Troops Burst Gun Factory in Kaduna State, Recover Weapons, Combat Gears Kingsley Nweze Troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) on Operation Hakorin Damisa IV, yesterday uncovered a large gun factory in Kafanchan, Jema'a Local Government Area of Kaduna State and arrested a wanted gunrunner.

The Nigerian Army, in a statement yesterday, said the discovery of the factory followed a week-long intelligence operation that finally led to the capture of a gunrunner identified as Napoleon John.

This came as Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said yesterday, that troops killed 52 terrorists and arrested 53 criminal suspects, seven suspected oil thieves, adding that 61 hostages were rescued.

The army’s statement said the suspect, who confessed to the crime, led troops to the concealed factory where arms

of different calibre were sold by another miscreant identified as Monday Dunia.

"In line with the Commander Operation Safe Heaven (OPSH) and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Armoured Division, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar’s resolve to deal decisively with sponsors and perpetrators of crime, as well as mopping up illegal weapons in OPSH Joint Operations Area, troops have uncovered a gun manufacturing factory in Kafanchan, Jema'a Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

"The discovery followed a week-long intelligence operation that finally led to the capture of a wanted gunrunner, Napoleon John, who has been on the wanted list of OPSH "The suspect, who confessed to the crime led troops to a concealed factory where arms of different calibre were sold by another miscreant identified as

Monday Dunia, who confessed to have been in the business for more than five years fueling the crisis in Kaduna and neighbouring Plateau States," it said.

"A thorough search of the factory led to the recovery of 22 different weapons to include seven pistols, two locally fabricated AK 47 rifles, two military grade AK 47 rifles and 9 revolvers.

"Others include, one submachine gun, rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, machine tools and a gas cylinder. In a followup operation by midnight of yesterday uptill early hours of today, 22 September 2023, troops raided another hideout in Adua 1 village in Kafanchan and captured additional 2 x AK-47 Rifles, 2 x revolver rifles, live rounds of 9mm and 7.62 ammunitions, 6 x dangerous daggers, one x hacker axe, several empty cases of 7.62mm special rounds.

"Others are, two mobile phones,

one fragmental jacket, two police uniforms, one military camouflage trousers, one ammunition magazine carrier, one pistol holster, one military grade camel pouch, one police combat helmet, two masks, four identity cards, gunpowder, shrapnels, charms and amulets.

"Also recovered were machine tools and other equipment. The major kingpin (name withheld) is still on the run but would soon be apprehended," it said.

The statement said the GOC/ Commander OPSH commended troops for their doggedness and resilience, and vowed to ensure all fleeing syndicate members were arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law. He warned sponsors and perpetrators of criminalities to immediately abandon their evil ways and embrace lawful means of livelihood "General Abubakar also

"He further assured to treat information provided with utmost secrecy and confidentiality “Recall that the GOC/ Commander OPSH issued a stern warning to criminals during a stakeholders’ engagement with traditional and religious leaders on 10 September 2023 held at Zangon Kataf," it said.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Edward Buba, said seven terrorists also surrendered to troops.

"Overall, as at 22 September 2023, the armed forces neutralised 52 terrorists and arrested the following: 53 criminals, seven suspected oil thieves, while rescuing 61 kidnapped hostages.

"Additionally, a total of seven

terrorists comprising five adult males, one adult female surrendered to troops," he said.

The statement affirmed that the operational activities of troops of Joint Task Force Operation Hadarin Daji ranged from rescue of kidnap victims within Tsafe LGA of Zamfara to artillery missions on terrorist massing up intended on attacking troops deployment.

Others include the arrest of terrorists, collaborators and the conduct of offensive activities to disrupt terrorist freedom of action.

It stated that on September 11, 2023, troops, while on offensive patrols around Koli, a terrorist hide out in Faskari LGA of Katsina State, troops raided and rescued two kidnapped victims.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were kidnapped on September 5, 2023 along Angwan Boka – Yankara road in Faskari LGA on their way to Zamfara State.

Shettima described the current composition of the federal government, as well as the leadership of the National Assembly as historical, unique and a major pathway to Nigeria's unprecedented development.

This, he said, is more so that the expectations of Nigerians would be met regardless of the present challenges.

He said: “For the first time in our history, all the elected heads of our branches of government are produced by the hallowed halls of the National Assembly.

For the first time in our history, the heart of the executive branch of our government is serviced by the alumni of the National Assembly.

“Both the Chief of Staff and the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President are proud alumni of the National Assembly. The Secretary to the Federal Government is one of us.

"We cannot, therefore, afford to go to war. Not because we are going to overlook each other's transgressions, but because you are going to engage with those who know the gravity of your work and would never take you for granted."

Stressing the need for peaceful coexistence among the arms of government, the Vice President said given the composition of the National Assembly, it had become emphatic that ranks are closed in the bid to give unprecedented service delivery and democratic pact to the Nigerian people.

“There’s no place in this country where you can find a fraternal bond as enduring as the ones that bind the members

of the National Assembly. From converging on Abuja to water the dreams, debate the needs, and mitigate the fears of this diverse nation, we have forged friendships that defy the stereotypes of our differences. Term after term, election after election, old and new members return and exit, but the burden of managing a diverse nation has ensured that

we cannot afford to tread the path of divisions," Shettima noted.

He further reiterated the need for national cohesion, saying it has become non-negotiable if the country's potentials must be fully harnessed and tapped for prosperity and generality of all Nigerians.

"You have a President and a Vice President who are one of you

and recognise the sacrifices you make. President Tinubu has, with utter certainty, reassured us that we are not in government to go to war with the National Assembly.

We are here to collaborate and march towards shared values.

"The National Assembly is a complete spectrum of human experience. This is where you will witness eloquent testimonies

of your colleagues in defence of reason. This is where you will witness profound debates that will dismantle your age-long assumptions. But, in the end, you will realise we are all bound by our fidelity to the ideals of democracy," the Vice President charged the lawmakers.

Earlier, the Director-General of the National Institute for

Legislative and Democratic Studies, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, thanked President Tinubu for his continued support and deepened respect for legislative independence and harmony.

He said the Institute remains committed to working with the 10th Assembly in improving legislative governance.

TERRORISTS ABDUCT SCORES OF VARSITY STUDENTS IN ZAMFARA another nine construction workers engaged within the university.

This is coming as the eight graduates from Akwa Ibom State who were abducted on August 17 in Zamfara on their way to the Sokoto State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp clocked 38 days in the dungeons of terrorists today.

THISDAY gathered that the terrorists who abducted the varsity student invaded three private hostels in Sabon Gida village, near the university around 4am, shooting indiscriminately, before abducting the students.

An indigene of Sabon Gida village, Abubakar Sani, said: “The bandits came in large numbers and stormed three students’ off-campus residences in the village. They broke into the hostels and brought out a number of students. Many of those kidnapped were females, while other students were able to escape into the bush.”

As at press time, the exact number of students abducted had not been ascertained.

The Zamfara State Police Command and authorities of the university have refused to respond to enquiries about the abductions.

The nine construction workers abducted on the same day, but on the university campus, were snatched in the building provided for them by the school’s authorities.

One of the workers, Ibrahim Mohammed, who narrowly escaped from the terrorists, said the

attackers arrived in the university on motorcycles, broke into the building where the workers were sleeping and whisked them away.”

He said, “When they broke into the building, they told us to come out and follow them. I was looking for a way to escape, then suddenly I jumped out and one of the bandits fired a shot but could not get me.”

Last night, operatives of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadarin-Daji, claimed to have rescued six of the abducted students – females.

Force Information Officer, Operation Hadarin-Daji, Cpt. Ibrahim Yahaya said troops pursued the abductors to the forest and engaged them in a gun duel, supported by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) air component, and were able to rescue the six students.

Yahaya further stated that several bandits were neutralised during the rescue effort, which, he said, was still ongoing.

“The troops also recovered one AK-47, a magazine, four motorcycles and one communication gadget from the terrorists,” the officer said.

Lawal stressed that the meeting was aimed at ensuring the immediate release of all abducted persons and finding a sustainable solution to the lingering issue of insecurity that has become a source of concern to the administration.

According to a statement from Government House, Gusau, “During the meeting, the security chiefs assured the Governor of their commitment to restoring peace in the state.

“They equally unequivocally confirmed that troops had successfully rescued six kidnap victims. The security chiefs further assured that troops had neutralised scores of the kidnappers and are actively pursuing them to ensure the safe rescue of all victims.”

