship and masters of meme-worthy banter.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, our curiosity about love, relationships, and all things romance is at an all-time high. Join us as we dive into a conversation that’s equal parts insightful, entertaining, and oh-so-relatable.

Ayo: What inspired you to start a relationship podcast, and how does it resonate with your generation?

Itty: Tosin and I knew we had to start something together. We have had too much energy since the inception of our friendship in 2017, and we have a thing for the media. So, when VerseFive reached out with the idea for a podcast, we jumped right in on it. To save all these children from the wicked hands of love.

Tosin: Most GenZ grow up doing ‘test and run’ with their relationships, so Itty and I decided to step in to save lives. Sometimes, my generation goes through really hard stuff, and we find it strange to talk about it because people have a wrong perception of us. “Gen Zs don’t give effort in relationships” and “Gen Zs don’t know how to love and receive love”, so Itty, the cool team at Baegist, and I said, you know what? Instead of leaving these kids clueless, let’s create a platform where they can listen to us, give us feedback, and share their one million ways to do a relationship with us!

Ayo: How do you navigate the fine line between giving modern dating advice while still respecting timeless romantic values?

Itty: Romance is romance, Ayo. Love is love.

View it from the context of the rules being the same but the people being different. So, love with Romeo and Juliet of classical times is similar to what Tosin and her man share. We understand this, and that’s why we keep recycling the same advice for all of you who don’t want to hear word and stay away from love.

Tosin: First, Itty and I create a balance with these things. We understand the need for vibrant and youthful energy, and we also understand the place for these timeless values. For dating to work, you have to be open to embracing the values that were before our existence. Again, Balance is the answer!

OLUWATOSIN OMOLALE Ayo: In a generation known for ghosting and sliding into DMs, how would you define love in the digital age?

Itty: Many people feel things that are not love, but because they often lack the right words to express their feelings, they misinterpret it to be love. This is very common in the digital age,

ITTY OKIM and that’s why many think love is a sham. To understand what love really is, we all have to experience it for ourselves because descriptions wouldn’t justify how beautiful yet exhausting and demanding it could be.

Tosin: Love is something that starts in weird places. For love to really work in this generation, it takes so much intentionality and effort. There’s social media which makes people feel like they can do better in their choice of partners. You can literally think about how annoying your partner is, and then you open Instagram, and the first thing you see is, “If he annoys you, leave him for the one who doesn’t”. It will take so much “I know this is my person” to really ignore. Love in the digital age is more work, more intentionality, and more effort.

People know what they want from relationships, while others don’t. It’s not fair to tag that certainty/uncertainty to any generation.

Tosin: I tell people I am GenZ by age but millennial at heart. My personal experiences are pretty eye-opening, and they have opened my heart to the beauty that is love. My understanding of love and commitment comes from a very strong level of self-awareness. I know that love requires two people to put in 100, so I can’t say because our Gen Z manual says, “Don’t do 100 with someone, do 30”, or my past experiences showed me there; I will now give very little. Nah. I don’t move that way. It is either all or nothing!

Ayo: Do you believe in the concept of a “soulmate,” or do you think love is more about timing and effort?

Itty: I literally had this conversation with my friend, Sharon, some weeks ago. You see, I believe anyone can end up with anyone. The best niche one can have is a “spec”. Not narrowed down to one person. However, I also think it is simply more interesting to believe in the concept of a soulmate out there waiting for us. It makes the search intriguing. And what are we without these stories and beliefs, eh?

Tosin: Love is definitely more about timing and effort. I don’t believe that there is “one” person for anybody. That concept is faulty. I say it often that whatever you feed grows. That is just how love is. If you put effort into it, it’d grow.

Ayo: What’s your take on the traditional idea of “happily ever after” in today’s diverse and

Ayo: As Gen Zers, how do you think your personal experiences have influenced your understanding of love and commitment?

Itty: I remember saying on national television last year that Gen Z people barely ever go into relationships for the long run. I thought I was right until I met this girl, and all that was on my

There will certainly be some lows and difficulties, even while married. “Happily ever after” is the ideal and what we wish for, but a relationship is work, and we shouldn’t forget that.

Tosin: ‘Happily ever after’ still exists if you want it. The world is moving really fast, and with the advancement of the internet, we see different motives being pushed about how draining love is. That is why I said something about filtering what we take in from the world /internet.

I am a huge fan of the traditional ‘happily ever after’, surrounded by people currently in the ‘happily ever after’ season, and I don’t expect less for myself.

Ayo: What role do you see technology playing in the future of dating and relationships?

Itty: I literally asked ChatBox to cook up a pickup line for me to use on a girl I met at a club

Ayo: How do you think Gen Z’s experiences with family dynamics and upbringing have shaped their beliefs about love and commitment?

Itty: Again, this isn’t limited to Gen Zers.

Almost everyone initially approaches love affairs based on information they have previously gathered from probably their parents or guardians or something. Many times, it’s wrong information, so we must be willing to learn and unlearn healthier habits.

Tosin: If anything, I am so sure it has shaped us for good. Gen Zs are healing past traumas; they are seeking therapy, identifying their parent’s shortcomings and looking for ways to treat their own family better.

Ayo: What’s your take on the concept of selflove and its importance in building healthy relationships?

Itty: You cannot give what you do not have.

You can’t love others until you fully and wholly love yourself. It’s that simple. Otherwise, you’ll get lost in the relationship, trying to be your partner’s partner and losing the core of yourself in the process. The only way to avoid this is to know yourself properly first.

Tosin: Self-love is highly important in building healthy relationships. It helps one create boundaries and makes it easier to move on when the other party is moving strangely.

Ayo: Finally, as we approach Valentine’s Day, what’s your message to Gen Z about embracing love in all its forms, whether romantic or otherwise?

Itty: I’ll say humans are vessels of love, and trying to stay away from it is trying to be inhumane. And that’s not the point of why you exist.

Conform to love. Caveat: you won’t hear me preach love again after this sha.

Tosin: Love is sweet; you should try it!

Not a bad conversion for a bunch of twentysomething-year- olds. One thing is abundantly clear: love knows no generational bounds.