As at press time, the terrorists were demanding an additional N200 million ransom.

A family member of one of the abductees remarked: “We don’t know how we are going to raise that kind of money. Everybody was shocked when two parents told us that after they paid the final N8 million (to make up the N13 million ransom negotiated), the terrorists suddenly refused to release our children.

“They said instead, the kidnappers contacted them to demand an additional N200 million ransom. We have paid N13 million already. First, we paid N5 million, later N8 million. Some parents sold their lands, and some even collected loans to raise the N13 million. We have not received any help from the government. So, how are we going to raise this fresh ransom of N200 million? We have deliberately kept this development from my mother. I don’t think that poor widow will survive if she hears this. We are suffering and helpless.”

Another of the affected parents remarked: “Terrorists are molesting our children and the government can’t rescue them. They are communicating with us, parents and relatives, on the phone and we have given the numbers to security agents, yet, they have failed to do anything positive.

This is horrific.”

In the meantime, the Director

General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, has said the agency is working with security agencies to secure the release of the abducted NYSC members.

Speaking at an interactive session with members of the House of Representatives Committee on Youth Development, Ahmed said: “We have full synergy among the agencies.”

But an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, who is also a journalist, Ibanga Isine, in a piece titled, “Free Kidnapped Corps Members: An Open letter”, addressed to the NYSC Director-General, and copied to President Bola Tinubu; President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar and Minister of State, Defence, Bello Matawalle, alleged that the NYSC DG was not doing enough to free the abductees.

Ibanga said: “With due respect, General, how do you sleep in the night knowing that peoples’ children who simply answered the call to serve their country are languishing in the camp of brigands who can take their lives at any time?

“If your child or that of President Tinubu was captured in this way, would you act as if nothing had happened or that you were not responsible for them just because they did not make it to the camp?”

Cardoso was last week nominated

by President Bola Tinubu to take over from Mr. Godwin Emefiele who recently resigned his appointment.

According to a statement issued yesterday by CBN’s Director, Corporate Communications, Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, “Cardoso will steer the affairs of the CBN in an acting capacity, pending his confirmation

by the Senate.”

The statement said Cardoso and his deputies have since settled down to the task of administering monetary and financial sector policies of the federal government.

He was said to have spent most of yesterday receiving briefings from the bank’s heads of departments.

Emefiele, who is still in detention, after his suspension as CBN Governor since June 9, 2023, resigned last week to pave the way for a new CBN governor.

Similarly, the four deputy governors working with Emefiele -

Folashodun Shonubi, Aishah Ahmad, Edward Lametek Adamu and Dr. Kingsley Obiora – also resigned, to allow for the nomination of the new four deputy governors.

Cardoso was at various times Chairman of CITIBANK and also served as Commissioner for Budget and National Planning when Tinubu was Governor of Lagos State,1999 to 2007.

Cardoso studied managerial and administrative studies at Aston University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree.

He holds a Master’s degree from

the Harvard Kennedy School in public administration.

He is a member of the Cities Alliance’s Africa Think Tank Group, a group created to solve urban development challenges.

Cardoso has served as a board member of MRS Oil and was the chairman of the board of EFinA. He is a member of the advisory board of Lagos Business School and chairman of the board of African Venture Philanthropy Alliance.

The new CBN governor is the founding chairman and co-chair of Ehingbeti Summit, the Lagos State

Economic Summit. He is also a former executive lead at Harvard Kennedy School alumni association.

FG Raises Salaries of Federal Tertiary Institutions’ Lecturers It wasn’t what we negotiated, says ASUU Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the implementation of 35 per cent and 23 per cent of salary increment for staff of all federal tertiary institutions.

This is as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has described the government’s gesture as a far cry from what the university lecturers were negotiating for.

In a letter dated September 14, and addressed to the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, the Chief Executive Officer of the Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, Ekpo U. Nta, said the federal govern-

ment had issued a circular on the implementation of the adjusted salary structure.

The letter by Nta, on September 14, 2023 shortly before Professor Mamman’s departure to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, states: “RE: Implementation of the 35% and 23.5% salary increment for staff of tertiary institutions. I refer to your letter No. FME/ IS/UNI/ASUU/C.I/IT?/90 dated 8th September 2023 in respect of the above-subject. Find attached the circulars pertaining to the four salary structures in the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education for your information (attached).

“The 23.5% earlier reflected in our letter SWC/S/04/S.149/I/59 of 28 July 2022 and stated in paragraph 2 of your letter, has been increased to 25% which accounted for the increased cost implications. This Commission is really pleased with the success your informal discussions have achieved. We shall endeavour to support all your efforts aimed at repositioning the education sector. Please accept the assurances of my warm regards.”

Following this, the commission proceeded to issue a circular also dated September

14, 2023 and addressed to the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation among others informing them of the implementation of the newly reviewed salaries.

The circular reads, “ The Presidential Committee on Salaries at its 13th meeting having taken into consideration the various stages of collective bargaining in various sectors, and specifically engagements between the Federal Ministry

of Education and Tertiary Institutions-based Unions, and consequent upon the federal government’s approval, as well as 2023 budgetary provisions, approval is hereby conveyed for the revision of the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Salary Structure for academic staff of Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, with effect from 1st January 2023.”

Also, a letter from the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation dated September 21, 2023 confirmed the increment.

The letter which was signed on behalf of the Director, Human Resource of the office, Ajanaku F.O, reads, “I am directed to inform you that the Presidential Committee on Salaries at its 13th meeting having taken into consideration the different stages of collective bargaining in various sectors and specifically engagements between the Federal Ministry of Education and Tertiary Institutions-based Unions and consequently the federal government’s approval, is hereby conveyed as revised for the following:-

NCAA Suspends Non-licensed Oil Marketers, Bars them from Operating Chinedu Eze Few months after the major incident of contaminated aviation fuel involving one of the domestic carriers, Max Air, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended all non-licensed oil markets and others with expired license from operating and fuelling aircraft at any of the nation’s airports.

Series of meetings were held between the NCAA and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) over the incident with a review and scrutiny of the existing marketers that supply aviation fuel to the airports and at the end, the regulatory authority decided to suspend those who did not meet the standards and certification.

The NCAA announced the suspension at the inauguration of the joint NCAA Audit Committee of all Aviation Fuel Activities in Nigeria The Director General of NCAA, Captain Musa Nuhu, said that the detection of non licensed

aircraft fuellers and expired license holders was achieved in collaboration with NMDPRA. Nuhu who was represented by Director, Operations, Licensing and Training Standards, Capt.

Ibrahim Bello Dambazau, said: “This collaboration with NMPDRA has yielded positive results so far. The collaboration has led to the identification of all non licensed fuellers and those with expired licenses. That has led to suspension of all their activities in the airport in Nigeria.”

He also said an All Operators Letter (AOL) has been issued mandating operators to comply with all requirements for fuelling as approved, stressing that the NCAA has heightened surveillance to ensure complete and full compliance.

According to him, the recent fuel contamination incidents, particularly of Max Air, has generated attention even beyond the country.

“This has created negative publicity in the industry and a level of fear amongst the public, which is justified,” he said.

The affected people have therefore called on the Delta State and federal governments as well as good-spirited individuals to urgently come to their aid as their land has been practically swallowed up by flood and life practically brought to a standstill with excessive rainfall in the area in the last couple of weeks.

The community also appealed for support from several international oil companies operating in the community, to ameliorate the harsh effects of the flooding, which has brought both social and economic in the area to a halt.

The unprecedented flood burden was more than the people of the community could shoulder alone, they lamented.

Taking journalists on tour of the flooded community during the week, the leadership and elders of Polobubo (Tsekelewu) community noted that the overwhelming level of the ecological disaster has made “an urgent appeal to the state and federal governments inevitable.”

THISDAY observed that the situation was truly pathetic and devastating with both elementary

and secondary schools in the area having been forced to go on indefinite break due to the ocean of flood in the community.

Some residents, including women and children and the elderly, who were apparently clinging to hope of some intervention, were seen around the few buildings yet to be completely submerged by the flood, looking forlorn and anxiety-stricken.

A statement by Dr. Bright Abulu, President General of Polobubo (Tsekelewu) Community and Sir Chris Ukagha, the Public Relations Officer, underscored the seriousness of the situation, and helplessness of the generally agrarian and fishing population.

The statement calling for urgent assistance read in part:

“It is the worst in the history of our community! We have lost practically everything to this flood.

Unquantifiable property had been lost and people displaced from their houses and places of livelihood.

“The entire community is submerged and we can see only some rooftops. We had severe flooding in 2012 but the experience was not as harrowing as this. The flood has completely taken over and all we can see and feel now is untold hardship and hunger staring us in the face.

Everyone is affected by this disaster. You, our friends from the media, can see for yourself; words are inadequate to describe the situation in our community today.

Tribunal Affirms Mutfwang’s Election as Plateau Governor Seriki Adinoyi in Jos Plateau State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Jos has affirmed the election of Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the duly elected governor of the state, dismissing the petition filed by Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda and his All Progressives Congress (APC) as “a wild goose chase.”

Delivering the judgement yesterday, a three-man tribunal led

by Justice Sunday Olorundahunsi unanimously affirmed Mutfwang’s election, noting that despite the wild allegations by petitioners, there was no evidence to show that the election was not lawfully held as petitioners failed to tender

another result to contest the one declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The tribunal also said that the PDP has a valid structure in the state, noting that the APC has admitted in its petition that the PDP repeated its congress.

Justice Olorundahunsi said that “what is admitted needs no further proof the APC has admitted in its petition that the PDP repeated its congress.”

The tribunal is of the view that the PDP conducted a repeat congress in 2021, and therefore has a solid structure.

It however held that it (the tribunal) lacks jurisdiction to entertain the petitioners’

challenge of the repeated congresses by the PDP as they (petitioners) are busybodies and meddlesome interlopers as they do not have business with PDP congress.

“No matter how dissatisfied another party feels on the conduct of another party’s primaries, it must keep mum as it is not a member of that party. Such a person (party) therefore, lacks the locus standi to challenge such a congress or primary election,” the tribunal ruled.

Justice Olorundahunsi also observed that there were so many errors and inconsistencies by the petitioners’ expert witness under cross-examination that “even a

Primary 6 pupil would do better in his basic arithmetic”, and such errors and inconsistencies are signals for the tribunal to take the evidence of the witness with a pinch of salt and to treat him with caution.

He said, “The petitioners also presented a witness who admitted she was a polling unit agent, but admitted under cross-examination in the case of Jos North that the signature on the polling unit result is not hers. The evidence is thereby expunged by the tribunal.”

The tribunal ruled that it had no basis to nullify the election, seeing that the petition “is a wild goose chase and is bound to fail.

The petition is hereby dismissed.”

“This monumental transaction by Governor Peter Mbah will not only bring efficient transportation but will also move Enugu close to its industrialisation goal,” the commissioner added.

While speaking on the economic impact on the lives of the people, Ozor insisted that the investments would enable thousands of jobs for the residents, create skills through the plant assembly and “save over 3,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum”.

Agoro Heads Lagos Civil Service Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appointed Mr. Bode Agoro as the 22nd Head of Civil Service of the state.

2023 Kogi Guber Election’ll be Most Peaceful Ever, Says Gov Bello Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, yesterday, assured the people of Kogi State, and Nigerians in general, that the governorship election billed for November 11, 2023, would be the most peaceful ever held in the state.

“Ododo and I may come from the same place but we do not share any blood relationship whatsoever. Do your findings.

He is a very compassionate, hardworking and competent fellow and those qualities spoke for him at the primaries,” he added.

Bello explained that part of his administration’s focus was to do away with ethnic sentiments that had set the state backwards before his emergence.

“Ethnic sentiments set Kogi back for 19 years and we must break away from that for com-

petence. My administration has changed the narrative of ethnicity and has been appointing and working with competent people as against choosing people from tribes in the state.

“We raise people from different backgrounds, irrespective of their senatorial zones,” he added.

Earlier, the Kogi Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, said no blood would be shed because of an election.

Fanwo said that security remained key to the state and therefore the government would not be distracted from the path of peace.

Witch Persecution and Reintegration of Victims in Benue

of Pa. Kyado’s kindred expressed displeasure over the attack on Pa. Kyado. However, he pleaded that the family of Pa Kyadoo, AfAW, and their supporters, should withdraw the case as the perpetrators and their families were ready to adhere to any safety condition for the victim. In turn, AfAW’s Benue Director insisted that all the community members must refrain from all accusations. The kindred heads agreed and promised to end witch accusations and persecution in their community. Also, the head of every family in the community promised to abide by the resolution. As their tradition demands, the Benue AfAW Director handed Pa. Kyado to the local chief, Zaki Akende Tagher who in turn, handed him to the head of the kindreds, and then to the elders of his family. While handing Pa Justin over to the elders, Zaki Akende Tagher said, “Wanwene ka orya, ka orbatsav ga” meaning “Your son is an elder, not a witch”. This process creates a chain of care, responsibility and accountability for the victim’s safety and life”.

Pa Kyadoo’s return provided an opportunity for some community outreach. AfAW’s advocates addressed community members, especially the youths. One advocate told the youths that old age did not make a person a witch; that old people were not witches. He said: “If people are sick, consult medical doctors, do not consult local diviners, do not suspect or attack old family members.

The sad reality in our national life today is the fact that we have become like Humpty Dumpty.

We have learnt to sit on the wall as regards our issues. We conveniently play the pick and choose game. We forget that a nefarious fire, not stopped will consume everyone.

In recent times, I have seen elders lose respect quickly; they have become tasteless. Their own fine wine didn’t get better with age. In the quest for money the political class gives, a lot of people forget reason.

In fact, reason has become unreasonable. Reason is now based on the unreasonable. Logic has now become illogical. As long as illogicality fits the narrative of who pays your piper, no problem.

We have become like early men again.

We have gone back in time like Neanderthals.

Our political narratives have now become ethnic bile, we don’t speak to heal each other again.

As long as division favors our narrative, we divide.

We forget that the politicians we kill for don’t really care about us, all they do is to use us. It is when politics starts, they remind us we are divided. After they get the vote, they call for peace.

But families will never remain the same.

Like Michael Jackson says, we have all been hit by smooth criminals.

But we must be able to speak the truth. We must be able to shun evil and let reason prevail. We must stop seating on the wall on issues. We must remember Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall. In the end he had a great fall.

a Justin Kyado, a 90-year-old man, was accused of witchcraft last year. Some mob abducted him in the middle of the night, beat him up, and set him ablaze.

Kyado survived and on September 9, returned to his community in the company of advocates from Benue State. In his report, the AfAW director in the state, Dooyum Ingye, said, “Last year, the Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) took up the case of Pa. Justin Kyado who was accused of witchcraft. He was severely burnt by some family and community members. ȱ ȱ ǯȱ ¢ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ĵ ȱ and also facilitated the arrest and trial of his persecutors. As a post-intervention policy, AfAW continued to monitor Pa Kyado’s progress. Pa Kyado has been staying with his daughter ȱ ȱ Ĵ Ȅǯ A year after the attack, Kyado with the help of AfAW returned to his village, Tse Agena, Mbavur, Mbadzoho Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State. His return is AfAW’s first case of reintegration since it was founded in 2020. Advocates seized the opportunity to engage community members, especially the youths on the illegality of witch persecution and the need to adopt a scientific approach to explaining incidents of death or illness. As a tradition, people consult local diviners when people fall ill or pass away. These diviners point accusing fingers on relatives. The accused are brutally attacked or murdered. Those who attack or murder alleged witches are seldom arrested or prosecuted. In the case of Kyado, it was different.

Since some suspects were arrested and charged in court, relatives have been pressuring Pa Kyado’s family to withdraw the case so that they could settle out of court. They asked Kyado to return to the community and pledged not to harm him or engage in witchcraft accusations or persecutions. Our AfAW director in Benue reported what happened. “AfAW advocates arrived Pa. Kyado’s hometown by 11:40 a.m., 9th September 2023. Pa. Kyado’s family and community members were already gathered at the family compound waiting. Terhemba Kyado, Pa. Justin’s younger son, welcomed and introduced everyone present. Thereafter, the local chief Zaki Akende Tagher introduced the AfAW advocates and the purpose of their visit to the community. Previously, the local chief’s attempt to get the perpetrators bailed was rejected by the court. The rejection was premised on the brutal assault on Pa. Kyado, insensitivity to his condition, and the constant threat on the life of his daughter, who was nursing him and working with AfAW to ensure that justice is done.

Pa. Kyado’s family and their lawyer argued that they should be granted bail on the condition they agreed not to harm Pa. Kyado or any member of his family”.

Archbishop Kwashi Bows Out Omoleye Olabode

T

he Most Rev. Benjamin Argak Kwashi was for many checkered years the Bishop of the Diocese of Jos and the Archbishop Emeritus of the Ecclesiastical Province of Jos Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion. Born in a village called Amper in Plateau State to a Christian family, Bishop Kwashi retires after an accomplished, humanitarian, and colourful life as a cleric. This writeup about the life of the humanist and cleric In the early hours of Friday morning of 23rd September 1955 Pa and Mrs Kwashi, a CMS teacher were blessed with a son at what became the first hospital in Northern Nigeria. Doctor Fox set it up, and died; but it continued for some years after his death, between 1916 and 1921. And like every other parent, their joy knew no bounds and the son was christened Benjamin Argak Kwasi.

The baby boy grew up like any other little boy of that era. He met his father in the days when he had a government Land Rover attached to him. In about 1960, he realised that the young Kwashi needed an education, so he was sent to the village by his grandmother and grandfather and was there for about two years before he started primary school.

Those two years became the most remarkable years that he would live to remember in all life. One could say that priesthood runs in the family as his grandfather on my mother’s side was also a priest and the first Anglican Catechist in 1919, in Kabuye.

In one of his numerous interviews, Archbishop Kwashi spoke about his growing up. He said, “While at the village, I towed the bell, because Angers people were like the current Fulani people. We had cows, sheep, and goats so, I had to go shepherding with other kids. It was an experience because I came to the village with my canvas shoes, clothes, and so on but my grandma didn’t accept my dress because everyone else walked around naked. So, the first few weeks were war, but eventually, I had to be like other kids who ran after cows, drank milk from the goats, and ate whatever was available.

No sensible lizard came around our path, because that was our lunch. We ate only after we had come back in the evening with the animals.

“Then, my dad came to take me back from my grandparents’ house to put me in primary school and I finally finished St. Luke’s Primary School in Jos in 1969, after which I went to Military School in 1970 and was in the set of 1970-1974.

Then, I joined the Army and when I got the call from God, I applied for a discharge and I was discharged from Supply and Transport in Ojo Barracks, Lagos. After Bishop Ogboyemi examined me, he sent me for training in TCNN; then, my life began as a rural evangelist, which was my original call, and by 1982, I was ordained.

“In 1991, I was made a Canon and an Archdeacon and in 1992 I was made a Bishop in Jos. My life has continued since then and here I am today.”

This may be a double coincidence for Kwashi, as he marks his 67th birthday and retirement as a Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Jos after 31 years of Episcopal service in the Lord’s vineyard in Jos and the Christian community in Nigeria. Even though in serving God, there is no retirement. It is for Episcopal retreat to take the seat and play the role of a spiritual leader. It is a great privilege, and honour to know

you right from when I was a child as a Bishop and Archbishop in the Anglican communion.

I may not have dislocated and separated my worship in the different churches and Dioceses in the past 40 years. The charismatic and assertive messages I have learned as a Christian have come from your pulpit as well, Others have confirmed it in your diocese, or our denomination has excelled, followed, and practiced Christianity the way it should be even convincing and winning souls of non-Christians amongst us to follow the way of true love as exemplified by Christ and practiced by you.

I also remember during my confirmation at St. Luke’s Cathedral, I left with a song that is always dear to me, ‘O Jesus I have promised to serve thee to the end.

Be thou forever near me my master and

my friend.’

Your knowledge-driven contributions to constituted authorities in your Episcopal years to date are very frank, assertive, and essential. Assertively, today, there is no perfect being on earth even strongest your critics have accepted their faith because fate played its part. Your continuous insistence on things being done right in all spheres of life and service to God vis a vis success has changed many lives.

More so, your contribution to the growth of many churches, Archdeaconry, Dioceses, Bishops, and the many children you and your supportive wife Gloria adopted cannot be forgotten easily.

As you retire as an Emeritus Arch Bishop leaving behind a Diocese,

Arch Dioceses, you have grown to be known internationally with your messages and influence over the years.

There is no way today you can talk about the Nigerian Anglican communion without mentioning this great servant of God including other denominations. We do not doubt that you are leaving a big shoe behind for someone who must spend another 31 years to fill because in every centenary there are special people God naturally bestowed grace upon.

From 2008 till your retirement, having been consecrated by the former Primate of the Anglican communion Arch Bishop Abiodun Adetiloye in 1992, you have indeed served faithfully to the admiration of peace-loving Nigerians.

However, we must also thank God for His protection over you and your family from different attempts on your life.

For the Olabode’s as a family, we are happy and proud of you. We continue to pray for more grace, good health, and longevity. In your episcopal years.

You have covered Plateau with your messages of love, tolerance, and forgiveness even when provoked. Again, with the creation of new Dioceses, we were praying for you to be a Primate of the Anglican Communion Nigeria, but as God will have it, it wasn’t possible.

I am however convinced that your intellectual contributions over the years have been effective in the communion. I am also convinced that the Anglican Communion, Plateau State, Nigeria, Africa, and the world are proud to have one of the most powerful preachers of the word of God in the Most Revd. Kwashi.

Interestingly, your son is also a priest and learning the ropes, while your younger brother Jacob Kwashi is the Bishop of Zonkwa, we pray that you continue to guide and encourage them to keep the family line of Christianity waxing stronger.

More so, with many children who are so special to you and Mama Gloria, living with your family in Jos and being adequately taken care of, God will continue to guide and protect you as you age gracefully.

Kwashi was the General Secretary of GAFCON in 2019. He became the third Bishop of the newly created Anglican Diocese of Jos in 1992, and in 2008, he was consecrated Archbishop of Jos Province in the Church of Nigeria.

He is the author of several books such as Evangelism and Mission: Biblical and Strategic Insights for the Church Today.

He is married to Gloria and they have six biological children, one of whom is also a priest. They have over 50 other children (orphans) adopted and living with the family in Jos, and another 470 at their school. He is stepping aside after 31 years of meritorious service.

Kwasi was also a Rector of the Theological College and a Vicariate in 1987 when his church was completely burned during the Muslim riots but rose to become the first Anglican Bishop of Jos Diocese in 1992 and conferred with the national honor as an Officer of the Order of the Niger and enthroned Archbishop of Jos Province in 2008 and reelected for a second term on the 19th January 2013, equally leading the Anglican realignment of GAFCON which started in Nairobi Kenya on the 21st of October 2013.

As the General Secretary of GAFCON since 2019, this is another plus that will keep him busy having published several books in Evangelism and Mission and Neither Bomb nor Bullet amongst others.

overs of choral and classical music will keep a date at All Saints’ Anglican Church, Yaba on Sunday afternoon when the annual 3-Cathedral Choirs Festival takes place there. It is a day when the three Anglican cathedrals in metropolitan Lagos—the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina; Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, Ikeja; and the Cathedral Church of St. Jude, Ebute Meta—will perform individual and joint musical pieces to the delight of music lovers.

Each choir in rotation hosts and organises the programme annually. Whilst St. Jude’s Choir in the Diocese of Lagos Mainland is the host this year, last year, AVMCC, Ikeja in the Diocese of Lagos was the host. Next year, the choral festival will move to Marina in the Diocese of Lagos.

The idea of the annual festival originated in England in the 18th century when the Cathedral Choirs of Hereford, Gloucester, and Worcester held the first festival. It has since caught on in such places as England, Canada, the U.S.A., and Nigeria in the quest to maintain the highest standards of choral music in leading and energising congregational worship, deepening faith formation, glorifying God, and edifying his church.

Led by their individual Masters of the Music, the three cathedral choirs will perform soul-lifting musical pieces ranging from such classics as G. F. Handel’s “Exceeding glad shall we be” and “The King shall rejoice in thy strength” to C.H.H. Perry’s “O Praise ye the Lord”, Ayo Bankole’s “O seun fun mi o”, Vaughan William’s “Te Deum in G-R”, and John Rutter’s “Psalm 150”.

A statement issued by Mr. Lanre Idowu, spokesman of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland describes the festival as an opportunity to enjoy “the best of choral music available in our country which will feature disciplined rendition of music where all the different choral voices—soprano, alto, tenor, and bass—are woven into a harmonious whole.”

Hisdeathhasraisedconcernsacrossthenation as many believed he was killed.

MohBad’s death is unarguably controversial, fully deserving of the outrage it has generated considering the circumstances surrounding his demiseonSeptember12,2023.Understandably, there’s been massive outcry. His fans, friends, colleagues, and influencers, well-meaning Nigerians and sympathisers have called for a proper investigation to ascertain the cause of his death.

Achainofprotestsfollowedmajorlyacrossthe South-weststatesofOgun,Oyo,Ondo,Ekiti,and LagoslastTuesday.SameinsomeSouth-south states, all demanding justice for the late singer.

LikeinOgun,theprotestersstormedAbeokuta, and through some other locations in the state capital, to protest his demise.

Theyouthswhoworeblackattiresconvergedin theirnumbersinAbeokutacarryingplacardswith inscriptions like #Justice For Mohbad, #Justice for Mohbad, #Who off Light, among others. In the same vein, youths gathered in Warri, Delta StatelastTuesday,todemandjusticeforMohbad, fondly called ‘Imole’. It follows similar protests and an outpouring of grief in other cities across southernNigeria,likeinBeninCity,theEdoState capital and beyond.

Videos and pictures of the protests in Kenya’s capital,Nairobi,andinLondon,circulatedonline generating countless posts with comments on socialmedia,andthehashtag#JusticeForMohbad trending all week. In Lagos, some youths defied

A planned protest by some Nollywood actors and fansinhonourofMohbad,wasearliercancelledlast minute following an appeal from the Lagos State government concerning safety, fears it could be hijacked by hoodlums.

Theprotest,originallyscheduledtotakeplacelast Wednesday, was intended to run from Oba Akran Road in Ikeja to the Governor’s office in Alausa. But someyouthswhowerenothappyaboutthedevelopmentstagedaprotestinIkejatodemandjusticefor the music star, whose death is under investigation.

Theyouthswereseenarmedwithplacards,bearing various inscriptions like: “Justice for Mohbad”, “RIP Mohbad, IMole.”

Also,youthsfloodedsomeareasinIkorodu,Lagos to protest Mohbad’s death, seeking justice for the Ikorodu born star. In Akure, the Ondo state capital, protesters took to the streets in their numbers, in honour of the singer chanting “Justice for Mohbad”.

Some carrying placards with inscriptions such as “SayNotoMarlianMusic”,“JusticeforMohbad”,and “We want a coroner’s inquest into Mohbad death, among others.

Recall there have been allegations of several assaultsonMohbadbyNairaMarleyandhiscrew.

Mohbad,onJune27,2023,filedapetitioncaptioned “Petition of threat to life, malicious damage of properties valued the sum of five-million-naira, assaultoccasioningharm,oppressionandconduct likely to cause breach of peace” against one Sam Larry and Oba Elegushi of Eti-Osa, Lagos State.

However, the police failed to act decisively on the petition.

Meanwhile, Splash FM 105.5, a radio station in Ibadan, Oyo State, has blacklisted the songs of NairaMarley.Thebanwassaidtobeindefiniteon the songs of the Marlian Records. “To this effect, Naira Marley’s songs have become NTBB (not to bebroadcast)onourstationtillfurthernotice.This is with immediate effect. Thank you.”

A radio station, Fresh FM 106.9 FM, Ado in EkitiState,alsobannedthesongsofNairaMarley from airing on the station till further notice. The radio station disclosed this in a post shared on its Instagram handle (@freshfm1069adoekiti) and signed by its Head of production and Music Content, Oluwaseunfunmi Williams.

Also, another private radio station in Ibadan, Agidigbo FM, has banned playing of the artiste’s songforthesamereason.OtherswereVoiceFm, 89.9,alsoinAdo-Ekiti,NewCruse,92.6Fmlocatedin Ikere-Ekiti.Themanagementsoftheradiostations appearedunanimousintheirdecisionswhichwere afalloutofthedeathoftheafrostreet-popartiste.

This came as Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of LagosState,directedthestatePoliceCommand, in collaboration with the Department of State Services, DSS, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the music star. Also, concerned residents, particularly youths urged the relevant authorities to ensure justice for the bereaved family and the deceased.

GovernorSanwo-Olu,calledforathoroughprobe into the circumstances surrounding the death of MohBad. Sanwo-Olu, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso,sympathizedwiththebereavedfamily, friends, fans and residents over the unfortunate demise of the rising music star.

The statement reads: “The Lagos State Government has noted the developments that have followed the death of music star Ilerioluwa OladimejiAloba(akaMohBad).“TheGovernment commiserates with his family and fans. We feel

TTSWG Empowers Talents in Tech, Unveils Challenge Experts have stressed timely support and funding for young talents in the technology sector to drive growth and sustainable innovations.

Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Climate Innovation Centre (NCIC), Bankole Oloruntoba declared this in Lagos recently, at a press conference announcing 2023 Innovation Makers’ Challenge (IMC), an initiative of Telecommunication and Technology Sustainability Working Group (TTSWG).

According to him, lack of support for ideas at their early stage had denied the country a number of invaluable breakthrough and innovations.

Oloruntoba who bragged about Nigeria’s capabilities and inventiveness, noted that a timely intervention and support for ideas will give young ones a competitive edge that will drive positive narratives in the country.

He said the challenge is targeted at young innovators between ages 18 - 35 who are expected to showcase their original technology-driven ideas

“Interested participants are expected to submit 90-second video pitch of their innovation via a designated website and answer accompanying questions between September 11 and October.

Thereafter, 20 finalists will be invited to participate in innovators’ boot camp where they will be guided and mentored by experts to improve their ideas”.

Uwaje added that outstanding innovators will later pitch their ideas to a panel of judges to compete for a cash prize of N2,000,000, N1,000,000, and N500,000 at TTSWG innovators conference in

November.

Governments at different levels have been advised to double their efforts at enabling an investment-friendly tax environment in its quest for improved revenue generation.

Ogun Cult Clashes and Gov Abiodun’s Proactive Approach Olaniyi Ajibola

L

ike many other climes around the world, with the continuous erosion of social order and societal values, Ogun State has its fair share of the menace, especially issues revolving around cultism, which had terribly permeated the fabric of every society. At first, the outlawed groups were domiciled at the campuses of various higher institutions of learning across the State, with attendant killings and maiming of high magnitude, thereby making residents of the State to live in palpable fear and agony.

Unfortunately, these gangsters moved their base from the citadel of learning straight into the streets, as urchins and unlettered became new recruits and continued to wreck havocs in all the communities of the Gateway State, and towns like Sagamu, Ota, Owode and the rest became hotbeds for dangerous cultists.

This ugly trend remained unabatedly terrible when the incumbent Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun took the mantle of leadership of the State in 2019. Abiodun, a cool, calm and collected personality, with a background of thoroughness and pragmatism; exhibited the character of an astute administrator and a thought leader.

Upon his assumption, he deployed all the security apparatus in the State to monitor the security architecture and activated high level security team to dislodge cultists from their hideouts and make them to face the full wrath of the law, as he vowed to demolish buildings where cultists were found to be hibernating. Identifying illicit drugs and proliferation of small arms and light weapons as basic underlining factors of cultism in the State, the Governor gave a marching order to security agencies to clear the state of those substances and illegal weapons.

This renewed vigour of Dapo Abiodun-led administration drastically changed the security architecture of the State and speedily restored decency on the streets; to the level in which there was no single incident of politically motivated killings from 2019 till date, unlike the case in the last two decades. Of course, the bloody cult clashes in Sagamu area of the State last week it was of a great concern for critical stakeholders across the State.

Meanwhile, in his usual response to issues revolving around security, Abiodun swiftly moved to curtail the situation and immediately directed security agencies in the State to rid Sagamu and its environs of the menace of cultists and cult-related activities in the wake of renewed clashes among rival cult gangs in the town. Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, the Governor regretted the avoidable loss of innocent lives and wanton destruction of properties by the hoodlums.

He reiterated the state government’s zero tolerance to acts of brigandage and lawlessness, saying: “ As a responsible and responsive government, we are very sad with the resurgence of activities of criminal elements under different outlawed groups, raising unnecessary tension in the sleepy

Abiodun town of Sagamu and it’s environs.

Truly to his words, and within 24 hours of making the assertion, the police in the State confirmed the arrest of nine suspects at a press briefing addressed by the Commissioner of Police in the State, Abiodun Alamutu.

The Commissioner, while explaining the remote cause of the mayhem, said:” A land was sold and some form of commission or settlement was paid to a cult group by the owner of the land. A rival cult group got to know about the payment and went after members of the other group in a bid to get a share of the commission.

“The situation degenerated into an attack and counter attack situation which started from Wednesday las week and continued till Sunday, leading to the death of 8 persons and about nine suspects have been arrested as we speak with evidences of their involvement in the killings. Two guns and some rounds of cartridges with evidences that they were recently fired, were recovered from the suspects”.

In a follow-up to the arrest and to create room for total control of the security architecture of the area, the government announced restriction of human and vehicular movement from 7pm to 6am.

The Governor went further to propose a law that would pronounce death penalty on anyone caught engaging in cult activities in the state during a meeting with the Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, and his chiefs at his palace in Sagamu.

Abiodun, emphatically states,” We will leave no stone

unturned in ensuring that we bring any person directly, indirectly or remotely responsible for these occurrences to book.

I have discussed with the Attorney General, and it is well within my powers as the governor of this State to pronounce the death penalty on people and we are going to ensure that we enact that because when people appreciate and understand the consequences of their behaviours, perhaps they will begin to have a rethink.

“I have called on the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the State Service (DSS), the Commander of the Civil Defence, our AMOTEKUN Commander and all our security architecture to relocate to Sagamu for this purpose. We will rely on our kabiyesis because they are the closest to the grassroots, for all the intelligence support because these people are not spirits. They live within us, they are tenants in our houses.

“The last time I came here, I said any house that we arrest anybody that is connected to either cultism or kidnapping, we will find out where they live and demolish that house. And sadly, it has been very difficult for me to implement because they rent an apartment and the unsuspecting landlords who don’t know what they do give their houses to them and after we arrest them and about to demolish the house, those landlords will come and beg us that they did not know the suspects were into that business.

“I am now pronouncing that we will no longer refer to these people as cultists or any other name. We are pronouncing them as murderers and we will mete out punishments that are deserving to murderers”.

Also, the Governor moved to establish special court to try cult-related cases and a Joint Anti-Cultism Security Task Force comprising all major security outfits, with the mandate to rid the state of the menace of cultism, as well as an amnesty programme for would-be cultists who may wish to surrender their weapons.

These decisions were arrived at after a joint security meeting, held at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Ogun State on Wednesday.

In truth and indeed, Governor Abiodun has redefined responsive governance and purposeful leadership in the state in the manner he addressed the recent security breach by those unscrupulous individuals marauding under different outlawed groups.

Abiodun’s decisive approach to protect the people and guarantee their welfare in line with the dictates of the 1999 constitution, precisely in section 14 sub-section 2b had given clear-cut direction to the people of the State to collectively fight a common enemy. His proactive approach and prompt response to security of lives and property of the people should be commended and applauded; it is indeed worthy of emulation by his contemporaries in power.

By the turn of events, it is crystal clear that the people are ready to take their destinies in their hands and cooperate with the government to put an end to this social vice and institutionalize sustainable peace; the tempo of action must be sustained to build an egalitarian society we all desired.

Oil Theft and a Dialogue with Socrates Austin Tam-George Nigerian: Dear Socrates, my country is troubled on many fronts. You’re a man of great, ancient wisdom. I’ve come to you for answers, Sir. Please help us.

Socrates: Well, I don’t always have potted answers to hand out. But through a simple method I’ve used for many years, people tend to find the solutions to their problems by themselves, rather than depend on others. Philosophers call my approach the ‘’Socratic method’’. But it’s actually just a series of critical conversations.

Nigerian: Wow! A conversation? This sounds interesting.

So how do we start?

Socrates: We start with you stating the particular problem.

I’ll ask you a series of questions, and then we go from there.

Ready?

Nigerian: Yes. Here is the problem: there seems to be no end to the dismal news coming from the oil and gas sector in my country. Oil theft is perhaps the biggest problem now.

Production volumes are down, and revenue to the nation is falling. It’s the same story for gas. What do we do?

Socrates: That’s awful. Who exactly are these oil and gas thieves?

Nigerian: Well, we’ve seen quite a few ruffians in the Niger Delta region, bursting pipes. They steal oil, refine it in the bush, and sell in miserable jerry cans for pennies. It’s a mess.

The country is..

Socrates: (interrupts) Wait a second. How much oil is lost?

I mean, what’s the official estimate of oil lost daily due to the activities of these ruffians?

Nigerian: The last figure I have seen in the press is as high as five hundred thousand barrels of oil stolen per day by these guys.

Socrates: Well, that sounds way more than what a few ruffians can handle daily in any bush and sell in Jerry cans.

Could there be more going on? Do you have a Petroleum Ministry?

Nigerian: Yes, we have a Petroleum Ministry.

Socrates: Good. Do you also have a regulatory agency that oversees the operations of the industry?

Nigerian: Yes. In fact, we have regulatory agencies for the upstream, midstream, and downstream aspects of the industry, Sir. Socrates: Interesting. Yet, somehow, 500,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen under the watch of these regulatory agencies of government?

Nigerian: Yes, that is part of the riddle, Sir, and we must try to get to the root of this problem.

Socrates: Great. Now, oil and gas exploration is a highly technical business. Do you agree?

Nigerian: Yes, I definitely agree.

Socrates: Good. This means that those who oversee the industry must themselves have dynamic technical insight into the operations of the industry and the tools to monitor the sector. Do you agree?

Nigerian: Yes, that’s a sensible standard to expect in any regulatory agency.

Socrates: Good. So, do you have an effective technical mechanism for tracking every drop of oil officially lifted and piped out of the country daily?

Nigerian: Well, I’m not sure, to be honest. Only the Petroleum Minister can answer that.

Socrates: You’re not sure? How then do you know when oil-exporting companies declare far less t h a n what t hey act ually pipe out of y our count ry ?

Nig erian: Well, t he oil and g as companies a re among t hose screaming ab out oil and g as t h ef t .

Socrat es: No, t hat ’s not t he point .The point is that your country must have automated tools to independently verify every oil or gas taken out of your reserves. This will greatly enhance transparency and accountability in the sector. Do you agree?

Nigerian: Yes, I totally agree. And I can now see that

without an effective automated oversight, everyone is basically a suspect. But is automation the only solution, Socrates?

Socrates: Well, even the best automation will have to be supported by human character. Do you agree?

Nigerian: I don’t quite understand, Socrates. What do you mean?

Socrates: Ok. Let’s look at it this way: oil exploration is a very lucrative business. Do you agree?

Nigerian: Absolutely. I agree.

Socrates: This means that those who oversee all aspects of this business, including the technical verification process, must be of incorruptible character. Do you agree?

Nigerian: Oh, Socrates, I agree!

Socrates: Even the best automation cannot take the place of human character. So, everyone - from the Petroleum Ministry, the security agencies, the regulatory bodies - must be of incorruptible character in order to stop oil theft. Do you agree?

NIGERIAN: I totally agree, Socrates!

Socrates: Is that the case in your country?

Nigerian: Oh, Socrates! All we’ve heard are allegations and counter-allegations of corruption and collusion among those who should be protecting the nation’s resources.

Socrates: i see. Has any major culprit been convicted in your courts to serve as a strong message to other oil thieves?

Nigerian: Oh, Socrates, I feel exhausted now. I can’t breathe!

Socrates: Has the petroleum minister been fired for watching over such massive oil theft?

Nigerian: Oh, Socrates!

In the past 8 years, during the peak of the crisis, the petroleum minister was also the President of the country.

aiwo Awoniyi has been in phenomenal form recently, and it was his late goals rally that kept Nottingham Forest in the Premier League; just continuing from where he left off since the beginning of the season.

For the ninth consecutive game in the Premier League, Taiwo Awoniyi registered a goal contribution as Nottingham Forest came from behind on Monday night to draw 1-1, with Burnley at the City Ground.

Zeki Amdouni broke the deadlock for the Clarets four minutes before halftime when he slotted home from 20 yards, before Callum Hudson-Odoi leveled matters with a wonderful goal in the 61st minute on his debut for Nottingham Forest.

The Cobham product, a Fifa U17 World Cup winner with the Young Lions in 2017, curled the ball in off the right-hand post after he was teed up by Nigeria’s 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup winner Taiwo Awoniyi.

Liverpool legend Michael Owen has praised Awoniyi for the part he played in Hudson-Odoi stunning equalizer and highlighted that the Nigerian did well to keep play alive.

Speaking on Premier League Productions post-match, Owen remarked: “He had an impression on the game, he got brought off later on but this was a fantastic goal.

“Awoniyi does well there, strong, chests

it down, lays it off, and then HudsonOdoi does the rest.”

Only Egypt international Mohamed Salah has registered more goal involvements (13) than Awoniyi (11) in the Premier League since the start of May 2023.

What is clear is that Awoniyi is becoming the real deal at Nottingham Forest Awoniyi has picked up from where he left off last season, scoring in seven consecutive games and since the start of May, the Forest striker has even outscored Erling Haaland in the Premier League, despite playing a game fewer.

Having recorded an assist against the newly promoted side, Awoniyi has now scored or assisted in nine consecutive Premier League games dating back to his brace versus Southampton on matchday 35 in the 2022-2023 season.

It is also interesting to know that with just five games into the season, the former Liverpool forward has surpassed his assist tally for last season.

While previewing the Forest versus Burley Monday night’s clash, BBC Sport columnist, Chris Sutton, heaped praises in the Nigeria international saying: “They have got a bit more nous about them and although they will miss Brennan Johnson after his move to Tottenham, Taiwo Awoniyi is absolutely flying at the moment.”

Awoniyi has started the 2023/24 campaign in some style. He’s scored in three

of the four Premier League games and he’s starting to really kick on in England.

At 26-years-old there is plenty more to come from the Nigerian. He scored 11 goals last season and finished the campaign as the leading goalscorer within the Forest squad.

Sutton said in his BBC Sport column: “This time, I’m expecting Steve Cooper’s side to come out on top.

Turning the City Ground into a fortress is a must again this season and hopefully, they can claim a win.

Awoniyi is a certain starter for Forest.

He’s one of the most in-form strikers in the Premier League and has already scored three goals during the current campaign.

The Nigerian is starting to prove his worth. He’s the number one striker at the club right now and on his day he’s capable of causing absolute carnage to defenders.

Indeed, Nottingham Forest coach has urged the Super Eagles striker to continue scoring goals for the team.

Cooper has been impressed with Awoniyi’s form, and he has praised for former Union Berlin man. Nonetheless, he wants the Nigerian to continue churning out the goals.

“You always want your striker to be scoring goals, and he’s got more than a few this week,” Cooper had said on Nottingham Post.

“He’s missed most of the second part

of last season, and he got injured at a time when he was doing what he did today.

“Although he’s got his goals back since he’s come back he’s played really well. But obviously, you want your number nine to be scoring goals.

“We’ve been really happy with T. He showed a great attitude and commitment to getting back in the way he did.

“He hit the ground running as soon as we got him back on the pitch. Now he’s turning good performances into good performances with goals.

“That’s what you want and what you need from your strikers. Let’s hope he can carry on for the rest of the season.

According to some statistics from Who Scored, the Nottingham Forest striker had a better conversion rate last season than Harry Kane and has propelled himself into the top 10 strikers in the Premier League based on his ruthlessness.

The 26-year-old was the club’s first summer signing after winning promotion to the Premier League.

After scoring 15 goals in the Bundesliga penultimate season, he was plucked from Union Berlin by the Reds for a fee of £17.5 million.

Awoniyi scored five goals in the first half of the campaign but injured his groin during a 1-0 win over Southampton in January.

That injury ruled him out of action for three months and Forest sorely missed his physical presence.

Rangers have engaged the services of a nutritionist for their players.

The nutritionist, according to the club, will oversee the quality of food and drinks intake of the players to aid their performance on and off the pitch.

The management of the club confirmed the appointment of an international acclaimed nutritionist Mrs. Winifred Nwabunike.

Enyimba Begin Screening for Youth Team Sept 27 Enyimba will commence screening exercises for the formation of U-15 and U-19 teams. The exercise is billed to take place at the Ngwa High School, Aba at 2pm daily.

The screening will kick-start on September 27 and end on October 1.

Green Joins Sporting Lagos’ Technical Crew Newly promoted Nigeria Premier Football League club, Sporting Lagos has decided to improve its technical crew with the acquisition of a new assistant coach.

The Lagos-based club secured their spot in the Premier League after they came top during the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Six. The management of the club on Thursday appointed coach Edward Green as the club’s new assistant coach.

Green who is a UEFA C licensed coach worked and was an assistant coach to Coach Deji Ayeni of Akwa United last season. Green is expected to bring his five years work experience with the Promise Keepers to strengthen the newly promoted side.

According to the announcement, the young tactician joins the newly promoted side as an assistant coach.

Green linked up with Sporting Lagos from Akwa United.

He was an integral part of the backroom staff that guided the Promise Keepers to their most recent NPFL triumph in 2021.

Green guided the Akwa United U-15 side to the knockout stages of various editions of the La Liga Championship.

eeking to continue their streak of Emirates supremacy against their arch nemesis, Arsenal play host to Tottenham Hotspur for tomorrow’s blockbuster Premier League North London derby.

Both capital giants sit on 13 points from their opening five games of the new term, but Mikel Arteta’s side also come into the mouthwatering clash on the back of a Champions League thumping of PSV Eindhoven.

For the past several years, Arsenal fans have been forced to witness Tottenham emerge to the Champions League theme on Tuesday and Wednesday nights while they were gunning for glory in the Europa League, but this time around, it was the Gunners’ turn to prove that they warrant a reservation at the continent’s top table.

A PSV side unbeaten in 26 matches in all competitions did their best to flaunt their attacking firepower on a wet North London evening, but Arsenal rained on Peter Bosz’s parade thanks to a flurry of goals from four usual suspects in Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard.

Facing a side as open as PSV may have come as somewhat of a relief for Arteta’s men, who had previously struggled to penetrate a backs-against-the-wall Everton team before a moment of magic from the silky Trossard, who is unsurprisingly proving a more than capable deputy for the injured Gabriel Martinelli.

A four-goal home draw with Fulham remains the only blot on the Gunners’ 2023-24 notebook, and they sit fourth in the rankings owing to their respectable haul of 13 points from 15 on offer in the top flight, albeit below Liverpool and upcoming foes Spurs owing to the goal difference column.

In fact, Arsenal are the only team in the top seven spots yet to hit double figures in goals

this term, as Arteta adopts a slightly more conservative approach to his side’s attacking play, but even the most optimistic of Tottenham fans will not be holding out hope of keeping the Gunners on nine top-flight goals this weekend.

The script was written for Richarlison to play a starring role in Spurs’ most recent showdown with Sheffield United, which came after the hitherto misfiring striker had admitted to seeking psychological help for off-field problems, having struggled to keep his emotions in check in a Brazil shirt during the international break.

Before Richarlison’s introduction off the bench, Tottenham had fallen a goal behind in North London to Gustavo Hamer’s strike and had no answer to Wes Foderingham’s heroics - or indeed his time-wasting tactics but the Blades number one was left red-faced right at the death, as Richarlison headed home the leveller before teeing up Dejan Kulusevski to fire home a sensational late winner in the 10th minute of added time.

Breaking their own record for the latest winning comeback in Premier League history - which was previously held by the Steven Bergwijn-inspired 3-2 success at Leicester City - Spurs remain without defeat in the top flight since Ange Postecoglou took the reins and have only performed worse than a perfect Manchester City so far this term.

Thanks to last weekend’s astonishing fightback, Spurs have also kept up their streak of scoring at least twice in all of their Premier League games under Postecoglou so far, and not since the 1965-66 season have they sat on 13 points after five games, but few will need reminding of Antonio Conte’s acrimonious exit several months after he also led Spurs to their best start to a season last year.

Sunday’s contest will mark the 208th

competitive North London derby since Arsenal and Spurs first locked horns in 1896 - during which the Gunners were a South-East London side - and Arteta’s men have triumphed in four of the last five meetings with their worst enemy, who have gone an unlucky 13 years without winning a top-flight game on Emirates soil.

Former Tottenham Manager, Harry Redknapp, however believes that Tottenham are confident they can defeat Arsenal in the North London Derby this weekend.

Sanusi to be Sidelined for Porto’s Next Games Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi will miss Porto’s games for the next few weeks after sustaining a muscle injury in their UEFA Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Before Porto’s opening game of the Champions League on Tuesday, Sanusi had missed the previous two weeks because of a niggling injury.

However, he returned to action when they took on Shakhtar Donetsk in Germany. The 26-year-old Super Eagles star started for the Dragons against

their Ukrainian opponents.

Unfortunately, he was taken off at halftime, with coach Sergio Conceicao later revealing that he did that as a precautionary measure.

However, Conceicao has now revealed that Sanusi sustained a muscle injury and would be out of action for a few weeks.

“Zaidu(Sanusi) is out and will be out for the next few weeks,” Conceicao said per Sapo.

“It’s a muscle injury.

Unfortunately, we have had some problems, like Marcano and Evanilson.

We have solutions, and the injury doesn’t change the strategy or the plan.

“We have other players who can fill the position, but of course, I always want everyone available.”

Sanusi may not be missed much, as Porto have Wendell in that position. Nonetheless, the Super Eagles star would look to return to full fitness soon.

The Super Eagles defender just returned to action following a short injury layoff, but he looks set for another spell on the sidelines.

Nigeria Beats Egypt to Paralympic Games Tickets Team Nigeria won the majority of the tickets to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games at the ITTF African Para Championships taking place in Giza, Egypt.

Host - Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Mauritius, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Algeria are taking part in the three-day tournament which ends on Saturday September 22.

Revisiting Ganduje’s Livestock Reform Conference

I

t is important that the Tinubu administration takes a position, one way or another, about the movement of cattle within urban areas, village farmlands and state capitals. We lived with this anomaly for the eight years of Buhari, wherein herders had free access to, and the right to use, people’s farmlands, school lawns and public parks as they pleased. They also had unlawful open access to banned AK47 military assault rifles. Anyone else found to have such an instrument of mass destruction was promptly arrested as a danger to the Nigerian state. As I write, a pastor is on trial for holding such an object in public – and this is not even the question or “owning” of not owning it.

Our people say that a young man whose negative reputation for mischief in the village square is traceable to the protection he enjoys from his powerful uncle must remember that uncles don’t last forever. At no time in our national history did herders conduct themselves with so much impunity and reckless disregard for the rights of others as they did under the Buhari government.

As people plying their trade, they have a right to feed their cattle, survive and carry on like everyone else. But not at the expense of other stakeholders – perhaps sometimes even in defiance of the laws of the land.

Buhari is gone. Also gone from political visibility are many who were the most vociferous in their call for Cattle Grazing Routes in a modern state. A modern state, wherein developments, state creation and many other factors have reconfigured everything cannot speak of cattle routes in its original sense. But they weren’t listening at all.

Does anyone even consider the fate of young men, say in the next five to ten years, whose only skill is the ability to follow cattle from one place to another for the purpose of grazing. They are still about town, though. Here in Abuja and elsewhere. Their eclipse may be in sight, but there is no conversation about that by core Northern stakeholders who should be the most worried about this. Banditry, unemployment and unemployability of a substantial percentage of the youth population, are the combined demons ravaging the North today. The human raw material for the social and economic rebirth of the North now exists in the dislocation and mismanaged human capital resources of the zone.

We still see cattle all over town in Abuja and elsewhere. It is as if nothing has changed, or will change. And the question to ask here is this: When will it become part of popular elite consciousness that what is not sustainable cannot contribute positively to national development – particularly the development of skilled human capital that can be part of a 21st Century world?

Six months ago, the former governor of

Ganduje

Kano State, Ganduje, mounted a national discourse on livestock reforms. This move was consistent with his long-standing insistence that the truly lasting solution to herder/farmer conflicts in Nigeria is to be found in livestock reforms. His government put up a very well-conceived, and also well-executed, National Conference on Livestock Reforms. The conference came up with clearly defined solutions and very practical, implementable and realistic steps towards addressing the problems.

There was nothing new about that, coming from Ganduje. He was the first to open up in good faith on the matter. That was nearly six years ago, when he called on The North as a whole to rethink its approach to animal husbandry and its use of its scarce human capital in that regard. For him to take up this same matter as a major national event much later shows his concern and commitment to doing what is right for his people, using a combination of the best global practices and common sense.

Besides the Dollar controversies and other matters surrounding the man, it is a matter of record that Ganduje took some commendable steps in the execution of ranching and related projects while in office. But it did not seem like his fellow Northern Governors paid any attention at all to what he was doing. With their vast lands, not one went to see, and emulate, Ganduje’s bold initiatives. His template for the region’s much-needed economic progress with regards to cattle farming, and the resultant social harmony and sound community relations missing in their domains were not noticed.

The conference under reference here, which held six months ago, built on his earlier

call for sanity in livestock management in Nigeria. Back then, he told Nigerians that his state had enough room and water resources to carter for the needs of all herders in Nigeria. He repeated the same call three years after his initial call. In the later call, he also detailed the availability of ideal natural resources for animal husbandry. He then went further to give good reasons why it is in the long-term economic and political interests of the North to take advantage of his offer.

We all saw video clips of Ganduje’s private and public pronouncement on this matter. The social media was awash with them for weeks. It was also well reported in the regular press. But it would seem that those who should have considered his suggestions, in order to make informed decisions, going forward, did not pay much attention. That is perhaps why the very concerns that governor Ganduje spent so much time, energy and resources screaming about are still here with us.

That conference of six months ago raised issues that were, and still are, germane to any honest conversation about sustainable national development and community relations. It has always been the case here that anecdotes, hearsay, unfounded claims and presumptive attitudes are the basis for even policy decisions. Silo conversations, historical stereotypes, and economic-conflictinduced stigmatizations do not allow for clear thinking when and where it matters.

That conference offered so many positive takeaways. Of special significance in that regard is that the steady, and frightening, inflow of herders from other West African countries into Nigeria is progressively displacing even our traditional herders.

In fact, cattle movement should be put on the plate for ECOWAS, so that it can do something useful, in addition to prancing about awkwardly regarding the event in Niger republic. When we also consider that many of the presumed herders are actually gun smugglers, hardened kidnappers and bandits, it becomes imperative that new thinking is called for around here.

Furthermore, the southwards movement of cattle from the north can only delay the need to do something about creating the right type of environment up north for meaningful animal husbandry. The threat to national security needs no elaboration whatsoever here. That is why Northern governors should probably meet on this matter. Under Buhari, they protested the sacking of herders from a government forest reserves in a South Western state, which the latter occupied in defiance of the law. Chief Olu Falae, a respected elder statesman, lost his farm and also nearly his life to herders and sundry stragglers in the Buhari years.

A point that must also be made here is that Fulani herders are not criminals, per se. But we are unintentionally allowing the impression that herders, and especially Fulani herders, are by definition not law abiding.

This is not true, not fair, and seriously open to question. That is why those who choose to noisily defend some of the objectionable actions of some herders, ostensibly under the impressions that they are protecting Fulani interests, should also note that they are thereby involved in the unintended stigmatization of Fulani herders – especially Nigerian Fulani herders.

We “enjoy” widespread insecurity in the country today, irrespective of our economic or political status, religious affiliation, or ethnic origins. This is not the time for anyone to complain, with ill-informed fervor, in defence of either herders or farmers. It is mostly the north and northerners that are being wiped out by bandits, herders and insurgents. This singular fact is probably the most compelling reason for us to stop fooling ourselves, across all geopolitical divides. It does not make sense that herders should come from all over West Africa, cheerfully wreck whatever they meet in the north, as they match southwards, and still be defended as merely involved in the business of responsible economic activities.

Are Homes, communities, livelihoods not been systematically decimated all over the North today? Are the marauding bands asking any questions about ethnic origins and religious loyalty? Is the entire North, and especially the Village Heads who have had their livestock rustled, doing well today?

See why we need very honest conversation, unbiased media commentary/reportage and sound policies that would aid our collective survival? Taking sides on this matter won’t get us anywhere. That is because we, all of us, are in the line of fire. If we keep saying that herders must be well armed, so that they can defend themselves against armed attacks by cattle rustlers, what do we say about farmers who must protect themselves and their farms from rampaging cattle and armed rearers? See why it is a no-win situation if we all dig in where we are today?

We have national cohesion, genuine nationhood, sustainable leadership values and responsible/patriotic citizenship on the line as I write. So, let us think back to Governor Ganduje’s last National Conference on Livestock Reforms. It brought out much that could be used for concrete action and lasting solutions. Farmers and herders must co-exist, as they have co-existed for decades around here. It is time to pull together and work towards better and more sustainable use of our human capital and natural resources.

We get better meat and milk yields from ranched cattle. So, going back to Gabduje’s National Conference on Livestock Reforms, there is much we ought to do that we are not doing.

Like I said at the beginning of this article: “Our people say that a young man whose negative reputation for mischief in the village square is traceable to the protection he enjoys from his powerful uncle must remember that uncles don’t last forever”.
